Hello,
Yesterday I rooted my z5c, and today i have gotten notification about Nougat update, so i wondered is there a way to update my phone and still have root access, if not can someone explain me what to do, and yeah I made a mistake as I am beginner and haven't backed up DRM keys is there any way to recover that, so far I haven't noticed that I lost anything but as I haven't backed it up I guess I lost it.
Thank you in advance, T1n3k!
If you're rooted, you shouldn't update with the Sony update functionality. I you want to update to another version, feel free and use XperiFirm/Flashtool. After doing that, you need to patch again to gain root access. If you browse through the top topics in this subforum, you'll find enough guides which can help you through the process.
Once you've unlocked your bootloader, you can't backup your DRM keys anymore. In fact that doesn't matter, because there's still the DRM-fix available. It gives you about the same functionality.
So I basicly do what I've done for this root with New firmware? And are you maybe able to send me link with DRM-fix, thank you for fast response!

Okay, here is the situation: I have an Atrix (obviously) that I rooted using the Gingerbreak.exe downloaded from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046626. I just tried to update my phone to Gingerbread using the OTA update in About Phone and it failed; I’m assuming it is because I have rooted the device (if not please correct me and tell me what I did wrong). So I hopped onto these forums looking for a way to undo the root, or a way to get the update to work, and my eyes have glazed over. Could someone please tell me how to unroot my atrix before i use it as a hockey puck
I posted a thread very similar to this. You should look around.

Now honestly, I have no idea why it didnt let you update, since I used SuperOneClick with Gingerbreak and it seemed to work after updating, Didn't really test out any SU apps but I still had it. To think of it, It's kinda useless for me to state that, however it states success...
One of the options for you, since you are still on Froyo and apparently rooted are to install Gingerbreak 1.2. I'm not 100% sure if it will work, but i do know it can't harm your device.
After you install Gingerbreak 1.2, you should root again, then after the reboot, reopen the app and unroot. This method should be flawless since you did re-root with the app. But again, Not 100% sure. And right now you can unlock your bootloader and just start loading if you'd like. That is a much easier and safer way to do it. Plenty of tuts on Android Dev forum here.
lol don't worry about unrooting. I'll tell you that much.
It's not so much of a problem with root, but moreso the pre-test that accompanies the OTA. If you fail it because you use Titanium to clear out bloatware and stuff like that. even if you remove root, you still won't be able to upgrade. Instead, just use this method.
Just download the Automated Upgrade for PC Users and let your phone upgrade. All your data should still be there, but backup before just in case. Oh, and if you wanna root again after you upgrade (cause i mean, why WOULDN'T you want root?!), just use the preinstall method (hehe I'll leave this for you to search. it'll be good practice for the future, i promise =])
happy upgrading!

Hi,
I rooted my Z2 tablet a few days ago and have found that I don't really need the advantages it brings (from what I can tell). SO - I want to get it back to the way it was when I first opened the box.
I have seen threads about different devices and how to restore them to factory or stock (??), but they seem to call for specific files or flash software. So that brings me once again to this forum to figure out whether anyone can direct me to some instructions on how to do this. I figure it shouldn't be too hard. Just being careful.
Thanks very much for the advice once again.
I think if you flash the rootable kernel again, you could use an unrooting tool to undo the root. I'm also aware that there are files that you can flash to re-lock the bootloader (I once did this with an Xperia mini pro, although I'm not sure if such file exists for this tablet) but the DRM keys are lost forever a.f.a.i.k. But at least if you manage to re-lock the bootloader you will be able to install F/W upgrades through official ways again.

THank you for the response. Unfortunately i'm not even sure how I would go about flashing 'the rootable kernel'.... Feeling a bit foolish for getting into this actually.
From what i'm reading, it seems like I need to get the stock software and start again. So i'm looking for the 'FTF' for my tablet, which is a SGP511. Not having any luck though.
Which was the process that you followed to root it?

It was on another site - can't remember which. It got the clockwork mod installed. I think? Or was that just a recovery thing? No idea.
I'm actually now just doing a factory reset to see what happens, and it said 'root access possibly lost' in the process, which I thought was a good sign. Guess i'll keep tinkering with enough caution to eventually get the warranty back in tact.
Hopefully the loss of DRM doesn't effect the warranty.
In that case I guess you will have to download a firmware ftf file of an official unmodded firmware (preferably one of your region but I think especially if you have the wifi-only version it doesn't matter much as long as it contains the interface and input languages that you need), and install (or "flash") that using Flashtool. After that the root will certainly be gone and if you could then find a file to relock your bootloader I think your warrenty will be fine. I honestly don't think that Sony service and repair personel will check for DRM keys every time before repairing a device.
UPDATE
Factory reset appears to have gotten things back to normal. My plan is now just to unroot using an unroot tool (app i guess?) and then to lock the bootloader some how as well.

So it's certain that the tablet is still rooted at this moment? Some superuser apps have an option to do a full unroot, such as SuperSU, you could try that
That's great. I think that's sorted it out. SuperSU had the full unroot option and it looks like it's all sorted.
Thanks for the help.
Hi!
I have the SGP311 with the 4.2.2 Version of Android. Back then I rooted it using the tool VRoot (i think that was the name).
As all I wanted was root for TiBackup I left it at that. Stock ROM, some modifications through root access, but I saw no need to go further.
I would now like to update. OTA does not work, either because I am root or because the bootloader unlock (which I think happened during the root process).
There are so many guides out there, some contradictory or rather relying on going from certain versions to the newest.
What is my best bet?
Unroot and Relock, OTA update, then re-root? Is there a Guide to that?
Or how do I get a recovery on there easily? Guide?
Then assuming I have recovery on, what do I flash. Sony has grown on me, so I am happy with a stock rom or something very close to it, if I can root it for my mods.
What is the least dangerous way to get this tablet up to date?
Thanks for your help!

Vroot would not have unlocked the tablet's boot loader, so are you sure it is unlocked? And have you tried using Sony PC Companion to update the firmware? I was going to recommend trying to use Sony Mobile Update Service, which I preferred over PC Companion, but it appears Sony stopped supporting it.
Hey guys, I saw that it is now possible to root the Sonzy Z2 build 17.1.2.a.0.314.
I've seen a lot of posts about boot loaders, and TA partitions, and I don't really know what it means. So my question is this:
If I root my device, without unlocking the bootloader, will this have any adverse effects on my phone? So will I lose the ability to use the Sony stuff, or will my camera app stop working?
If any one could answer these questions it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance guys!
Rooting wont have any bad effects on your phone, it just means that apps that need root access can get it, you need root to backup the TA partition which is only lost if you unlock your bootloader, rooting means you will lose the OTA system updates but not OTA app updates in the update centre app. It wont affect the camera AFAIK.
Hello, I have a lg leon phone I rooted and I do not know how to get the stagefright patch for it since the device will now not accept the OTA updates because of rooting. Can someone tell me or show me help to get this patch installed. I rooted the device with kingroot and aside from backing up apps using Titanium backup I did not do any backup methods for the phone. I am guessing I will be forced to do a clean setup of the phone now? Can this be accomplished with the phone in its current state if required to install the stagefright patch? Please have patience with me as I am new to rooting and probably made some mistakes. Thank you.

As a quick workaround, you can add this to your build.prop:

It is a bit risky to edit system files without a custom recovery and a nandroid backup though. Definitely recommend TWRP recovery. It's available for the Metro and T-Mobile versions, but dunno about other ones. Easy to install, either via the TWRP Manager app or an app like Flashify or Rashr should work, if you just download the appropriate img file.
Thank you so much for this great info. I learned something new today and love that stuff. Have a great day.
