So I got given a lenovo tab the other day, i'm completely new to tablets and android software but it didn't take me long to fill up the native storage and this is where the program loophole began.
I had a few micro 32gb sdcards sitting around, so I did a speed check on them and put in the fastest one in the lenovo tab, after installing a good few programs which states they move programs to sdcards, which they do to a degree but nothing was better than the already built in move app to sdcard. I then found out about that to be able to take advantage of the sdcard fully, you need a rooted device.
This is where I found kingroot, which I then installed and started to use, after finishing up installing the standard health programs (antivirus, malware scanners etc), which flagged kinguser. After doing a bit of research about this program, I decided that I didn't feel safe using it, so I was looking around for alternatives.
I then found out, the program didn't like to be uninstalled so I started to use supersume pro, which did a good job removing kingroot but it didn't install super su as stated.
I am now in the process off trying to install twrp (which is proving to be more difficult than any other stage of this process), so i can then install super su, so i can use folder mount (this turned out to be the best program of them all imo), which in turn will allow me to use my sdcard.
This is where I am stuck, I have installed the drivers to pc, installed minimal adb and fastboot, also I have installed android studio. I have been able to use fastboot from the pc to send commands too the tablet but the bit that's confusing me is, how to tell the fastboot tablet to pull the twrp file from the sdcard ?
Or is there a vast simpler way of doing what I am trying to do, in the safest possible way.
tldr: What is the 'safest' way to root my tab for a newbie so i can use the sdcard fully at my discretion without being sent into a program loophole. Apologies for any bad grammar, it was never my strong point.
Nevermind, I managed to do it after 5 painstakingly days with hardly any sleep to rectify this issue, although I nearly bricked it in the process by installing the wrong twrp file but thankfully with all the info on this website, I have managed to undo all the problems and re root successfully and 'safely' using twrp and supersu zip as guided in another topic on this forum. So thanks to all developers and users, my tablet is now spyware and adware free for the most part.

Hello... I do not know of your experience with android devices... But it probably will not help looking for "rooted roms"
Try googling "tb3-710f custom rom" or "tb3-710f stock rom" or "tb3-710f firmware".
If you are successful in finding firmware/rom then look for a guide to root. I myself have some experience, I will also see if I can assist you with more information through pm' s.

I did not go through the whole thread though to see if the process is explained.

That is great advice, once you know for a fact you have the original firmware for you're device and learn how to use adb or fastboot, then you can start to play around a bit with some of the software. I probably went through about 50 websites absorbing as much info as I can and the rest comes with trial and error with a big fear off bricking the device and the only thing you can do to really brick it, is by corrupting the data to a point of not turning on, which is why I was learning on a cheap tab like the tb3, which is a great tab for the price.
In the end for me it was just a case off installing twrp, theres 3 variants here https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=80021 so massive props to Tzul, which then allowed me install supersu zip to root the device, how safe supersu is, I have no idea yet but so far its way safer than kinguser or one click root from what I have read.
Well now I am stuck and need professional advice, Last night, I don't remember what I was trying to do but in twrp I selected wipe davlik cache and wipe data (without knowing what it fully does, like a true noob mistake), this process took so long I fell asleep. I woke up this morning and the device was hanging on the boot screen. I did manage to take the battery out and reboot back into twrp mode which is enabling me to go back into the twrp menu and also fastboot if needed. So what can I do from here to reboot back into normal or do i need to flash the firmware ?. I don't mind losing all my data and starting from scratch but would be better if i didn't need to do that ofc, so any advice or help would be most welcome lol.

Ooops... Anyway...
Did you at any point allow TWRP to make modifications to the system?? I found that when I did that on my device it totally destroyed partition structures and went into infinite boot loops.
Also while i was trying to fix any issues (pretty much like you right now though TWRP) I noticed that when I tried to flash either supersu or twrp again or something else, I was getting a ton of red system messages not being able to mount partitions.
If that is your case, unfortunately, you might need to re-flash...

After applying these steps, both superuser and TWRP have had no issues with anything!!! (fingers crossed, until today that is... )

Thanks I wish I saw you're thread before, it would have saved me a lot of time early on but, oh boy what a day I have had with this device today, I am not sure what I did to fix it but i basically did the same steps again to wipe the cache and clear the data within twrp then rebooted. What I didn't realize was in the process of disconnecting the battery, the case snapped off part of the sdcard (so to all noobs like me, MAKE SURE TO TAKE SDCARD OUT BEFORE TAKING CASE OFF) which in turn caused a short somewhere, the device started to get really warm and twrp was showing the cpu getting to 53c, I quickly dc the battery again and pulled the sdcard, I went and got a replacement card
After a succesful reboot, the device booted up as normal so a big phew there, now a lot of the apps/games that was previously installed and linked to the sdcard are having some difficulty re downloading and installing with a few errors, some have been succesful but now i'm wondering if a full wipe will be in order here ? as the internal storage is still showing only 1gb free but I also want to keep twrp and supersu.
The original thought process was using the least amount of internal storage as possible since I have a hi speed 64gb sdcard and some games apps was still taking up a lot off the 8gb internal space, as some didn't like a full link via apps2sd with the internal data but with the ones that was succesfull didn't have any noticable slow load times. I would like to keep the dalvik cache of all programs on the internal storage if this helps with speed ? or does that not matter.

Out of the 8 Gigs, how much space does the whole system occupy? Did you try to remove bloatware? Did you use any similar app to root uninstaller to get rid of unwanted/ unused apps?
To my limited understanding it would require some extended knowledge in programming to re-assign partitions (ie cache) or making other than default partitions actually become the default partitions for any purpose.
Anyway... I can understand how 8Gigs internal storage can be limited... You can try:
1. Since you have custom recovery installed, 1st and most essential step is to make full backup of EVERYTHING! Just enter TWRP hit backup and choose EVERYTHING in the options of what to backup. This will most probably not destroy the communication between external SD and system (in regards to installed apps) the next time you might need a recovery (as long as you will not make changes to the SD card in the meanwhile).
Make the backup file to an external SD. I personally use a 16GB micro SD only for backing up purposes!!!
2. After you have everything in backup, install a program similar to root essentials or root uninstaller and try to get rid of anything you do not use. This might give the system some space to "breathe"...
Let me know. I got rid of a whole bunch of stuff out of my tb3-850f tablet and the system now 'rocks' (not to mention the extended battery life...)
You can even uninstall default apps like any default system picture viewer (that consumes space in your system) and install QuickPic from the/and to the SD card. Same with video player. Uninstall system video player and install something in the likes of MX Player from/and to the ext. SD. You can make a whole bunch of tweaks and uninstalling depending on your needs. I have even uninstalled most of Lenovo related apps.
Let me know how it goes. For some reason I think you are quite experienced and perhaps you knew all these already!?! Anyhow, let me know if I can be of more help.
This whole website has been a great help and helped me learn the process again, I do have extensive knowledge in hardware and overclocking, I'm just not so good with code, html is best i can do lol. Back in the day (almost 20 years), I dabbled a bit in unbricking (bricking) and flashing old phones, the process is fairly similar, it's just a few more programs but getting the right programs and the 'right firmware' is key here.
That's a good idea to get another sd card to save backups on and root essentials sounds like a worthy program to download. As with partition sizes and what data is stored where, is still a learning process for me atm, theres so much clutter aka bloatware, i'm not sure which is safe to uninstall, I will do a thread search to see.
I may start a new thread for this as this topic is solved now but I am also looking to get a rom or app so I can start to fine tweak the power and cpu/gpu usage but so far nothing I have noticed for the tb3 ***
If any mods come across this thread can turn it to solved, pls thanks I can't edit the header.

If one enables full device encryption in Ice Cream Sandwich, am I correct in assuming that that the internal SD of that device is now not going to be available in the CWM recovery mode? And even if it was, the root fs would not be available? If so, this pretty much would make CWM flashing your device near impossible?

I got a Gnex today from Verizon in the US and I encrypted my phone after I unlocked the bootloader but before rooting. As a result I don't think I will be able to root because it doesn't seem that the modified boot.img that the instructions tell me to use can mount the encrypted system (it sat at the Google logo w/ the unlocked icon for 10 minutes before I pulled the battery and let it boot the stock boot.img) which came up fine.
It seems the only way to decrypt the phone is by doing a factory reset.
That's all I know. That being said, while a custom recovery may work for wiping partitions (such as cache), it would probably be mostly useless until the custom recovery is updated to support the encrypted file systems. I'm a *NIX user and an engineer, but don't have a lot of experience with Android's internals, so take all that with the appropriate sized grain of salt.

Anyone experimented with full device encryption / ROM flashing / SD Card? I'm curious about this as well, but not curious enough to experiment.
I dident try it myself, so i dont exactly know, how this works. But i think device encryption shouldent completly block clockworkmod recovery.
I think it could be a problem to make a backup while your device is encrypted. But i think it shouldent be a problem to recover a old system over an encrypted one. Encryption keeps people without the key away from reading data. This dosent mean you cant wright something over it and replace the locked data with some new one. But then you defenitly loose the old data. I dont think you can flash a new ROM or a recovery without a full wipe. You probably gona loose all the data you had on the old system.
But i general i think this is anyway a good think to do when you flash a new ROM.
I think you could give it a try, without briking your phone. But i dident try it, so i cant take any responsibility.

I sonst exactly know hat diagnostic Mode you mean. Depends hat Diagnose you want to run. Do you want to read the logfiles in your phone, wher you can see what ist doing? You could use the app alogcat. An other way would be to run logcat over Eclipse.

I need to edit modem information and enable a diag port for QPST, essentially allowing me to flash it to another carrier.

I encrypted mine after flashing the stock ICS 4.0.3 image and rooting. CWM still loads, but when I try to use USB mass storage, windows tells me it needs to be formatted before the SD card can be used.
You can use titanium backup to make backups of your stuff, and restore them to a non-encrypted phone. I have found no other way to unencrypt the phone than factory reset either. When you encrypt, then go to settings > security > encryption, it just has a greyed out area saying "Phone is encrypted", which is stupid and needs to be fixed.

I have been playing with ICS + FDE for several days doing different things. First off this is:
Nexus S 4G, running Pete's crespo4g OTA ROM
I flashed with CWM which is still on there and runs fine.
However: /data and /sdcard and /system (?) are encrypted and CANNOT be mounted.
To restore you have to 1) make a full backup over USB to a PC of the whole SDcard (or at least the important folders).
2) wipe and reformat everything. This isn't just a factory reset, this kills the sdcard as well.
3) mount (hopefully) the newly reformatted /sdcard and blow your backup from the PC onto the /sdcard
4) use CWM to restore a previous ROM.
That's pretty much it, give or take. Not for the faint of heart. However, if you are concerned enough to want encryption, you don't want to just say reboot recovery and voila all your files are belong to us, right?

Also, the backup to PC part is just your sdcard. It doesn't back up the whole system. There might be a way to do that via adb, I don't know.
So i am running rooted runnig miui.us rom. I just tried to encrypt phone.. It ran for 2 and a half hours and I got impatient. thinking maybe i shouldnt have done it... Then after a little bit of panic i said **** it if i lose data i lose data... so i powered off and back on hoping i didnt and the rom booted back up with all my data intact..... •••••• Wish I had more to report but im not doing that again until someone can confirm that it works fine...... I have tried booting into cwm yet.. If i have an issue when i need to boot illl report back but if you dont hear from me here then assume I was able too.

IT does indeed take a fairly long time to encrypt. If I understand correctly it will build the encrypted partition on a loopback (or something like) before erasing the original (by overwriting?).
I've got more to report. I followed my plan (couple posts back) for unencrypting and reflashing my phone. (Nexus S 4g).
The first bits of this worked fine. I was able to flash CM9 onto my phone (works like a champ btw). While the phone was in recovery I mounted the SD and copied my backup back onto it.
However...
When CM9 booted I STILL got the "unlock your device" screen, still the same password, and it decrypted and booted. That was surprising, but not as much as when I looked for the SD card, it said it was incorrectly formatted! The only thing to do was reformat and copy with the phone on and unlocked.
So lessons learned: 1) a factory reset from _inside_the_ROM_ doesn't remove the encrypted partition at all and
2) As far as I can tell, the SD card _is_ encrypted along with /data
I'd be very interested to hear other's experiences, especially someone who can remove their SD storage.
Undoing FDE
First off - Lacking a device with removable storage to test with all I can tell you is that the sdcard is not accessible by any normal means after FDE is enabled without booting into the encrypted system.
"Removing" FDE required three steps beyond normal:
-Factory reset from within the ROM
-factory reset/wipe at recovery and/or format /data
-once into a running ROM, reformat the sdcard
Once all that is done (in addition to normal setup for ROM) you should be able to operate normally again.

I repetead these steps for 3 times but the same result...the password does not match!!! ?

I want to get some of the data that is stored in the phones memory. i use windows 7 x64.
also if anyone has experience with getting a phone replaced/repaired by an insurance company, do you know if they care about a phone being rooted and having a custom rom on it?
they will only be repairing the screen, nothing else. If they will care, I would want to flash the rom back to stock, and unroot just case. is this possible without a screen?

If you haven't installed the phone driver's install it using Samsung Kies and when you connect the phone it will automatically connect in mtp mode(if you enabled usb debugging you will get it connected as a flash drive) in both cases the phone memory and sd card will be mounted and you can retrieve your data.
Yes you will definitely need to flash a stock rom (or they will make you pay for it) since you can do it via Odin and download mode, you can pretty much do it safely without the screen but be sure to perform a factory reset and the required wipes beforehand to avoid bootloops(no idea how to do it without the screen you might have to guess your way through this).

I am sure if you search around you will get picture posts here but I recommend you Google how to install a rom using CWM (be sure of your version) and several videos from YouTube will surely pop up follow their pattern of using CWM it will be more assuring to follow.

CWM is integrated with the kernel
you can't access its information from the internal memory or the sd card which you can access from your computer, you better flash a kernel containing CWM (version known ) and then try to wipe and flash it, and it will mostly be 5.5.0.4 if it was a recent kernel, but better be safe than sorry.
Also if you know what version kernel you installed you can check the developer page for CWM information or ask there for the version.

hey man i had siyah kernel with paranoid android! i honestly cant remember what version though.
I tried getting my phone into download mode, but ODIN didnt detect anything. I think im just going to take a shot and send it off to the insurance company and see what happens.
they should only be fixing the screen and nothing else, so hopefully they wont care about the custom rom
If you don't see anything, well you could use the windows media center, I don't use Win 7,
but I know that it existed before.
Alternatively, you could use "adb" (from android sdk) for use when your phone is plugged on usb,
using simple command lines you will be able to go through your filesystem and
copy what you need using the "pull" command (explained under the adb interface).
And indeed, it works better with a rooted phone.

I tried the non-mandatory firmware update from T-mobile and it wrecked the functionality of my phone. I tried to go back with a couple new Rom versions and think I more or less ended up with three roms installed on my internal storage which has given me basically no space which was never an issue for me before. I have used a disk viewer to verify there is unmounted data that is taking up space but I can't figure out how to get to it through the phone or my pc to delete it. I assume if I do this that the empty space will be absorbed and fix the internal storage issue.

The course of action I would recommend at this point is using a tool called Odin to re-flash the stock ROM to your phone. I would recommend taking a look at this guide for the step-by-step procedure on how to do this. Let me know if you still have questions .

Hey! Big thanks for the reply. Here come the questions...
I used Odin to put the other OS versions on the phone so I am familiar with the software though its been several months. I also still have the ROM that I flashed to phone. I am curious though that if it didn't wipe the previous partitions last time, what would keep it from doing the same thing this time and really messing me up? Or did I click or not click something in Odin or use the wrong option and doing it differently this time would fix the problem?

Using Odin to re-flash the stock ROM will automatically setup the right configuration for. Do Not delete the files in /dev/block these are critical to the phones operation and part of the phones normal partitioning and operation as previously stated deleting these will cause a lot of problems if you delete them. If you really want to free up some internal storage space I would recommend deleting the carrier pre-installed bloatware, before you delete any bloatware makesure to backup the apps you deleted with Titanium Backup or a similar backup or flash Clockworkmod Recovery or Team Win Recovery Project and make a Nandroid Backup which is a complete backup of your phone. And don't worry about being gun shy we are all beginners at some point the only real way to become an expert if practice, practice, practice .
So I am working on the Heimdall One-Click.

I was trying to compile loki with my aboot.img and boot.img, but it says "supportive device".
Is there a way we can get this device supportive? I don't know to much about finding the check_sigs and hdr. I have attached the aboot.img and boot.img if anyone is willing to help thanks!

I would totally donate to anyone who took the time to figure this phone out. When I went to the T-Mobile store, I was looking for the L9, which appears to have a strong modding community behind it, but they didn't have it in-store and I was in a pinch, so here I sit with a completely stock experience in my pocket. Not the worst stock experience, surely, but still stock.

Playfulgod has been working on native cwm for this, but I found that the f3 2nd init recovery works. Check my thread in atr

lg f6 help...Please help save a guy from bricking!
So I apologize if Im posting in the wrong spot but I noticed yall are still working on the F6...so I figured this made sense...
I thought I knew exactly what I wasdoing but did not....I was lucky enough to find patience enough to read up before flashing...I see the threads posted on how to root, backup, and restore this phone...but all those threads explain it using so0ftware other than I have... Since I made some moves before truly knowing what I was doing...I'd like to just stick wiith what i got for the moment and see if yall, as the experts can guide me down the runway...
Heres What I have so far:
1. I DO have root access
2. I DO have SuperSU and it seems to be working in the sense that it keeps logs...but sometimes it gives me a binary error. (I have NOT et converted SuperSU into a system app...bc im unclear if its necessary after reading a few different threads)
3. I DO have Root Browser' which I use to shuffle things around. (I DO have the /system and /data folders relocated on my external SD)
4. I DO have Titanium Backup which I used to BU my USER APPS/SYSTEM DATA.
5. I DO have Flashify which I also used to BU my STOCK RECOVERY/KERNEL (I cant seem to figure out where that recovery is being default stored though...Ive been searching high and low.
NOTE: Although im happy I have made it this far...I dont wanna go any further until I know exactly what im doing. I fear that I have missed something small. Something that would be a no brainer to you experts.
I'm unclear of storage requirements...I BELIEVE that I must store all my rooted tools on the external bc the goal is to wipe everything NOT on ext SD.
What I THINK I know is that hypothetically since im backed up...or when im 100% certain everything is....I can just click REBOOT TO RECOVERY MODE under the menu using Titanium.
IF I happen to be correct up to that point....I think my next move is using Titanium to put back the things ive stored on my SD.
In my mind that leaves me with the same ROM...but without the fluff...and now the ability to save to ext SD.....
If I underestand right....currently there are no MOD upgrades available due to difficulty of unlocking the bootlag....or something that sounds likethat...
I have ZERO experience with any of this....I hope what I just shared is at least in the ballpark of the right direction..

I agree with MadeFree, that the recovery file should be found in the 'Clockwork Mod' folder, under External SD, when using File Manager. When in recovery mode it should automatically bring up your Rom-backup when you click on Recover from External / (creation date) file name / yes to confirm.
Also, I use the F6 and I have bricked it multiple times while trying to figure out what i can actually do on it, as it only currently has a custom recovery made for it. I have been trying to figure out myself how to recover all the apps, files, pics, videos, etc. when i have to flash to STOCK Rom during brick. Currently, my solution for this was not found in the 'nano-droid backup' (i have been led to believe it could be recovered in RECOVERY MODE) but rather in an app called ROM toolbox from Google store. This does so much more than Titanium Backup does but i still use titanium for backing up a single application if needed. Rom toolbox can also save a copy of the Kernel as well as monitor your apps, make CPU tweaks, make backups using Google drive and much more. But the easiest way I have found for me may be different for you. Currently, my only reliable solution for recovering my data is using ZIP ME, (downloaded from the ROM toolbox app) as well as backing everything up using Google drive. The zip files are nice when not near my computer though. All i have to do after booting up the 'factory reset' is open file manager and look for my zips.
do not be afraid to soft brick (looping, freezes, crashes) when all you have to do is factory reset your phone using key combo or use the firmware followed in from the link provided by Madefree, down below.

There is another app that ya all could try, but its FREE and works.Back Up Your Mobile. Go figure huh?
It stores on internal, but I copied to external_sd and that is where my backup is located.

This is the first time I've tried installing a custom ROM on my VZW S4 (i545) (MDK firmware. Yes, I held out on the OTA since May). I've got a few thoughts and a couple of questions I was hoping could be addressed. I consider myself familiar with flashing ROM's and whatnot, so I won't need hand-holding steps in answer to my questions.
Some info:
VZW S4
MDK Firmware
Recovery: OUDhs CWM Touch Req0very v1.0.3.5
I haven't taken any OTA since I got the phone back in May. This leads me to believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that I'm on Android 4.2.2?
Current ROM: AOKP Nightly Build for 10/31/2013 (MR2)
Thoughts: Holy hell, this ROM is BLAZING fast. I am missing a few features, but none I use regularly (I don't use any of the TouchWiz "smart" features. Damn battery hogs). I was able to flash this over and install GAPPS without any problems. Loading time is incredible, and I love how clean the interface is.
Questions:
Can anyone help me figure out why I cannot install CM10.2? Not sure if that's because I downloaded the wrong version or something, but after flashing it, the screen stays stuck at the Galaxy S4 logo and doesn't move. Maybe I didn't wait long enough, but it surely didn't move in any reasonably expected time (AOKP, by comparison, loaded probably <1 minute). Any thoughts on why this might be? I really want to try CM10.2, so perhaps I should try a different build?
Another question/concern: I downloaded a few different ROMs last night -- CM10.2, AOKP and st0ckdr0id. AOKP installed fine, CM10.2 froze up, but when I installed st0ckdr0id (after wiping out, of course), I got what I think is referred to as a kernel panic. The message was similar to "This phone has software installed on it that Verizon Wireless has determined to be unsafe. Please power off the phone and take to the nearest Verizon Wireless store for help". In the top-left corner, it had in bold RED letters "Kernel secure: FAIL" (or similar wording). I fixed this by booting back into recovery, wiping out, and then installing AOKP again. Can anyone help me understand why this happened?
Why is only ~10GB of space still available when I -thought- I wiped out everything?
What I'm really searching for is an AOSP ROM that is very clean and light, but has SOME of the TouchWiz features. Any recommendations?
My phone only shows me as having a 3G connection, where normally I have 4G LTE. Anything I can do to fix this? Is this an issue with the ROM not detecting the right kind of radio? Bug report, perhaps?
I can't mount my external_sd in my CWM anymore. Yes, I used to be able to do it at one point, because I've done an external nandroid backup to it from within CWM in the past (as of October 29th, if the date on the backups is correct). I've read in other Google searches that it has something to do with the formatting of the SD card, but I haven't removed that SD card from my phone in a few months to have adjusted anything to do with formatting. I plugged the memory card into my Linux laptop this morning while diagnosing this and got an error about an unknown exfat partition. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Stupid question: Is there a way to -completely- wipe my internal SD card clean of all my current files? I know when I "wipe" /data I can still see all of my files from the previous installation, and I'm not ballsy enough to wipe /sdcard. I guess the question that then coincides with this is if I were able to completely wipe the phone, I assume that would wipe the recovery as well?
Sorry for some of the novice questions -- I have no problem messing with my old TF300T tablet (because NVFlash will save the day), but this is my only phone, only line of communication and SOLE way for me to answer calls for work (24/7 rotating on-call), so it is VERY important to me to ask questions and not go down for more than 1 hour.

Wow that's a lot. Let's see if we can get you answers.
1. Switch recoveries to twrp 2.5.0.2. I can't stress the importance of the particular version enough. There are others. This is absolutely the most stable. It's what the devs use. I think then your cm issue will be resolved.
Correct way to wipe with twrp.
1.wipe - >factory reset.
2. Advanced wipe - >check system, data, davlik, cache then wipe.
3. The go back to main screen and install rom.
2. Answered by answer one. Lots of people have lots of opinions about the various recoveries. All I can tell you is this is what all the devs use for their recovery. Can't argue with that.
3. Reserved space. It might say you have 16 gigs but a good size chunk is taking merely by formatting. Then the ROM and programs you have installed of course.

Thanks for your response Mightycaptain! I used CWM as my first ever recovery and am kinda pressed on it, which is why I use it, but I have no issues going to TWRP if that means fixing my issues. Can you elaborate on how to install TWRP in place of my current CWM? I'll do some Googling in the meantime to try to find the answer myself. (I haven't done any flashing or rooting stuff since I got the phone in May!!)

My reason for wanting to wipe the entire internal SD card is there are still files, folders, logs and backups from when I had my previous ROM. I'm having issues restoring my nandroid backup from the night of the 7th so is it at all possible for me to salvage some of my settings, apps and file backups from those existing files? Once I fix my nandroid, I'm going to keep the nandroid backup in a safe place and I ideally want to have a completely clean phone to start from: That means getting rid of all those old files and other nonsense from before. Is this a possibility?
I'm going to spend my time today trying to extract data from my nandroid backups using ROM Toolbox Pro. If that doesn't work, I have a nandroid backup from the 31st that has 99% of the stuff I need so I'll try to restore that. If THAT doesn't work, then I'm going to cry myself to sleep while trying to remember all of my contacts
Wish me luck, and hopefully I can get some answers to my last few questions!

You can flash it in your current recovery. It overwrites CWM. I would make sure you have a flashable for CWM just in case you need to go back for some reason. Also the backups between those 2 recoveries are not compatible. But I would nandroid with CWM before flashing twrp. I would also change were you recovery is pointing to for storage to the external SD if you haven't already. After you have cut your current backup and past it there. You can use rom toolbox pro to back up your contacts and restore it once you flash a new ROM.
Now as good advice going forward I would add your contacts to your Google account. That way when you flash new stuff or drop your phone in the toilet as soon as you add your Google account to the phone all those contacts will automatically download. But it is always a good idea to use tibu or rom toolbox pro to back up all your apps and seeing and use that after flashing roms to restore apps and settings.
But honestly I'd nandroid, move my contacts to Google, make app backups. Flash twrp. Then start flashing roms. You could be doing it in an hour. After you flash twrp make another nandroid so you have a twrp compatible backup. Then in a day or so of you are happy with everything delete the CWM backups for space.
Edit: as to extracting things from your current nandroid. Not sure if that is possible for one thing it is compressed not sure how that would work unless you are doing a full restore.
Also for future reference with TWRP. When restoring nandroid wipe like your flashing a new rom before restoring.

Hey thanks again for your quick response!! I'm glad I checked this first, because I'm in my ROM Toolbox app atm and it has an option to let me install TWRP 2.5.0.2 from within the app itself. Should I do it this way?
I will be adding all contacts to Google from now on. Unfortunately I saved all my stuff to my Verizon backup assistant so I just need one last shot at my phone to save all those contacts (manually, if I must) and be able to enter them onto the new ROM.
By "flash it in your current recovery" I assume you mean download the .zip, place it on my internal /sdcard, and then "flash" it just like I would flash a ROM, right?

I can't afford to lose this phone so I'm hesitant to go balls to the wall to try things.

Understand the hesitancy completely. But with nodding comes risk. It is always about whether you can accept the worst possible outcome.
Rom toolbox pro flashing recovery? I don't know never tried it.
Yes I would download the recovery. Leave it on SD card reboot to recovery and flash like a rom.
Yes nandroid tibu and saving your contacts to Google is the quickest way to get up and running again.

Mighty, just wanted to report that flashing TWRP 2.5.0.2 from within ROM Toolbox Pro worked like a charm. I'm on TWRP as we speak.
Thank you so much for your responses. If anyone else has anything to add, or a different response to my questions, please do so! In the meantime, I'm going to try to figure out how to get my nandroid backup working...

*EDIT* Made a backup with TWRP (whose interface is bloody phenomenal, btw), flashed CWM and its working like a charm!! Going to try the st0ckdr0id one as well. Still working on getting that nandroid working so I can recover my stuff and get to customizing!
