Seeing as I didn't have time to wait, I chose Normal startup and nothing strange happened (so far). I realize this might have been an ultra noob question but I have no experience with using a phone outside of its 'regular' interface.
I still wasn't able to root it btw despite trying Kingoroot, Kingroot, Towelroot and iRoot. However, Fonelab recovery did a 'soft root' and was able to recover a bunch of contacts I hadn't used for years. All the other programs I tried couldn't do much without root.
The contact I was actually looking for though, could not be recovered by Fonelab, or anyway not with a name attached to it (I got a bunch of numbers which said unknown and would have to call all of them to find out). What I did instead was check my phone bill which specified where I sent my SMS messages. I remembered sending this contact a text (so SMS, not Whatsapp) on a particular date and time and was able to look up the number like that. So in the end a very non-technical solution which may help anyone who has deleted a contact they want back.

Installing 2 Whatsapp?

Hi, i just got the S2 a couple days ago and it's an amazing phone coming from an Iphone3g.
I was wondering if it is possible to install 2 whatsapp program on the phone? the reason for this is that i have 2 cell phone numbers, one personal and one work. i switch sim cards on weekends. i have separate work and personal friends, i don't want them to interchange and know about my other numbers.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
from what i understand
when u switch the sim card whatsapp starts again like u just installed it
Yes i understand whatsapp still works when install new sim card in the phone, but the phone number does not change with the sim card. That's my problem and i hope an expert here can let me know if it's possible to have 2 whatsapp or advise me an alternative solution.
You could try moving the apk to /system/app and then installing one from the market (/data/app). I've never tried anything like this so I'm not sure if it'd work.
Why don't you mail the developer...
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
So i guess its not possible to install 2 whatsapp, i'll email the developers to see if they have a solution.
Thank you everyone.
From experience....
I switched sims....and whatsapp thought i was still on my old number...until I was bothered to re-install it.
There have been a lot of whatsapp updates since then.. don;t know if it still works like that
I have 2 numbers and 2 phones and that works becuase each phone has its own gmail account therefore its own apps market. To have 2 WhatsApp on the same phone with different numbers probably might work if you put another gmail account in "My Accounts" and see if it can sign in and open its own apps store account but 2 WhatsApp on the same phone wont work if they share the same gmail/market account.
Ironmit,
Yes it's still the same, switching sim cards does not change whatsapp number.
Thank you everyone, i have emailed the developers and waiting for their reply. i will post results as soon as they get back to me in case anyone has the same problem as me.
Same problem need two whatsapps in one phone

Titanium Backup has a feature called App Profiles which basically allows you to have "two (or more) instances" of an app installed on your device. So you would create a new profile for WhatsApp and sign in with your 2nd number. Then if you want to go back to the 1st number, just switch back to the first profile. I'm not sure if that would work as I haven't tried it but that's an idea.
EDIT: I tried this out and it worked. You can even have a widget on your homescreen to easily and quickly switch between profiles.
Yes, the Titanium Backup App Profiles feature is a very good workaround, thanks for the tips halogen_guy.
Just one thing is when the profile is changed, the other phone number cannot receive messages. It would be great if we can make both numbers able to receive messages at the same time (dreaming).
Not complaining, at least I can use Whatsapp with my secondary phone number once in a while. I'm very happy now

No, i dont think it will work on non-rooted devices.
It needs Titanium backup to create multiple profiles and it NEEDS Root access

[Q] sms sniffing

Greetings to everyone
I have question about security. I have to know what options are there to find out sms conversation. I use Handcent sms in which I use privacy box with one person to determine that noone else except me would know what we are texting about. But one thing happened. Third person know what exactly we are texting about, even if I constantly deleted sms everyday. I can't imagine the way how he find out this.
I study software development so about security I know something. I know that handcent saves database of sms even if they are deleted or not. I used sqlite to find out what is exactly in the db and find out, that this is not right way how he find out. I also find out that in handcent autobackup option was checked, but noticed that when you delete sms, backup file changed and there were only sms i intented to be there. I also tried antivirus programs to find out if there is some kind of malware or trojan, nothing found.
So my question is: what options of finding out sms conversation are there? Even if third person can access mentioned mobile phone or not?
I will appreciate any good advice

Was it a known person? Or a random person? If he was a friend/person you know, then he either heard through the grape vine or got your phone or the person you were textings phone. I dont think there is a way to "hack" your phone from a computer and view the texts you sent. Unless he got them from your carrier.

Yes it is but would need to go through tones of red tape and have to be a Cop of some kind.
Most likely it was who ever you were texting. There are also other ways that it could happen. Apps that forward all texts to another number used to be a big one back in windows mobile days. Not sure if there is an app like that for android

It's probably the problem that this person has a friend which works for vodafone which this phone uses. Forwarding all texts is not possible i think, because this person would catch up on this earlier..

There used to be an app that could be installed that did all this with the user even knowing about it. Once installed it was hidden away and it never showed that the messages would be forwarded. It was a proof of concept app that someone made for learning. If they had someone working for the company it would have to be a higher up to have access to the cached data bases the company keeps which are encrypted.
I have a feeling the OP was ratted out by the one they were texting.

Ok, thank you for your advice. So if there is hidden app registered as service it can be seen through logcat when I intent to send sms, am I right?
About the company, this person works here on higher places, dont realy know what is his position some kind of IT specialist, gonna investigate this..

[Q] Spyware

Hi,
First off, hello all, and I love the apps/info this community has made available to us less technologically gifted android users. I had a question regarding an app I found preinstalled on my phone. I bought it from my local carrier (Etisalat UAE - the firm that famously made some blackberry spyware 2 years ago), and there is an app called Etisalat (unremoveable) and doesnt show in the application manager. ANyway, via another app i got its info, and it has some unexpected permissions. I just wanted to know if this is normal for all carriers, or if this is Etisalat up to their spying again.
The phone is an unrooted GT-I9300, running ICS (with normal samsung modifications), kernel is 3.0.15-782020-user. From dialing *#1234#, i get the following:
AP: I9300XXBLFB
CP: I9300XXLFB
CSC: I9300OJVBLF3
Permissions that worry me include:
"record audio, take pictures and videos"
"sending emails to guests without owners' knowledge"
"read calendar events plus confidential information"
"read social stream, write browser history"
"run sysscope" (what is this btw? google wasnt very helpful)
"read email attachments, read sms"
"act as an account authenticator, manage the accounts list"
Any info would really help (I couldnt find anything similar when I searched) put my mind to rest. If it is spyware, any good threads to remove it (its not carrier ID, I checked - but etisalat does make its own spyware)?
Thanks

I don't know what is this app but we can try first to freeze it. If you have problem, unfreeze this app. If not, you can remove it.
To do that, your need root your device first : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
And use TitaniumBackup (available on Google Play) to freeze/unfreeze/remove apps.
Personally i would use adb to pull the .apk in question and post here for someone to examine it's guts, or examine it yourself.
Some info could be got by unpacking the .apk and then using some java decompiler. The code might be obfuscated, but i think the main idea of the app would be visible..
Thanks guys - will try this.
If I were you, I'd do a wipe and flash a stock rom with Odin. You sure won't miss the app
Hahaha etisalat lol download titanium backup and freeze the app or remove it or change the rom

Well, I changed the ROM to Android Revolution - unfortunately the app was still there (???).
Anyway, so I used nobloat to freeze the app. The phone seems to be working fine without it. After giving it a few more hours, will backup and delete it and see what happens.

if it is restored after a new rom install, it's probably in /preload partition. Apps/data get installed automatically based on your CSC from that partition.
If you used an AOKP/AOSP rom i don't think it would get auto-installed. Or if you have root, you can format the /preload partition using adb shell.

SMALL TRICK FOR HIDING "last seen" on WhatsApp.

Hey Friendz can we really hide "last seen" on WhatsApp..??
.
.
.
Yes there is a small trick, which i found out yesterday..
For me i have a samsung galaxy 5 and no internet on my phone(but it also works on phone data plan) i use Wifi, the trick is for me to have wifi on so i can recieve messages and once i do, i just turn off my wifi and then open the whatsapp message. after that you can even type a reply if you want send it, close whatsapp completly and start your wifi again. it wel then send the message but you wont have come online, my friends still think its freaky that i was last online 3 days ago while im still talking to them the only downside is that you yourself then cant see when someone else was last online cause to get that information you need to be in the message and online. hope this helps.

yes that you can just take another phone add a contact that you want to see and you can spy their status without being seen! I'm surprised you didn't figure this out obviously you can do many tricks for this. one is saving multiple data profiles for whatsapp and it requires root
another way for anyone, stock unrooted phone, is installing and uninstalling or clear data, change sim etc etc

you need to use titanium backup, make a backup of whatsapp. Then delete whatsapp data and create a new account with a new phone number.
You might need to move the old backup from /sdcard/TitaniumBackup saved as .tar.gz to some other folder and then you can swap whenever you need to change profile.
I hope you can understand what I mean!
maybe I'll try it
thanks! It's much better than the previous method!

Lg VuTalk getting shut down

Yeah I had only used it once when I first got the phone. But a co worker said he saw a pop up when he tried to use it so it made me curious. Thought I'd spread the word of what I found.

Google Play should have installed an app that will delete the data.
The service (as stated) is going offline July 1st, so that may be why you can still see things.

It did, but that button in a call still remains as does the non functional Vutalk Uninstall app. Very odd...
Hey, sorry for hijacking- but have any of you been able to get a Vibrate On Call Connection (as opposed to an outgoing call dialed) feature to work? I've tried everything outside of flashing a new ROM & basically the consensus is that it's an issue with LG itself.
I only tried to use Vutalk once as I only my mother had it. The app just uninstalled itself a few minutes ago so I searched and found this thread.
If you're rooted you can get rid of the remnants with Xposed (not sure which module it is, though)
Edit: Found it, it's G2 TweaksBox => Calls Tweaks
lg vutalk went of lg server is there any way to reactivate this personally??
Hey all,
I'm actually really upset that Lg took away VUTALK.. it really ruined my day when I found out perhaps it was one of reasons I decided to go with Lg in the first place.. is there anyone that can tell me if there's anyway around this.. I really want to make this feature work again and cannot understand Why everyone felt it was so unbeneficial.. it was very useful to me.. please give me any advice I'm not exactly tech savvy when it comes to this stuff.. but I was thinking if servers down then there's no way for me to go around it?
I not use it never...anyway, i uninstalled VuTalk
