[GUIDE] Add ringtones, notifications, alarms on AXON 7 root / non-root - ZTE Axon 7 Guides, News, & Discussion

As the A7 is a bit stubborn on putting custom ringtones to be notified in the 'ringtone' department of your phone instead of showing them under the 'global' tab MUSIC, i did some testing to put custom ringtones, notifications and alarms on my A7 properly (root necessary).
non-root :
Perhaps you noticed already putting a ringtone in your phones storage or sd-card makes it only visible in the general 'music' tab(as far as i know). To surch your ringtone out of your 1000 music files had to make you convert the name of your ringtone adding a # symbol or something else to find it between the mass...
In fact when you put f.e. a ringtone in Ringtones folder of your internal storage it makes the ringtone visible in BLUE under your 'music' tab.
When you add a ringtone under a folder like ringtones you created on your SD card it makes the ringtone visible in BLACK under your 'music' tab.
rooted :
For me this was not an option to 'search' my ringstones and other stuff under a general music tab. Instead i wanted them to be visible on the right place as it should be. As you know you have to be rooted to put ringtones (...) in system/media/audio/ringtones...BUT as i never had to put ringtones in SYSTEM before this time there was a little problem : in SYSTEM they did play in my explorer but they didn't play when i had to select them under the 'ringtone' tab when f.e. selecting a specific ringtone for your phone. They just gave a 'faulty' tone....
It took me a while before i saw that all the A7 files under ringtones (e.o) are rw-r-r- and mine were rw-rw-:cyclops:
On my other phones this never gave me a problem because i could just put any ringtones in a folder of my sd-card. Here it's different and not-user-friendly.
So, solution is very obvious, just use Root Explorer and change permissions of your ringtones to rw-r-r
You can select them all togheter and change them. (In Solid explorer f.e. you can only change one at a time. Therefore i recommend Root Explorer.)
After that they are visible and playable under 'ringtones' tab (...)
I just wanted to share this for rooted (and non-rooted) users when they encounter some problems to import ringtones (...) in system

I have another solution (non-root).
1. record something in the built-in recorder app
2. convert your ringtone in the same audio format (wav) using something like fre:ac (free audio converter)
3. replace the recorded file in internal storage/records with your ringtone
4. use the recorder app to rename the file, you can test your replaced file here
5. select your ringtone in settings in the recording tab

No need for the above.
Just drop the mp3 into the internal storage/records folder. It'll show up under the recordings tab in the selector.

Of course you can mate :silly:
But, some people, like me, don't want them.to show up in records folder. Ringtones are supposed to be in the right folder, like with other phones, and not under record folder. But if you're happy with this that's OK :good:

I can honestly count on one finger how many times I've recorded something on a phone within the last year. So records folder is good enough for now for custom media sounds. Messing with the /system will cause issues when doing a firmware update. In fact, if you ever need to reflash the /system, anything you've put in it will be gone. This way /system stays intact.
Maybe they'll get this sorted in the next update.

Glad you mentioned it : maybe they'll get this...
I hope so but I don't think so. It's just the way ZTE thinks....
Of course you can as for now put your rings and other stuff in records but that's not the way it should be. Records are records, ringtones are...
As for messing up a phone when you put some rings etc in your system is a little bit exaggerated no That's just the way I like it. To exploit my phone.
And when I should loose my ringtones when reflashing a rom of some kind, I can put those back in a minute. Just import my favorites from Google Drive and basta. 1minute of work.
But... as you mentioned it : hope they will fix this...

Can someone please send me the stock sounds?

Ringtones questions

2 Questions.
1. How can i install ringtones and use the default app to show them all? (I usually use astro to set a mp3 to a ringtone, but I found a rom with a bunch I liked that were not in the Rom I am using currently) I like using the default selector.
2. How can I pull the ringtones out of another rom?
ty
I removed default ringtones by using ES file manager in the market (make sure to go to settings and allow root permission a well as read/write) once you have the app and open it and back out of the sd card root into OS , select system folder then media, in there is notifications and ringtones and whatnot. Now that you know where to put the ringtones just copy and paste them there.
Now I'm a noob so there may be an easier better way but worked for me ha ha.
Oh and ringdroid app from the market works well in trimming them. I usually make tones then put them in as system defaults.
Sorry can't help with question two

Zedge ringtones app from the market. It is free. The best part is you can change your ringtones with the default HTC ringtone chooser. Also if you happen to change your ROMs it is saved to the SD card and after you install a rom after a full wipe, you can still pick the downloaded ringtones from the HTC ringtone chooser. Yes Ill say it again, even after a full wipe and flashing a new rom on your phone
Ringdroid will do the same actually, I don't know why I said all that lol, I was caught up on how I delete the lame default ones

ok, so if they are in system/media I can pull them from the rom and drop em on SD.
thanks guys
there is no need for an app to install ringtones and notification sounds to your phone.
simply create a folder in the root of your sdcard called media. In the media folder create another folder called audio. Then in that folder make 2 folders, one called notifications and another called ringtones. once those are created put a ringtone or notification sound in the corresponding folder and once you eject it the ringtone/notification sound will be available in the ringtone/notification list.
your folder tree should be as follows
sdcard
|---------media
|-----------|-------audio
|---------------------|-------notifications
|---------------------|------------|-------notification.mp3
|---------------------|-------ringtones
|---------------------|------------|-------ringtone.mp3
Are there any requirements for ringtones I might make? Mp3 vs OGG, length, etc?
I have found that after placing an mp3 in my system\media\audio I have too reboot before the phone will recognize it.

I put them on my SD card under a folder called "ringtones".
I been playing around with the ringtone/notification/alarms folders (especially since rooting)
They can be placed anywhere on the SD card (I still use the >Media\*** tree for orginization purposes). I have yet to find a time/size limit, except for what I prefer they sound like.
I prefer the MP3 format for rintones/notifications/alarms, because rather than the file name, they will show the tagged Title as the tone name. So you can call the tone "ringer1.mp3" but in the (I use Windows) properties, you can setr the title to "The Wife's Custom Ringtone", and android will display it as "The Wife's Custom Ringtone" (just examples off the top of my head. I'm not that lame)
I just mount ther phone to the computer, drag and drop the tones to the proper folder, unmount the phone, go to the selector, and voila there they are.

[Q] How to get Sounds and Ringtones off of SD card?

I recently went from a BB to a droid and I want the ringtones and text sounds that are on my SD card to be put on my droid. But I cant find them when I try to set a ringtone.
Any ideas?
Also, I want to find a way to take them off (or copy them) to the phone so I can send them as MMS to friends too.
Im not sure how to do either of these so any and all help would be great!
thanks!
If you store any MP3 files that you want as ringtones in a folder called /ringtones and any notifications in a folder called /notifications anywhere on your SD card, they will show up in the list of notifications or ringtones. So, you could have folders called ringtones and notifications on the SD card, or you could organize them into /media/ringtones and /media/notifications - any way that you get separate folders called notifications and/or ringtones will work.

I have made a My Documents folder and seperated them into Ringtones and Alerts but when I go to select them, I dont have the option to find them, I can only use Zedge, Music, or Default.
I want to be able to go into that file and select them myself. And also send them to someone else (non smart phone user)

Linux (what Android is based on) is case sensitive and you would have to create two separate folders. One called ringtones and one called notifications. As he said, other than that, you're free to organize them however you wish, but those folder names themselves have to be like that.
If I'm wrong about this, somebody shoot me.

Again, this is what I have always done, and it has worked with every ROM.
To the OP, if you have a folder on your SD card called My Documents, create two folders inside that folder - Ringtones and Notifications - and move the ones that you want for each into those folders, or copy into both if you want them for both. Use those exact names, including the plural. As for case sensitivity, I don't think it matters, as I just looked at my SD card and my two folders are called Ringtones and notifications - so it seems to be case-insensitive.

Thanks for letting me know about the case insensitivity in this case, pun intended. To quote someone else recently addressed to me "I learn something new every day."

Sounds on i9100

Hello fellow SGS2 user,
Normally, after installing another custom ROM, I adjust the ringtone, alarm sound and also whatsapp and sms notifications. I tend to use the same sounds all the time, and do not require all other beautiful sounds that my device contains.
Today I decided to see if I could delete the sounds that I never use.
I installed Android Commander on my PC and accessed the root of my phone.
I went to the root:system\media\audio folder and deleted all sounds that I don't need.
Afterwards I rebooted the phone and went to Settings -> Sound and tried to see what sounds would pop up when I clicked on "Phone ringtone".
Guess what: the names of all ringtones were still there! And they all seemed to still function.
With a file manager I went to the folder mentioned above, but only the sounds that I left behind were there, and the previously deleted ones were still deleted.
My question: is there another location on my phone where sounds are stored? And is there any way to make the sound list (when wanting to chose another ringtone, or alarm sound, or whatsapp sound) as short as I want it to be?
Thanks in advance!

why do you want to delete those ringtones in the first place? Is it to free up more space?
Swyped from my Galaxy SII
No not really, though it helps. I just wanted to see if it is possible.
Sounds can be stored on internal sdcard. And no, you can't make sound lists.

[Q] Custom Ringtones?

So, according to Nokia's support page:
On the start screen, swipe left, tap Settings > ringtones+sounds, select the type of ringtone or alert you want to change, and select the sound. If you have an mp3 file of a song on your PC, you can make it your ringtone. Connect your phone to your PC, and use the file manager of your PC to move the song you want to use as ringtone to the ringtone folder in your phone. To set the song as your ringtone, in the ringtones+sounds view, tap Ringtone, and under Custom, tap the song. You can use a song as your ringtone if it's not protected with digital rights management (DRM), and it’s smaller than 30 MB. Your PC must have Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8.

I've looked but can't seem to find the "custom" option. I'm new to WP so any help is greatly appreciated.
You can drag any MP3 to the "ringtones" folder (on your computer) and it will appear at the top of the list and you can set it as the ringtone.

The genre MUST be set as RINGTONE. Never had to do that on iPhones or Androids, but meh. As long as I know what I must do in advance.
Ah interesting! I guess the ones I picked must have been marked that already (I copied them from my S3 (zedge downloads)).
Ahhh thanks for this, was trying to figure out why it wouldn't work.
Ended up converting to 5 different formats before I ran across this.
Seems like this works for ringtones but not for txt / email alerts, any idea if those can be changed ?
the genre must be ringtone??? i don't think i would ever have known this if not for this thread!!! hahaha... thx a lot!!!

Awesome! I'm glad I was able to help my fellow XDA-ers. Now if we can just figure out the custom text tones...

I got my phone yesterday and I transferred the files I had on my Android to the Ringtones folder on this phone. I had read this post before i got the phone and i only changed one of the file to a Ringtone genre and another to Ringtones, i left the other as they were. The are all showing up as ringtones that i can select for phone calls. I don't think it's the genre that makes a difference. it might be the length of the ringtone. all my ringtones i edited to be under 25 seconds or so.
IIRC they only have to be under 30mb in size, length should be irrelevant as far as I understood it?

That's strange. Oh well, glad it worked for you. I did the same thing as you but they wouldn't work. Changing the genre was recommended by Nokia and that worked for me.

I'm having the same problem on my phone. How do you change the genre?
I thought the genre thing was only in WP7. One could use Zune or (I believe) Windows Media Player to change the genre.
We should be free of this in WP8.
One thing I noticed is that the tones don't start showing up in the list of available ringtones on the phone until you disconnect the phone from the PC -- and not immediately after first being dragged into the ringtones folder. I suspect the phone does some housekeeping when unplugged from the PC.
None of that worked for me. Does it matter was Windows OS you're using? I have XP on my computer.
---------- Post added at 04:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:40 PM ----------
SOLVED.
I switched to my Windows 7 computer. When I dragged the files into the ringtone folder, they were MP4 files and it had to convert them to WMA or MP3 first. After it converted them, it worked great. I decided to download the Windows Phone App on that computer, but it failed the installation for some reason. Now, I have to figure out what's going on with it now.
Has anyone had any luck changing or adding more "alert tones" for mms, text, email, etc. I would actually buy an app or pay for a way to do this. Any leads?

ROM Mod Question LOOK!! New Helpful Info!!

I have extracted some of the notification and ringtones that I like from other JB builds to use in CNA 3.6.6 and placed them in system/media/audio/notifications or system/media/audio/ringtones as appropriate. I have also set permissions to rw-r--r-- on the files I added.
My question is what else do I need to do so they show up on the list where I actually choose what tone I want to use. The only ones that are visible on the list are the ones that came standard with CNA 3.6.6.
All files are in ogg format and after doing the above steps they do not stick after a reboot. What has happened is after reboot they are not listed or, if they are, they will dissappear. I discovered this after setting them and then missing calls after a while. When this happened I checked in the sound settings and the tone listed was either "unkown" or a number was there instead of the tone I selected. This happens with apps that are part of the ROM and with third party apps. This issue does not happen if I stick with the stock choices. I also did not experience this with Froyo or GB builds, only with ICS and JB.
Thanks
Make a 'Notifications' and 'Ringtones' folder on the root of your SD card. Place the files there, reboot.
That is where I moved them from for the same reason. I was thinking having them in /system/media/audio/notifications or /ringtones would fix it. I'll give it a shot and see.

Thought id just throw it out there as a last resort. Third party apps sometimes will do the trick. Been using this one for some time now. Give it a go if need be and see if it helps.

I did this ^^^ and put the tones back on the SD card as Acvice suggested and it is working fine again. Thanks for the suggestions!!
For those who are curious, I found a better fix for this.
I have bounced around a little recently (CM7, AOKP, Liquid Smooth) and I came back to CNA 3.6.6. Well, I had to copy and paste some ringtones and notification tones into the ROM again so I could have the ones I really like.
So, I did the following:
Copy and paste the ones I wanted into /system/media/audio/notifications or system/media//audio/ringtones as needed.
Change permissions to rw-r--r--
Now, at this point they did not show up in the list when I went to choose them until after reboot. BUT, would disappear and reappear at random. When they disappeared my phone would not ring audibly because it "lost" the associated ringtone or notification tone.
So, I place them in the root of the sd card and I could choose them from there. But doing this had problems, too. If you connect to a pc the sd card would not be accessible by the phone. So what happens? The phone doesn't ring audibly because it "lost" the association to the ringtone on the sd card and I would have to go into settings and choose it again. It was getting to be a headache.
This time, I made a discovery. Using root explorer, I changed ownership on the newly transplanted ringtones. The new setting is as follows:
Owner: 0-root
Group: 0-root.
The old setting were system 1015 and sd card. Under the new ownership everything works perfect so far. I can connect to pc via usb, reboot, or whatever and the assigned sound setting stays put.
Hope this helps anyone who has had the sane issue!
