Help updating custom ROM - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hi!
I have a Kindle Fire HDX 7 (Thor).
Some time ago I installed safestrap and flashed a CM 11 ROM in stock slot.
Now I want to update this ROM, but I can't find new ROMs with safestrap support.
Can I unlock bootloader, install TWRP and flash LineageOS?
Can I use this 1click tool? https://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/general/multi-platform-1-click-bootloader-t3241014
Safestrap version: 4.01 (TWRP 2.7.0.1)
ROM, not the last update. https://forum.xda-developers.com/ki...-cm-11-safestrap-20150628-unofficial-t3145547
Thank you for help!

Hey man, I'm in the same exact boat but can't get any of those steps to work, could you explain better what was done as I really need to get off from CM11 and move to something better and supported.

Happy to provide more detailed guidance (several have taken a similar leap) but will be traveling the next few days with limited XDA access. You can find everything you need in the HDX forum (several threads dedicated to the topic) or just hang tight until I return.

Sorry but now I can't remember precisely what I did.
None of the steps works? I remember that the first step (generate the unlock code) was flawless.
If even the first step doesn't work maybe you have adb drivers problem, so check the prerequisites section here https://forum.xda-developers.com/ki...r-firmware-t3463982/post70881555#post70881555

[Q] Questions about Root, Safestrap & Gapps for the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9"

Hey,
I am about to get a new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 64gb tomorrow and I'm already checking how to root the tablet and get all the Gapps up and running.
Unfortunately there are still a few things which are a little bit confusing for me at the moment:
1. Which is the best way to make sure that the Kindle Fire does not install an OTA update on its own? I mean it can not be the solution to keep the tablet in airplane mode all the time, that is ridiculous! I read about several ways to block OTA updates, installing a firewall, changing a value in the build.prop or renaming a certain file in den /system/ folder. Which way has to be proven to be the best way?
2. After gaining root I will install Safestrap and flash the official Amazon Rom to a slot. Is there a size for the Rom partition which is recommended? I have seen Safestrap now supports up to 16gb.
3. After booting the Amazon Rom from a Safestrap slot, can you do an OTA update or will this affect the whole system?
4. Can someone please point me to the correct and latest version Gapps for the 8.9" model (Apollo)?
I'm pretty sure I will come up with more questions tomorrow, but that's for now!
Thanks for your help ...

Once you complete the process to make dual-system (both Gapps and Amazon) the HDXposed module will block updates.

It seems to be known the Xposed mod doesn't block updates. If you want the tab for the specs but also as close as possible to a stock android experience. I would recommend how I did it with SS on both stock and rom slot, airplane moding the stock slot and never going back there unless necessary. Also try to rename the files and if possible try to mod the build if you think fit.
Just my 0.02.

Thanks for all the help! After some back and forth I now have the most things working and it's a great device, but I still have one questions. Does Google+ work for anyone of you? As soon as I open the Google+ app it crashes immediately and goes back to the launcher. Did anyone have similar experience and knows how to fix that?
Thanks!

Same as kschang with same version of Google+ (latest version). HDX 7 with 13.3.1.0 firmware. It's run fine with Cpasjuste's ROMs (both the Thor Gapps and the AOSP ROMs) as well as stock ROM with Cpastjuste's Gapps zip installer.
Hi
I've also got HDX 8.9 14.3.1.0 Apollo. How did you get supersu installed?
I've got the UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99r4.zip
The author recommends installing through Google Play.
But if I turn off airplane mode I'll get updated, so I can't do that.
Other option is to install supersu through CWM, TWRP or MobilOdin.
But they also require Google Play to install.
I'm on linux. What should I do?

I mean Christ the best I can find is this: http://blog.julianxhokaxhiu.com/entry/how-to-install-supersu-on-hamlet-zelig-pad-210g
But he's got a custom install script. There's no install.sh file in the zip I got.
Some old threads look promising (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410223) but will BurritoRoot or whatever worked on Kindle Fire 2 years ago work for Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 Apollo???
If you got all this working, it would be great if you could just unpack all the instructions you went through. No links and trying to be timeless lillypads for the future, just a detailed case study.

[Q] Need Custom Bootloader & ROM "How To" Help

Hey. After spending hours trying to discover a working method to root my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4, I've succeeded. Now, I want to try to install some sort of bootloader like TWRP or something so I can install a custom ROM. What do I install and HOW do I install a bootloader? I'm confused. I also want to install the the latest CyanogenMod for it. I think I can do that on my own after getting a bootloader installed on my phone, but what file am I supposed to be installing is the question. Thank you for any and all help. This is my first smartphone, so I'm trying to figure this out.

Right now the bootloader is still locked down for the Verizon (unless your phone is on the MDK bootloader). So unfortunately you won't be able to do more than root the phone. You can use Safestrap to use some ROMs, but I don't think CM exists for the Verizon S4.

Oh, that's a shame. I was looking forward to this part. I wondered why I only found outdated information or a lack of information. I don't even know what a good ROM would be for this phone if there's no Cyanogen for it. Well I appreciate your reply very much. Thank you.

There is a Cyanogen build for the Verizon GS4 but as mentioned, only for folks with the MDK bootloader. Only TouchWiz based roms can be used with SafeStrap - no AOSP based roms (yet).
To see what bootlader you are on, just go to ABOUT PHONE under settings.

Need help making a couple choices

Hey guys, so the last phone I rooted and had a bootstrap on with custom roms was the Motorola Droid x2. We couldn't even get into the kernel. So with that being said I've acquired super user on my g3 months ago to freeze apps. But now I don't depend on my phone like I did then for work. So I want to do the whole thing and I'm unsure what choices to make. I'm not looking for a guide for installing stuff (at least not yet ) just trying to get suggestions and hopefully good recommendations.
So here's the main point for the post
TLDR!!!!!
Current android version 5.0.1
kernels- unlock it? Change it? Not sure what all you can actually do with that.
Bootstrap- clock work mod? Or any other one can't think of names but need something to load roms
Rom for battery and power- cyanogenmod is what I use to run on the x2 not sure if it's still one of the best?
Anything else I missed that I should get and check out?
Thanks in advance
Put TWRP custom recovery on your phone with the autorec TWRP app by @bender_007, in the General section of the non-variant specific G3 sections. Once you give the app superuser permissions it looks like it's hung up but give it 10-30 seconds because it's backing up your current recovery. Then click the button to install TWRP. Download the latest TWRP v2.8.7.0 from its thread also somewhere in the G3 sections, and flash it from your current TWRP.
I use @xdabbeb 's VS985 v2.0 ROM, which is based on the latest official LG ROM, build 35B, based on Android 5.1.1. Very happy with it, very smooth and great on battery.
I haven't heard the term bootstrap with regards to custom recoveries. I'd suggest just calling them custom recoveries.
Thanks for your input it's been a while after I read it I was like yep it's custom recoveries lol thank you again

Updating LS990 ZV4 4.4.2 - Procedure?

Forgive a rather newbie question - been out of the game for a few years as I changed industries for a while. I'm back in IT and need to get my G3 all nice and current. It's not rooted at the moment and is running 4.4.2 - I believe fairly stock. I really love this phone and don't want to brick it and have to buy another so I'm just looking for a quick confirmation that updating it will be pretty straight forward. Getting it rooted would be nice but likely not required for my use.
Thanks for any quick tips you guys can provide and again my thanks.
-Ross
Well I suppose I'll answer my own question as it was rather easy. Here's what I did starting from 4.4.2 (stock)
- Reset device using Settings
- Installed Stump Root and rooted (via brute force)
- Installed TWRP
- Downloaded the unofficial CM 14.1 ROM and Gapps (I did the stock download)
- Flashed TWRP recovery and rebooted into recovery
- Wiped partitions (not MicroUSB or storage)
- Flashed the ROM and GApps
- Done!!
So far all seems to be working fantastic, looking to root it now (which might not be possible...)

Kenzo bootloop problems, any new rom

Hi Guys and greetings from the UK,
Recently i flashed the latest RR, Nitrogen and Pure roms and none of the boot. I'm just wondering if this is down to the unofficial bootloader unlock method. Could somebody either confirm or refute this please?
What options to i have to use the latest roms if it is to do with the BL?

Goodix support was added in the most recent update.
It's CAF based, so Citrus will give you better and more stable signal than AOSP or LineageOS based ROMs
Hi i have flashed the rom and it wont boot im afraid. I just have the lemon/lime logo. Same as all the other roms.
Any idea?
Do i need a specific recovery?
I followed the instructions.
If i flash custom kernel do i do this before or after the ROM?

At first make a backup of your working ROM in TWRP (I think we can skip that step in your case)
Wipe Data/System/Internal Storage/Dalvik and Cache
Install ROM, install GApps (Android 7.1 - 64 Bit)
Reboot to System
First reboot can take 5 - 10 minutes, so don't give up if the lemon appears on your screen. Just wait a few minutes.
Everything will be working out of the box. If for some reason you want to try different kernels, just reboot to recovery, flash the kernel of you liking and reboot.

Hmmm,
Thanks for helping me, i must say. Nothing seems to be working for me. I've done as you described exactly and it just isn't booting.
I've been flashing roms forever on multiple handsets so i am very used to doing this. it just seems that no matter what i try, no matter what rom they refuse to boot.
I have to go back to an older rom or restore from twrp
I'm going to start again and follow your instructions step by step again.
Then im going to allow it 30 minutes to boot.
I will let you know.

One last idea would be to update your firmware before flashing the ROM. You will find it here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/cm14-14-1-aosp-n-firmware-kenzo-kate-t3507789
Flash firmware, wipe, flash ROM, flash GApps, reboot
Ok i will try this if the long wait method doesnt work
Ok its just started to boot. the time is 11:50 - i will leave it until 12:20
Ok so its 12:20 and its still on the lemon/lime screen. Ill try your firmware idea now.
Nope. it wont allow me to flash the citrus rom with the older cm 14 firmware.

Your problem is probably lp bootloader. You need to be on mm bootloader to flash latest nougat roms.
Your options.
1. Best option: flash latest global dev rom in fastboot and unlock officially.
2. Try unofficial way if for some reason official unlock didn't work : http://en.miui.com/thread-345728-1-1.html

You've basically answered your own question when you tried it and it didn't work.
Follow what JLius said or if you don't want to download large files you can try the "(experimental)updated method" posted here. Do note that I don't know if it would work if you're already unofficially unlocked as I've tried that with locked bootloader. I can guarantee it works(as in you can flash latest ROMs as long as you have 7.5.4 firmware and above) on Kate although some kenzo users stated that it worked on them.
I wonder why this isn't causing more problems for other people. I fail to believe that i'm the only person using an unofficially unlocked boot loader.

No, you are not, forums are clogged with people reporting this same problem over and over. Do yourself a favor and do as I told you.
Thanks for the help. Shame about the rudeness but thanks for the help.

You're welcome.
I am not rude. Try answering the same questions 10 times a day for 60 days. I think I'll stop doing that, let someone else do it or let 'm figure it out for themselves.
"Do yourself a favor and do as I told you."
This is rude. Plain and simple. There is no sentence you can now string together which will make that any less rude either.
I suggest that if you are getting frustrated by helping people, stop doing it. I don't want to feel guilty about asking for help if that's all the same to you.
Belittling people you don't know isn't an admirable trait.
Either way i thanked you for your help, lets leave it at that.
