Hey guys,
im coming from Z1 dev and now my girlfriend bought a Z2 ... on Z1 we are rooting the oldest firmwares to backup TA with TA-Backup ... then we can open the bootloader and restore TA at any time ...
now i'm wondering how you guys do it at Z2?! i read that some guys have open booloaders, but what about TA?! lost forever?! or backuped with another method?! or ith unlocking the BL not wiping the TA anymore?!
would like to open and root the Z2, but not without saving the TA ...

backup using the same way
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292598
like he said on the thread, try to make a backup of TA & it will tell you if your device is supported or not.
remember, to backup TA, root is needed.
currently no exploit found yet to root locked bootloader.
conclusion : cant backup TA at the moment.
So effectivly we are waiting for a flashable ftf firmware with root?
Then we can use the TA backup tool, and then unlock bootloader and flash custom kernels with recovery and hence roms? ( I'm new to the xperia way)
Z2
yeah i think so ...
what i see is,k that we can't backup TA because we can't root without wiping TA at the moment ...
if we get a flashable FTF with rooted firmware for locked BL then we could flash it (excluding TA) and backup our TA .. after that we could open the BL, install a custom kernel with custom recovery and flash a custom rom ...
BUT ... we need root first .. that is what i wanted to know, thank you guys

Hello guys, I want to buy this tablet, but I heard about that if you unlock the bootloader and you will lose your DRM key, so some greart function can't work. I learn that there is a tool can backup and restore the TA partition for Z3C. Is there a tool can do the same for Z4 tablet? Or is there a method can restore lost functionality on unlocked Z4 tablet? Thank you very much.
No there is no way atm to backup ta partitions on z3+/z4/Tz4 and all z5 series until a kernel exploit is found and working on this units.

Hi, thanks a lot, hoping the kernel exploit is found soon.
Just to add to this post, I am thinking of buying this tablet because I have had a good experience with pollux windy but not being able to backup and restore the ta partitions is certainly a big strike against me purchasing this tablet.
Can you please tell me if it is at all possible to root the device and install Xposed without unlocking the boot loader then?

Hello,
I have been reading the XDA forums for a while now, but it is until now that I have a question that I can't find an answer to.
I want to backup my TA, however I see that in order to do that I need to root.
I found that in order to root I need to unlock the BL, thus losing the DRM keys which is the reason why I want to back up.
What do you recommend? I don't want to lose my data on the phone, is there any way to downgrade to a firmware that can be rooted without unlocking BL without losing my data?
Or, is there a way to backup TA without rooting?
Thanks for your help!

The only way now to downgrade to Lollipop is by flashing firmware through Flashtool. And yes you will lose your data. But you can make a backup or not? Flash the Lolipop firmware. Root your device and backup your TA partition. After you can unlock the bootloader. And unlocking the BL will wipe your data.

I didn't try yet, but why not. You just need to be rooted. If you try, write us a feedback, so we will now, is it posibble or not.
I thing that if you restore TA partition, this will relock your bootloader. Note. If you restore backup TA, you need to be on stock firmware and kernel before that.

This please, I haven't done all the process because I read so many conflicting ideas of what will happen:
Warranty Voided - This one I mind, but is not a deal breaker
Camera will not longer work - I love the Sony camera functions, such as AR fun, Motionshot, etc and I wouldn't want to lose them if I have to use another Camera app.
Camera quality will be very poor but I can still use Sony camera functions
Camera quality will be very poor and I won't be able to use Sony camera functions
I won't be able to use any Sony software such as Music, Video, Album, Sony Xperia Care, etc
Are they true or not? I have tried to find the answers myself, but the more I look the more confusing it gets

Warranty Voided - Depends on where you live. In some country's, it does not affect the warranty. But if you backup the TA partition, you can always restore it, and relock the bootloader, so the warranty stays.
Camera will not longer work - Stock camera is working without any problems, and you can use all the apps, such as AR Fun, Motionshot, etc.
Camera Quality will be very poor but I can still use Sony camera functions - To be honest, on Lollipop, i saw the difference on camera photos, when it was unlocked or when it was locked. It only affects the low light photos, more digital noise. In daylight, the photos were the same. But the difference in low light photos was very small. On Marshmallow, i tried the same. Compared the photos on unlocked and on locked BL., i couldn't notice any difference. In low light also, photos were the same, the same amount of digital noise. When i will have more time, i will post the photos, compared, so everybody can see.
Camera quality will be very poor and I won't be able to use Sony camera functions- As i said before, you can use the stock camera and all the apps in it.
Won't be able to use any Sony software such as Music, Video, Album, Sony Xperia Care, etc - You can use all those apps, only you will not be able to use- The Lounge, TrackID, and i don't know what else, i didn't test everything. Those apps you mentioned will work without any problem. You will only Not get the software updates in the Settings.

Thanks a lot! That clears most of my questions. If I understood correctly then if I'm in Marshmallow and want to backup the DRM keys I should downgrade to Lollipop, root the phone without unlocking the bootloader there, then backup the DRM keys by doing a backup of the TA partition.
Then I can unlock the bootloader, flash a pretooted Marshmallow, right?

That's right. Or you can wait until somebody finds a way to root (Marshmallow) on locked bootloader. But, if you have time and patience, than downgrade to lollipop and do it now.
I bought a Xperia X recently, and I hope to get it unlock and rooted. But it seems that unlock will erase the TA partition and lost some features permanently. So I want to know if there's a way to get temproot(such as iovyroot on z5, so I can make the partition backup).
By the way, does the backup function in the settings menu backup the application data, but not only the APKs in /data/app?

There's currently no way to back up ta keys on any of the x range as ivy root unfortunately only works on a lollipop kernel before December15 I think it is which no x range has releasing on mm, I'd love to be able to back up my xa ta keys so I can root via unlocked bootloader as doubtful there'll ever be a locked Bootloader root solution in the future alot don't seem to care about loosing ta keys due to the drm fix but I would like a way to go back to stock if the camera sucks or I need my warranty. Not sure about the Sony back up app think it's just data it backs up.

Hi,
I'm planing to buy new phone (currently an owner of a broken Z3 compact).
My question (I can't find any sticky thread on this topic thus asking) for this phone is:
- is it possible to root and keep DRM?
- does unlocking bootloader lose DRM keys?
- does the DRM affect camera quality (for z3 compact it did)?
I also saw some thread of DRM fix (https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-x/development/kernel-drm-fix-nougat-t3530849). Does this mean that after aplying such a fix the DRM is back?
The thing is that I like to have custom ROM (removed all the unnecessary things thus lighter version of original firmware) while keeping all the qualities of Sony phones.; like everyone
Thanks in advance!

you could root and keep DRM, but you have to backup DRM first (before unlocking bootloader) while on marshmallow through Dirtycow exploit: https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/universal-dirtycow-based-ta-backup-t3514236
as you said, unlocking bootloader does wipe the TA partition (where DRM keys are stored) and worsen camera quality (irc, at the point you cannot use stock camera).
this way, before unlocking you'll have a TA partition dump you can restore anytime.
then you unlock BL, flash a custom kernel + super user with a custom recovery (likely twrp), restore TA partition and you should be done.
as for DRM Fix, i believe it's about ignoring some errors which are showed when using stock roms and an unlocked device (i.e. you cannot use stock camera and some other features).

Thanks.
So basically after the installation of any custom romantic I just restore TA partition (I need to do a backup prior to doing anything else).
Does this als work with custom kernel?

restoring TA partition should work no matter what the kernel is.
in fact, you could just unlock BL and restore TA partition, but it would be pointless then (i mean unlocking BL and not rooting).
a "custom" kernel is required in order to get root access

Great. Thank you.
I get he phone in 2days so until then I have to find everything.
I restored TA partition after rooting but now the phone will not boot. It displays an error about failing verification and will not boot properly. How to get around this?
