Ok, so iv recently purchased a xiaomi redmi note 4 and im pretty happy with it so far, however it wont allow me to use my Lloyds Bank internet banking app, keeps telling me that im rooted, which i can only assume i am, presumably when i bought the phone from geekbest, they had to root the device before they could sideload the Google play etc, my question is, is there a decent way of either hiding the fact im rooted from this app? Iv tried a couple of apps from the play store but they dont appear to work, still get the same message from the banking app. Failing that, how easy would it be to 'unroot' the device and would this have any repercussions on the current functionality of my new phone?
Cheers

See my post here https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70820837&postcount=38 which should enable you to reinstall the firmware which won't be rooted.
Im currently running MIUI 8.0.5.0.0 - stable
Am i still ok to continue with this update without it effecting my current setup of my phone? i.e. google play etc

There is an excellent backup system within MIUI so I'd recommend using that before any install.
If you go through those instructions, nothing much should change. The Play Store is included within the firmware so that's no issue. I'm not sure what the latest stable version is but I'm sure that link goes through to the most up to date version?

yeah iv stumbled at the first hurdle, as i cant get my phone to connect to my PC via cable, iv enabled 'developer options' and enabled 'USB debugging' and have allowed FTP via USB connection and also installed the Mi PC Suite, all drivers appear to install but it wont show up properly in file manager to allow me to copy over the ROM to the root of the phone, the PC Suite says my phone needs an update before it will connect, however its on the very latest updates, there are no more available for it!? Is it because the PC suite isnt suitable for Marshmallow based ROMs?

I'm not sure what instructions you're following but that doesn't sound familiar at all. There is no involvement with a PC or Mi Suite required.
Most of the instructions are here in this image: https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4024465&d=1485893799
Ignore the bit about downloading to the PC, download it directly using your phone.

I was attempting to download the ROM on my PC and then FTP it to the root of the phone, however i suppose i can download it straight onto my phone (when im at home connected to WIFI) otherwise all of my roaming data allowance will be eaten up in one foul swoop!
Iv just downloaded the ROM zip file onto the root of my phone, gone into "choose update package" and selected the ROM iv just downloaded, it thinks about it for a moment then states "Cant verify update" - 'Couldnt verify update package'

From what I remember, it doesn't go into the root folder, it goes in 'downloaded_rom' or something along those lines.
You may need to install the developer ROM then go back to stable for it to work correctly but I'm pretty sure as long as you get the firmware in the correct folder it should work.

Well the instructions on the link state:
"Step 1: Put the downloaded ROM into internal storage (not inside any folder)." - hence why i put it on the root.
However iv tried choosing both the ROM inside my 'Downloads' folder as well as the one on the root of the phone, still get the same message!?

hello guys. i'm from Malaysia. i recently bought HTC Hero. currently have problem with downloading application for hero and malaysia dont have android market yet. is there any way i can download any application besides android market.
i got a few question also. what the purpose of rooting the hero. if im using it in malaysia. do i need to root. will it void my warranty. thanks.
Before you even think about rooting, first read this.
The only other way to get applications/games onto your Hero without the Marketplace is to manually open the apk installation file via using Linda File Manager. You don't need to root your phone for this.
If you made a backup of your Rom using nadroid, your original Rom should be safe and your phone is still under your warranty.
The only reason to root your phone is to be able to have access to hidden files, remove unnecessary programs, have useful ones already pre-installed, speed up the phone, etc.
If you have any other issues/questions regarding what I am talking about, read the link I provided you first. It should answer all your questions.

Sorry, but that is not correct. There are other Market-style applications out there that he can use. e.g. SlideME, which probably came on the phone. If it didn't, you can download it directly from the website onto your phone, and install it from the browser though you need to enable Menu->Settings->Applications->Unknown Sources ticked beforehand.

Sorry, but this isn't correct either! A *very* good reason for rooting is to use "Market Enabler" so that he can install the Market application, and enable it for a different region that supports paid apps. Other good reasons include tethering by wifi, and apps2sd.
Regards,
Dave
ok. thanks guys. does it means if i root my Hero then i can access the Market even i malaysia?
Essentially yes, though you will need to install the Market app and use the Market Enabler application to "spoof" the Market into believing your carrier is in a supported region.
Regards,
Dave
But a "problem" with this would be the phone would "believe" that you are in say "Netherlands" when you are in fact in Malaysia.
You can "solve" this by disabling automatic time / date. Enter it manually.
ok. i read on how to run app from sd card. one of the step need to flash ROM to SD card. is it ok if i use different ROM than my current Hero ROM.
As long as it is a Hero ROM, for the Hero (e.g. MoDaCo 3.0) you should be fine. You do need to be a little careful though, because devs have ported Hero/SenseUI to other phones (e.g. G1/Magic etc).
If you make a Nandroid backup before you flash the new ROM, you can always roll back to your previous ROM.

Dave
Hi all,
A few days ago i got my Xiaomi Mi2S 32gb. I have several problems with this device (wifi not working on my home wifi 95% of the time, play store stops working EVERY time after 1 second etc.) and therefore would like to update to the multi language rom. There is a simple guide that provides 2 options to do this.
1. The first one is by using the updater app that should be preinstalled
2. Flashing it using ROM manager --> reboot into recovery.
I currently have MIUI- JLB13.0 (stable) and android version 4.1.1 JRO03L.
Weirdly enough i do NOT have the folder "security center" and therefore do NOT have the updater application so this is not an option. The other option is flash it. I'm kind of a noob so i tried finding out how and it sais that i can use ROM manager for that. Just put the new rom on the sd card, reboot into recovery and voila. This application however has problems as there is no superuser found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su" meaning it is not rooted. Normally people can just go to the LBE guard in the folder "security center" and tell the phone it's ok to root, which is impossible in my case.
If i want to manage permissions and then go to manager root permission it sais "ROOT is not available in MIUI stable" and that i have to change to a developer version to enable root permission. Of course i can then download verion JLB18.0 but how on earth can i get it on there? I could use the MiFlashSetup provided by Xiaomi, but the phone it not recognized when i link it to my pc with USB so that doesn't work either...
I'm very frustrated right now, been working on this phone for days and it still doesn't work so please help me!

I just installed the 2.1 update on my child's Nabi 2. I would like to root it so that she could have some of the apps in the Google Play Store. Can I use Nabi Lab 2 to root it, or has there been an update since then? I download Nabi Lab 2, and it said in the instructions that I needed to be on version 1.9.37 so I was afraid to use it. Any information on how to root my Nabi 2 with the latest update on it would be greatly appreciated.

I guess the short answer is no you cannot use Nabi Lab, or any other program right now, to take a stock Nabi at 2.1.27 and install root and gapps.
The more descriptive version is: There is ~504MB of space where the ROM, root, and gapps(with Google Play) need to go. The 2.1.27 install takes I think around 497MB, root is small but uses ~1M, Gapps uses maybe ~40M. That puts ~538MB into what can only hold ~504MB. Basically it doesn't all fit.
There hasn't really been a consensus on what is the best method to work around this. The easiest is to delete some kids applications and use that space for Gapps. For example the Wings software(apks) is close to 100MB. Deleting that gives more then enough space, but it's not optimal for those that have kids that want Wings. It is by far the best bang for the buck. 2 huge files. A lot of the other kids software is 3-5MB, and you have to delete 8 or 9 of them.
The general premise would be:
Stock tablet on 2.1.27
Use NabiLab/or whatever to Install TWRP and then MAKE A BACKUP!
Install Root
In Android use a Root file explorer such as ES File Explorer(I think it's still downloadable on the Nabi store/Amazon) and delete some apps in /system/vendor/apps
Use TWRP/Nabilab to install Gapps.
OR
Stock tablet on 2.1.27
Use NabiLab/or whatever to Install TWRP and then MAKE A BACKUP!
Use TWRP file manager to delete some apps in /system/vendor/apps
Use TWRP/Nabilab to install Root and Gapps.
If that sounds like something you want to try but need more detail on exactly how let us know.
mehtuus just made a beta version of ROOT installer for Nabi that should remove Wings automatically. Easier then the by hand method, it's beta but he does good work.

Really depends on how much you would miss Wings. I think we will make a way to keep Wings. Just haven't got it there yet. It's not so much an issue, as it is: will you miss Wings app?
Can't get TWRP to work
I'm endlessly frustrated, and I'm hoping there is just some stupid little thing I'm overlooking.
Have an older Nabi 2. Rooted fine, Gapps working fine, great.
Have a newer Nabi 2 for my older child. I CANNOT cannot cannot get TWRP to install or work. I have the ADB drivers installed. It's recognized in the device manager. Nabi is connected. PDAnet is installed properly. ADB debugging is on. This is a brand new stock Nabi 2, version 2.1. I just keep getting the stupid dead red exclamation point android dude. I've used every method I have found on this site. NabiLab is what I used for the older Nabi with no problems. Example:
I run NabiLab. Device is detected, plugged in. Go to install recovery and root. It gets to the "Press enter when you see text on the screen after Nabi logo" and then the Nabi just gets stuck on the logo screen, indicating the drivers aren't installed. But they ARE installed. I'm about to throw this against the wall. I can reboot the device with the power and up keys and the "text on the screen" does appear, but it just goes to the dead android afterward. Can anyone help?
I'd be also interested in figuring out the definitive way to root and stick on gapps on this with the latest update.

It's pretty messy. Everyone seems to be rolling with the "delete Wings" way, but it haphazard and confusing to almost everyone. I'm still up in the air for a way to make an automated script for those that aren't technical and would like a one click solution.
Funny timing I just finished writing a post on my blog about it.

I am really confused about rooting my son's Nabi 2. Everyone says remove wings and it should be able to root, but I did that and still can't root it. Just curios if it is possible because I read a report that said there was software in the 2.1 update to stop people from rooting it. I've been going at this since noon and tried everyway I could find and it still doesn't work.
I'm not able to remove wings for some reason it cannot find it :/
Anyone have any suggestions?

If your only wanting a few gapps, and not full root there is a simple method.
Using your google chrome browser on your PC, download and install apk downloader extension for browser. Use any google account info from any rooted device to register with apk downloader. Then go to play store on browser, search for app u need, then instead of hitting install, click the apk downloader extension button in toolbar. It will download the apk to your PC. Then simply transfer the apk file to your nabi.
Hope this helps.
Question (and I've searched before posting)....
I have a Galaxy Note Pro 12.2, which is my office tablet, and just bought a Verizon Z2 Tablet for personal use. It has the latest FW installed, but I was able to root it without much fuss. Titanium BU and some other Root Apps work fine....EXCEPT that I can't install XPosed Framework. It keeps telling me that /System is not writable. Any idea how I can get around that? I've even tried making /System R/W within Root Explorer, but it doesn't do it.

You need to be on an older firmware to have root with system rw permission, then follow this instruction to update to newer fw maintaining root http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...how-to-root-sgp561-z2-tablet-verizon-t3054700

You can download the FTF file (using XperiFirm) for the older fw and flash it with flash tool.
Or you can try install XZDualRecovery flashable patched version (attached here) if you already had custom recovery installed (I'm not sure if it works):
I've got all the files, but I'm having some issues with Flashtool. This (attached) is the error message I keep getting when I start the app. I've done what the error message requested, but still receive the same error. My system is Win 8.1x64. That's literally the only thing preventing me from proceeding at this point.
I just installed it on another machine that runs Win8x64.....same error message. Anyone know what could be causing this? I have both 32 and 64 Bit Java installed, I permitted Unsigned Driver installation, copied the files per Error message, but still no-go. The only other thing I could try is my Win7x64 machine at the office, but I really don't want to install anything on my Office machine, especially since I work in IT Security and my system is Audited every 90 minutes.

do as the message says, MOVE that folder
Did that. It gave me the same error message on three different computers. One running Win 8.1x64, one running Win8x64 and one running Win7x32. Same exact error message, I've moved the folder but it still shows the error message.
Is there another way to create this?

I also used win8x64 but have no problem with that, just MOVE, do not COPY.
However, there are people reported the same issues, and their suggestion is to go back to the older version of Flashtool.
Thanks for all your help and tips. I talked to my Boss this morning about this (he's also a Gadget Freak), and he disabled the Auditing on my System for the day, so I installed everything here on my Office machine....worked like a charm. I now have the necessary file(s) needed to downgrade. I'll do that when I get home.
Just an update.....The Tablet is now rooted, Xposed installed, and working great. Just for experience, I flashed it a few times, built my own FTF, soft-bricked it, and got it back to life, running better than before. Again-thanks for your help and advice.

Hey Guys,
I have a couple questions about this android box I purchased that's had me somewhat puzzled.
I have been an avid android user over the past many years. I am familiar with flashing tons of roms to all the phones I have had. Except my s6, it just sucks for roms. Anyways I have purchased the android box in this link (can't post links this new) I can't seem to fine a manufacturer website, I've Google a million things about the box and searched but I can't find anything. even in the instruction book there's no website or anything.
basically I'm looking to figure out how to at least update this box. there's no option in about device. also I don't like how the flash drive on the device is split into nand flash and regular storage. I would like to merge them all into one. I am also looking for custom roms that might enable me to achieve that, however nowhere I look has this box in their forums or anywhere. maybe it's a cloned box? there are other boxes that have the exact same components (or so they say) with custom firmware, however I don't want to chance it and rich bricking this device.
anyone that can offer any help or lead me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance!

I just picked up one of these about a week ago and found instructions to install TWRP and update SuperSU. The box had 'root' out of the box but it was some specialized root based on an old version of SuperSU (1.93 I believe).
I have successfully installed TWRP 2.8.7.0 and updated to SuperSU 2.46.
Since this is just an android tablet essentially, does anyone know if you can flash these ROMs through TWRP?
Not to my knowledge, just use above tool. It will go alive once you are in bootloader with usb otg cable connected to win (of course with driver pack etc. installed). Titanium or else can do that, instead of trying to press reset button while powering on. Of course recovery will go back to default.

Havent tried liamstears yet. Feedback if you do please.
awesome thanks! thats what I suspected when I was going through the firmwares for these devices. I just wasn't sure if the z4 rk3368 device would work on this one. I've seen a few brands with z4 and as I know with phones.. wrong brand and you're bricked lol. anyways.. I ended up buying a tronsmart vega s95 telos.. but it didn't come rooted. so I rooted it and now I'm getting play services force close and all sorts of bugs and errors.. maybe I'll just keep the z4. it seems to work better.
what link did you follow to get twrp installed?? same thing I'm guessing, punch z4 twrp in google and eventually come upon the right place.
12/22 factory firmware? mines stuck at Nov 10 I think.. it won't let me update using the rk settings app.. which is why I was fed up with it in the first place lol.
12/22 firmware. Unified 16gb App storage. More available with microsd card. Fully functional Kodi with channels, etc. 4k HEVC x265 movies. Youtube 1080p.
Easiest method to update rom is to put extracted update.img from zip file
http://chinagadgetsreviews.blogspot.ro/2016/01/download-latest-android-lollipop-511.html?m=1
on a sdcard / usb and boot. After about a minute into the Android desktop, system will ask for update prompt. Only applicable to system still with default recovery.
If you have some stability issues or with different recovery, you can backup your apps / data with Titanium etc. and then use above Factory tool restore new rom.
These roms usually come with their own recovery, but some modded ones with TWRP/full root, supersu and all. But you dont really need them.
thanks a lot man! I'm downloading right now and will test it on my box tomorrow after work!
I've tried 100 times and it just keeps saying failed to mount /mnt/external_sd (no such device)
I'm using my USB flash drive.
this is becomming a huge pain in the just to update I'm starting to think why this company can make these products and not have any support or anything for it . and that flash tool is in mandarin and I can't even figure out how to work that. I put in the update.img and press go.. but whenever I try to boot to download mode like you mentioned in one of the posts it just turns off the box.. this thing is literally a piece of junk. and so is this tronsmart vega s95.. same thing. it's extremely frustrating. whoever developed this z4 box did a really chappy job on the firmware.. and I do not recommend it to anyone..
If you had gone through the instructions pdf, it clearly shows how to change into English by pressing the World icon. Remember in bootloader mode the tv screen would be black, if you are using the tool. The big red button will turn into green to show readiness.
For automatic update you dont even have to go into recovery as seen in attached image. Easiest.
Hi Roland,
love to see that there are already XDA-members looking at the Z4 TV box. I have just ordered one and hope to get it within a few weeks. Just some dumb questions, hoping you can provide me with some information:
- I see that there are several 'versions' of the Z4: for instance Acemax, but I have ordered the Andoer. Are those just different manufacturers?
- Are there any differences in model/content (installed app's) per manufacturer?
- If my Andoer turned out to have an older firmware than the 22/12, could I still use the Acemax 22/12 firmware you refered to in your link?
- Kodi will be preinstalled, I saw. I do not know what version of Kodi that will be, but can it just be updated to the most recent version in the Google Play Store?
- I do not know what other apps are installed, but is it possible to de-install apps you do not need, or are they part of the firmware and impossible to delete
I know, part of the answers I surely will discover once I got the Z4, but I just can't wait to start experimenting, even it is only in my mind
Thanks in advance!
Jos
hi Roland
I tried that batch tool first which is the one I couldn't change languages in lol. but the other tool with the red button I changed into English. however I did not know that it would remain blank when in download mode. I will have to give it one more go tonight with it. I figured that I loaded it into bootloader and the z4 box light turned red so I thought it was off and didn't load to bootloader.
I also did the USB update and it would just fail on me every time I used it. the update prompt did come up and I pressed install. perhaps I need to check if USB debugging is on. I think it is but it wouldn't hurt to check. but I think I will have to go through the factory tool to update way for sure.
thanks for your help roland, I will write back after I give it another go tonight!
i can't find the 22/12 update ! can anybody share the link direct to firmware ?
@DriftJos
l have got an Andoer too. Most of these brands come from the same hardware factory and thus have the same specs/apps.
Yes you will use the same firmware https://mega.nz/#!JBBXgDgC!VSra8Hc6KR77Pvdw67eDpjeT_ku-TXdYgYaInSAfyvU (direct link @prisim) or several user dev roms. Unified 16gb app storage etc and the works.
You can uninstall bundled Kodi (by Titanium free etc.) by official Kodi Jarvis 16.0 beta 5 & such with pass-through support test builds @ http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=252852
Again you will be able to uninstall useless apps directly or through Titanium.

Always mention the firmware version you are having and which recovery? The automatic update should work if you still have the factory recovery.
Check the FactoryTool process in attached images.
I'm trying to flash the firmware that I downloaded from that China gadgets site that was mentioned on this thread. I think it's the stock 12/22 for the device. and I have stock recovery.
I extracted the update.exe file and saved it to my USB drive plugged it in and restarted. relieved the update prompt. chose install update and it rebooted into recovery and tried to apply the update but it fails. I'm not ready to give up yet with this device lol. it's just another platform I have to learn. it took me a bit with smartphones to figure it out back in the day.. perhaps it's the same thing now..
and I'm updated to 12/22.. awesome. those pictures really helped me man thanks.
now as for installing twrp and all that. you mentioned that it's not really needed? I'm assuming I can flash any rom given they are in .img format using factory tool. however the benefit of twrp would be an easier interface for creating nandroid backups and clearing cache/factory reset. perhaps I will install it. i might give leamstears rom a try. I will let you know how it is if I do.
thanks again!
so I updated to the new 12/22.. everything works fine except with Google play store.. I keep getting a can't retrieve source error with everything I try to download. I've refreshed and factory reset the firmware 5 times now and kept trying.
so I got fed up with the stock so I tried leamstears rom and it works great.. except sometimes it just becomes completely unresponsive. I'm starting to think there is something wrong with this box. even on stock firmware from the box I've been having issues with unresponsive freezing.
what do you think of the nvidia shield?

The PlayStore error you were seeing is because the 12/22 firmware comes with a *very* old version (5.2.x). The PlayStore will eventually update everything to the latest version by itself but if you don't want to wait, go over to apkmirror.com and download PlayStore 6.0.5 and install it manually. Once you do, it should also update the Play Services to 8.4.x and your should be good to go. I had this issue as well but I had seen it before and knew I needed to update.
So far the 12/22 version has been great, and having the unified internal storage is a huge plus.
If you feel so inclined, knowing that some of the custom builds of Kodi take up a large amount of space... there is this trick that was introduced in Helix:
http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Change data location for Android
This will allow you to have only the Kodi app on internal storage (~125 MB) and any data from addons/programs etc. in another location (such as an external SD).
I often
1. Install Kodi on internal storage
2. Zip up the contents of org.xbmc.com directory
3. Copy it to external storage
4. Unzip it in /external_sd/kodi_data
5. Create the xbmc_env.properties file that references my Kodi data location.
6. Delete the contents of /sdcard/Android/data/org.xbmc.com/
Voila! You have freed up internal storage.... You can also persist a Kodi setup this way or run multiple custom installs. If you re-image your media box, you can re-install Kodi and as long as the xbmc_env.properties points to your external_sd with your Kodi data, it will start right up back into your setup... :good:
