Flashing FTF without USB, its broken - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Soooo my phone, broke the USB port out, taking half the board with it, so it couldnt get soldered back since it didnt have the board to support the sides, it would break off again.
It works, but now i wanted to update the firmware and found it i cant since Flashtool is USB only, is there a way to flash the FTF from the phone itself? Its rooted and has all the usual stuff that guides usually make u install (teamwinrecovery) or should i update through the stock method (official download through the phone) but then, how would i root the phone from official firmware? Do i lose it? Can i regain it without USB? Thanks in advance

Ok its been a while so i had no idea, i updated myself and now im in 5.1.1 with root and recovery, i just flashed a zip from one guide. Now im looking at 6.0.1, problem is theres a always a step about using busybox and install.bat from the recovery folder.
Is this to install the TWRP again? Is it only installed through the PC and USB? Or would my old recovery remain from before? Or is there another way to install the TWRP?

[Q] Have I bricked my C6806?

Hi everyone,
I just bought a brand new Z Ultra C6806. I plugged it into my computer, installed the My Companion software, and then proceeded to root the device via the Chinese root, which seemed to work just fine. I then tried to unlock the bootloader with Flash Tool, but couldn't get Flash Tool to recognize my device. It kept on saying that I needed to install drivers. I'm doing this on a windows computer, and I already navigated to the drivers folder and installed the z ultra drivers.
I then got fed up with that and saw the thread that let you flash a recovery with a locked bootloader. So I followed those instructions and had a working CWM and TWRP. Except then I wiped data and system and flashed the CarbonRom custom rom, and now my phone won't boot at all.
I'm hopeful that everything is not lost since when I hold volume up and plug my phone into my computer I see a blue LED, which I have gathered means that it is successfully still entering fastboot mode?
How do I get Flash Tool to recognize my device? And is it possible to unlock the C6806 bootloader or have I been deeply mistaken all along?
Thanks for any help
[HOW-TO] Unbrick your XZU
You can use method A. Read carefully how to install the drivers and do not use a USB 3.0 port.

so what you've done is to try and flash a ROM with a locked bootloader. You've found out that it wont....
You just need to use 'flashtool' and flash a FTF file.
But like you said before you'll need to ensure drivers are installed properly. flashtool will need to say:
'device connected in fastboot mode' or
'device detected in flash mode'
Download the latest version of flashtool. Then when you select the type of device, you can select Xperia Z Ultra.
and make sure that ADB is installed (windows will detect new device has been plugged in, and if it wont install drivers, you will need to tell it where to find them)

Reinstalled flashtool drivers for z ultra and flashmode and fastboot, pointed my windows drivers interface to the driver file I downloaded from the sony unlock bootloader website and still didn't get anything on my laptop.
Did the exact same things on my desktop and everything is working fine now, flashtool recognized my device, flashed a Sony FTF, unlocked bootloader successfully, playing with CM now.
Still not sure why this is the case, but alls well that ends well I suppose, thanks.
install flashtools driver you can find it in Flashtools folder. PC need driver when xzu in fastboot mode.If you use USB 3.0 like me try different usb slot.

Hi Guys,
My first Sony Phone (previous Samsung User). I have the US Version C6806 LTE model. I have a similar question. I have unlocked my bootloader successfully via Sony's website. I want to be able to install TWRP and backup original ROM before applying custom ROMs. Doesn't look like there is a root available for this phone model yet? I am on firmware 14.1.B.2.257. My questions are:
1 - Is there a TWRP image I can flash on my model via fastboot without having root? Then boot into TWRP and backup the ROM?
2 - If not can I flash any of the images that I seen on XDA via fastboot that include the Root and TWRP in them? Or will those not work with .257 firmware?
3- If none of the options above work can I download an FTF image (older version) that I can root and use TWRP and if so which image do you recommend that would work with my phone model and LTE network on AT&T?
Thanks for all your help and sorry for all the questions I am a noob with Sony Phones. I did research here and seems most of the threads and images are NOT for C6806 which I have.
I think all tyour questions are answered in various threads in the X-ZU forum...
You have gone about it all ass about face, you should have downgraded to .532 then rooted with kingo (looks like is is safe?). Once rooted you should of then backed up your TA partition in case you ever need the phone serviced.
I dont know if TWRP is working well in any of the boot.img but CMR works fine (except for the date of the backups)
any of the firmware/ftf/ROMs will work with any of the Ultras as far as I know

I flashed a .532 firmware still no safe root method from what I can tell. Looks like I need to flash an earlier version or a FTF hopefully that contains root and custom recovery. I will keep reading and researching. Thanks for the help.
do you want to end up on a rooted stock firmware?
as you have already unlocked the boot loader you can just flash one of the kernel/boot img with recovery and then flash whatever rom you want from there...
I also run into Cyanogen Recovery and have trouble going back to FlashTool with my chromebook. I am a bit panicky, but your post is comforting and ensuring.
I got the C6806 xperia z ultra in year 2014. I have been using it as a home primary PC.
My blog about this amazing device, is http://nocomputerbutphone.blogspot.com/ .

No operating system

Yes, like many before me I have made that mistake of ticking the system box when wiping my Sony Xperia z2 via twrp.
The issue that I face is this:
I no longer have a backup so cannot revert back. My phone is no longer rooted either so when trying to install my rooted firmware, twrp tells me to install supersu. When doing this the phone simply turns off.
I'm sure the simpliest way to get back up and running would be to flash a stock unrooted firmware in twrp, however I can't seem to find the relevant file to do this as also understand a ftf file cannot be flashed in twrp and must be done via flash tool.
I have downloaded a stock ftf firmware for my phone (D6503)
and flash tool, what I thought to be the latest version. ( 0.9.19.0 )
I have installed ticked all relevant boxes to install the drivers which windows tells me was installed correctly. However when connecting my phone to flash tool with volume down held, tells me no drivers are installed.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm slowly pulling my hair out
Adam
Root isn't needed to install new system if you're already running twrp, so maybe you just have to use proper recovery.
And about the drivers. Are you on Windows 8 or higher? Because then you have to launch your pc without driver signature to properly install them.
Also how did you install them (did you use the ones included with flashtool)?
One more thing. The firmware version you've downloaded is pretty strange, make sure you've downloaded the correct one. It should rather start with something like 23.A......

Thanks for the reply.
Sorry I didn't make myself clear, when I referred to the download I was on about the flash tool. My firmware is as you say 23.a etc. Its lollipop
I'm currently on windows 7. Yeah I went into the drivers that were provided with the program and installed them from there. I've still got the original file I used when rooting my device but when I wipe the cache etc and then flash the file, it installs fine but gets stuck in boot up. Just the purple background moving about.
I'm fairly sure it says my boot loader is locked too now as when I wiped everything I was also returned to stock, so not sure how to go about that or if that is my issue.
Thanks again
Try to uninstall and reinstall drivers, and reboot the system after each step.. If it fails, borrow a laptop from ur friend and try again
Does anyone have a link to a flash tool they know works with D6503?
Thanks

[Z2,Z3] Root and recovery stock 5.1.1 264 ROM no data loss - proper easy way

Rooting and romming Sony devices is a little harder than most android devices, some things work a little different. The scattered info doesn't make this any easier either. I had to find this out the hard way, softbricked my Xperia in the process, but I finally did it. I see that there still are people that wish to root stock 5.1.1 and that there are no unified proper instructions to do this so here is my process and guide. Good luck.
There are many ways to do this, but it includes flashing your Xperia to earlier firmware then rooting and installing the recovery and then flashing back the newest firmware, so I made this little guide to make things easier for Sony newcomers. This process should be compatible with Z1, Z2 and Z3(c) - but ofcourse its made for Z2, for Z1 and Z3 download recovery files for your model respectively.
You won't loose any of your data on your stock ROM if you do this correctly.
You'll need a Windows PC, 7, 8.1, 10. (Mac and Linux are also supported)
1. Root your Z with Kingroot.apk v4.6 and v4.8 work flawlessly. Just download and install as normal apk and hit the big blue button. You have to have internet connection for this to work. It will root your Z automatically after cca. 2m.
Kingroot app is basically a super su app from a different developer. Congrats, you now have root.
2. To install a recovery do not use any flashing apps by TWRP or similar, it wont work. We will use XDZR.
XZDR is Xperia Z Dual Recovery, its basically Philz recovery and TWRP recovery flashed together. You enter Philz holding vol up and TWRP holding vol down when powering up your xperia. * Search for NUT's dual recovery for more info.
Download the recovery from here:
http://nut.xperia-files.com/path/XZDualRecovery
(Download the correct .zip for your Xperia model).
3. Download the. zip to your PC.
4. Connect your phone via USB after you have enabled USB debugging on your xperia. If you have correct Sony drivers installed your PC will recognize your device and a dialog will pop up on your phone (about allowing USB debugging from this PC). Allow the access.
5. Unpack the zip you downloaded to a random folder on your PC. Here run the install.bat if you're on a Win PC. Bat will run and here you just choose the first option, type 1 and follow the on screen instructions, keep an eye on your phone, it will pop up a couple of yes - no dialogs. Allow the access and ADB access and wait, it will be fast.
When you reboot you will see a green LED light up while SONY splash is shown, this is when you hold up or down for one of the two recoveries.
Down is for TWRP and up is for Philz.
6. Download superSU from here:
https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/
Boot to system again and now you can unroot your phone trough Kingroot app (general settings) and then reboot to recovery again and flash the file from this link, you will get the super su app and super su binaries and this way you're fully rooted and will have dual recovery for your full flashing pleasure.
* Remember that you first need to unroot and uninstall Kingroot app and then flash Super su, otherwise you risk a bootloop or just not functional root access.
* Do not flash newer TWRP or any recovery or youll loose your recovery.
* I am not responsible if something goes wrong with your device.
And thats it, you have your data intact, stock 5.1.1 ROM, fully functional root access with super su and two recoveries, intact BL and DRM keys and you can flash almost anything that supports LB (locked bootloader).
Hey.
I have a few questions.
Does installing recovery void the warranty? Can the XZDualRecovery be uninstalled easily? Can I still update to Marshmallow via official update when it comes out when I have recovery installed on my phone?
Thanks!

I think that Sony does void warranty if you do an "unauthorized software changes" and changing software in any other way than trough OTA is unauthorized by Sony, so yes. But you can completely restore your device to factory state by flashing an official FTF image trough flashtool and restore Sonys recovery and basically get your warranty back.
If you follow the above steps installation of XZDR is quite easy and fast.
You will be able to update to official MM by flashing MM FTF image trough flashtool and restore your phone to "official" software state. But with XZD recovery you will be able to flash leaked MM from beta program even sooner and easier.
This guide does not unlock your BL and does nothing irreversible to your phone * providing you do everything correctly.
Thanks for answering! Much appreciated!

Rooting with this method wont unlock your boot loader so there is no need for that, your DRM keys wont be touched.

You can leave it as is, you will have full root functionality. Of course you can also update binaries to have up to date bug fixes and security patches, update trough normal method works fine.
@5ageman Hi. Thanks for the tutorial. I m a noob in this rooting stuff. Last night i rooted my phone Xperia Z2 5.1.1 using kingroot bcos i was scared of rooting with some other steps and bricking my phone. But then i realized that xposed wont install unless i have custom recovery. But i m quiet confused with few things related to root even after reading so many posts. So just need to know what exactly recovery is. Like when i restart my phone and then press vol up or down key what will exactly happen? Is this something like safe mode and some other mode in laptops??

Recovery is actually closest to BIOS in PC terms although its much more. Xperia Z2 has no recovery by default, you'll need to flash it manually. See step 2. And only then you can eter recovery. By pressing vol down when the green LED lights up you will enter TWRP a custom recovery made by Team Win Recovery Project. Nothing will happen if you do nothig, you wont accidentaly wipe or brick your Z2. If unsure what to do next just tap the reboot button and then system to reboot to system as nothing happened. Go step by step, no hurry.
@5ageman thanks alot for ur answer. Now my doubt is clear.
But i have few more questions related to ur tut.
1- i have already rebooted my phone a number of times after rooting it. Like for some other purpose and not for recovery or super su. So will the tut work for me as i read somewhere that one need not restart the phone after rooting using kingroot and install recovery directly. Or if it was for some other device i dont remember.
2 - According to the end of step 5 and step 6, does that mean that i have to download super su from chainfire while i m still in recovery mode? And once agn in the system after uninstalling kingroot and rebooting in recovery do i have to install SuperSU in the recovery mode? If yes then how?
3- last question. Entering recovery is just vol down button or power + vol down both.
Once again sorry for such basic questions but i m completely new in the world of rooting plus i want to make sure i know what i m doing.
Thanks for ur patience. Appreciate.

1. You cannot install recovery directly from the system on Z2 like on other phones, Z2 has no recovery partition. This can only be done with unlocked bootloader. Just make sure you have a working root access with Kingroot and USB debugging enabled when you connect your Z2 to a PC.
2. Download superSU from chainfire while still in system, then reboot to recovery and flash it trough recovery. It's a flashable zip. Before booting to recovery unroot your phone trough Kingroot app. SuperSU zip will flash su binaries and the app to system partition automatically and will root your phone again. Rooting trough Kingroot is done only to flash the recovery, then its deleted.
3. After you successfully install tge recovery when you power on your Z2 it will vibrate and flash green LED on sony bios logo. Then you hold down vol down key until led flashes purple. Afterward it will boot to recovery.

1- no i didnt mean in the system. What i read was that when u root with kingroot u r nt suppose to reboot until u install recovery. Otherwise it might cos prbs and nt install SuperSU.
2- What does flashable exactly mean. Is it nt just installing? I dload the superSU from chainfire while in the system and install in the recovery, right? Where will i find the zip to install it? (sorry... Had to ask)
3- i think i got that...i ll knw that exactly when i try it...lol

1. You wont face any issues if you reboot, but you dont have to. Just plug your phone to PC while your phone is in android. Yes you download in system and then install - flash in recovery by tapping "install" and then you navigate to supersu.zip and select it and then swipe to flash it. The supersu.zip will be there where you download it, most likely on internal storage in download folder.
2. Flashable means its installed trough recovery - its flashed as opposed to being installed normally in android system.
So is it safe to root my Z2 with this? I have 15.1.1 264 stock rom, is this safe?

Bootloop at startup logo due to XZrecovery getting trashed

Long story - Tried to apply the latest Marshmallow rooted package for D6503 on my 6502 that was already rooted with XZ dual recovery. It installed successfully, was rooted too...but I forgot to add the patch that would fix the radio not working. So I try to reboot to recovery...and that doesn't work anymore. I tried installing TWRP recovery from the manager app, but it wouldn't reboot. Then I ran the XZ recovery installer externally, and now my phone is ****ed. Stuck at an infinite boot loop.
At this stage the only thing I can access is flashtool and fastboot, and since my bootloader is locked I can't flash a recovery that way (nor do I want to permanently lose DRM keys/camera quality as I've heard happens with unlocking the bootloader). I have a memory card and I used the option to disable loading the recovery specified on the XZ thread by adding a 'donotload' file on the sd card.
Still no use - I get a Sony logo for about 5 seconds, the screen goes dark and back to the same. At this point probably my recovery is screwed up or non existent and a bad situation has gone worse with the bootloop.
What can I try now?
@KaiserSnorezay
XZDR is still not compatible with MM, that's why you got a bootloop...
Also you can't install the "regular" TWRP with twrp manager on a LB as there is no recovery partition... it won't work and probably will mess your phone in the process.
The solution is to flash any KK / LP .ftf with flashtool (i would wipe everything when flashing as i have backups of my data/apps) , root it with kingroot or any other method you like, install xzdr for KK/LP and finally reboot to recovery and install the latest MM prerooted rom from niaboc which already has root&recovery (not xzdr btw) included. Since you have D6502 don't forget to install the baseband patch after the rom again
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/development/rom-official-6-0-1-23-5-0-486-beta-t3336770
Just did it exactly this way yesterday on my friends d6503 (minus the d6502 patch obviously) had 0 troubles MM, root and recovery working perfectly.
Thanks, will try this today. Is wiping data required or can i get by by just flashing the older one?

Weird, after you have your phone rooted it should be simple to install xzdr... just enable usb debugging in the phone and make sure you have the adb drivers correctly installed in your pc.
Download the latest xzdr from nut's thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261606 ) unzip it and run install.bat . After a successful install the phone should reboot to twrp automatically and it's done.
Okay, I fixed it..using Flashfire! No idea why the recovery didn't work earlier, but now finally I'm on Marshmallow. Thanks for the help!

Try what ptmaniac suggested - flash an older FTF that can be rooted (more recent ones can't), root it, install recovery and then flash the newest build.
You'll have to improve your Google-fu to find a suitable firmware and a root technique for it.

Hi guys, i got my H9 yesterday and because i thought i read enough on this forums i wanted to unlock it then install TWRP and install superSU to gain root access and stick with the stock firmware.
Unlocking went perfectly fine, phone booted to OS, than i flashed twrp 3.1.1-1 as advertised here and made a factory reset. Phone was stuck in bootloop for unknown reason.
I made several wipes and somehow managed to check all boxes in the wipe menu which erased the whole OS.
Now i read here that others have the "no OS" problem too but because i still have all unlocked fastboot and twrp i wanted to ask which method is best to flash back the original FW.
Which stock ROM is safe to install? i have european H9 is STF-L09C432B170 the right one for me?
Which method is the best to install it? Copy the 3 zips to internal stoagre via OTG device and install it out of twrp? I read that there is also a force method where users can push vol up, vol down and power simultaneously and enter the huawei install force mode.
I am quite sad that the phone was stuck in bootloop after twrp install and still dont know what caused it. When i install it from twrp there are 3 zips: update, data full public , hw eu. In which order do they have to e installed and is one of them overwriting the TWRP recovery?
Please give me a short hint/procedure, im quite afraid that i cant get my phone back to work and it is brand new. I dont know what caused the unsolvable bootloop.
Best regards and many thanks
Hi.
Check this:

This help you.
Regards
thanks for the hint but i cant find a solution for me there.
ut this
i copied the 3 .zip files to internal today but TWRP doenst allow me to write them it fails with "write err errno 9"
then i tried to copy the update.pp in DLOAD folder on micro sd but this is not possible because filesize is over 2gb. i tried to format micro sd with twrp to exfat but it till doesnt work. please give me a little hint what to do im completely desperate about the situation.
Today i installed Huawei Multitool and extracted the .img file out of the update.app files, i was able to flash all 4, system, boot, recovery and cust.
Now the rec. menu is back to stock and everything got installed but the phone still isnt booting. i think it is because i missed the userdata.img which i cant find anywhere.
Other users here have the same problem. Is there a firmware package which includes all 5 .img data?
Best regards
i found the official huawei service full repair firmware with all necessary files for unbrick (system, cust, recovery, userdata, boot) flashed them via fastboot but stil device is "hanging" after the warning message that its unlocked. i think it is because i wiped vendor data in twrp but i cant flash vendor.img in fastboot. it is included in the fw package but cant be transfered to phone via fastboot. it stops at part 1/2 because the filesize allowd is around 470mb max but the extracted file has a size of 670. anyone know what to do?
Best regards
You need to go via the Rebrand way with no rebrand. I had the same problem and was trying to use the multitool without success. The oeminfo can be flashed alternatively if it fails during the HWOTA process.

ok i download all the folders with the .bat file. Then i download C432B150 from the czech site and add it to the update folder. Than i rename the 3 files accoding to the manual and run the .bat file but without rebranding right?
Des this tool any different than the HuaweiMultiTool or fastboot with flash command?
Best regards
I treid out HWOTA, the first step installing twrp is successful than i disattach usb cable as described and enter twrp. Then it says in twrp i have to connect again and press enter but then the bat file stops and doenst go on. i dont come to the point where i can choose rebrand or flash firmware.
Whats wrong here?
edit: i saw in the .sh file that the script executes wait_adb but my phone is not entering adb mode as it seems when in main screen of twrp. is this normal or do i have to set it manually in twrp
best regards
I was able to install the B130 now via 3 button recovery. Now im on B130 but cant update elsewhere. Also the 2 capacitive buttons are not working. Bootloader is locked again. Everything is stock and the phone runs great. When i update with the 3 buton method from external sd, which firmware should i use? i tried B150 full OTA but it aborts after 5% with an error. Do i only need to get a small OTA package now?
How can i put my cap. buttons back to work? Too bad only the 3 button method worked to recover the phone.
Best regards and many thanks.
I did the HWOTA with b120 firmware and then used firmware finder to update to b150.
The bug with capacitive buttons is present till Oreo. I use the home button gestures anyways.
Hope it helps.
ok, thats bad but they worked with the initial revision of b130 and b150 when i downloaded it OTA. Is this something like a fuse like.knox at samsung which happens at custom flashing?

the HWOTA method doesnt work, the batch file gets stuck after connecting the phone in twrp back to computer. in script it says wait_adb but it is not recognized somehow.
do u know a solution? anotherone here got that problem too.
im very afraid of that, i read here that everything related to twrp 3.1.1-0 and 3.1.1-1 is problematic a lot of people cant boot after installing twrp and can wipe whtever they want the phone never boots fully
whats the difference in the B130/B120 the phone came from huawei and the version flashed via tools? when i got it everything worked
i have this version.
ok so install twrp have frq and bootloader unlocked and then do backup out of recovery? with your file? can you provide download link? is this then a zip file?
I want to solve the thread and how i solved problem.
The B130 service firmware by huawei could be installed via 3 button method, than i was able to go up to the newest B180 via firmwarefinder and DNS method but with not working cap. buttons and flash etc.
Yesterday i installed TWRP 3.1.1-1(temporary) via HWOTA.zip method (ireplaced the older twrp in recovery folder) and successfully installed B120 and got the buttons etc working again. Then installed root and now system works fine and is rooted. My mistake was to install twrp over B130 or B150 which i downloaded OTA at the first day i got the phone. I tested this yesterday to install TWRP along with B150 and unlocked bootloader, infinite bootloop again. With B120 the TWRP 3.1.1-1 works out of the box without any loops.
The 2 trouble solvers where B130 service firmware and HWOTA with B120.
The external SD had to be inserted in card reader on PC because of the large filesize of the B130.
I would recommend to everyone before starting to play with the H9 to move the B130 folders to phone while it is still accessible. When everything bricks like in my case and u still have twrp than you can go to twrp main screen and connect phone to computer to rename the folder with B130 to "dload" and arrange update.app accordingly on PC or in TWRP file manager.
Can i set this topic to [SOLVED] myself?
Best regards
