I want to have the control of which apps can access GPRS and which cannot. As soon as I switch on the Mobile data connection I want only certain apps to have access to GPRS. How can I do that?
you can turn off background data but some apps like bollywoodji will still user the data connection whenever it is active.
Try Droidwall from the market.

Sounds perfect!! Any other alternate apps which don't require rooting?
There should be enough firewalls on the market that don't require root. Although root is good .
Just search for Firewall and you shall find. Block the apps you need and you're done!
Cheers.

The apps that I saw in the market mostly needed rooting. Or only monitored calls and sms. Can u recommend and app?

what you are trying to do is to make android filter some of its outbound communications.
There are two ways:
1. revoking permission
2. change the router settings so that the app can't connect
1. is nearly impossible without errors. too bad.
2. is possible only with root. no root = no goodies. root your phone.
When I had Gingerbread 2.3.3 I used Droidwall to block any apps that had adverts inside it.
Now in Jelly Bean blocking an app still doesn't stop adverts showing inside of it. I know it's something to do with some program being able to access the internet because in Flight Mode there is no adverts.
How can you beat Jelly Bean and block the program that is detecting whether your device has internet connection or not? (It's not market feedback agent / play store, tried those already)
Thanks

I use AdAway
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.adaway&hl=en
This blocks via host files, and generally any ads within any Apps as well, since it's a system-wide block. Some ad-based referral links may be interfered though.

I tried something interesting. I set Droidwall to block ALL APPS, and the ads still show inside of apps lol. So I guess Jelly Bean has a different way of doing things, making it harder to block adverts.
Hmm I've downloaded Adfree, gets rid of some adverts in certain apps but not all. Might try AdAway in conjunction.
Any clues on how to track what app uses all this data? The Android OS process is reported as the culprit, but why? OS upgrades is set to wifi only, same with app updates.
App updates would be Google play not the android system you could try installing droid wall and block settings access to the internet
Hello,
I want to use a firewall app to block games and apps that don't need internet, but I dont want to go to the firewall app each time I install a new app
is there one that ask me automatically each time I install an app.
Thanks.
I use an AppLocker on my daughter's phone. It works great, but there is one problem it causes.
I need to keep her and others out of the settings so it's blocked. But I need to be able to allow her to add access points so she's not eating away our data plan.
Is there an App Locker that will allow this? Or is there an alternative Wifi manager that I could install and allow that would work even when settings is blocked?

Use a launcher like adw launcher then make a custom shortcut to the access point intent in the settings application.
click pick your activity or click on one of the settings shortcuts in the custom shortcut menu.
then lock the desktop so she cant get anywhere.
this will redcue the risk of her accessing settings and other applications without the need for the apps locker.
