Turning an old phone into as close to Android TV. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys!
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900T3 laying around that we don't use anymore and I was wondering a way to turn it into a media and some gaming hub on it. Is there any launchers or ROM that would work? Wondering is there like a simple voice remote that I can pair it to the phone?

Look at Kodi. With the right modules, it should be able to do those things.

Pershoot's kernel allows that.
Thanks.
Would I need to install Pershoots kernel on both devices though.
I want to be able to use my galaxy nexus as a mouse/track pad on my 10.1.

This one has worked for me:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...Nlcmtlci5hbmRyb2lkLmFwcHMuYmx1ZXB1dGRyb2lkIl0.
I believe there are others but they require installing software on both tablet and phone. This is the only one I found that makes the phone behave as if it were a true bluetooth mouse.
Frankly, I've not found a good use for a bluetooth mouse (even a real one) since it doesn't look like the OS and/or the browsers support desktop browser features like hover over, which would be useful, or desktop style text selection. It pretty much behaves just like a surrogate for your finger. In that respect, a stylus is more useful if you just want to avoid finger grease on your screen or get a little extra precision.
Do you know which ROM you used? It's telling me my Bluetooth stack is unsupported?

Well, it runs on my phone, which is an HTC Glacier running CM7. I'm running Task 14 on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wifi.

I've got a hd ready tv, it's got a usb port at the back, but thats for services only, it's not a smart tv and I havent got DNLA....
Either buy a smart Blu-ray player or wait a few weeks for the Allshare cast dongle.
i posted in another thread, but I use the allshare cast on my tv/phone, or at least try to. The app on my tv freezes when trying to enter music or video folder. what gives?
Works perfectly for me, wireless to the tv and wireless to the SGS3.
Even use the SGS3 instead of my remote too.

Nexus Q is probably the best new option even if it is over priced.

[Q] Control Google Play Music on my tab from my phone

Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can offer any suggestions on this.
I have a Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) and a Galaxy S3
I play music with Google Play Music on my tab, and I want to be able to control it (change track, playlists, etc) from my phone.
Both Android, both Samsung, same application. Surely there must be something out there that can do this.
Essentially I want to use my phone as a remote control.
Ive looked, and I cant find anything, short of installing an ugly VNC connection on the tab.
If not, has anyone ever considered looking into it?
Thanks
Howie
I don't think Play Music supports remote device controlling yet, as far as I know. This would have to be built into the app in much the same way TV pairing is built into the Youtube app and not the device itself. Or so I think, but I could be wrong.

there is a great remote app for grooveshark that does this. I have not found anything for play music yet.

[Q] What IR Remote App To Use?

Hey Guys,
Finally got off stock and got CM 11 installed last night, I did lightly use my phone for TV control and was wondering what was the best app t use after you have a custom rom installed?
Smart ir remote, this is by far the best. I bought the pro version and the developer wrote a couple remotes that worked for my tv/DVD AV system in my truck/Tahoe. I didn't realize how nice it is to use tasker so when I get home depending on what room I'm in (which ap I'm connected to) the remote switches so I'm always controlling my room tv or living room tv, when the phone rings it mutes the tv. Or even go to the store and now I've got my truck stereo controlled with my phone.
I'm gonna attach a screenshot of a floating remote option that's genius.
I want this app to do well because the developer seems very passionate about it. Give it a shot you will like it.
HTC ONE 32gb M7
S-off, Rooted up, Unlocked, Tampered like he'll...
Running Maximus HD 30.0
4.4 KitKat Sense 5.5
No S4 UI Bubbles & Smiley Faces
What he said. Will probably ask for root permission but will definitely work.

Samsung dropped the IR Blaster for the S7/S7E. Here's a workaround that works 100%:

Note: This particular one is for Samsung TVs only:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...samremote.view
(However, they have apps for all major brands of TVs. This app actually works worlds better than the remote that came with the TV.

Screenie showing the names of the other apps for other manufacturers' TVs:

THESE ARE ALL 100% FREE. Turns out an IR Blaster has a really simple workaround, and you'll have it set up in like 30 seconds. You don't even have to be in the same ROOM to mute the volume/change the channel/or whatever it is that your friends are yelling at you to do. It works from anywhere in the house.
What app is it since the app has been removed?

Weird. It's called "Remote for Samsung TV" on the Play Store. If you have a problem downloading it from the Play Store directly, lmk, and I'll try using some different rooted devices to get you an actual copy.

This seems to be the one he is listing, as from FreeAppsTV... but unless he knows a trick I don't, it's only going to work with wifi-enabled smart TVs and monitors and isn't really a replacement for the IR function.
This app only works if you have a wifi enabled TV. If it's not a smart TV then this app is useless. But good find for the smart TV's...

Also it can not turn on your T.V. but it can turn it off. The whole point with having a remote control is to turn your TV on.
