Trying to unbrick Galaxy S7 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I managed to soft brick my S7 and I'm nearly done unbricking... except not really.
I've downloaded my devices firmware and tried to flash it using Odin but for some reason its not working, I get stuck at 'setup connection'.
After reading some other threads, I think the problem is my USB drivers, I'm a noobie so I'm not sure what the relevance of USB drivers are however after installing both Kies and Smartswitch, both are not recognizing my device (smartswitch apparently doesn't work for rooted devices which would explain why).
Any ideas for a fix? Thanks in advance

Galaxy S3 soft brick help

Hi guys,
I'm pretty sure I soft bricked my s3, upon reboot I get the samsung logo followed by a black screen with the bootloader sound in the background. I have looked into "unbricking" guides, but I can't follow them correctly because of the problem I wil explain below.
The main issue here is that I can't get a PC or Mac to read my phone, so technically I can't unbrick it until i solve this issue. On PC, I have installed the correct drivers multiple times without success, and as for Mac I am using Android File Transfer.app which was working for me fine up until I soft bricked. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I've had this phone for 12 hours and now I can't use it lol.

[Q] Download mode not recognised bin 7 (64 bit) - drivers are installed - no recovery

Hello
I've had this problem for a couple of days now and while Google is turning up plenty of threads and solutions nothing seems to be working.
Yesterday I tried to encrypt my SGSII and but it failed and would no longer boot. So I flashed a no ROM via recovery (there was a notice about corrupted memory) and restarted. Since then I've only been able to access the phones download mode. Most posts with this kind of problem suggest that Odin is required. Windows will not recognize my phone in while in download mode, therefore I can't use Odin. Windows will, however, recognize it as a Samsung SGSII in the device manager if I let the phone boot up and hang at the SGSII logo screen.
The things I've tried so far
Installing Kies
ONLY installing samsung usb drivers
Cleaning the usb port
Rebooting phone and pc several times
Tried different cables
Tried a different PC
Additional info: Last ROM I was running was one of the cyanogen 10 nighties.
Sorry everyone, I know this seems to be a pretty common problem but I'm just out of ideas to try.
So, do I need to buy a new phone? Any ideas would be really appreciated.
Cheers

[Q] Soft brick, halp!

Hi guys,
I think this doesn't look good, due to the way it failed. It was working just fine, using NeatROM. Just came after a walk, using it no problem. Let it rest for a bit while I was doing other things, and then when I check it again, it's dead.
It doesn't go beyond the Galaxy S2 logo, it doesn't get to the bootloader. Custom Recovery doesn't load. Download mode does start, but Odin hangs in "NAND write start". What would be your recommended steps?
Since I installed the crappy Samsung Link on my home laptop, I'm going to put the blame on that, and will use the work laptop that is clean of Kies or other crap. But i'm not very optimistic of how this looks...
EDIT: OK, so tested on a different laptop. Samsung USB drivers downloaded/installed, ODIN 3 v1.85. Still hangs on "NAND Write start!"
Try with usb drivers first, but kies is always a safe bet (of course, you need to kill its applications before flashing, all four of 'em).
This is probably an usb problem or odin version.

Hi Gastonw,
Thanks for your reply. However I'm now with a "virgin" laptop, with samsung usb drivers installed specifically for this. And still no luck, still hanging and the NAND write
EDIT: Just to confirm, this laptop has never had Kies installed, and I'm just running with the USB drivers, without Kies.
Alright, I want you to try all usb ports and try with different odin versions.
Genuine SII cables?

[Q] Root when phone is not detected

Hello everyone, I could not find a good title for my issue but I will try to explain as well as I can. I own a GT-I9300 (International), but since last official Samsung's firmware update(Jelly Bean 4.3) I am not able to get my phone recognized by my computer. Phone is connected and it charges, but neither Windows or Ubuntu recognizes it as a portable device. I am concerned about UMS is not available on device, but my phone it does not even get detected! I also own a Galaxy SII (4.1.2) and it does get detected by my PC. I think that flashing a custom ROM could solve the problem, since it appeared when I updated official firmware, but the thing is that I cannot root my phone! Tried ODIN but since my phone does not get detected, ODIN does not do its job. I also tried rooting with framaroot and towelroot, but no success: first one says "Failed , try another exploit" but there is only one. And the last one says my phone is not currently supported, even if I change modstrings.
So here is my question: how do I root my phone? I don't know what else I could try. I have already reinstalled Kies and Samsung USB drivers but still not working. Also hard-resetted but no luck.
Hope you guys can help me out because this is really getting on my nerves
Thanks in advance!

I have already tried with every port on my PC. I'm using the USB cable that actually came with the device and it is working when I plug in another phones.
And yes, I have activated USB debugging

The thing is that my phone is the only one that do not get detected every single time I connect it. I have already connected one GT-I9100 and GT-S6790L and both get detected. I already tried on 3 different Virtual Machines with Windows XP, Ubuntu, Windows 8.1 but no luck.
As I said in the first post, I think it's a firmware problem since it appeared when I did the official update, which was this one:
Model GT-I9300
Model name GALAXY S III
Country Argentina
Version Android 4.3
Build date Wed, 05 Nov 2014 20:33:08 +0000
PDA I9300UBUGNK1
CSC I9300UVOUGNK1
MODEM I9300UBUGNK1

I can see your frustration Now a few things technically it is a misconception that you need root to flash a custom rom you can actually flash a custom recovery with Odin full wipe and then flash a custom rom from custom recovery (only thing is you will lose all your data because you need root to back up your data)
Now I know the above statement is not very helpful because as you said Odin doesn't detect it (but I thought I would mention it anyway )
The reason framaroot and towelroot, didn't work is because at the moment the only way to root S3 is with Odin.:crying:
You may have tried this but I will mention it anyway first uninstal Kies and all Samsung drivers from your computer ( kies can interfere with Odin) Then try installing these drivers here >> http://developer.samsung.com/techni...Lhp1GqlWRy92Q60CX6PP1mF!80806326?v=T000000117 << If you have tried this then sorry.
Also when you connect the phone go to Device manager in Windows and try to look for your device ( it may say unkown device) it should have a warning triangle right click on it select update driver software and then select browse from my computer and point to the drivers that you have downloaded see if that works.
Another thing to note is if you are using Windows 8 you need to disable Driver signature in start up options ( Google it) for Windows to recognize the drivers.

I already tried uninstalling Kies and Samsung drivers. Also I tried looking for device on Device Manager but it does not appear when I plugin my S3, but it does appear when I connect other devices like S2 or Galaxy Fame Lite. They appear as portable devices.
I'm using Windows 7 on my PC and have already tried with different OS over Virtual Machines and still doesn't work.
And thanks for that note, didn't know there was possible to flash a Custom Recovery without root, but I can't since ODIN doesn't detect device :crying:
Then it looks like you are running out of options I would use another computer not Virtual Machines
Okay I'll give it a try but as I said before, looks like an firmware issue, not computer's. Why would my computer detects two another Samsung devices but not mine (which used to work until last update)
Me, too!
I'm having a similar problem. Last week my GS3 stopped working, and I bought another one from Ebay with a cracked screen and swapped out motherboards. The phone seems to work as well as a stock Verizon phone on Jellybean would, but I can't get my Linux, Win 8, or Win XP computers to even recognize that it's attached. Different cables, each and every one of the USB ports, not even a blip. Device Manager in Windows doesn't even see it, and yes I got the developer options unlocked and have enabled USB debugging.
I've got the Samsung drivers installed, and tried to install the CWM device drivers from the SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 TOOLKIT V9, but there was an error and that didn't work, either.
USB connection issues are usually due to Windows conflicts, driver problems or the lead itself. If all these have been excluded then you have either a firmware issue in the bootloader, which is very uncommon, or a hardware problem. The usb port is easily worn/damaged/dirty also the motherboard might be the cause.
There is no silver bullet to cure, test each possible thoroughly.

I'm 100 percent sure that it is not due a Windows issue, I have already test every option. I have not considered the usb port to be damaged or worn, which could be possible but phone charges every time I connect it to computer. It just does not get detected as a device. But in order to assume it is a motherboard issue I will have to put away my feeling that the problem is caused by last OTA official update, since this problem started there.
If it is a firmware update issue, is it any option to flash another ROM?

As I said on previous posts, I have already installed and reinstalled Samsung USB drivers and made a factory reset -one from config. option and another one from Android stock recovery 3e (since I cannot install any advanced recovery -or even root it- to flash a custom rom). Doing those factory reset did not downgrade my last firmware update (when all my problems started).
I also said on previous posts that I tried towelroot and framaroot with no success. As tallman43 says, seems like international version of S3 does not support those kind of one-click to root apps.
-----------------------------------------------------
So far the only options available (if my theory about latest firmware update is the problematic one) are:
● downgrade firmware: [Q] How? Odin is not working since my phone does not get detected;
● root my phone in order to install an advanced recovery and flash a new ROM: [Q] Any way of rooting phone without computer (apart from towelroot or framaroot because I have tried and do not work for me)? I read one XDA post from 2 years ago to root S3 via console apk but latest comments assumes that method stopped working.
● install an advanced recovery without odin or root: [Q] How?
● fix USB firmware issue: [Q] I have completely no idea how to do it. (Already played with *#7284# and *#0808# but did not get my phone detected)
Please I need help, this is really irritating me and I am running out of ideas

I guess I have found out what the problem was. It was not firmware (as I thought). It was the micro USB port (as boomboomer said) which seems to not be firmly attached to the PCB. AC charging just seems to work okay, but not USB connections. I managed to figure it out by forcing the USB in a specific position to get it detected for 5 seconds, but then it disappeared.
Yeah, it was not as complex as I thought! I will try to replace that micro USB port as soon as possible, thanks everyone for your help!

Odin not detecting my phone

Hello, I have a problem with my galaxy y GT-S5360 which is stucked at Samsung logo https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-y/help/root-galaxy-y-s5360-stuck-samsung-logo-t3738840.
I checked on the net and I read that I should root it with Odin to solve my problem
I am trying to follow the tutorials but Odin is not even detecting my phone. I installed Samsung usb drivers, I changed the cable, I changed the USB port but Nothing is working.
Anyone can help me how to make odin detect a galax Y ?
Thanks in advance.

I don't have this device but, your best bet is to post this question within the following Q&A thread that's specific to your device.

Good Luck!

thanks for trying to help, I asked my question many days ago, since I got no answer I supposed that no one will help me here.
I solved the problem but not all of it, I will explain it so that if someone else faced the same he will be able to read that.
When i posted my question I was on Win 10 ... till now still not working.
I tried again on win 7, here things got a little bit better, first of all Odin didn't detect the phone, but Windows showed that he is trying to install the drivers for my phone and failed (drivers with yellow icon on device manager).
I changed the ports and cable ... same problem.
I then downloaded last version of kies and at the end of installation I asked kies to update my usb drivers, restarted the PC and here odin detected my phone...
I did what I want to do in odin, and even if it seems to succeed am still stuck on Samsung logo
so i could root it with odin but my phone still on Samsung logo and dunno what to do.
anyway I will ask my question now in the thread you specified hoping to get some help, but i find it weird to work on win7 and not win 10..
how to tag the subject as resolved ? even if it's not really resolved cuz on win10 it still not working, but al least could make it works on win 7
