Hardware mod a H840 to a H850 or H830? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

Hey Guyz,
Is it possible to just switch the logicboard of the H840 and Upgrade it to a much Faste normal "LG G5" version?

answers please

I saw an article where an LG Nexus 5X was upgraded to 4gb of RAM and another where one was upgraded to 64gb ROM so I'd say anything is possible

LG G5 H840 is kinda like a G5 mini in that it has a lower-end Snapdragon 652 processor and only 3GB memory compared to a *real* G5 that has the Snapdragon 820 and 4GB memory. LTE bands supported are also quite different. Beyond those two really bid differences they lo the same.
You can't change between them a simple hardware mod. You would need to totally replace the motherboard (which should be possible if you have access to the parts and the skills to do it.

Thats what i actually did, ordered one from aliexpress half a year ago for like 40$ 850 one, worked like a charm, till i broke it 2 weeks ago while repairing my homebutton.
So yes guyz, just order a logicboard from aliexpress and you can use it as the "big" one plus you have acces to all the customroms.

plus please quote the processor right.
The 200 series of snapdragon is low end, the 400 series is midrange, the 600 series is higher midrange to high tier and the 800 series is highend. ( obviously all just counts for the series and release dates like a 652 is high tier versus a 830 that is high end or a 425 is midrange vs a 652 witch is high midrange to high tier ).

you need to replace the motherboard. camera and etc. peripherals can stay but the motherboard is what defines the version, memory, storage etc.

[Q] G5 vs the G5 SE

So far I've seen the G5 for sale at around €500 - 550, here and there. What makes less sense is that the Snapdragon 652 (H845) version costs the same in the places I've found it, Mexico, Russia, Chile, etc. I thought it would be priced lower.
Has anyone got the G5 SE, how is the battery time compared to the H850, 860 etc with the Snapdragon 820?
Just curious.

6GB RAM Galaxy Note 7 coming

It looks like a 6GB Note 7 is hitting the market soon. I might wait for that one.

It won't have T-Mobile support with band 12 and Volte. Doubt they would support a overseas/us variant and offer actual T-Mobile customers the 4gb model.

I don't care about T-Mobile. Anyways the point here is why not offer one variant for everybody with 6GB RAM. RAM is cheap and Note would have benefited from extra RAM. We also pay $850+ so that should be enough money for them to give everyone top notch hardware.

I think the gray market it's much faster than that, sure will be available at eBay or Amazon a week later, but won't be cheap, that's it's sure.
I read a comment on some moron about 6gb doesn't impact the performance, seems he never used instagram more than 5 flips.
6gb doesn't make a phone faster but are a safe against ever more memory hungry apps.
I'm disappointed too about the Note 7, I delayed my phone purchase waiting for 6gb+newest SOC, neither arrived just an S7 Edge with few newer tricks non-android std.

I meant they might push the official 6GB RAM release in USA by 1 month. Yeha I am pissed off too that they didn't upgrade the RAM. RAM is cheap actually. Too bad some people are blind and they would buy anything Samsung offers. W.e though. It is what it is I guess.

Exactly note 4 has 3GB ram and I never had problems with ram management. Unless google decides to make some critical changes to android (chances are slim, but hey they're unpredictable) I don't see 4GB of being a problem for next 2 years.
Is not a rumour, it's confirmed and will cost you about 80$ over regular dual sim model.
Originally planned for China, Sammy doesn't discard to include more markets (gray importers on party now)
So is it true that the improved Note 7 with 6GB ram is coming later on or is this just a roumor?

From the reports, I have seen, it is a CHINA Only model, even has Chinese govt bloatware.....
Not out yet — with prior Note versions there's always been reports that Chinese versions are about to come out with — usually — more internal storage, and they never materialized.
So am curious if this one will actually appear…

Guaranteed this will be launched by Samsung in a few months as the Galaxy Note 7 Pro. Look what it's already done with the Galaxy A9 Pro. Seriously it's basically a given. Heck, here in Japan the company even re-launched the Galaxy S3 back in the day with the enhanced specs that were in the Korea model at the time.

Really? Your pissed off because the RAM wasn't upgraded? I was hoping for more RAM, but I've never had an issue with memory. You can easily manage with 4gb. If you're so disillusioned stay on the OnePlus. No one asked you to join the party, and the OnePlus line of phones has always been a great bargain alternative.
I'm a recent fan of Samsung mainly because of the Note line of phones. Stylus is now a requirement for me as I really missed it in the two weeks I was on the s7 edge.

I'm not that optimistic — supposedly the 6GB SM-N9000 was rumored to appear in China as of next Thursday — September 1ˢᵗ… So far no advance word — historically with Samsung this has meant the advance “rumors” don't materialize…

I can't imagine why you would actually need 6gb ram unless you have 30 apps open all the time. Still, I think samsung charge enough (!) For the ordinary version to include the extra ram and storage.

Model number of G5 SE?

Hey!
I am currently thinking about getting either the G5 SE or the A5 2016. The decision mainly depends on the possibility to root the phone.
So I went to the store today, there it said the G5 SE had a quadcore processor and the one I tried had the model number H850, which would be nice because as I'd be able to root it.
Sadly, they didn't have it in stock so I now wanted to order it online at my carrier's homepage, where I can't see the model number. There it now also says the phone has an octacore processor, that's what I also thought because it says so everywhere in the internet. I know have concerns that I would get the H840, so I haven't ordered it yet.
Could you please tell me which model number the G5 SE with the octacore has?
Also, how high are the chances there will come an availability to root the H840?

G5 SE with Snapdragon 652 and 3GB of RAM (LPDDR3) is the H840
G5 with Snapdragon 820 and 4GB of RAM (LPPDR4) is the H850.
Actually only two models othe the G5 have root: H850 (only Europeans) and H830 (T-Mobile)
Who knows, you have to wait LG officially add the H840 to the official bootloader unlock program or maybe some devs that find an exploit to obtain root, looking to the past the possibilies that this happens are very low.
So, if you want root you have to buy the European H850 or the T-Mobile H30, other models actually have no root and probably won't receive it.
Thank you very much, then I'll probably go with the A5.

Dual Sim?

I've been looking at a few spec lists and a few have listed a dual SIM option but can't confirm. Will the version available in the US have dual-SIM?
Small feature but really convenient when traveling abroad.

None of the U.S. carriers that I know of will be selling a dual-SIM variant. If you want that you will probably have to order online from another country. And only two models will have the official LG bootloader unlock, that's the "unlocked carrier" U.S. and European models. So, you will probably give forgo that bootloader unlock option if you get dual SIM variant.
According to the page below, there's a european model with Dual SIM. Not sure if it will be unlocked though (unsure if all european models will be):

V30 H930 will be the European carrier unlocked model, as far as I know. Any letters after the "H930" mean a country or carrier variant, not the "carrier unlocked".
Id be interested to know if it is Dual Sim + Dedicated SD card, or is another very annoying Hybrid sim system. (GSM Arena seems to say its a dedicated SD but no review i have read so far mention this).
Happy to look to the India/SE Asia models if they are offering such a spec?
Spoke to carphone warehouse today, who are exclusive provider in UK. The rep said they will have the h930 variety, which will be unlocked for all carriers either on contract or sim free. He said that h930 version doesn't have dual sim. Judging by that tech walls post only the 128gb plus variety will have a dual sim h930ds.
Shame I really wanted a dual sim phone that isnt a Samsung or op5

The closest option to the V30 with dual-SIM, I would say is the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. It isn't IP68, doesn't have a quad-DAC, but it does have more RAM, is dual-SIM, and is about the same size. The screen on the Mi Mix 2 though is full HD instead of QHD though but that will mean longer battery life for the Mi Mix 2 each day.

Close as in, similar size, but both have their positives and negatives. Better battery life with a lower resolution and vice versa. There is nothing wrong with a 1080 X 2160 screen on a 6" screen phone when using a decent screen.

It's about the same size. As are a lot of phones. That's the only similarity.
QHD (1440p) vs 1080p is a HUGE difference to have a premium (top tier) phone. I've had QHD since 2014 with my 5.2" 1440p AMOLED Moto XT1225, and I've had Qi wireless charging since 2013 (with LG Nexus 5 and then the Moto XT1225). I'm NEVER downgrading specs, I'm going to keep the same or upgrade. If a phone doesn't have at least 1440p (especially on a 6" display) or Qi wireless charging I'm not buying it.
Since 2014, all major OEMs (Samsung, LG, Motorola, Sony, HTC) have gone to 1440p (or higher with Sony) for their flagship phones. Even ZTE with the excellent ZTE Axon 7 last year had 1440p AMOLED. If you can't go past 1080p, I don't consider you a major manufacturer. That's why I say OnePlus is a pretender.
As for battery, OEMs just need to put in a BIGGER battery. My 5.2" 1440p Moto XT1225 has a 3900 mAh battery. There's no limit on battery size they can put into a phone. Especially spread out over a 6" frame! So what if it's 1mm thicker! No one is begging for credit card thin phones anyway.

Although I am not 100% sure, I think Xiaomi does have 1440p screens in some of their phones. I am glad you mentioned ZTE's Axon 7 though. That is a perfect example of a 1440p screen phone where the rest of the hardware and software was an absolute disaster. Speaker issues, charging port issues, and many software issues, just to mention a few. Thankfully they went with physical buttons under the screen that ensured I wouldn't buy it. I would have been so mad if I had wasted my money buying two of them!
My last three phones are the Nexus 6P, Nexus 6, and Nexus 5. I have not used a 1080p screen on a newer phone but I wouldn't think there is a massive difference on panel sizes so small. I guess seeing is believing though.

So, for example, my G4 had dual sim + a dedicated SD slot. so i can have 2 sims and my SD card all working at the same time.
Manufacturers these days (for some reason I cant understand) have decided to make it a 'one or the other' scenario. The Dual sim/SD card uses the same tray, so you can only have one of either dual sim, OR 1 sim + 1 SD. this is known as a hybrid sim system. I hate it.

I don't believe any of them officially support all three. Even the ZTE Axon 7 didn't officially support all three but it did work. Removing the SIM from the plastic shell without damaging it and sticking it to the MicroSD card looks easier than it is.

There are tutorials on YouTube showing how to do it. Melting the glue holding the SIM to the plastic without cooking it as well as not bending the SIM too much while removing it are the parts I would say isn't easy. If you are going to try though, I would suggest having a few SIM's on hand just in case one or two get damaged.

The Mi Note Pro from way back in 2015 had a QHD display. It just seems the ones that do have a QHD display don't really catch my interest because they are basically clones of phones I wouldn't buy anyway.
Still no sign of the dual sim version? Anyone have any info on expected release date?

Who's getting the V30?

So I've been happy with this phone but the V30 is everything this phone should have been.
I'm hoping with T-Mobile we won't run into a similar issue where it's locked and can't be rooted. Still getting it either way though
I'm considering it. But, I'm waiting to hear some thoughts as to whether people think the upgrade is worth it.

No 6GB of ram, and no bigger battery, I'm quite disappointed.
4GB are absolute ok. 6GB is nonsens. And for what a bigger akku? The OLED Panel is much more less in akku drainage, the actual snapdragon is that too. So.....no Problem
LG V30 slightly wider and taller, but not much.
Lighter. This I don't like.
Larger screen but same resolution. G6 has higher pixel density.
64GB vs 32 GB internal storage.
Snapdragon 835 vs 821.
A bad implementation on the 835 will be slower than the 821.
The SD821 Specs with Antutu at about 155K and I see that number sometimes. Most of the time on the 140K range.
The SD835 tops out at about 177K. I had the Essential PH-1 that would rarely see numbers I get with the LG G6.
That's about a $13% difference overall. The largest gain seems to be in the GPU and that is about 30%. The other score are close.
So you aren't going to see a speed difference. You probably won't see any real difference even in games.
If the upgrade of the V30 worth the difference in price from a G6?
If you don't already have a G6 maybe. If you have a G6, then absolutely not.
The price of an unlocked US997 G6 is $479 from B&H.
The price of a V30 has a price of $840 from Verizon.
I don't think it's worth the extra coin. For the extra $360 you are getting a marginally faster processor.
Is it worth it? Only you can decide.
Me? I sent my Essential Ph-1 back and bought the LG G6 a few weeks ago.
I don't think I'm missing anything over the V30. I have $360 extra in my pocket.

I've the opportunity to spend 500 euros to change my G6 and i would like to have an upgrade, like more ram, or more battery, just my opinion tough.
Let's see reviews and if the price will drop like the G series...
For me, never again a LG phone, even a V30. Here in Canada (videotron) we are stuck on July security patch for the G6, so our phone is vulnerable to hacker (blueborne). I prefer a Google phone ant I will get the the Pixel 2 XL to have a real upgrade.
I will probably wait till v40. I love V series media features. And also G6 is all I need for now
I don't want V30 at all, I think it is not worth upgrading, but I am afraid LG will be now slow with updates as they have new flagship :-/
No more LG devices for me until they finally figure out how to keep them updated. Being on the July update of a flagship device in October is unacceptable.

So I've been happy with this phone but the V30 is everything this phone should have been.
I'm hoping with T-Mobile we won't run into a similar issue where it's locked and can't be rooted. Still getting it either way though

So far it looks like it's locked for everyone and not on the LG dev site yet

Here in Italy are stuck to July patch, European should be on August but some people are still stuck to July...
Still on July patch in the UK, not really bothered about patches tbh i want bug fixes & improvements.
July patch for unlocked US997.
When was the G6 released, in January or February 2017? And you're seriously considering to buy the next phone only after few months?
So are you still surprised, why LG stops providing updates of android regularly when people are willing to pay money every few months?
I mean, seriously?
September 1st patch, in EU on o2 .
But I have the unlocked H870DS (International ver. of TWN).
