So I backed up all the system and user apps before installing the custom ROM CynaogenMod 10. I restored the user apps and it worked fine. Then I tried restoring the system apps and I had to choose to restore from either XML or system image. I chose system image, rebooted and the phone kept restarting. I then tried using the XML file to restore system files. Again the same problem; the phone kept restarting.
Out of the backed up system files, the most important one for me is the contacts. Is there any way I can restore only the contacts. I have the following files in the backup folder pertaining to contacts.
1) com.android.providers.contacts-1.properties
2) com.android.providers.contacts-1.tar.gz
3) com.android.providers.contacts-1.odex.gz
4) com.android.providers.contacts-1.apk.gz
search for contacts.apk in titanium backup app... tap contacts-restore-app and data....
Is there any other way to restore contacts? because this is not working for me. I have installed s5 glamuruos rom on my s3.
I've been trying to restore my chats from my Galaxy Fit with whatsapp version 2.11.175 to my Galaxy S3 Neo with whatsapp version 2.11.238 with no success! I transferred my sd card which contains the whatsapp folder(old). It didn't work. So, I copy/pasted the database & several other folders that weren't there in the new folder (the 2.11.238's folder) from the sd card one and reinstalled the app. This time it asked if I wanted to restore the found backup or not...to which I clicked the restore button...After few seconds, I got an error saying it couldn't restore & continued synchronizing. >_<
Is there a way to restore all the chats? Without rooting?
Please help guys! Thanks in advance!
The whatsapp folder in sdcard only include some audio files and pictures/videos, not your chat history. Since you are non-rooted user, you can try helium (download from playstore). It can be used without root to backup data of your apps (of course this includes your whatsapp account and chat history), but you will need to install a pc client to help you on that. It's very easy to set up, head over to the playstore and give it a try!

YEah i know and I did but I cant find the installation folder................ to overwrite my backup with....
WhatsApp multimedia files and backups are saved on internal SD card. You are unluckily, because after data wipe you have lost them!
Knowing WhatsApp backup path, you should had to manually copy its folder into external SD, or simply do a Titanium Backup of WhatsApp and restore them when CyanogenMod rom were installed.
Dear Simone. Thank you very much for your quick reply. You seem to be very well aware of the possibilities However I mentioned in my first for that
I did a complete folder backup of Whatsapp folder on my SDcard.
Problem now is a that I dont know on which location I can restore this...and make my old chat history visible again as well as my history.

You have to restore it on internal memory, simply by copying the folder from your SD card, and then reinstall Whatsapp.
So you can restore old messages during the wizard, but obviously, you'll lost newer ones, you can't do a merge [emoji6]
I hope I was helpful
before installing a new rom, I recommend using Titanium Backup :good:
What I would do:
1. Look for a good Explorer
2. Uninstall Whatsapp
3. Delete whatsapp files on you Device(NOT ON THE SD CARD!)
4. Copy the Whatsapp file onto your device
5. Reinstall Whatsapp
6. Click restore backup

Exactly, but you'll lost newer messages, as I said you can't merge ones with older [emoji106]

Partially agree... new messages received while you are reinstalling Whatsapp will be restored.
But the new ones already received will be lost and replaced by your old conversations.
I'm very expert about, when I do hard tweaking and get bootloops (a lots until now), WhatsApp restore is the worst things, I've always to lost something with Nandroid restore [emoji14]
I just copy the Whatsapp folder found on the internal SD to my computer. After I do a factory reset with wipe all data on SD, I just copy back the Whatspp folder onto my phones internal SD. While installing Whatsapp, it will find all backup data and restore them. No new messages are lost, everything is just right there.
Sent from my HTC One
New messages will be lost

Sorry if this is too late for the reply. I just joined the forum.
I had this same problem. As rightly mentioned is an earlier post, you just need to copy paste the old folder and restore from that. Your problem of new messages lost will happen if there is a significant time difference between back up and restore. If not I don't think the new messages are lost.
In my case I had backed up whatsapp but was using it on another handset till the time I restored and so lost the new ones (or had the option to restore only one of the two). I havent come across any forum which helps in clubbing the old and new messages into one backup/ restore.
Since last November, Whatsapp on my (rooted) Samsung Galaxy S3 Neo has been giving me problems: backups no longer work, it is impossible to download and upload multimedia. Also, I am experiencing random problems with other apps with file writing. So I would like to reformat the phone as much as possible and install a custom ROM (CyanogenMod being the first candidate).
But first I have to make sure that I can recover my Whatsapp chats, some of which are quite important for me, which is not trivial with backup not working. A bit of googling pointed me to a few people having similar problems; some of them managed to solve their problems fiddling with permissions and ownership on the backup directory, /storage/emulated/0/Whatsapp/Databases; I tried to do the same, but without success - let me just say that this attempt would be the subject for another thread. So I decided to try and simply backup the data directory, /data/data/com.whatsapp, having read that it was possible.
So I backed up the data directory to SD card using good old tar, then I renamed the original and restored the backup; having used tar, both permissions and ownerships were correctly restored (except for the symlink lib -> /data/app-lib/com.whatsapp-3 which was now owned by root rather than by user "install", but having permissions 777 I would be surprised if this was an issue). I also checked that the contents were exactly the same as those of the original directory using diff, and I deleted the app cache before trying to restart Whatsapp: in spite of this, it crashed before starting. I removed the restored directory, renamed the original one to its correct name, and whatsapp started correctly.
I am really confused: how is it possible that an exact copy of a working directory prevents an app from working? The only difference I am aware of in such a copy is in the inode numbers, but nobody would hardcode them in an application... I hope
Any idea, any suggestion is welcome. Did anybody every manage to backup ad restore whatsapp chats from its data directory?
Well, since your phone is rooted, which makes recovery very easy. You just need to find a good app. From my experience, you could apply to Jihosoft Android Phone Recovery. Good luck.

I update my tablet to android 5. Because of the new system. I change file system setting to DocumentProvider. Then it asked me to move the backup files to new location. Few seconds later I can see my App on the list with a line-through. But I am not able to recover them. So I went the the backup folder and see all the files bacame 0kb......
It's happened onece before on my phone and it deleted all my backup files. I thought it was an accident. But it's second time on me!
