[Guide] 7.x > 6.x unlock, root, xposed - ZTE Axon 7 Guides, News, & Discussion

I'm writing this because a spent a good 8 hours trying to get my phone to where it is. This was definately more complicated than htc or the many Galaxys ive used. went back and forth downgrading and bricking and edl and etc
Started: 7.0 B15 ( used off of amazon sale)
after many different methods, this is what worked. I wont share links, you can search and fin them
1- Down Grade to 6.x on B29
get in to recovery mode and flash from SD "America A2017U SD card software package(323140B2979A2017UV1.0.0B29)SD NEW"2- boot the phone and log in , etc.. turn on usb debugging and oem unlocking
3- download AXON7-A2017U-BL-UNLOCK-KIT
4- copy extracted files to SD
5- Downgrade to B29 on B20
get in to recovery mode and flash from SD "STEP_1_3-B20_FULL_OTA.zip"6- B20 install
reboot into boot loader , get in to recovery mode , and flash from SD "STEP_2-B20_UNLOCKABLE_BL.zip"7- boot the phone and log in , etc.. turn on usb debugging and oem unlocking
8- B20 unlock
reboot into boot loader. On your computer use command prompt and type "fastboot devices" . If you see your device than proceed to "fastboot oem unlock". Choose unlock on the phone ( void warrenty)9- Upgrade from B20 to B29, by flashing from SD update.zip from "America A2017U SD card software package(323140B2979A2017UV1.0.0B29)SD NEW"
you now have unlocked bootloader.
Flash TWRP
Flash SU
Flash xposed.
This worked for me

If that took you 8 hours, you'd better not write a guide about it!
I can write you a 3 step guide that should do the same:
-Download a Marshmallow A2017U official package, unzip it if it has an update.zip inside, drop it in the root of the internal storage. Also download axon7toolkit
-Go to Settings - Updates - select the zip that should pop up
-After the phone boots enable USB debugging and OEM unlock, use axon7toolkit to unlock, root
Done

[Q] Phone stuck at White HTC screen! Please help!

I was trying to flash the Fourth Bar rom without a SD card (Because I don't have one) and my phone is now stuck at the white HTC screen.
I can access TWRP and Bootloader, I get to Fastboot USB, but my phone isn't in the fastboot devices in the command prompt.
Is there any way to fix this?

have you made a nandroid backup of your phone before you tried to flash a rom without a SD CARD? and yes there is a way to fix it
simple solution
Step 1: Boot phone into bootloader by removing battery then placing battery back in phone then turning phone on by holding VOL down and Power button
Step 2: use hansoons AIO toolkit while in bootloader (fastboot) to flash 4EXT recovery
Step 3: boot into recovery and use 4EXT's to mount your phone to the PC using their "toggle USB storage" feature which lets you access your SD card (or internal storage) while in recovery
Step 4: place another ROM on your phone, and then disconnect phone from PC (since you dont have a SD Card place rom on internal storage)
Step 5: do a full system wipe before you flash new rom, Format DATA SYSTEM CACHE+DELVIK
Step 6: FLASH Rom you placed on phone previously
Step 7: After flashing rom successfully go back into 4ext recovery or download 4ext recovery control, and make a NANDROID backup in-case you fk **** up later or again
STEP 8 ( HIT THAT THANKS )
^That's a great solution^
But if you are S-ON, chances are the rom flashed correctly, but the kernel has to be flashed through fastboot.
You can do try this
Option ONE:
1) extract the ROM.ZIP
2) find a file named "boot.img" (it's either in the kernel folder or should just be in the root of the exracted folder)
3) flash the boot.img using this command (fastboot flash boot boot.img)
4) reboot the phone, and you should be good to go.
If you're s-On you'll need to flash the kernel.
Don't forget to let us know if you got it working so we kno if its been solved or not

What I did was put a rom or a backed up image onto my micro SD through a computer and then accessed CWM from bootloader, flashed it, and I was good to go. Hope you can solve your problem quickly (Y)

Your phone is in fastboot mode, not download mode. Small, but distinct difference.
Since you've installed a custom ROM, your bootloader should be unlocked. However, it may be a good idea to issue the oem unlock command through fastboot anyways. Use "adb reboot bootloader" and "fastboot oem unlock" to ensure that your bootloader is unlocked.
Now, since your phone is in fastboot mode, you can do one of two things: 1. Flash a custom recovery and restore your device to stock, or 2. Flash a custom recovery and continue using a custom ROM. Either way, you will need to install TWRP or another custom recovery image of your choice. The TWRP thread is located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-lg-v10/development/recovery-unofficial-twrp-t3239740 Since you're already in the bootloader/fastboot mode, all you would need to do is download TWRP and use "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" and then "fastboot boot twrp.img" to install TWRP. Please note that the 'twrp.img' will vary depending on which version you download, it will probably look more like 'twrp-2.8.7.1-h901.img'. You can just rename the file or use the full file name in the fastboot commands.
Once in TWRP, you can flash whatever ROM you want. To restore your phone to stock, go to this thread and flash the .zip in TWRP http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo.../lg-h901-stock-images-device-restore-t3241170 after doing the standard wipe procedure. :good:

I'm kinda in the same boat now except that I already received the replacement device. Need to re-lock the old V10, but adb won't recognize my device at all. Any more option when that's the case? I can get into both download mode and fastboot. Phone is recognized by LGUP in download mode, but not by adb in fastboot mode for some reason.
(I've verified connection and driver using the other V10, the other V10 is recognized just fine)

Yep. Your phone boots and everything, correct? Just factory reset it (Settings > Backup & Restore > Factory data reset). After its been reset, unlock it, turn on Developers Options, and enable USB debugging. After usb debugging is turned on, connect the v10 to your PC and be sure to hit "Always allow" when prompted by your phone. ADB should now be able to see your device.
If you can't get it to boot up, try restoring through LG UP/Bridge. I don't use any of LG's software, so I'm not sure what those apps can do and whether or not you'll be able to restore through them.
If nothing else, your phone is recognized in fastboot mode, so you can always manually flash the stock system images as well. You want to use the "fastboot flash boot boot.img", "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img", and "fastboot flash system system.img" commands After downloading the stock system images located in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v10/development/lg-h901-stock-img-files-boot-recovery-t3238638
If you haven't ever flashed system images from fastboot, please read this first, as I am not responsible if your phone turns into a paperweight! https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#instructions While the instructions are for nexus devices, it works pretty much the same, except you'd want to use the individual commands instead of a flash-all script.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the follow up! No the phone would not boot at all and kept stuck at boot loop. I ended up just doing the OEM Lock and call it a day, the old device just won't boot to anything at this point.
I tried fastboot flash recovery recovery.img but it's giving some kinda kernel panic message and I was never able to get into recovery. This reminds me of the time when my Note 3 eMMC was fried, it wouldn't give a device ID to adb.
I think I am in the same boat too. I've been OEM unlocked yet recently my phone won't keep the TWRP recovery and keeps putting me into bootloop. I can't install a ROM and only thing I can do is fastboot mode. What did you do OEM lock the device? I am hoping that solution will get rid of that message bootloader unlocked during the bootloop and then I can try and get it serviced.

Complete Guide to Unlocking, Installing TWRP, and LineageOS w/ Root on A2017U

Quick notes:
ALL files/software needed are linked below
Process only confirmed working for this model, A2017U
Desktop PC used is on Windows 10 x64, no 3rd Party Antivirus
I assume you have ADB installed on your computer, but if not here is an easy guide:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48915118#post48915118
Also assumed you have the Axon7 connected to PC via USB cable
Here's the steps I took, with info compiled and reorganized from the two guides linked at bottom of post:
1. The downgrade from B15 Nougat to B29 Marshmallow
(skip to step 2 if you are already on B29)
A- Download the full B29 software package, provided by ZTE on their website. Select the support tab halfway down the page, then select the software updates to download the .ZIP (mirror provided at bottom in case ZTE changes things)
B- Download it, unzip it once, then put the update.zip file on your SD card.
C- Turn on OEM unlocking in the Axon Settings Menu (it is needed to flash from sd card)
You can do this by navigating to Settings -> About phone -> Tap "Build number" 7 times.
Now navigate to Settings -> Advanced settings -> Developer options -> Enable "OEM unlocking".
D- Boot phone to recovery - [Power] + [Volume Up] key combo - Release the keys when you see the ZTE logo.
E- Choose update from sd card, then pick the update.zip from the sdcard
F- The phone will flash the B29 software. It is a bit slow, have patience and let it do what it needs to do.
2. Unlocking Bootloader and installing TWRP
A- Install the Qualcomm QUSB_BULK drivers. You should be able to simply extract them, then right click qcser.inf and press Install.
B- Boot the Axon7 into EDL mode. [Power] + [Volume Up] + [Volume Down]
C- Your device should be recognized in Windows’ Device Manager as a COM port called "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008".
D- Download and Unzip the FASTBOOT_UNLOCK EDL file.
E- Install MiFlash on your computer. Open the program.
F- In MiFlash, Select the folder "A2017U_FASTBOOT_UNLOCK_EDL". Use the child folder inside containing fastboot.img and other files. Do not use the parent folder containing the META-INF folder, it caused flashing to fail for me.
G- Now just hit [flash] - watch the progress bars move and wait for the device row to turn green with flash complete!
H- Use [Power] + [Volume Up] key combo to exit EDL mode and enter recovery
I- Open CMD window as admin, and use "fastboot oem unlock" command to unlock (and wipe) your device. When prompted on Axon7, select Yes to unlock bootloader
J- Reboot phone into EDL mode
K- Return to MiFlash, Select the folder "A2017U_B29_TWRP_EDL". Click [refresh] if device row shows anything under status.
L- Now just hit [flash] like before - watch the progress bars move and wait for the device row to turn green with flash complete!
M-Reboot phone to TWRP
If the flash fails or is unable to communicate with the device, use the [Power] + [Volume Up] + [Volume Down] key combo to restart EDL mode.
Release the keys after 5 seconds then wait another 5 seconds before using the [refresh] or [flash] buttons on MiFlash.
3. Installing Lineage OS With Root
A- Using TWRP, Wipe the device (data/cache/dalvik, all that stuff)
B- Install the Universal Bootloader (A2017X_B15_Universal_Bootloader.zip), and modem (A2017U_N_Modem.zip)
C- Install Lineage OS ROM .zip, with root addon (addonsu-arm64-signed.zip)
D- Install Gapps
E- Restart Axon7, enjoy!
Thanks to the reply made by u/tabletalker7 on my last thread, I now have an unlocked bootloader, TWRP, and LineageOS with root. 10/10 !

So, is the bootloader unlockable on Nougat? Could someone link me to a guide?

The fewer steps the better, of course.
So if we are on B15, we can just skip section 1 of the guide, and the rest of the steps will work without the downgrade to B29?
Excited to try this, since I've used CM ever since it was the cat's pajamas on the HTC G1/Dream but haven't even rooted the Axon 7 yet.

Going back to stock is easy peasy.
use the official update from ZTE, place update.zip on sdcard
boot to recovery and wipe (cache/data/system) then flash update.zip
reboot and you're back to stock
want to lock the bootloader too?
boot to fastboot
fastboot oem lock

I can flash the fastbook unlock in MiFlash, but I get stuck trying to actually unlock the bootloader afterwards. ADB recognizes the device when it's turned on, but when it's in recovery, it doesn't recognize it at all. So I am lost as to what to do.
Edit: Alright, I got it to work. I just went into bootloader and unlocked instead of recovery. Maybe I misread the instructions but all of your other instructions were spot on! Thanks
Is there any way to do this on a macbook?

Yes, there is a one flash installation fix. Installed B15-NEW_FULL (Nougat) twice to recover from failed LOS installs.

How can I lock the phone back after unlocking bootloader, rooting, installing Xposed?

How can I lock the phone back after unlocking bootloader, rooting, installing Xposed?
Wipe installed custom ROM (System+data+cache+dalvik).
**Internal storage optional (You may have to flash TWRP again though).
Install MIUI recovery ROM pack through TWRP. Run MIUI initial setup. Reboot to fastboot and flash stock recovery, you can find stock recovery in MIUI forums. After that check for successful flash and successful system boot. Only then run the fastboot command to lock the bootloader :
fastboot oem lock
**Do not lock with TWRP. You'll hard brick your phone
***After flashing MIUI in TWRP flash lazyflasher or your device will be stuck
If you don't understand the complications in this method please ignore it, am sure there are some easier ways using MiFlash. Check MIUI forum for relocking and recovering to MIUI. If you wanna come back to the world of custom ROMs and Mods XDA is the place.

Thank You
BTW If you have the time could you write this more in steps like for a noob. If not it still kicks a$$ and thanks for reply
First you need to get rid of your current ROM and it's data. For that boot into TWRP and select wipe, in the list of partitions displayed select :
•System
•Data
•Cache
•Dalvikand confirm wipe. This step removes the ROM and data associated with it. Now the only thing you can access is TWRP and fastboot.
Also during wipe you can also select to wipe Internal Storage partition but after you do this you may lose TWRP also at the next boot. Now your phone can only boot into fastboot mode. So if you did wipe your internal storage also flash TWRP again from fastboot. If you ask how..:
•Download TWRP recovery from here
•Copy the downloaded file to any folder on your PC.
•Install ADB and fastboot drivers on your PC if you haven't.
•Reboot phone into fastboot mode(Power + Volume down) and connect to PC.
•Go to folder where your placed the TWRP image file.
•Open command prompt in that folder (Shift+right click mouse, open command window here)
•Type the following commands without the quotes :
" fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.1-0-mido.IMG "
•Now try rebooting into TWRP (Power + Volume Up). If you followed the steps right you should be able to.Remember this step is only if you decide to wipe internal storage also else it is completely not necessary.
OK now that you are left with a phone that only has TWRP we need a ROM to boot into, in your case you want a MIUI ROM. Download latest stable MIUI recovery ROM pack from MIUI website or just google if your having trouble finding it. For MIUI ROMs to successfully boot on a custom recovery you need to flash an additional zip called lazyflasher else your phone will be stuck at the MI logo. I'll attach the zip below. Okay so now since you have the required files copy them to your phone's internal storage.
Boot into TWRP and install the MIUI ROM zip first and the Lazyflasher zip after that. Reboot into system and phone should enter MIUI initial setup in some minutes(be patient MIUI initial boot can be long). Finish the setup.
Now you need to flash the latest stock recovery of your phone. I don't have it with me now so a simple google search will do the work. The procedure for flashing the recovery is the same as flashing TWRP which I have mentioned above. The only change you have do in the fastboot command line is the file name of your stock recovery.
After flashing check for successful boot, only then proceed with the relocking procedure as follows:
•Boot phone into fastboot mode
•Connect to PC
•Open Command prompt
•Type this fastboot command without the quotes :
" fastboot oem lock"•Once done reboot your phone.
Now you must have a relocked phone.
**Never relock your phone with any custom mods like custom recovery, custom ROM or even a MIUI which is rooted. Also be on 100% stock configuration before relocking device. Failing to do so will result in a hard brick.

[TUTORIAL] Manually Install / Flash 7.11 NOUGAT Even To Unbrick A ZE553KL Zenfone

MANUALLY INSTALLING FULL NOUGAT 7.11 FIRMWARE 2018/03/15(security_patch 2018-02-05) (RECOVERY, BOOT, SYSTEM) Even If Its Soft Bricked Because You Messed Up Somewhere. Files Here Are For Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom ZE553KL Z01HD WW Sku .
Its The Last Nougat Update Before Oreo Was Released.
MORE FIRWARES HERE
Story Time:
As I Remember It.....Condensed Version, This Was Over A Few Days Of Trial And Error, Mainly Because Adb SideLoad Refused To Flash Asus's Stock Firmware Zip Files.
I Messed Up My Friends Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom, ZE553KL.
He Bought Used, He Quickly Updated To Oreo From Within The Phones Update But Was Having Missed Texts And Slow Lte(4g) Speeds, He Wasnt Sure If It Happened On Nougat Which The Phone Was On Originally.
Downgraded To 6.01, Installed Twrp, Magisk, Still Having Same Issues, Flashing An Update Zip W/a Modded Updater Script Via Twrp Caused A Soft Bricked Phone, It Never Completed The Flash, Twrp Backup Didnt Work, Factory Reset A No Go, Couldn't Manually Flash Stock Rom As Adb Sideload Always Gave Errors, Fastboot System images Didnt Help For One Reason Or Another, Phone Was Just Bootlooping Back To The Unlocked Bootloader Menu.
Down Loaded Alot Of Stuff, Read Countless Pages, And Somehow Got The Right Firmware Files(recovery, boot, system img files) That Was Flashable Via Fastboot Extracted From A Zip, My Fix Is Below. These Are Not My Files But I Cant Remember Where I Got Them From As I Dl-ed Alot Of Stuff Trying To Get This Phone To A Running State. No I Havent Tried Oreo Yet, He Has His Phone Back Now And Not Sure When He'll Let Me Play With It Again, Lol.

I can provide you latest system, boot, recovery.img files if you want...

What do u mean by raw. In what format is it in.
I've converted oreo stock firmware .dat files to .img files but I can't test them as I don't have the phone. My friend seems happy on nougat and I don't think he'll let me flash it on his phone.
I haven't tried dl-ing official stock and seeing if phone will see it as an update to manually self install via nougat recovery or maybe to try adb sideload again.

ciao
God bless you! You made my quite dead phone, live again!
Thank you
I can't update to Oreo via ota... do you know why?
the op here. lol, my friend dropped the phone and now its dead screen, no display/no touch but phone still works.
he doesnt want to get a screen for it as it will cost almost as much as he paid for it.......so its mine now.
been flashing stuff to it, gave it a very hard soft brick, still dealing with that.
my goal was to run it remotely but get adb/usb debugging enabled and get pc trusted by phone. i thought he wanted to sell it as is but decided to give to me to do whatever i want to it
got out of the hard soft brick, installed twrp, use twrp cli, twrp backups and restore, rooted w/magisk, installed 6.0.1 (fluked it), 7.11 using my method above with the extra erase commands, removed frp, got adb /usb debugging enabled and device adb authorized by hacking , got vysor, a remote control mirroring app running, all without a working screen.
i'll write up a tut for any1 else that needs help. fyi, weak screen if dropped even short distance, but he had no cover, but pretty to hard to brick it, imo, ymmv
