Seriously sluggish performance - Xperia Z5 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My GFs been using her Z5C for over a year now, however the first phone she got had some mainboard malfunction causing it to randomly crash and reboot. The second Z5C has been working somewhat good, however it becomes very sluggish and unresponsive after some use. I know this device only has 2GB of ram and half of that is eaten away by the system. I'm just wondering if you to experience really poor performance from time to time? Jumping from Nova launcher to phone, sms app or play store can take like 5-10 seconds with a white screen while loading/RAM swapping is a pain. I already factory restored it a couple of times, and was running the Marshmallow .11 release until now, switched to CM13 which is performing just a bit better, but comparing to an old Galaxy S2 running CM13 it feels almost the same which is weird considering the S2 only has 768MB RAM.
Just interesting to hear your experiences, maybe this phone also has a faulty mainboard like the one before I was thinking. Also it gets really hot, like always, with Android system being the main hog on battery usage and this on Sonys firmware and factory restored.
I get that the small form factory comes at a price, but seriously? ?

Try this i know is for nexus 6p ive even using it on nougat stock also suggest you to use it on stock just backup ur original thermal.conf after this u will see the true potential of the z

I would not mess with the thermal configuration without knowing what exactly am I doing.
You are suggesting using a configuration file from nexus to apply onto the z5c. Surely, this is not a great idea, even if it had some positive results... I'd rather see a therm.config file made specifically for the z5c.

Ooh well just trying to help out ive been using this mods from him since lg g3... As much as i know thermal.conf are universal cross SoC since n6p has same SoC as the z5 compact is been using it on my z5 compact since almost 7 month and i havent have any issues.. even now on nougat is even better i did couple benchmark and the differences are huge in quadrant benchmark register around 10000 wgit the moded file around 23000

After you apply u will see why z5 compact still high priced u will unleash the dragon on it just remeber to back up the original file change the right permission and read the thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/development/cttmod-mm-t3386953

I compared the thermal-engine.conf of the one from the Nexus series with our thermal-engine.conf and found out that they have very different hotplugging methods. There are also some thermal configs that are missing. If you check the one from the Nexus, you'll see that when it reaches a certain threshold, the phone will shut down. Similar to ours, but the Z5 plugs out cores faster than the Nexus one.
Anyways, I wouldn't try it. It might have no negative effect on your phone, but it's not really worth the risk. Though I have taken the time to ask various devs if this is possible. I'm curious as to whether it is indeed effective or not.

IMO, Nougat's stock thermal is actually better. I've read that Stock Nougat's thermal ignores the thermal-engine.conf to some extent. It seems that Sony has rewrote the thermal-engine.conf for android N.

Okey, so in other words it's pretty common that this phone feels sluggish not just on my GFs Z5C but also yours?
Then perhaps I should look for some other phone in same size group but with Qualcomm 600 series SoC instead and at least 3GB RAM which should give a better experience.

For me it's damn quick and much faster than my s4mini with 1,5 gb ram andCm13 before. However i'm using the mod i posted since short after buying because it got too hot sometimes.
In your case i would try the nougat firmware, from what i read it's faster than MM with better Battery Life and like iArvee mentioned less heat.
If you look for another phone, X compact would be the stats you mentioned. However some say Z5C is still better. I cannot compare, but there is an own Thread in the general section. Phones in this size group with good specs are pretty rare lately.

Honestly, no. The phone is not sluggish at all whatsoever. Though if you do wish to go for a new phone, then as @Gewiz mentioned, the X Compact is your best bet. That is, if you wish to stick with Sony. On paper, the Z5C is faster than the X Compact, but the 600 series does not heat up as fast as the 810. Keep in mind though, the X Compact is not Water resistant. I was going for the X Compact, but went for the Z5C instead because of the IP68.

I suspect it's due to the limited 2GB RAM, it's not enough for what your girlfriend is using her phone for.
Similar situation with my wife, we both have a Z5C bought around the same time, mine's very fast and responsive, yet my wife's takes forever to do anything. There's a big difference in how we use our phones, mine's relatively clean, stock, rooted and I use Greenify to help.
Her phone on the other hand has all these custom girly themes, Facebook app (notorious memory hog, I don't use it), a dozen or so photo editing apps that just refuse to hibernate (according to Greenify I later installed on her non-rooted phone in an effort to help improve things) and also eats up memory like there's no tomorrow... it's like a jungle of apps and stuff all over the place. She has horrific battery life as well.
I actually offered to switch phones with her a few weeks ago, since I feel like my phone was optimized and in great condition. However, once all of her apps and customization went into effect, it instantly became noticeably slower. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
At least she now has Greenify to auto hibernate those pesky apps that she absolutely refuses to delete.
Meanwhile, her original phone that I'm now using got a make over with my clean, lean and mean treatment and is running like a champ.

I'm still running Xpower 5. I tried moonwalkers rom and it seemed faster but it would also cause a boot loop after a few days. I find the phone CAN be very sluggish as well. I think it has to do with the memory as well. Sometimes I start an app (ie. Google voice or ES file manager) and it pops up instantly. Sometimes it pops up but the screen is blank and it literally sits for maybe 5 seconds before anything happens. The camera can be worse. Sometimes even opening the app drawer gives a lag. Android Auto is just always slow. I've found that if I use an app killer and clear out some memory the phone becomes more responsive. Yes, the OS should automatically do this, but it doesnt seem to do a very good job. If I'm starting an app thats not in memory, it should make no difference whether the memory is empty or the OS needs to kill something to make room. Maybe the process of clearing out space in memory has some lag.
I would switch phones in a heartbeat but I like the smaller form factor and nearly all other phones in the world are bigger.
Regarding facebook, I did this with my older phone because of how bad FB is, there is a "facebook lite" app you can get which is designed for lesser phones. It runs much better but it is more limited.
I'm waiting for a usable nougat rom to try. hopefully that will help
