Native CalDAV/CardDAV support? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Lately I have been wondering why Android still does not have native support for CalDAV & CardDAV, when both have been the de-facto open standard for contacts and calendar sync for years. Is there no native support because Google wants it to make it more difficult to use alternatives to their services? (In my case: NextCloud/ownCloud, which I can add right away even to an old Iphone, but still do not work with android out of the box without something like DAVDroid) Or are there plans to integrate it into future versions?

What's the problem with installing an app? Android has a native API for contacts and calendars, so I guess they can't be accused of making it "difficult". They probably just don't want to make it "too easy".
One could also ask why 99,9% of app developers don't support APK distribution but require users to use GApps & Play Store …

Which is not answering my question whether it is planned to have native support for CalDAV/CardDAV.
CardDAV / CalDAV are open standards for data exchange just like IMAP, NTP, SMTP and so on. It would be only natural for android to support them

[Q] S/MIME support for Android

Could someone explain why there is no support for S/MIME in Android?
Is this because libraries are missing, no intererst in the community, etc?
Are there plans to add SMIME to Andoid (it is supported on Windows Mobile and BlackBerry).
Full support would be great (both creating and receiving SMIME messages), but for now I would settle for just the receiving part, thus being able to read received SMIME encoded messages sent by Outlook/Exchange.
I would really like to send my emails signed (using Exchange/Outlook), but have stopped since both iPhone and Android are incapable of reading those signed messages. I know I can set an option in Outlook to include a non signed text message for non SMIME capable devices, but attachements are then not visible, as they are always SMIME encoded..

On your android phone I go to
Settings --> Accounts & Sync
From there you click add account at the bottom, then click corporate.
On the next screen, type in your email address and password be sure to use the full [email protected]
optionally check the send from this account by default
then make it look like this picture obviously changing things as they apply to you

hope this will hope you.
Yeah Great answer
My wife have at the moment exactly this kind of situation...
Her company policy says that they are using s/mime protocol and even if I am doing whatsoever ---> android phone is not support that smime and I cannot get working mail/calendar/contacts in native android apps.
Moxier mail can do this but however it doesn't work reliably...
So when android support smime??
Oh... I forgot... My wifey have Desire HD with Android revolution HD 5.1.11
Touchdown and Moxier both support SMIME on Android.
I'm using this program and it works like a charm with ANY email client on Android:
Djigzo S/MIME Email encryption, from the author “Djigzo”
For Blackberry devices, download the app from: http://www.djigzo.com/bb.html
bump
i hardly find any S/MIME info regarding android.
any news here?
R2Mail2 seems to be the only/best email app that includes SMIME and PGP.
There is CypherMail, but that says it can't verify clear signed messages.

[Q] Need suggestions on personal contact server software?

I have a XBMC based HTPC that is always on and would like to add a contacts server onto it for use with ICS based Android phones with HD Photos. Since Google is dropping the ball in this category due to lower picture quality and I want syncing due to constant rom upgrades and multiple devices that want the same pictures.
Does anyone know what I would need since I don't have experience in this specific category.
I will be using contacts only from this server email and calender isn't needed but I assume will come with any software that does contacts.
The HTPC is a Ubuntu Linux system and that is not going to change.
Doesn't anyone know what software I would need to make my own contacts server for use with Android?
I see the "server" option in add accounts and want to have my own.

A question about legality of AOSP derived phone with no Google services

Hi all,
One of my friends (an ardent iOS fan) claimed while arguing a few days back to me that "You can't make a phone with AOSP (pure Open source part of Android) which has Yahoo Mail as the default mail app, Bing as the default search engine and Google maps as the default maps app. That would be illegal! ". This was his exact condition. I want to know whether his claim was true. I know there is a full replacement suite of Google play services in active development (called Replicant) - but even if they wanted (including MS and Yahoo ready to provide necessary support), could they do it? What terms and conditions would prevent them from doing it if they had required money and time to implement - given the requirement above?
I believe Nokia has already done that with Nokia x

[Feature Request] WhisperPush Encrypted Texts

I'd like to see Whisperpush integrated into Paranoid Android. Whisperpush allows you to send encrypted texts to other Whishperpush and TextSecure users while using any SMS application of your choice.
system-wide secure messaging integration with compatibility with TextSecure. For those unfamiliar, TextSecure is an open-source cross-platform (iOS and Android) client that encrypts your SMS messages both locally, and over the air when sending to other TextSecure users. The application is maintained by Open WhisperSystems, and lead engineer Moxie Marlinspike.

I second this. Im about to switch to CM just for the full integration of textsecure.

You can install the apk from the CM distribution and use it wherever you like. Keep in mind that it requires GApps to work. If you already use GApps then it's no problem, but if you don't... the idea of increasing your privacy and security by giving Google root access to your phone may strike you as a little odd.

restricted user on phone / only read access to contacts

Hi, I will get a new router soon that supports SIP and IP-phones. So I want to use an Android Smartphone for landline calls. The Android dialer supports SIP accounts (I checked CM11, CM12 and 5.0 stock), so I want to use that.
Because the device is used as a phone, I want to sync all my gmail contacts with their phonenumbers. The phone is supposed to lie around for everyone to use, so there will be no security lock. But because I have all my stuff on my google account I don't want people to have access to more data than the contacts (read access / no write).
How do I manage this? With restricted users I could choose which apps are accessible, but as far as I know it's not available for phones, only tablets.
The easiest was is probably to do it without the sync and just import the whole contact list once every month or something. Then the write access would be no problem, because nobody can mess directly with my contacts.
Is there any ROM that brings restricted users to phones that I can try?
I have a HTC Sensation (CM12) with docking station which I want to use.
I also have a Nexus 4 (stock 5.0) with a partly not responding touchscreen that I could also use when there is a ROM with the needed features only for this device.
