Hot battery? Try this - LG G5 Questions & Answers

My phone was becoming very hot especially while charging and also during daily use. What seems to have fixed the heat issue is I removed the chin with the battery from the phone. I charged the battery while it was detached from the phone. That seems to have reset something.
Now when I charge the phone while the battery is inside the phone or using it, it no longer heats up.

I detached the battery and 'chin' and tried to charge it. After a hour I inserted the battery and turned on the phone. Battery was not charged (battery % stayed the same).
Can you please say if you first attached charger and then detached the battery (with charger) so it was charged?

The battery won't charge removed from the phone. But it seems to reset something.
I remove battery
Plug into charger
Leave it for 5 mins
Put the battery back into the phone.
Battery starts charging.
No longer hot.
I do this once a week.

What kind of nonsense logic is this? Maybe get a replacement phone or battery? Its obviously broken...

Agreed, something is wrong. But nonsense? I don't think so.
I have 2 OEM batteries that I rotate using. Both batteries have the same issue. They get hot.
I'm just passing on something that works for me. Use it or don't. Up to you.
I'm trying to help out the community by passing on something that works for me.
Your post helps no one...

Yes nonsense. I wont use it if it gets hot, could suddenly explode and harm you or other people. So dont do something illegal of risking that.

Plugged in all day or no?

I'm a truck driver, I work 12-16 hours a day. I use my bolt to listen to my hometown radio shows, and slacker when they aren't on.
Is it a bad thing to have it plugged in all day? I read once its fully charged it runs off the charger power..
Thoughts?

Someone did a test and after being fully charged the phone resorts to a trickle charge so you should be okay but probably.not the best thing for your battery.

so i came from the evo 4G where people threw hissy fits both ways. There were people who would claim left and right that it is bad for the battery, that the battery will catch fire, melt, explode, what have you, and then there was the other like 80% of us who used trickle charging with out a problem.
personally, and what I seemed to notice, the like 6 people who actually claimed to have issues with trickle charging had purchased and were using super cheap chinese batteries.
So i am going to disagree, and say there will be no issue with trickle charging unless you start using cheap chinese batteries, and even then the percentage chance of you having an issue is so minor.
I have noticed that until it gets to 100% it gets awfully hot. If I leave it charged/plugged in all day its cool to the touch.

looking at battery monitor widget my phone after hitting 100% charge is pulling 180 or less mA while "idle" and the temp sits about 32-33C. Seems to keep the Voltage very very steady. Whatever HTC did I really doubt it will hurt your phone in anyway.
I don't think it will hurt the phone. I do think it will make the battery have even less life though. I.e, when you finally do unplug it, the battery won't last very long. Batteries need to be charged and discharged often to work well.
My laptop at home stays plugged in all the time. And when I unplug it, it lasts about 10 minutes on the battery. lol

your laptop battery is probably not a lithium-ion battery. Please read said link. Your laptop battery is a NiMH which has the "memory" your talking about. Our cellphones have Lithium-Ion batteries.

No, my statement was 100% true. It might've been irrelevant because it's a different type of battery, but it was not false as you said.
I have read that LiOn batteries do not develop memories as bad as other types, but they still do to some extent. FWIW.
If you watch your phone, it stops charging when its full. I often pull the phone off the charger with less then 100 charge due to this and this is also why the bump charge will bump it back up too 100%
So leaving it plugged in ask day will have no harmful effects at all.

actually battery monitor widget says the opposite. My phone continues to charge after hitting 100%. It doesn't do what my evo would do stock, where it would charge to 100%, let the phone die to 90% and then charge back to 100%.

now how do you bump charge a tbolt that when powered off and u plug into a charger boots into recovery instead of staying off?

Personally I never shut my phone off, it's on 24/7/365, if I don't want to be bothered it goes into silent mode but is always on.
For me, I plug the phone in every night when I go to bed... when I wake up, I unplug it for a minute and then plug it back in. Normally when I wake up it's anywhere between 95-100% showing.... Once I'm done getting ready I grab the phone and off I go with a full charged battery.
Unlike some phones the android phones have never kept a 100% charge while plugged in... this is one thing I do miss from the iphone, it always kept it at 100% while plugged in. The android phones stop charging when it get's to 100% and start again at an unkown %.
There is no magic... the only reason for unplulgging it is to start the charging process again.
what's the exact name and publisher of that battery widget? i'd like to take a look at it.

Use the built in battery widget and see what you get.. it will display the actual percentage on the screen.
I doubt it's a problem, it should be capable of switching to a trickle or over to powering vs. charging in the circuitry. The worst thing you can do for these relative to the charge is drain them completely and let them sit drained. These days for the longest life, you'd keep it at around 3/4 charged, but it's not a huge difference in life usually. The reason for that is lithium batteries hold a native charge by default.

The phone should not overcharge the battery, lipoly batteries or rather the charging mechanism shuts down when it reaches capacity. They do not trickle charge. Lipoly batteries take approximately 1hr-1hr30 to charge, after that the charging circuit switches on and off as it drops a few percent.
Most lipoly phones 'lie' about when they are full so people dont get concerned as they appear to drain whilst still plugged in. They could infact still register 100% even when they are at 90%!
In the last stage of charging they can get warm. Even though the guage states charged it may still be finishing the last 'virtual' 10%. After 10 mins the battery should cool down, if it doesnt then there could be a fault.
Overcharging lipoly using unconventional techniques will lead to explosive consequencies.

My S3 can charge to 99% only :(

I don't know why my phone can only charge to 99% of battery, this is my second charge already and the first charge also can charge to 99% only
Anyone have same problem ?
Just leave it on the charger. Once it reaches 99% charging reduces to a trickle only. This is by design and not a fault. If you charge overnight you should find it at 100% in the morning .
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
This is renowned in the official samsung roms of the galaxy series. Do not concern yourself, there is nothing wrong with your phone.
so the best thing to do is to leave it like 1 hour on the charger? I find it annoying to .. If it says fully charged and remove the charger it should be 100% and not 99..
Thank you so much. But when my phone charge reach 100% and i leave it continue charge 2 hours more already and it still show 99% right after i unplug charger.
Don't worry about it at all. There is nothing you can do for it to say 100%. No matter how long you leave it on the charger, once the phone says it's at 100% and you disconnect it will drop to 99%. It isn't a fault, it's what samsung does.
If you want to be really nit picky, you could say that within a second of disconnecting the charger, the phone technically has used some of the battery to stay on, no matter how minimal, so 'technically' with some tiny tiny amount of battery used it is no longer at 100%

Leave your phone on charge, go to CWM wipe the battery then reboot. It should go back to 100% shortly. That's what I did and it worked!
Reason why it really doesn't charge 100% is to protect battery as li-ion batteries should never let completely empty or full as the battery can die.

Also has anyone else found that it takes longer to charge than other phones? I.e. my S2?
Im presuming this is due to the bigger capacity battery

I have read much about it. It is probably intentional. to save battery or something like that. Do not be so angry about it 99% it the new 100% haha

Wireless Charger Overheating Battery

Received my WCP-700 wireless charger and twice I have put my phone on the charger and minutes later phone is rebooting and battery temp close to 50C. I have noticed others having similar problems with other phones so I suspect it is a problem with the technology.
Anyone else having problems with the wireless charger?
If it happens again I am ebaying, it may be convenient but at least my usb charger does not cause my phone to shutdown from overheating.

I called up fazle and he says that his phone isnt as well.
I have the same one and mine doesnt overhead.
Surround electronics can mess with the charging and cause things to heat up. Also, make sure the cord isn't running parallel with charger. Check the manual to see what I mean.
Also the farther electricity has to travel, the hotter it gets. Try lining it up better.
I have zero trouble with my wireless charger, same LG wcp700 as you. And I've got a case on mine as well. You've definitely got something else going on.

Mine doesn't do that either. My suggestion is to pull it off of the charger as soon as you're at 100% and don't put it on until you're below ~10%. Magnetic fields inducing current causes heat to be released in the wires and surfaces -- it's something you can't stop if it's happening. I'm sure HTC took (some of) all the necessary steps to lessen this, but it still happens.

I wouldn't be making a habit of waiting until 10% to charge, you should get better battery life over the long term by charging before 30%

I VERY much disagree with you -- all of the phone manuals etc. say to wait until the battery is dead until you charge. The higher the battery is when you charge the more detriment to the battery life. With modern batteries, however, it doesn't very much matter because they've been designed to be better about this and you won't get much more time out of your batteries by discharging completely before charging.

There are varying views on this, but I was told never to let a LiPo get completely depleted. Beyond all of that, I feel heat is far worse for the battery. It looks like I am not the only one with problems with the tech, others are experiencing the heat issue:

Question Charging issue

Hey Guys,
Anyone else experience slow to almost non existent charging speed if the phone has been on for a few hours?
The only way it goes back to charging fast is if I restart the phone while its plugged into a charger.
I have tried using the stock charger and aftermarket ones and different cables as well. Makes no difference until restart.
Chime in if anyone has any idea whats happening and/or how to fix it.
PS: I am unlocked and rooted if that matters.
Is the screen off? Having the screen on during charging will skew the charge cycle.
Does it charge normally when shutdown?
Possible battery, charging port, or mobo failure.
Check phone for any signs of battery swelling.
Same issue here. Got the phone today, charges sloooow by USC-C as well as QI... Although it shows "fast charging" in settings. I will check, if it's better after a reboot.

Doesnt matter if the screen is on or off, I even left overnight and gained like 8% charge.
Battery seems to hold a charge fine, there is no swelling and discharge behavior is normal. Used to charge normally a few days ago.

SOT has it diminished significantly?
Charging at a start temperature above 72°F?
If so it sounds like a charge port or mobo failure... sorry.
Try clearing the system cache and a hard reboot.
Try toggling fast charging on/off 3 times.

Make sure the port is clean and free of debris.
Inspect and carefully clean* if needed with a toothbrush and a small amount of anhydrous isopropyl alcohol.
Lol, RO water if needed than the alcohol.
Allow to dry completely.
*I live in a dusty environment and even after 2 years never had to clean my C port. However my bdu cargo pants pockets are lint free, not all pants pockets are. In general these ports seem to stay clean but you know how that goes...
Same here. Did someone find a solution?
In my case it just normalized itself after a few days of usage... strange thing was, that the slow charging affected both, usb and qi charging.
Glad you fixed.
Btw maybe intelligent charging. If phone can't detect a time where you don't use it it have problem adapting charging speed. If you change everyday the moment you put it on charge better deactivate that option
If I may continue this thread, I have another question about the charging. Is it possible to disable fast charging?
I only charge at night so I don't need my phone to warm up from quick charge. On my old Samsung Galaxy Note 9 I could do it, but now I can't find the setting.
Thanks.

The only harmful part of the charge cycle on this phone is the top-off, and you can adjust that. You could use a 5W charger but I doubt it would extend the life.
More beneficial is checking other threads for features that may drain (add wear to) the battery.

Simply use a 12 watt or less brick.
Fast charging needs a compatible 25w brick and cable (Samsung). In most phones it has to be enabled. Disabling fast charging is easy... enabling it sometimes is not

The whole point of having a feature is to use it when needed. If I am in a hurry I want to activate 30W charging with a single toggle in the settings. I don't have to bring two different power bricks, one 5W, one 30W, and manually switch between them.
