I am using Opera mini browser that have inbuilt proxy and blocks ads. You can check here in other browsers and opera mini.

Sorry for posting in this old story again, but I have the same question and I don't think it is answered now.
I typically use AdGuard on my non-rooted device. But if I connect to a public WIFI without (individual) password, I would like to have a 'real' vpn app, that encrypts my data. This VPN of course disables AdGuard, so I have no ad blocking anymore.
My question are:
Is there a 'real' VPN that
a) additionally blocks ads
b) automatically connects to unsecure WIFI (e.g. it doesn't need to connect to my home Wifi)

a) Private Internet Access has such an option (called PIA MACE). I do not know how efficient it is, though.
b) I don't know. PIA does not have such an option. Perhaps this could be solved using Tasker.

my problem is that i have a non rooted phone with vpn always on and im searching for an app to activating ad block on it.
My fix for it would be to use an android wide proxy or a custom dns that overrides vpn dns.
as title said an root app or an app that provides vpn solution wouldnt be what im searching for. I had once an adblock app that routes traffic trough local proxy beside the vpn but cant find it anymore

Some [open]vpn clients allow vpn side connection to Socks5. Some even allow toggle of LAN access from device. I am not claiming a finish product exists but perhaps this gives you some joy.
Perhaps your socks5 instance runs in Amazon AWS free tier. Maybe it runs locally on your android handset. Perhaps you run Privoxy itself on android. [@mod: privoxy is F/OSS older than this forum]. There are a few privoxy projects for android on github. Perhaps you pick their brain. It was that against which proxomitron competed [also F/OSS. Thank God for Scott Lemmon].

There was no obvious way to contact the author who hasn't posted since 2016.
There is an OpenVPN service you can likely find the name of yourself offering *recently* an adblock toggle and AntiTracker toggle with a hardcode mode to protect you from predators like google and Fbook. It shouldn't be long before others emulate this functionality. It sports the vpn side socks5 option.
Or privoxy tunnel to remote [cloud (openvpn)]. See? Fun with permutations. Maybe from phone with ShadowSocks to cloud to vpn to web. "OpenVPN over shadowsocks". At this point look into sites helping Chinese dissidents.
You definitely then return here with your improvements to share.
The remaining question is how much is your time worth? Not much? Then search the web ad naseum for the 'ideal free' solution. Elsewise pony up some pennies for some cloud time as part of a solution.

honestly, free vpn is not the best option, they steal ur data and sell it to other advertising companys, but if anything you can use crytostorm and use the free version of that, and is known not to steal any data from youi and is also safe
I can't root every device. But everyone needs both these 2 things at once on their device:
1. stuff like your keyboard app should never ever talk to the internet.
2. you need a vpn (also with dns and possibly tracker protection)
Android on all the popular devices famously does not let users deny the internet permission per app (it is a general always active permission)
You can also not use 2 "vpn" services at the same time.
If you're not rooted, you can't use iptables (so you can't use stuff like Afwall). -- correct me if I'm wrong and you have a godlike workaround
Most firewalls are just using android's "vpn" function. (e.g. netguard)
But we need the VPN for the actual VPN.
The only VPN app that also has a builtin firewall, is Adguard VPN. But it is too sketchy for my liking as reported here. It logs when and how much you use the vpn (which is equivalent to a fingerprint), their code was not audited, is closed source, and they are neither on fdroid nor on the paystore.
Does anyone know of any alternatives? I tried protonvpn and privateinternetaccess and blokada plus, but none of them have a firewall (you can bypass the vpn per app, but you can't block the app's internet).
I would gladly pay big bucks for a solution; seriously. Thanks.
PS: Don't suggest using a pihole or a router based VPN because I don't have that when I'm not home so that's == 0.

m8, netguard is a "vpn" firewall. Hence you can't use netguard and also e.g. protonVPN at the same time. That is why I asked if anyone knows of an actual VPN app that happens to also have a builtin firewall. Adguard VPN is one example.

A VPN based solution is the only one that can work without root. There is no other non-root way to control the network other than to route it through a VPN.
In OpenVPN for Android you can, while setting up a profile, select which apps should be excluded from the VPN, and disallow apps to bypass the VPN at the same time. That should do the trick.

Like I said, Adguard has in its VPN, a firewall and a vpn and a privacy shield all in one. It's fine that the firewall uses the vpn solution, as long as it is merged within an actual VPN app. This is what I was asking: Are there any vpn apps that also have firewall?

You have not paid attention to what I am asking. I asked if anyone knows of any app that has both vpn and firewall.
I obviously don't want to make my system LESS SECURE by allowing apps to NOT USE VPN. Plus, every vpn app under the sun has a split tunnel feature that allows apps to bypass the vpn.

So, you are looking for a VPN service that has firewall capabilities? I don't think I've seen one in the wild. Some security software providers might have this feature, but I can't verify that.
And alternative solution might be to use a local proxy server with rules to block apps from the internet which would allow you to use any VPN service you would like.

Sorry I 100% thought if you tell an app to bypass the vpn, it bypasses the vpn, regardless of the generic setting of forcing apps to use vpn. I will experiment with this. And sorry for my harshness, my luck on forums lately was usually ppl answering the opposite of what I asked.
I will try actually to use my vpn app, set it to exclude an app from vpn, and then tell Android itself in the VPN settings to "block connections without VPN". Assuming Android's vpn switch doesn't leak (e.g. at startup or smth), that might do the trick.
Unfortunately openVPN doesn't work super well nowadays because most vpn providers chose to develop their own app / wrapper and no longer provide good openVPN guides (especially since their servers / configs change often, a static openvpn config doesn't cut it anymore). Even in linux I just use "the app" instead of openvpn configs.
Anyway, thanks I'll test soon
This isn't a practical / good solution at all for most people, because:
- you will need some apps to use the internet without a vpn (because they don't work with vpn etc)
- if you ever need to turn off your vpn globally and access the internet, say your subscription died or you just can't connect, then your "firewall" is nullified.
It's an all or nothing solution.

Unfortunately that's not a solution. There are many apps that need to bypass VPN while still being able to connect to Internet, like banking apps.
While I can always just turn off the VPN before using such apps, that would also turn off the firewall feature, right? Going by that logic, I can always just turn off the Internet before using any app I want to disallow from accessing to Internet.
It kills multitasking, not that Android has much multitasking capability to begin with...sadly.

If you want certain apps to use the Internet while you are connected through a VPN, you should sandbox them inside a Work Profile. Depending on your ROM, you might need an app like Island or Shelter to create that separated environment. This way you can use all your normal apps in the main profile with the VPN running, and those apps that need it can connect directly from the work environment. Mind that the apps in the different profiles cannot see each other, which can be a privacy bonus but also makes collaboration between them slightly more complex.

Had no idea work profile has its own VPN slot. Thx for the suggestion. The setup is working pretty smoothoy. Only concern: work profile apps can't automatically read OTP. So far, all the apps I use allow manually entering OTP. Hopefully it would be an issue. Also, I can't disable notifications of work profile apps by categories. It is either all or none.

previously, I used dns.adguard.com for the Private DNS setting. however, that was not blocking all of the ads from within some apps. it worked pretty well until then. Now, I downloaded blokada 5, and that successfully blocks almost all ads. the lone problem is that when connecting to a website, it often slows it down.
curious to see if anyone has a similar experience or recommend an alternative to dns.adguard.com.

I personally use both NordVPN as well as AdAway with root; AdAway has a VPN function of its own, and you can use your own host lists, but the VPN solution is more resource intensive than the root solution.

i do have windscribe, but rarely use it. i have not rooted this device yet, as my understanding rooting will disable Google Wallet/GPay - and I use those more often than I would need to hide ads.
+1 to AdAway, plus if your preferred browser supports it, install an adblocker in it as well - I use uBlock for Firefox.
There's also MinMinGuard which has recently gotten an update to make it work on current systems, but that requires Lsposed if you don't already use it, as well as individually enabling it for every new app you install. Honestly, though, with AdAway plus a browser adblocker, I almost never see any ads in any app, so I don't find MinMinGuard necessary anymore.

No root will not disable Google Wallet/GPay, you just have to install Safety net fix module and all works great, for banking apps just hide root into settings. I use all my banking apps, card tokens and gpay/wallet everyday. Rooking root + adaway.

i tried installing the 1.1.1.1 app from cloudflare, and it did NOT block the ads on my scrabble app. thx for the suggestion though.
Have you tried using a browser like Brave which would help with your browsing experience. I use a combination of Blockada for system wide blocking, pihole for in-home network based blocking and browsers like Brave/DDG for blocking and so on. I have a tasker based activity for turning on/off blockada when in home/out of home. It's my non-root solution.

Hey, just stumbled across your post and thought that if you use piehole at home, you should be able to just use a VPN to you piehole when on the road so you don't have to rely on third party apps. Don't know about performance though, but you might give it a try.

Been taking NextDNS for a test ride. Easy set up with a lot of features, up to 300,000 queries per month for free. What's not to like?

As the title says, I'm switching from Xiaomi mi 11 and there was a simple way to restrict any app from connecting to internet, the only way I have found so far in my s23u is netguard app, but it uses local VPN which is not the best solution as I am using it already with adaway as an adblocker

You could try using nextdns and using the private dns address but you'd have to block the websites of what app you want blocked from connecting to the internet and all that works without using your vpn
