Device: Samsung Galaxy S4 SM S975L - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good Morning,
I have a Galaxy S4 Model SM S975L. I first rooted my phone back in 2014 and loved every moment. With that said I have not been able to preform updates because I have rooted my phone. Over the few years I have noticed a dramatic difference in my phones performance (losing signal in the middle of civilization the biggest). I have been attempting to unroot my device the last few months so that I can update it, but my device status remains "custom". I don't have a laptop readily available so I have been attempting to accomplish it via my device to no prevail. Kingo root says my phone is not rooted. I know I need to bring it back to the stock firmware. I have read about Odin and Kies, and I wonder if that will help with my specific device or if I should go another route. Is there a way I can flash stock firmware on my device with out a PC? Any advice will be helpful. Thank You.
PS im not worried about any warranties, Its a straight talk phone. I just want to update it away from my 2014 version of Jellybean 4.3 :/

[Q] Galaxy SIII Bricked? Not flashed / rooted.

Hey there. First of all I'm sorry of my bad english.
So I bought Galaxy S3 2 weeks ago. I started phones camera and phone suddenly shut down (got bricked?) Phone is not rooted / flashed. It worked well until now. Phone has 24 months warranty/guarantee, so I dont want to lose it by manually flashing.
What happens? Look this video by me:
if embed not working use this: youtube.com/watch?v=W_PsHpAgSpI
*Volume down + menu + power button combination works, but there is no factory reset option*
Can you help me? What I can do?
If only way to rescue phone is to flash it, can you link me a tutorial and if I do it, can I upload phone via Kies anymore? Will it stay "official".
Fundamental element in order to be able to complete the update process of the Galaxy is to have a firmware entirely original. If you have on your phone a test version, root permissions enabled or a modified kernel installed (e.s , CF-Root) will be unable to update.
Kies in fact, in these cases will not be able to recognize the correct version of the software installed on the Galaxy s3.Finally, in order to be able to update without problems with the tool journal Samsung there is a requirement that many neglect themselves and to which do not lend themselves never attention.
Kies allows you to install updates only if the firmware currently installed on the device coincides with the one provided for your Product Code. For the person who has carried out a procedure of root In this case we can do nothing other than install the firmware manually through the tool Odin.Follow the guide Update firmware with odin ;http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969

[Q] Help rooted for wrong ota

Hi all,
Im new to the forum and did some searching but cant find the info i need. I tried rooting my verizon note 2 to casuals one click and didnt realize i had updated to android 4.3 prior. So it tried to root 4.1.2. Now my phone has the yellow triangle and says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." I tried kies and kies 3 and neither one recognizes my phone. The only way to shut the phone off is to pull the battery. When i reinstall the battery i have a brief window to volume down+home+power and it takes me to odin. I saw this problem in the forums for roms but couldnt find anything on rooting. Please tell me i can fix this and go back to stock, and i didnt lock my phone up for good.I know im an idiot and i didnt back up anything. Ive learned my lesson and will do more research before attempting this again.I also realized there is no root for 4.3 yet. My phone was stock before i tried all this. Its the verizon sch-1605.Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Couple of things:
- if you've received the 4.3 update, your bootloader is locked and (currently) un-touchable. Don't try to flash, well, anything.
- if you've received the 4.3 update, you've also received Samsung's odius KNOX technology. If you do try to flash anything most things (especially recoveries), you'll trip the KNOX counter and invalidate your warranty (I believe it also means you can't use your phone in enterprise setups that use KNOX)
The good news is that you can restore your phone to working order! You'll need to install the Verizon Software Upgrade Assistant. XDA member scoobysnack posted a link to download the software, though you can also get it from any functioning Verizon Samsung smartphone that's plugged into a computer.
After you've installed the software, turn your phone on and plug it into the computer. Run the software and select the tab on the left column titled 'Repair'. Click on the repair button near the right side and sit back & wait. The software will download the 4.3 OTA and install it. Like ODIN, it is imperative that you not unplug your phone during this process.
If you have trouble getting the software to recognize your phone, it may help to put it into download mode. I had to go through this myself (I foolishly forgot about the bootloader issue and tried to flash a recovery. Sigh).
You can achieve root for 4.3, but there are some serious concerns about Kingo, the software the provides root. XDA doesn't allow links to them due to unanswered questions about privacy concerns due to unusual traffic capture going between the software and (apparently) servers in China
thanks so much. ill try it in the morning when i get off work.
Also when i was in odin and plugged my phone in, the software on the pc didnt recognize my phone either. Is that something i should worry about. I guess the box was supposed to turn green but never did. Many thanks
ok so i got home today and tried downloading verizon software update from the link you gave and it wont open the program. Ive tried on 2 different computers. so i called verizon tech to see if they have it cause i can only find it on the website described eariler, and they said they dont have it. Its only in your phone. Well i cant access my phone to get it and im stumped. They said to go into a verizon store and they should be able to fix it. What are my options? I dont have any data on the phone i need to save so can i just go back to a previous version or wipe it out? Or do i have to do a custom rom? Thanks in advance.

When you go into ODIN mode (turn off your phone, power on using POWER+HOME+VOL-DOWN), do you a line that reads 'KNOX WARRANTY VOID'? It would be in the upper left corner under 'SYSTEM STATUS'.
I ask because if you don't have that line, you didn't upgrade to 4.3 and your bootloader is NOT locked. You should be able to flash to 4.1.2 from ODIN and go from there (CASUAL to unlock & root, et cetera).
If you do have that line, then your only option is the VZW Software assistant. I'm uploading it now and I'll send you a link via PM. Please keep in mind that if you use the VZW Software assistant, whether your bootloader is currently locked or not, it most definitely will be locked after using it. If you're already locked, no harm done, but I'd make sure first.

[Q] S6 Edge Bricked SM-G925I

So, I rooted my phone, went to ROM Manager and pressed...something (not sure what). My phone then rebooted automatically and said "Custom binary blocked by Reactivation Lock". I gather this is because I didn't click some option on my phone before it restarted.
So then I started looking for ROM's or anything to bring the phone back online. I downloaded Odin and tried installing a ROM and I get "Custom Binary(RECOVERY) Blocked By R/L"
So now, I'm trying to download the stock firmware but, the problem is...I have no clue which firmware to use. I don't have access to much on my phone other then what I can see on the back of the phone.
SM-G925I UD
My provider is GCI out of Alaska and my phone is unlocked from the store. Which firmware do I use because from what I've read, SM-G925I is an international version and I'm not sure which I should use.
One thing to note...I'm the worst nerd ever when it comes to this. Thank you so much for any help you guys can give.
I did the same thing...

I have same phone, same carrier, and after rooting I was messing with different options and ended up with the same error message. After several hours of searching, trying different methods without success, I found a video on youtube called, "Samsung Smart Switch for PC Flashing Firmware to Galaxy S6 Edge" and I was able to reflash the phone to the stock firmware using the emergency recovery option "Device Initialization". I had to put in the s/n of the phone, hopefully you still have it on a label somewhere. Anyway, after the restore, it was upgraded from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1. and the Carrier boot animation was gone. Now time to re-root!
Hopefully you find a successful solution to your issue, good luck!
I want root without the problems

I have the same phone with the same carrier; I live in Anchorage. I haven't done much tinkering yet because I don't want to break my phone, but if this works-- I would really like to be able to root my phone and upgrade it to Marshmallow when it becomes available. Can either (or both) of you confirm that this method did work for you to get the SM-G925I rooted and working again with GCI?
Thanks!

[/COLOR]here is the firmware for the s6 edge g925i that i could find on the firmware section ..http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G925I/
Just download samsung kies on your computer, put your phone in download mode and then do a emergency software recovery (can be found from some option on samsung kies)
Have any of you other Alaskans with GCI successfully loaded Marshmallow onto your G925I? I managed to root my S6 Edge successfully using CF-Autoroot but I am hesitant to try and flash another firmware from Chile, or Uruguay, or India etc onto the device because I'm worried about disabling the radio or other region specific settings that will cause my phone to lose connectivity. I have made a full backup using Flashfire and backed up other relevant data but I would rather know about others' experiences before I recreate the same problems that have already been done over and over again. None of the firmwares available on sammobile.com seem to match up with what I have now (I attached a picture of my current firmware).
Any help or experience is very much appreciated.
Nougat and Going Strong
I'm just providing an update since there aren't a lot of links to S6 Edge and GCI Alaska on XDA. Since this phone is starting to get a little older and I had been successfully running Marshmallow for a year or so I decided to push my luck and see if I could get Nougat running. I'm very happy to say that after a couple of failed attempts with some other versions not running well, I installed Samstock 7.0 using the install instructions on https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...unified-development/rom-samstock-rom-t3649798 and I am pleased to say that it is running very smoothly and I am happy that I did so. I had pretty awful battery life with it at first, but after installing Root Booster and setting the basic battery saving option I am back to 24 hours or so between recharges. I couldn't be happier that this device which shipped with Lollipop has been upgraded all the way to Nougat and is still going strong.

Sm-g965f root unroot complete restore stock status possible?

Hi guys,
So a couple years ago i was highly active in Android modding. I have plenty of experience with rooting the international variants of samsung s3, nexus 5, nexus 6p, samsung galaxy ACE and an old samsung galaxy Tab.
I also rooted my huawey p10 plus once but reflashed it to stock.
But since then i was more or less inactive on this subject and want to come back now to install adblocker, battery charge manager, xposed v4a and so on. So if i want to install such applications i have to get root.
Now heres my question, will i ever be able to go back to complete stock status on my s9+ (sm-g965f) (exynos)? Like is there a way to reset things like the flash tamper flag on the nexus 5 via script flashing was possible or will the phone once rooted have some kind of mark that cannot be changed if its set once?
Also i need to be able to execute snapchat, netflix and stuff, this k already managed via magisk on an old s6e+.
Im asking this probably rockstupid sounding question because i heard of this fuse samsung built into devices like the s6 i think wich chould not be reset if once blown due to physical changes.. and i dont want to be stuck with a mark that cannot be removed due to rooting the device. (Atleast as long im paying a set payment schedule for the device).
Thank you all for constructive answers.
Greetings
Not possible as of now

Unroot old phone

I just recently damaged my new phone and my only option is to use one of my old phones. I just found out that 7 or 8 years ago I had rooted this phone and I am wanting to update the android firmware. I tried to update from the push notification but it does not work. I am thinking either the root or CWM is not letting it auto update.
I no longer need root and have been out of touch with the modding community for a long time. I am sure there is a simple way to do it. I just have no idea where to start. I just want a stock phone. I would appreciate some help thanks.
The phone is a Sprint galaxy S3 Model Number SPH-L710 Android Version 4.1.2
