I am on MPL24.246.20 (i know its old, but I cannot find a later one for MM for X1650-03).
Anyway, after I unlocked the bootloader, I booted TWRP to back everything up - that worked great.
My next step will be to flash TWRP and then I want to root it.
It seems like all these threads have instructions to root N, but I prefer to stay on MM for now .
Which Root should I flash and what about the kernel? - can I just flash root or does the kernel need to be updated also?
Any help are highly appreciated, thanks.
Update:
I got it to work. I flashed TWRP from Fastboot and then installed SU. ON my third attempt I was successful and discovered that Chainfire's SuperSU from the play-store is not working (it did install but immediately told me to update the code - that process failed). I rebooted, re-installed SU from TWRP and then went back into playstore and download phh's superuser. That seems to work just fine.
SU requests are being satisfied and I'm a happy camper with MM on MotoZ.
Thanks.

hi, i recived the 6.0 update OTA today
my phone was on 5.0.2, bootloader unlocked, supersu rooted
using supersu option i removed the root, this to be able to install OTA (leaving supersu result in "update error")
updated to 6.0 succesfully
downloaded lastest stable supersu v2.65
downloaded twrp-surnia-3.0.2-r1
booted twrp without flashing (i don't want to install twrp) do this way in 5.0 and 5.0.2 adn worked
flashed supersu
phone stay at "warning screen"
to restore the phone i downoaded the 6.0 zip and flasched back the "sparsechunk.x" files
how to get the root back again in 6.0??
thanks.
exactly the same here, even with supesu 2.71 beta
You have to install the superSU v2.62-3 (it installs systemless mode) OR in the terminal of the TWRP enter "echo SYSTEMLESS=true>>/data/.supersu" (without the quotes) and then flash the version you want, in order to force the systemless install. I still recommend just use v2.62-3.
Supersu zip v2.62-3 and try: http://download.chainfire.eu/751/Sup...1211162651.zip
thinks @basili
I finally managed
That worked for me too
how
thanks it worked fo rme too
simply install TWRP 3.0.2r1 then supersu.2.62.3
I have a question. I installed the SuperSU 2.62.3 like its recommended in post #3, but Google Play shows that there is an update. Can I update it safely now?
i have my bootloader unlocked and everything ive followed every detail and it said flashed recovery was successful but how do i access twrp im only getting stock recovery plz any advice will be greatly appreciated thx in advance for your help
I recently upgraded to Nougat 7.1.1 from Marshmallow via Flashfire. I flashed the factory image because it did not automatically recognize the downloaded OTA, and I was concerned that I'd have to go through several incremental OTA upgrades to get where I wanted. I told it to leave my recovery alone (was using TWRP 2.8.6.0 with no problems) and Flashfire went OK. My tablet updated fine, SuperSU 2.82 SR4 (systemless) root was installed, Root Checker says device is rooted and device is reporting in regular recovery that bootloader as unlocked. When I boot into custom recovery, TWRP is still asking for a password (easily bypassed by hitting Cancel), shows none of the file partitions I want, and on reboot system says my "device does not appear to be rooted, install SuperSU now?". I press "Do Not Install" and the tablet boots OK and Root Checker STILL reports the device as being rooted! SuperSU, Titanium, stickmount, etc. all work fine as well.
Are there some settings in TWRP that I need to change? Do I need to upgrade TWRP to 3.1.1.0 flounder? Is it because "Enable OEM unlocking" in Developer Options is off? I looked like crazy last night and can't find a solution . PLEASE HELP!
You will need the latest TWRP to be able to decrypted your device.
Ignore the message from the old version of TWRP about root, it is not detecting the latest root method(systemless).
As for "Enable OEM unlocking" I would advise to enable it, in case of future problems. Is your bootloader unlocked?
Also this months factory image is probably the last version for the device (we might get one more to patch KRACK).
Have you consider backing up apps and switching to a custom rom?

Why is the latest TWRP (3.1.1.0) have "flounder" in it? I thought the Nexus 9 was "volantis". Can I install this latest TWRP image on my tablet without bricking it? Oh, and I can't flash a custom ROM until I get this TWRP crap figured out. Sideloading is not my bag .

flounder is just another code name for the device.
You can flash the latest TWRP with fastboot or Install an image from your old TWRP.
Changing TWRP version should not cause a bootloop/bricking.

Hey I just picked up this phone and decided I would like to maximize it to its fullest potential, and root it as I have done with previous phones. This ones giving me a hard time, and I just can't seem to find the proper info for it.
I have unlocked the bootloader, flashed TWRP 3.1.1 and want to gain root access. I have followed several guides, used every possible one-click unsuccessfully, and tried installing SuperSU with TWRP. After I reboot, SuperSU is installed. I'll open it up and it tells me the binaries are occupied. I've tried downgrading and updating the binaries but I get errors. (I believe this is because it must be rooted first - of course.)
So I'm stuck unable to get any further. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it. Is this phone with this configuration unrootable? There must be a way if I have recovery right?
Asus Zenfone 4 Z01KD/ZE554KL
Android Nougat 7.1.1 - 14.1060.1708.63 (NOT 1708.70)
TWRP 3.1.1 installed
One thing I have not tried is using Magisk. When I try it, it stops because I already patched with SuperSU (even though it failed). I never backed up before I did it with SuperSU I really thought it would work.
I read of people doing it with Magisk after updating to Oreo. I want to give that a try but I can't OTA or flash from TWRP. All attempts result in error 7.
I can't find a stock recovery to flash to do the update either. Is there a way to undo this, OTA and repatch with Magisk? Even if I don't bother updating, I would like to find a stock image to flash so I can try patching with Magisk.
Stock rom recovery.img anywhere? Am I alone?
i dont own this device but i read this and it might apply to you. also did you flash the supersu uninstaller and them try magisk?

hey i have the zenfone 4 ze554kl i updated it to android 9 unlocked the bootloader and got Twrp running but not correctly and i can't root the phone .....
Well,a lot of people have debranded/to manually install Oreo VTR-L29C432 B360 with the Method proposed...
now,we need a nice/clean tuto for INSTALL TWRP and ROOT with magisk or phh superuser.
Question is... After installing
TWRP: will we get updates/security updates from huawei AFTER flashing twrp ? ... If yes, will they install normally and work like nothing happened
ROOT: about same things as TWRP .... and after installing updates,we loose everything (twrp/root)
cuz bootloader is unlocked.
When i was on Nova Plus, TWRP/ROOTED with phh superuser i couldnt receive any updates at all...I received a n update once (from ROGERS ),dloaded it,let it do its thing,install/reboot (it was an official update OTA) and it always ended in a fail install...even if ive flashed original recovery so.
so many things after twrp/root is installed and receive/install official OTA

To answer you questions, You can receive updates from Huawei even if you are on twrp it just won't install because you need stock recovery for it to complete the installation , that's the reason why when you debrand your phone it installs the stock recovery as part of the process. Second it is possible to root being on Oreo with magisk @Blackball has a tutorial covering that. I'm on Oreo and also I have root and twrp install. Also there are several ways of installing updates one of them is to go back to stock recovery and waot for oficial updates you can also use proxy method with firmware finder as long as the update is approved for your IMEI, anyways there are several tutoriales covering all of this and many other thing just have to look a bit more through the rabbit hole.

Good afternoon. I ran into a problem that I can not install magic on the device. This requires installing TWRP, which has not been officially released. There is an article on this forum that you can install TWRP, but if I do this, the phone goes into an endless TWRP download - https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/recovery-bkl-emui-8-x-unofficial -twrp-3-2-1-0-working-recovery-from-view-10.3798751/
Version - 3.2.1-0 does not work. I tried iterating through the versions and found 1 which opens TWRP but it doesn't work properly - https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/root-emui-9-0.3883991/. It doesn't clean up, it doesn't install. Some errors in the logs.
I also tried through this instruction - https://4pda.to/forum/index.php?showtopic=904618&st=6220#entry89786439
Next, I tried to find the firmware for this phone, which is extremely difficult. Android version - 9.1.0.xxx
I need this in order to pull out the boot file from there and patch it through the magic. I found the firmware from Colombia. I'm trying to install via HuUpdater. He tries to install 3.2.1-0 TWRP, which does not work, and install the firmware through it, which also does not work. I installed another TRWP where it runs but nothing works. Through it does not want to be installed. My bootloader is unlocked.
I no longer know how to get root rights.
Several times I was able to get root rights, but I could not do a factory reset and the magic did not work properly. It's critical for me. I need to be able to do a factory reset.
Help me please.
Hi! You tried to get the boot.img from your rom, and patched it with magisk, and flashed it to the phone?

I can't do this because this requires a TRWP which is not in working order.
