Mobile Backup Tool For Samsung Mobile Phones - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,
I need help to find a mobile backup tool , as my company CEO is always complaining for the mission contacts ..whenever we change his cell phone and restore the backup he complains alot bout missing contacts......please help me and recommend me a good software tool for samsung mobile backups.

Follow these steps to backup your contacts on Android.
Go to Settings > Accounts > Google.
Tap the account name at the top.
Make sure there is a check mark for Contacts.
All your contacts will be backed up to your Google account continuously. Note that the exact names of menus can vary between different manufacturers and Android versions. If you don't have Internet access on your phone, follow these steps.
Open Contacts.
Tap the three vertical dots on the top-right.
Select Import/export.
Tap Export to storage.
A pop-up will tell you where your contacts will be exported. Tap OK.
Open the file manager app on your phone. If you don't have one, you can download ES File Explorer.
In the file manager, navigate to the folder where the contacts are stored. If you aren't sure, search for vcf and the contacts file will show up.
Copy this file and store it somewhere safe. If you ever want to get this set of contacts back then you'll need to use the import function in contacts, to import the data from this file.

We have an issue here our ceo doesnt like gmail and he dont want to put his data on gmail... so we have move all of his contacts to outlook but the prb with the outlook is that the contacts appear on outlook is not sync with whatsapp , means no whatsapp icon is showing against the contact.also pl note that the contacts are in the count of 18000 above

Moving phone contacts to google contacts

I'm I'm a new G2/Hero user, great forum here.
I really like the fact google contacts sync up with the phone & are phone independent, is there any way of making your normal contacts become google ones or an app to do it?
many thanks
If you set your phone up with a Google account then by default all your contacts will be synced with Google. Most mobile phones offer a facility to export the address book, often via MS Outlook which can then be further exported to Google and from there propagate to your phone.
I set it up with a google login first time I used it. The google contacts sync up fine but the rest of the contacts listed as 'phone' dont sync to google.
So what I was hoping is I can change the type from phone to google in the contacts listing then edit them on my computer & sync them back to the phone?
One other question does the google sync work both directions? Facebook images don't seem to appear in gmail?
Yes and yes. Make sure that the contacts are set as 'Google' and it should all work
Unfortunately after setting up some "Phone" contacts you cannot edit them and save as "Google" - or am I missing something?
And BTW, I'd like to ask people who are actually syncing their contacts and using Google Contacts as their primary source whether they suffer from the fact that Gmail adds all the email addresses that they had a conversation with as a new contact. Is that actually an issue?

that's exactly what I'm trying to do with no luck. New contacts I will set to google but I imported a load from my sim (150) which are all set to 'phone'
Another problem I had with the calendars, if you set them to only be google it doesn't change the new entry type from 'phone' so I put load of appointments in & couldn't see them which totally threw me. Luckily it does remember the type you set but it should change the default type when you set the view!
no, you cant change the contact type once it has been set. you'll need to delete them and create/import them as google contacts.
when in people and you press menu import, select google to import to the google list. that way they sync up automatically.
If you can't be bothered deleting all the ones in phone, just hide them...on the people list, press menu and select view, only tick google and voila, all the others are hidden.
to stop google from synching all the email addresses as well, go into people, go to the groups tab, press menu and select sync groups.
tick only 'My contacts'
problem solved.
thanks for the reply rhedgehog

I can only select "Sync all contacts" and a couple of groups I created - no option for "My contacts".
strange, i get it, and it should be there as it is a standard google contacts group....
There is an app on the market called ContactSync can help you with this. It's free.
tsekh501>> Worked like a charm, cheers mate
I wonder if anyone can help me. My contacts were stored as 14 on Google and 76 on 'phone'. I used the contactsync app and it said all contacts successfully synced to google. On my contacts list they all have 'Google' next to them.
The problem is, when i log into my google account on my pc I only have 14 contacts listed? Am i missing something here or is there something wrong?
PS - just to add, when i go to menu- settings - data sync - google - sync settings on my Hero, when i tick/untick contacts to try and force it to update i get a 'Sorry The process android.process.acore has stopped......Force close.
Bump! Anyone?
Getting the same problem... Running MCR 2.0...
Odd one this, and I only get the error message when I set the phone to sync my contacts.
Anyone wanna bid in on this one?
Bad idea?

Tried this advice, and even threw in a reboot after running the ContactSync app. Got the same error-message. Has anyone completed this successfully?
I've been having the same problems- first the change only showing on the hero- and now the random crashes?
I since backed up my contacts to sd with exportcontacts (free on the market) as .csv and then uploaded them to my gmail via my pc.
Strangely, when I did, both copies of the contacts showed up online and I had to manually delete the second copy of each. I know it was both copies as i'd sorted them all into groups after using contact sync and the groups showed only on one of each contact.
Slight feature missing with the new Modaco rom. Did anybody use the feature where you could sync only certain groups in your contacts? This feature was present in the old firmware but is now missing.
Before you could go to People > Groups > Menu > Sync groups and the select the groups you only wanted to sync. This is not present with the new version. Also I can't seperate Google contacts as well. Annoying change for those who sync their contacts with Google.

Similar experience. However, I experienced an additional difficulty when importing the .csv file to gmail. When it imported the fields was all messed up. I tried to edit it in excel, but didn't get it to work. Quite a hassle, this. Wish they could have streamlined it just a tad more
So far with the 2.1 roms I have tried to sync my contacts that are not part of google contacts without success.
There seems to be no way of getting the option to make a contact a google contact if it is not already so.
I tried the ap loaded kindly on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5879272&postcount=6763 - which call contactsync (as above post)
but it doesn't work - saying something about the database being wrong.
Is this something that the chef's can make available in their roms (a hidden menu - or a menu option that could be put into contacts/people app) ? I think it's something HTC just overlooked when they created the app.

Contacts problem after 2.1

I backed up my contacts and text messages just before I did my 2.1 update. I tried restoring the contacts and nothing shows up in my phonebook. So I tried it a few times and still nothing.
But when I go into my messages and add recipient it shows my contacts and in fact shows them a few times because I tried the restore 4 times.
So 2 questions:
1. How do I get contacts to show in phonebook (yes I removed the battery and rebooted many times)
2. How do I clear the multiple entries?

SE released an update to the backup and restore app but they failed to let anyone know that it just might be needed as after the update the default 2.1 app often fails to retrieve backups from 1.6. Lucky for me I caught the update before I moved to 2.1 generic. No big deal, but now I am unable to switch back to Rogers firmware (nothing lost really, but...)
As for the multiple entries - yeah, you get one for each synch account (google, SE, backup) and for each type (email, phone, ...) A little of a PITA but you can merge them.

I thought I had the latest backup and restore. How do I know if I have the latest backup and restore?
So what you're telling me is there is no fix for this. And I will have to it manually. OH GAWD....
How do I get my contacts that show up in the messaging app to show up in the phonebook. Without having to enter each one?
Perhaps you can do like this:
1. Make backup of your contacts in the Address book to a VCF file
2. Delete all contacts in the address book (open address book, press menu and select delete contacts (select all)
3. If you have a windows computer, import the VCF to outlook
4. Manually delete duplicates in outlook OR export to CSV (Comma separated Values) file
5. Import CSV to excel, delete duplicates and save as CSV again.
6. Import CSV to Outlook again OR just copy the CSV file to your phones memory card and the import it from Address Book again.
You can do more or less the same on Mac too.
Helpful ?

The problem is, no contact actually show up when I press the phonebook icon.
BUT
if I go into Text Messaging and I press new message then press add recipient all my contacts show up.
How come it doesn't show up when I press the phonebook icon?
Somebody wrote the following, might be worth a try: (he did not say what the problem was)
Contacts: I had a problem restoring my contacts using Backup & Restore (the natural option you'd think) but after hours of futile attempts it turned out that you need to restore them from within the contacts (go to Contacts, Menu, Import Contacts), not Backup & Restore.
I found this in another thread, did you try it ?

I have the same problem with my X10 mini pro. At last, I delete all my contact and manually write again 1 by 1. So sad. Fortunately I still have backup in my X10i. If there is a solution. Next time it will help.

I had Exactly the same problem and after a lot of fruitless searching and messing with the phone settings i ended up with the same solution as above.
Just posting to confirm the above works.
I'm gonna post the solution as a separate thread for others.
I had a similar problem so I went back to my backup and restored the contacts again. Problem is, now every contact has every number email, address, address, etc twice!
How can I fix that?

I ran into this problem, did restore from Backup and restore several times, got some contacts back, not all, with many duplicate numbers.
This is what I did, I was the one who posted this in another thread, btw:

If you are sure you have the backup on your SD card (it should be under sdcard/system/PIM/PIMXXXXX.vcf where X is the number ie 00001.vcf, etc)
Go to phonebook, contacts, menu, delete contacts.
After that:
Menu, Import contacts, Memory Card, Phone contact, then choose the backup if you have more than one backup made.
That's what I did and all my backups were restored.
different take on problem
I have my phonebook contacts working totaly fine.
my problem is when I go to add contacts when making a sms message the contacts there are not only what is in my phonebook but MANY WEBSITES (craigslist, email contacts and the like). I cannot seem to find an option for doing multiple deletion's.
cleaned sd card (as in deleted crap folders) - looked for file or folder where this information would be stored - no luck

Edit android contacts on computer?

Hey everyone, searched through the forums and on google and couldn't find an answer. I got a HTC Incredible S and want to edit my android contacts on my computer.
I thought there would be an app with a web interface or something similar I could edit my contacts on my computer.
I have HTC Sync, but don't want to use Outlook to edit/add contacts.
Any ideas?

Kinda curious why you want to use pc to edit when you can it with your phone. Is it because you want to use a physical keyboard?
Have you tried Gmail? Your contacts are auto-sync'd with your Google account by default; just use the gmail Contacts interface to edit them quickly and easily. That's what I do.

Thanks for your suggestion, Just tried it then, it looks like a very promising app but has a few glitches which I suppose lays uniquely with HTC phones.
I can add/edit a contact all-right however when I delete a contact and refresh the list it comes back up.

Yeah, have a lot of contacts to add and don't want to use the phones touchscreen. Also I find HTC's interface to delete a contact a little convoluted and have a lot of old contacts I want to remove.

I've been trying to get my contacts from the phone via GMAIL using the Google account associated with my phone and cannot seem to find the contacts interface. I'll look through it again, maybe I missed something
EDIT: Found It, but it doesn't have all my current contacts in there. Maybe it's because the contacts are stored on the sim card and both programs cannot get sufficient rights.
I deal with this all the time after converting folks to Android. Here's the thing:
The contacts system on Android is very powerful and flexible. There are 3 places where "traditional" contacts are stored, and on top of that, every app can have contact records that integrate with your built-in contacts.
SIM card contacts - contacts stored on the SIM card (duh)
Phone contacts - contacts stored on the phone's internal memory
Gmail contacts - contacts stored and synced on Google's cloud
All these contacts can be found in the contacts app - but you probably have phone contacts or SIM card contacts, that's why you can't find all of them in Gmail.
Here's what I suggest (I do this with every one who gets a new Android phone):
(based on how it looks when I do it, but how it looks when you do it depends on your android version, skin, gmail theme, etc.)
export all your contacts to a file on the sd card
contacts > menu > import/export > export to sd card
[*]copy this file to your computer
mount your phone's sd card to computer and copy file (should be called something like 00001.vcf or something like that)
[*]delete all contacts from the phone (this is so that you don't have duplicates and so that it doesn't get confusing)
settings > applications > manage applications > all > contacts storage > clear data
[*]go to gmail contacts and import the file
gmail.com > mail (top left) > contacts > more > import > choose file
[*]edit your contacts from your PC on a full sized keyboard for maximum comfort
hmm...
[*]make sure your phone can see your gmail contacts
contacts > menu > display options > choose contacts to display > google > system group: my contacts, facebook > all contacts, etc. etc.
[*]hit the thanks button

THIS. May also tell any new users to make sure they open Contacts and hit menu->More->Settings->Contacts Storage and pick their main Google account as the default location for new contacts, that way anyone they add later gets backed up to Google Contacts automatically.
(The simple fact that I was able to sync my Contacts with Gmail with my old iPhone and 3 different Android phones is the only reason I've been able to keep the same contacts list for 4 years or so. Minus some idiocy that Sense sticks in your Notes, it's worked super well, too, saved me many times from losing numbers.)
I like Gmail. When you change a contact on your phone GMail get changed as well and vice versa.

This is due to CM roms removing this code from the OS as they remove all Google based coding. Same reason there is no sim option

That's odd. CM7 is AOSP and syncs automatically to your Google account. I've been using CM7 since the inception and never been prompted.

Only if you install gmail. Remember cm roms don't use Google apps by default.
Also don't forget that CM is based on AOSP but they do alot of code changes so its not pure AOSP.
There is a software called as MobileGo. You can edit your phone contacts.
Remote web desktop
I use a plugin for my email client (thunderbird) to sync my gmail contacts, so i can edit them in thunderbird

Yeah, but I DON'T want my contacts to be synced with gmail or any other cloud.
I want them synced with Outlook. And I want them edited in Outlook (see above).
Or if not in Outlook, in any other computer-based address book or contacts editor.
And if my contact is named Đuro Šeširđija, and I want all those crazy characters on phone too.
And I want him to have picture I assigned, not his avatar on gmail/FB/whatever profile.
I humbly apologize if I was rude.
For now latest Kies will do...
I'm been having problems syncing with google for a few days now dont know whats going on wiped my phone thinking all my contacts were backed up online but for some reason there no longer there but was there a couple of months back? also tried to restore and no luck
I have my contacts synced to google contacts, you can edit them in gmail and it will show up on your android device. And it helps because you never have to backup your contacts.

Instead of using a import/restore app for your contacts, you could always sync it to your google acct and it will automatically restore once you sign in during initial google setup...

I have similar problem where all my contacts have been duplicated and then there are contacts with no phone no.'s. Isnt there a way to group the accounts or delete duplications?
-Phone > contacts > visible contacts > Show all
-Export all your contacts to a .csv file. (on the sd card)
-Delete all contacts: phone, sim, Google and others (tango, Whatsapp etc.)
-Log in to your Google account and import your contacts from that csv file you created. I suggest doing this on a pc.
Now, in Google, you can manage your contacts by editing, merging or marking all and deleting duplicates (if there're any)
Your phone will automatically sync all your refined Google contacts and of course Tango, Whatsapp, Viber etc. will get that contact list and everything will be synced and perfectly set up.
Then it's up to you what contacts you want to have in the contact list and whether you only want to show "phone numbers only"
Saving contacts on phone or sim card is a bit old school
I'd like to recommend, like y2quila suggested, using Google for contacts because it's reliable and painless. It's also a great time saver, especially when changing phones or in case you lose your phone or sim card. All you have to do is logging in to your Google account and voila

I have similar problem where all my contacts have been duplicated and then there are contacts with no phone no.'s. Isnt there a way to group the accounts or delete duplications?

If your contacts are already on Google then log in to your account and mange them by marking all and deleting duplicates. If they're not on Google I suggest doing so by exporting them to a file on sd card or pc and then importing them in Google and doing as suggested.

i view all contacts together and then upload them to google account then locate contacts.google.com and there i edit them so i start search in my contacts for example i seach ( @yahoo ) and delete all ( @hotmail ) and delete all etc etc then for facebook contacts i hade to chose them one by one you can see them names without numbers i also select them manualy
but after all i have a problem with whatsup messenger when installing i get error about android.acore.proccess crached and after a too many retries i get it installed and even so after installed i get every 15 sec the error message so i think ur problem is def than mine so i hope u get help
and another thing managing the contacts from contacts.google.com is easier becuase when ur done deleteing non numbers accounts select them all and from option menu click on find duplicates and then remove them or search google play store for duplicate remover
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=duplicate+contacts&c=apps

Contacts do not sync with google contacts

I installed google contact sync apk but still I do not have contact sync.
I reset to the factory settings and the same problem. Contacts are sync during configuration and no more. I see the date of last contact sync and even I try to sync now the contacts do not sync. Anyone knows why?
My phone PLK-AL10, EMUI 4.0.1, ROM 6.8.16
p.s. I can not (like others) update via OTA to 6.9.1 !
1- Were your contacts syncing before installing google contacts?
2- Have you checked app permissions to see if it can modify, delete and create contacts?
3- have you used any other app (i.e. form PC like Thunderbird, EmClient and other PIMs) to see if you can have bidirectional change in contacts?
Have you checked your "Contacts to display" option?
Accidentally you might have selected SIM contacts only to view.
May be you would have synced your Contacts. But it might be restricted in the view.
Hi,
I still have a problem with noc contact sync.
1- Were your contacts syncing before installing google contacts?
Before 2 months there was no problem with sync. Yes before also contact sync.
2- Have you checked app permissions to see if it can modify, delete and create contacts?
Yes, I check permissions. Yes I delete google account and create new one.
3- have you used any other app (i.e. form PC like Thunderbird, EmClient and other PIMs) to see if you can have bidirectional change in contacts?
I do not use any another client from PC. On PC I just use gmail in browser.
Have you checked your "Contacts to display" option?
Yes I checked it also.
Accidentally you might have selected SIM contacts only to view.
No.
May be you would have synced your Contacts. But it might be restricted in the view.
No.

OK, this is what I would do:
1 - backup with Huawei native app
2 - factory reset
3 - boot phone and don't setup anything, just skip all you can
4 - let the OS settle background processes for 15m
5 - reboot and add Google account
6 - check sync options
7 - test creating a contact to see if it is updated at Gmail web view
Another thing you might check is if you are using a ROM version with that known problem and if there is any update.

This is little silly question, anyways will confirm.
Are you adding your contacts to your google account ? or selecting SIM (or) Mobile to save the contacts ?
