Latest Google Maps requires Location Services ON - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else experiencing this? As usual, when I open Maps I get a popup message saying that "To continue let your device turn on location using Google's location service...". In the past I would hit Cancel and I'm good to go. But now the message continues to popup continuously. I can't use Google Maps unless I turn on Location Services.
Uninstalling the update has been my solution so far. Ideas?

Not just me after all, Google Play store reviews for the latest version report the same.

Google Services battery drain

In general this is a well-documented problem, but it hit my DNA only after the most recent OTA. I am surprised no one brought this up here.
If you enable Google Location Services in settings, Google Services will proceed to initiate hundreds of wake locks and turn the GPS on for something like 15 minutes per day, resulting in much downgraded battery life. It will do it regardless of whether you use Google Now or anything else for that matter. Basically it appears Google has decided to keep track of the phone's location on a minute by minute basis as a default option.
The way to turn this off is to disable Google Location Services under Settings - Location and by setting to "off" Google apps location access in Settings - Accounts & Sync - Google - Location Settings. As far as I know this also kills Google Now and your location in Google Maps.
However, to use Google Maps only occasionally, I am not willing to pay the price of a permanently crappy battery life and be subject of so much spying.
If you are rooted there is a way to turn the location services on automatically with Tasker when you run Maps. I am on un-rooted stock, so that doesn't work for me. Another option is to use MapQuest or any other third party maps app.
Any other ideas / suggestions are welcome.

When checking the apps that use up the batttery, look at Google services and the apps that call it. Then go one by one and clear data and cache for each app then reboot.
Google services went from the 2nd most battery draining item (just after screen) to nearly the bottom.

[Q] s3 i9300 battery drain problem due to play services

battery consumed by google play services is almost half of it..i am really not able to understand what to do. i have searched forums regarding this but i did not understand exactly what to do.my phone became sluggish.its rooted stock firmware running 4.3 android.i am new to this.could any one help me out in resolving this issue.also i saw a solution which says update play services.how to update?
Use app called disable services from play store.
And turn off Google services
Press thanx if i helped you in anyway...
This would break google services right? So no more sync gmail and such?
No I m using it for a very long time and it doesn't affect any functionality for Gmail or play store.
Don't know about Google now.
If you use that just check after you disable a particular service.
Don't disable network location and fused location service they are needed for maps to work.

Disabling a critical service can have negative impact. I would recommend Greenify donation package for this since it only hibernates the service and it can start when needed. You will need xposed for Greenify's experimental feature to work

I don't know if this is related but I tried that app to disable services and disabled all the services in google play services.
Gmail and others didn't work, so I enabled them again just like it was before, but now I'm getting a "can't sync contacts" problem in the google account sync panel in preferences...
Seems only contacts is having problems when syncing. Everything else syncs perfectly.
What should I do?
I tried deleting my google account and then adding it again, but no luck.

Unknown issue with Google Play services - Gmail 5.0

Hi all,
I have this weird issue with the new Gmail 5.0 (updated directly from Play Store) and it keeps brining this message up and FC: Unknown issue with Google Play services. All the other Google apps work perfectly fine, it's just the new Gmail and Inbox that don't work.
Deleting the GmsCore.apk and re-installing via Play Store is not an option as it wouldn't let me in the Store then. I am running LegacyXperia CM11 on my Xperia Ray. I should mention that I side-loaded an updated services apk from apkmirror.com, perhaps, someone can upload their Google Play services apk?
Help will be appreciated. :good:
Gee Mail
Just received the update and get the same issue. Now can't use GMail at all.
I have the same issue too.
But I was using the ART, and I can open the gmail app after switched back to dalvik VM.
I will stop using ART in (4.4)m which has many compatibility issue (even with google!) , fallback to dalvik VM and wait until Lollipop.

I'm on stock rom 4.3 so it's not an ART issue.
Do you suffer from space insufficiency?
Are you trying to cure that thing by moving applications that get updated from /data/app to /system/app?
If yes then this might be your problem. Here is what I had.
With latest Google play services update all Google apps (Maps, YouTube, Gmail and Inbox by gmail) were working fine.
Then I needed space so I took the updated Google services apk which took a lot of space in my data partition and moved it to my system partition where its predecessor used to be. I did it completely well using root explorer and checking all tricky parts. I should mention that I study computer engineering and I've been into android more than 5 years so I know my way around.
Immediately after the transfer:
YouTube didn't load anything.
Gmail showed me the same message as you.
Maps force closed.
Inbox by gmail showed me a message of "oops something went wrong please try again later".
It is now my understanding that Google play services has become a very sensitive application that sadly should not be messed with. Especially with a completely redesigned and revamped app such as gmail 5.0 or inbox by gmail. They are just not THAT compatible yet to be able to keep working together after they've been moved around inside partitions.
My suggestion find the latest .zip of "pa gapps" flash it, update the apps that need updating and leave them as they are. They should work like that.
That aint it either

I'm afraid not. This is just an standard install of stock rom no root and certainly not moving files in system areas. All that's happened is I allowed to install the Gmail update then EPIC FAIL.
I have Gmail 5.0 (1569867) and Google Play Services 6.1.88 (1557022-036)
Guys, any update on this? It's getting really annoying to constantly reflash my rom from time to time... Is it possible that Google failed this much?
remove and reinstall the Google play services solved problem.
I've the same issue here but in a very custom rom, thought was my fault
Gee Music
Now after receiving an update of Google Music I now get a permanent notification saying "Unknown issue with Google Play services. Requested by Google Play Music'
So folks what do we do? Uninstall updates? Disable? Will rolling back break the rest of Android?
We have lift off!
Well what do you know? Suddenly my Gmail & Google Play Music now works. Hang on I didn't get any update notifications on these two apps.
Wait a minute, my Google Play Services has been stealthily updated to 6.5.87 (1599771-036)
Thanks Google. Sneaky.
Had the same issue
I had the same issue this two days Gmail wasn't working at all and Hangout was working but for every action i was taking it was giving me the error Unknown issue with Google Play Services and i found out the in my case the problem was Link2SD so what i did was unlinking Google Play Store and Google Play Services than i uninstalled Google Play Services and installed it againn but didn't linked them and error was gone.
The conclusion on my case was linking the app to sd card was causing the error.
Thanks

In may case turns out that I had a version of "google play services" for Android 5.0+ instead of for Android 2.3+.
I did install "google play services" with "System app unistaller" and install the recommended version at gappsandroid.blogspot.com/2015/01/download-google-play-services-apks.html.
Note: In order to uninstall "google play services" "Adndroid devide manager" must be off in System -> Security -> Device administrators. Re-enabled it after install the correct "google play services" version.
Hope that helps

I had the same errror . I've fixed it by 1)reinstaling it from root explorer 2)synced account

Google Apps Issues?

So NewsStand wont connect, it keeps telling me "Couldn't authenticate your account."
And gMail "Unknown issue with Google Play services."
Google+ Seems fine, Drive Seems fine. Even Inbox doesn't seem to have a problem getting to the account.
So very odd.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Erasing everything and setting up as a new device rather than an older profile solved this.
Mine did that too. I found another thread where a poster said it had to do with Play Services.
I uninstalled the Play Services updates, rebooted and I'm good to go now.

Help Install Google Play Services and run Google Apps on Huawei Enjoy 7s

A friend of mine recently sent me a Fig AL10 (Huawei Enjoy 7s) from China and I've been trying to run Google Apps on it but to no avail. Downloaded and installed several Google Play Services from around the internet but nothing seemed right until I apparently downloaded an "Okay" one from ApkMirror. But when I try to run Google Applications (Gmail, Maps, even Duo), they freeze and get booted to the Homescreen. Playstore does not also load (Shows white screen and just continues loading).
Also, if I try to login a Google Account via "Add Account" in settings, it just freezes and does nothing. Anyway to fix this? Thanks.
