Hi, I bought a 7" HDX and want to install a custom ROM. I have some previous experience with an HP Touchpad and CM.
I have tried reading the forum, but due to comprehension issues I am struggling to make sense of what current options are for installing a ROM?
Can someone give me some bullet points for installing the best android ROM on 4.5.5.2 HDX.

You need to 'root' FireOS, install a vulnerable aboot and then unlock the bootloader. I suspect none of those terms make any sense. Unfortunately, installing a custom ROM on this device is not easy for those unfamiliar with Android and the unique characteristics of Amazon devices. You'll likely need to do a lot of reading (and asking) to build understanding and confidence. There is no great place to start; here is probably as good as any. Post questions in that thread as they arise.

I recently purchased a ViewSonic gTablet 300-2.2 and I currently have it rooted, custom recovery, and a custom ROM. My question is mainly for those who still use this as a daily tool.
What should be the most current STABLE recovery, and download link (if possible) along with a few of the most up-to-date ROMS (ports, AOSP, etc.) available?
I'm just trying to get the most of out this tablet. I scored it for $90, consideirng it's a $300. So if anyone could be so kind as to point me to the most current (stable) threads and possibly one(s) with the least functioning items (such as the camera). I'd be happy to make a donation to someone. I'm not unfamiliar with how to do these things, but this is an older tablet and I'm wanting to get the best out of it.

Hi! Fairly new to downloading custom ROMs onto devices, just got the Viper ROM for my htc one m8, was wondering if there are any ROMs out there for the kindle fire hdx 8.9. I have been searching high and low and can seem to find anything, just ROMs for older versions. I have my device rooted already with towelroot. I also have SuperSU and Safestrap already setup on it as well.
Also wanted to know if I should leave Safestrap on my Kindle for now if there isn't any ROM that works well with the new update? Because I've read that some people are having problems with Safestrap and that their tablets are bricking.

to answer your question no I do not believe there are any actual custom ROMs for the latest firmware I mean seriously I think it just came out this week you may be able to check out adding gapps but use it was safestrap and use it properly there is no rolling back from that software I believe towelroot still works. I'm not sure of safestrap you will have to go and read the safestrap thread for I am not on that new firmware. Best advice is to just get to reading and that is the only way you're going to understand enough about this device not to turn it into a paper weight. The only way you really break this device is if you miss use using safestrap or doing something else that is ill advised or not advised that all ... There is just too much information and too many ways to Brick and to describe in your thread here.. The responsibility is yours to do your research and their are specific procedures that you want to read thoroughly and understand. Or as of even right now I do not believe there is a brick rescue for this device yet.
I am fairly familiar with rooting and such, but I am currently lost. I just received my hdx (thor) and have it rooted with a custom recovery and a stock backup. But, my question is, do I need to be on certain versions for certain custom roms? I'm currently on 13.3.1.0. Would I need to download/install a more recent version before I can began flashing?

It depends on what you want to flash, but in general 13.3.1.0 is one of the, if not the, best to be on. It should work with Cpasjuste's CM11 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/development/cm-11-20141216-unofficial-thor-t2974818) and ggow's AOSP Nexus ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/development/apollo-nexus-v1-1-t2835838) as long as you put TWRP on it first (http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/development/recovery-twrp-2-8-1-0-thor-t2986004)
It looks like ggow is now recommending 13.3.2.3 as the best place to be for his rom to resolve some graphic glitches people have been having with .3.1.0, he provides a flashable version and instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/kin...p-flashable-3-2-3-bootloader-upgrade-t3025504
I own a Fire HDX 7 with FW 13.3.2.7. I've also been away for a about a month and have recently been looking through numerous posts around here since then but haven't found a newer answer. Is it still not possible rollback and unlock the bootloader and install a custom rom like CyanogenMod, or am I only still limited to only safe-strap and Nexus?
If it's still not possible, what is the reason that 3.2.6 can be downgraded, what is the difference between .6 and .7/8 that makes this not viable.
If anyone has an idea of how to make it work I am willing to try with my device, I'm just not sure what the community needs to be able to make this change work.
Lastly, if I sent in my Fire HDX for a replacement, does anyone know if the replacement will come with 4.5 or a lower 13.x.x.x version? I just can't stand the lack of OTG support, only a 16GB HD, and would love to music/games on USB stick or use a gamepad.

Sorry but I still don't think OTG support is available yet be even with the given roms right now. And the new one may be a long shot to have lower firmware. May have more luck asking for a downgrade like some have said they have done.
You can't downgrade from 3.2.7/3.2.8. Either via hack or request to Amazon. At present your options are limited to 1) rooting, disabling OTA and living with native ROM + sideloaded Gapps; or 2) installing Safestrap and the Nexus ROM described elsewhere. TWRP is not an option with 3.2.7 which rules out CM11 and other ROMs...at least for now. OTG support is not available as it has been disabled at the HW level (as I understand it). If you need that look for another device.

Thanks for the reply, I already got downgraded from 4.5 to 13.3.2.7, but sadly you can't rollback 3.2.7 to a version that the bootloader is unlockable. And since Amazon has already rolled it back once the fuse has been blown, and from my understanding they can't downgrade it any further once they blow the fuse.
I am thinking of just trying to get them to send me a replacement and hope it comes with an un-upgraded version. Has anyone gotten a replacement recently and know what version they will ship it with?
From what I've read around the reason we aren't able to roll back 13.3.2.7 is because the .bin (?) deletes itself and no ones been able to capture it? I have Linux running on my kindle also, so if someone who knows more about the OS than me wants to help me to to capture the file via linux running inside the FireOS in a 'man in the middle' type setup let me know what needs to be done.
I'm willing to help, unless most of the devs have moved on away from this device.
Edit: Just saw your reply Davey126, thanks for clearing up a couple of my questions, my offer to still help finding a 3.2.7 workaround still stands though.

I have google play services and can get the apps, however I still have a question. How do I get from my relatively fresh kindle, to a kindle running a completely diffrent ROM. You can't as vulnerabilities & associated exploits are not effective against 4.5.2. It is possible to roll back to a Jellybean based ROM with some effort. However, I do not recommend that path due to the significant risk of a nonrecoverable 'hard' brick. Just have to wait/hope for a new vulnerability that allows the boot loader to be unlocked or further development on a Safestrap compatible ROM that works on 4.x. Sorry.
