Is there another solution to talk and surf on the S8+ Sprint - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

So im loving my S8+ so far coming from a glitchy Note 5.
I have been using the Hangouts dialer app to be able to talk and surf at the same time with Sprint. It works but it sucks for business.
It sucks because it drops calls all the time. Especially if Im on the phone with an automated system or big company. It will just hangup. Ebay is the worst with this. As soon as it hears hold music it seems to hangup or disconnect
Or if im on a call using Hangouts dialer app. If i get an incoming regular call it will automatically drop the Hangouts call without warning.
Any other apps or solutions to try????? I need to talk on the phone and look up things on the web or get data notifications while im on the phone sometimes.
Thanks

There's no way to use data and phone service on Sprint. That's the way that the network is made.

It's just one reason Sprint is the worst network in america by far

But yea nothing can be done its how there data is setup its on the same line as calling.

It was a stupid decision, made by people who don't work there anymore. Sprint has made major improvements in my area with service and gave me a good deal to stay with them. No, they are far from perfect but they work for me.

Tried them for free for over a year. In my area(top 10 city in the country by population) they suck and I feel like it was not even worth the $0 price I paid.

You can do it with the hangouts dialer....
Its just i was wondering if there was a similar app that worked better.
Sprint does suck but im not going to pay 15-20 more a month for T mobile

I had sprint for many years suffering with all the black holes in my city. Went with a new provider that has 22gig unlimited on the Verizon network. While sprint has awesome speeds if you are next to the tower , you might as well not have a cellphone if you aren't. I got mostly 3g wherever I went, and this is a top 25 market. You could talk and use data on a note 3. That's long gone.

Thanks!

I've had it this way for a while, so just is what it is. I get better service with sprint that verizon or att offer here (co workers have one or the other and its really sad) and tmobile...they are a joke.
That said, i'd love to find a legit app solution to this, I can't have anything sketchy (dropping calls due to others, etc) due to the nature of my job.

They will be enabling a solution to allow data usage while in a call sometime this year. It's an important feature so I believe it's a high priority.

Anything in writing or did you just make that up? It's been this way for over 3 years but now it's important enough to fix?

I don't have anything in writing, but it's been complained about for a long time and the people in charge now, actually care and listen. I don't believe it's easily fixed but they are committed to making it work like it should.

Well I've been employed there for 16 years and these are the only executives that have actually known what they are talking about, cared about what customers and employees think and delivered on what they said. They were handed a big ol turd and from my perspective, they've done more good in less than 3 years than the previous regime did in 10.
I'm not on the wireless side so I don't know much about that tech and how it works.

Google sprint VoLTE. Sprint needs to update to voice over lte for voice and data to work simultaneously. Supposedly they are going to update to Volte soon. I'm not holding my breath though

The only solution with the state of current hardware is for sprint to switch to voice over lte, there won't be any other solution.

Well actually you can but its device specific, all the latest phones over the last several years don't support that feature but older phones did at one point. Phones like the evo lte and gs3 and possibly gs4 and a few others supported svlte, which is voice and data at the same time. If you had one of those phones now, you will still get voice and data but its due to the hardware set up of the device and not the network.

I KEEP Getting told they're reconstructing the networks. Should be done by end of year.
I keep saying HOW THE HECK do you expect to compete when the biggest feature is missing.
I'm not understanding how it could be hardware though. When they sell the same thing as Verizon.

They will do testing this May 31, but i read only is in two model of phone, and GS8 not appear.

Sprint reportedly cancelling its early upgrade program June 1st

http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/16/sprint-cancelling-early-upgrades/
(memo is in the link above)
Like dominoes, Sprint's consumer-friendly policies continue to fall one at a time. Citing "high costs," the Now Network will begin discontinuing its practice of allowing customers to upgrade their phone 10-14 days prior to the official date of eligibility. According to the memo leaked by TechnoBuffalo, the program will cease to exist as of June 1st. It sounds like this policy change is an unfortunate consequence of the company's large investments in iPhones and its still-dormant LTE network. It may not be enough to convince many Sprint customers to jump ship, but this isn't the first cost-cutting measure put forth by Dan Hesse's team -- and we have a hard time believing it will be the last. We've reached out to Sprint for official comment and will update you as soon as we have word.

not sure why this is that big of a deal? is that really that much of an incentive?
unless your early eligibility window directly coincided with a major phone release (like the iphone5 which i hear has the same cloaking capability as Predator and is run by cold fusion with a display that beams directly to your brain) and you HAVE to be the first one to get it...then who cares if you have to wait until you are actually eligible for the upgrade to get it??

Yes it will definitely happen at some point. everywhere the iPhone goes eliminates the "unlimited Data Plan".
Verizon today also said that they're no longer allowing people to be grandfathered in. So no unlimited for anyone.
But i agree, this isn't that big of news too me but it is somewhat heartbreaking to see. First they destroyed the Premiere Members plan and now this.

IMO that'd be their kiss of death. It's the ONLY advantage they have compared to ATT and VZ. With all the other niggling changes (the change in how discounts are applied, the change in how shared plans are accounted for, etc) they are barely ahead of VZ in price for me (4 4G phones - what where's 4g?? - and 1 basic phone, and i can get away with 4gb data most months no problem) and if the network doesn't get better, i'm gone, let alone how fast I'd bail if they limited their unlimited...

I still do not believe that iPhone has made connection slow for others and Sprint has said (if their truth to it or not) that iPhone has not slowed down data speeds for us other phones.
iPhone is not the problem, it's people who are with VZW who obviously don't mind paying a premiere price for their phone bills. Sprint is playing catch up with these other companies and becoming more and more of a elite company. no more of this VZW>ATT>SPRINT crap. they will be the 3 headed monsters in due time

True but reverse the question, does it hurt Sprint to keep something that small of a perk?
It probably cost more money to update the staff & the system on the few minutes they took to address it.

Very possible it will. I've read an article (PCWorld, I think it was) that explained it clearly. Each carrier purchases/rents a certain amount of data spectrum. Verizon and AT&T started throttling and limiting data because usage on their respective spectrums were getting close to the limit. NOW, taking that into consideration, Sprint very literally owns/rents half of the spectrum that Verizon and AT&T do. So, what does that tell you? Eventually, even though they are not ready to state it publicly, chances are Sprint will abandon unlimited data.

True story, sir.
The thing is that Sprint always releases their flagship HTC phone in about the middle of May. Many people's upgrade date is June 1st, so that 14 days allows people who want to upgrade have the ability too pre-order. Now I hope that Sprint and HTC work together and make their flagship phone released on June 1st.

Honestly guys do you really think the Iphone is what pulls in the data? I'll give you an example. With my evo 3D, I pulled in over 9GB's last month on 3G and a little 4G(no torrenting) but both of my sisters own the iphone and they used 4 GB's together on our shared plan. One is somewhat tech-savvy but is on it constantly while the other uses it mainly for phone and pandora. Most iphone users don't know how to rape the unlimited data plans like I do. It's only going to be unlimited for so long so why not use it up. You want to complain you should complain to the average user on this site. We are the people using up the data not most of the iphone users.

I'd rather not look at it as a "use as much as I can while it's still free" situation. If I need to download something significant, I'll use my home computer on broadband. I rarely download new ROMs directly with my phone. I'd rather not contribute to Sprint even having to consider throttling by only downloading what I need to with my phone so I can use more when I really have to.

sprint shouldn't consider throttling because people are downloading things with their phone, thats the whole point of havnig an unlimited data plan, to not have to nit pick when and which files to download
it'd be different if i was downloading movies to my phone, to then transfer to my computer instead of just using my computers broadband, but why wouldn't a user with unlimited data download a file through the phone, when the file is for the phone?
lets all stop streaming music also, i mean we could download it with our computers, then transfer it to our phones, then make a playlist, that'd save sprint from having to throttle!

It may cost more and in the long run for the phone but no contract, or any of the att bull crap. Thats just my 2 cents.

Right now AT&T's LTE Network is Completely Unsaturated in most areas, if you look at mine & Wish777's Ultimate Modem Megathread you'll see proof of what a network at 25% of ideal capacity can do. Look at the UCLE2 results. Speedtests screenshots, latency averages, upload & download.
In short, it's the most consistent LTE i've seen, and i've owned LTE data cards on verizon and an Overdrive on Sprint.
It's well worth it. The service is top notch. Customer service? Well...what carrier can claim that as one of their strong points?
AT&T mainly got a bad rep because of the iphone. The truth is, the iPhone wasn't built for america. It was built using an Infineon radio designed for use in densly populated areas-- ie Europe and Asia. The AT&T networks weren't set up to communicate the way the iphone liked to. The "way" the iPhone communicates was surely preferred, but nonetheless, they weren't prepared-- no carrier was.
I'm discussing this because i think it's important. If you look at custome satisfaction and dropped calls before the iPhone (in my experience, no other phones had this issue) AT&T was at the top. Now, the number #1 blemish on AT&T's service record is this issue. If you don't buy an iPhone, you won't drop calls due to the network any more than other carriers...they don't publish data on this, but i make about 5 phone calls a day, for about 5-10 minutes each. I've dropped 4 calls in the past 10 months...and all of them were on the iPhone. I got my note the day it came out, and besides the first ICS leak's shortcomings when it came to hangs, freezes, and FCs, i haven't dropped any call. Nor have i hit a dead-zone anywhere-- even in places i should have. I frequently visit hospitals and other large businesses, and i often have 3-4 bars in places i used to have 0.
But service quality is largely local, and for this reason, i'll summarize my suggestion as such:
Nearly all carriers (including the small ones-- and AT&T) have a policy (as directed by law in some states) that upon the 30 day mark, if you're not happy with your service, you can return the phone and nullify your contract.
You can't go wrong with testing the Note for thirty days, and you can't rely on media reports, or notorious high-maintenance (technologically =D) iPhone users for your judgment of any carrier. My guess is that your service will be ten times better than Sprint's, and even if the service was worse, 2 weeks with the Note will have you begging to stay around. =P

I was a 10 year Sprint customer, and, over the last year or so, their service went to hell, their prices went up, and their network sucked big time.
ATT has been great for me; fantastic LTE speeds, pricing is less than Sprint for my family of 3, and the Note is fantastic, speed, view ability, and in every other way..
I'm no ATT fanboy, but so far, this is the best cellular experience I have had in the last 20+ years!
Thank you all! , like I said before, for a person like me who use about 2Gb of data a month what would you recommend as a data plan?

I second that, good service from cell towers / customer service. I'm in a very small town considering what I've seen from other users. We don't have LTE yet, just HSPDA or whatever it's called. But no dropped calls EVER, and data is consistent and reasonably fast.

ATT.com has a coverage map. And it looks like Ft. Worth even has LTE. So coverage is good. To give a better idea on dropped calls, data, or anything of the sort you would have to know an exact location. But this really isn't the forum for all this, is it?

Can't Make Calls or Text until Oct. 14th

Just got off the phone with Sprint, and they said I won't be able to make a phone call, receive phone calls, or even text messages until October 14th because they are in the process of upgrading their towers to the new LTE network in the Fort Worth area. It's weird to own a phone that I can't use for the most basic features. GO Sprint GO.
P.S. Any recommendations on how to make a phone call or text over data so I can still make calls/text?

P.S. Any recommendations on how to make a phone call or text over data so I can still make calls/text?

Sounds fishy... It's hard to believe that a carrier would just deny services and continue to charge for them. I assume this would mean no service for anyone in the ft worth area since you're not the only one who uses those towers. I don't think Sprint would risk the class action lawsuit.

No arguments there. I'll probably call back in a few days to see if they have anything better for me. Right now I'm sick and lost my voice, so I just don't want to deal with it. But once I get my voice back, I'll see if I can't get anything better out of them. Especially since I'm still paying for when I can't even use my phone which is kind of stupid.

Why would you call back in a few days? I would all over them about this if it were me and I wouldn't let up until I had a real explanation. Tell them to fix your **** or let you out of your contract (as not providing service to you while I assume you are in good standing and not violation the TOS on their part)
However, there are at least 3 sides to every situation what you say, what sprint says, and what really going on. Not calling you a liar it just seems like there is more to the story.
That's my 2 cents.

Sounds like a load of BS to me. I haven't had a problem with service around the area... I haven't actually been into "Fort Worth" in a few days, but I live pretty damn close. There is no way they could just shut off all services like that for almost two months. That rep must have been new or lied or something, because that doesn't even SOUND reasonable.
lol if they couldnt provide me service until Oct. 14th i would have just said i want to cancel without a fee immediately because i do business with my phone. and they can't really do squat because i pay for a service and they don't even let me do the most basic of functions.
OP needs to call back and get clarification. Only thing I have found:
https://www.sprint.net/maint_view.php
I might try to call again tonight once I get off of work. But again I'm not entirely sure what to say. Plus right now, I've lost my voice, so I can barely talk, as a result, I can't even show anger in my voice, so getting made isn't much of an option. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do yet.
I'm like on day 5 of this **** it reallllly sucks. I live in Irving an have been having everything except the "can't make calls". Sprint needs to give a free month or something better.

Same here. Today is day 5 for me as well. But according to Sprint, I still have a lot of days left in front of me since the tower won't be back on until October 14th.

You should see if you can get an Airrave which makes your phone work over wifi... that really sucks tho. That only works at home tho...maybe they can send you a 2nd one for work.

I just got off the phone with the a Sprint manager last night, who then connected me to her EVO specialist. She was also unable to solve the problem, so she told me that she will get the towers in the area looked at and try to determine what is going on in the area and give me a call back within 72 hours. That said, they said they were going to do this once before 5 days ago now, but I still haven't got a call back from then. However, one good thing that I got out of it all is that they are crediting my account for the past 6 days and how ever many days more it takes to get my phone back on the network. So at the very least, now I'm not paying for phone service that I'm not getting, so that makes me happy. I'm sure they will figure something soon with the towers if not maybe they can give me Airrave so I can at least make phone calls while I'm at home which would make things more liveable. I'll keep everyone posted on what they discover and what they decide to do.
In addition, my location is the TCU campus in Fort Worth. I live close by and go to school there. In both areas I get no cell service. But once I drive about 5 miles away I have no problems. Let me know if anyone else in the area is experience the problems on XDA. The sprint store nearby between Berry and Hulen St. said they have had a few customers coming the past few days with the same problem, but I was curious if anyone on here was also experiencing my pain.

If that is the case it is either a provisioning error, phone isn't set to cdma only or bad phone.

I don't think you have the same problem that I do, because if I leave my area my phone works, fine. I'm only having trouble when I'm at TCU or at my house which is right next to TCU. But who knows, maybe they are related.
P.S. I've already changed my phone to CDMA only to see if it would help but got no change. Plus I've already taken it into the Sprint store, and they said everything was fine with the phone and factory reset it and everything, but saw no problems because their building is outside of my tower radius, as a result the phone worked perfectly there.

Pair Gear S from one carrier with S5 from another carrier?

Wondering if anyone can answer this for me. I am up for renewal on my work line through ATT and wanted to make sure everything would function correctly if I got the gear s on my work line and paired it with my personal phone through verizon. Anyone have any experience with this and can share some insight? Thanks!

An update to the Gear Manager came thru last night that broke the remote connection between my ATT phone and Straight Talk watch.
Samsung and the carriers are working hard to make sure both devices remain on their networks in order to have remote connections work.
Do backups prior to accepting updates....

Yeah, after a reset and some tinkering I was able to get it working again.
Did you see Verizon's terms on the watch? $349 on contract and $45-$55/month Doesn't make sense comparing it to the other OEMs. The wildly different prices and terms from the big three are going to come with restrictions. Think about it, why would you buy the watch from Tmo for $400 if you can just walk to the ATT store, pay full price, get it unlocked and save $100?
After a good talk with a friend at Samsung, he said that right now the remote notifications are being handled by Samsung's servers... But not for long. That control will ultimately be transferred to the OEMs. Updates to the watch and phone app could soon kill the ability to receive cross network notifs. According to him, this will happen in two stages....First, through the mobile data connection, then via Wi-Fi.
So far, I have hit one road block after another getting this device unlocked even tho I paid full price and seeing a few XDA members post successful unlocks. The latest excuse from an ATT Support Supervisor, is the $299 price is for ATT GO customers only. If you wish to buy it in an unlocked state, you must first tell the rep your intent prior to purchase, pay $399 and then the store mgr will override the unlock prevention. I found this out on Tuesday and called my ATT rep (worked with him for 9 years), and this was all news to him. Waiting for callback....
Just posting what I've learned in the last 13 days and an FYI for those wanting to use these devices on different networks.

Let's hope a decision is made down the line to not lose cross carrier notifications. It's really the one thing I like about the watch.

Jeez the news about them locking cross carrier stuff sucks if it's true. I swear they are trying to kill this fricken device before it has a chance to succeed. From my understanding you can still use this through Bluetooth and get all the functionality right? (albeit through your phone and not the Gear S's own number)
I haven't seen any reviews of people using it without one. Starting to think maybe I should just cancel my order and hold off...
EDIT: To specify I mean functionality like respond to texts and email/ make calls and what not. Just through the phone its paired to.

Unfortunately, this situation isn't any different than Samsung's ridiculous decision to make these compatible with only their latest flagship devices. They are losing SO many sales due to this silly decision.
As to your inquiry...Yes, even without a SIM card, the BT connection will give you all the functionality of the companion Gear models. But, obviously, none of the standalone and remote features will be usable.
Overall, I've been very happy with this watch and amazed by it's features and hardware. However, the lack of quantity and quality apps is very frustrating. Again, another moronic decision by Samsung to provide an OS that is considered to be inferior to Wear, and is slated to be the OS for their cheapo line of phones.
Where is the logic in this??? Here they build a flagship watch and decide to finish it off with the "blue light special" of OS's!?!?!? WTF to that....
Samsung REALLY needs to stop copying and, ultimately, trying to be Apple. They really do have the ability to be a leader and pave their own path, but instead continue to follow. Truly a shame.

Bit of a mixed bag imo. They ARE trying to do their own thing and push their own brand/eco system. Ultimately that is what every brand wants to aspire to. When iOS launched the app store was ****. Same with android and windows phone (albeit THAT one is still ****). Personally I feel that they might have jumped the gun with this one by making it SO goddamn enclosed inside samsungs ecosystem as it is, but they are kinda trying to be a leader by branching off into their own ****. I also want to say when I first looked into it there were devs semi excited about Tizen. I'll have to go research the os again as it has been a couple months (originally looked into it when the gear s was announced) Regardless, I am definitely not saying your wrong the choices they made on this phone seem to be stopping A LOT of people from buying. IMO they should have made some exclusive features that only work properly with Samsung phones that were innovative (not something expected in the device) enough to make you WANT to go out and get a note 4/ s5 to pair with it.

After my 1.5hr visit to the ATT store... My gear is now finally unlocked. I did not have to pay any additional $$$, nor do the lengthy activation/deactivation process mentioned in an earlier post.
Being armed with the ATT Unlocking terms and conditions page and the FCC regs helped get this done. But, it's ridiculous that I would even have to go to this level.
If and/or when you go into the ATT store to make this purchase, be sure that you deal with one of the managers. The regular reps are clueless in this respect.

Help me understand before I buy....

Considering this watch to pair with my N4. With it having it's own dataplan/number, are there instances where I call and text someone from a number they aren't familiar with or does it forward everything through my phone? For instance, if I send a text from watch, does it come from watch # or my phone #? I've read that if it disconnects from your phone in standalone mode the phone will forward calls to it, but if I start a call from the watch...am I calling from the watch # or does it send the call to my cell that actually makes the call?
Also, what has been your monthly cost to your bill with this watch?
Thanks!
I have the T-Mobile 5 dollar a month plan on mine. Unlimited talk and text plus 500mb data. As long as your connected to your phone, all calls or text made through the watch goes through your cellular number. If want to use the watch number for texts or calls, you have to disconnect from your phone and wait for the cellular modem to engage.

Not quite correct, as you can choose which number the gear S uses when making a call from the watch even if you're connected to the phone still.
It's in the settings on the watch and took me a while to find.

Actually, you are wrong. The option you are referring too. Which is in the call settings menu under the auto call forwarding option, where you can choose the outgoing number, is only selectable only after disconnecting from the phone and allowing the cellular modem to come on the Gear S like I said before.
Now you can leave cellular modem on all the time even when connected by bluetooth (which is likely your scenario) but it is the worst option for battery life. Second the menus are quite simple and direct, nothing to get confused on. Unless someone gives incorrect information.

If you are going to not use the cellular portion of the watch, I would recommend going to AT&T and purchasing the device outright. The outright price is $299 as opposed to T-Mobile ($349.92). AT&T should sell you the watch outright without needing a plan.
I located one at att and lady is telling me I cannot buy, even at full price, without an account with them. I have a verizon Note 4. She said it has to link with a phone on the same carrier in order to work correctly. True?

Also, if you do setup service with them, you can cancel it immediately and tether the device to your phone. You will NOT have to pay an ETF if you purchase the device outright.
