Pros and Cons of Stock vs. Custom ROMs + Kernels - Moto Z Questions & Answers

Hey guys; I'm trying to figure out what the various problems are that we encounter with the different options for this phone, and I think I've narrowed it down to the list below - but I could be wrong. Please let me know if any of the following isn't true!
Common Problems
WiFi doesn't work: I THINK this is a ROM-specific problem. Try a different ROM (stock or custom).
Battery life is poor: This seems to be an issue with LineageOS, which as far as I can tell is the foundation of all custom ROMs. Try a stock ROM.
Cannot reprogram fingerprint sensor: This is a 'problem' with the stock ROMs. Try a custom ROM (though I've actually had some limited luck with the "Fingerprint Quick Action" app in the Play Store).
Cannot customize SystemUI (status bar, immersive mode, etc.): Another 'problem' with the stock ROM. I've hoped to find a custom kernel that opens this up, but so far no luck (does anyone have any tips out there?).
Cannot pass SafetyNet with Magisk: I've only been able to get this to work with custom ROMs (LineageOS), but it COULD be a kernel issue. Does anyone know of a kernel/stock ROM combination that passes SafetyNet?
Moto Mods don't work: This appears to be an issue with MOST custom ROMs, though some have fixed the issue to some degree. Try a different ROM.
Proximity and Accelerometer sensors don't work: I actually only ran into this problem on one specific stock ROM. Installing a new stock firmware resolved the issue.
Are any of my conclusions wrong? Are there more problems you've encountered that are worth documenting?

[Q] Stock ROM that supports hardware button re-mapping

Hi! Currently running CM 10.1 on my intl SGS3, which I quite late realized wasn't a good idea given lack of Exynos hardware documentation from Samsung.
Currently trying to figure out what stock based ROM I should switch to, if any. CM10.1 has been working OK but with some gapps crashes now and then.
My main things that I would want to keep from CM10.1 is
1) Hardware button re-mapping -- I don't like not having a recent apps/multitask button so I reassign menu to this. Do any stock ROMs enable this?
2) LED color assignment -- the pulsing led feature in CM10.1 is great. I tried various apps to do this while I was running original firmware, but none worked. Any stock ROMs that has this feature?
Maybe I'm asking for features that can only be enable in slight rewrites/modified ROMs?

[Q] Galaxy SII / I9100G - GPS lock issue

Hi Experts
I have i9100g with neatrom. I also wants to use custom rom because stock rom is very heavy and has lots of default service/process running
which makes device sluggis.
My problem is my GPS doesnt lock on custom AOSP roms. I have tried many version on CM from 9 to latest 11, Slim roms, MIUI, PA etc. GPS doesnt work
on any of them. The only custom rom on which my GPS works is OMNI ROM but problem is on OMNI rom also GPS takes very long time 5-10 minutes to lock
and many times doesnt lock at all.
using stock rom or neat rom GPS works like charm and lock time is around 10 sec without fail.
I heard some of the nightly builds of CM has this problem fixed but i couldnt find any. I have tried flashing a lots of roms.
Can somebody please let me know which version has this fix or is there any way to fix this issue?
I have tried all faster GPS kind of app on play store but didnt help. changing NTP server also didnt work.
I have read all the post related to this issue but coudn't find the solution.
PLEASE SOMEBODY HEAP....THIS GPS PROBLEM IS KILLING ME....NO MONEY FOR NEW PHONE
Thanks

[Q] Sensors Work And Stop Working

I own a Galaxy S4 I9505 device.
Earlier I was running the stock based Custom ROM (Imperium 16.1, Android 4.4.2) on my S4 and there was no problem at all. That ROM gave me supreme performance, stability and battery life.
And then official Lollipop (5.0.1) was released by Samsung. I flashed the latest stock based custom Lollipop ROM on my device and the problem started (or may be the problem started because I have dropped my device once).
Now what happens is ... after I flash a ROM everything is working fine. But then after some uncertain period all the sensors stop working on the device.
Sometimes the issue is resolved by a simple restart, at times I have to clear the Cache and sometimes I have to clear the Cache and Dalvik Cache**.
All the sensors start working and after some time suddenly, all the sensors stop working.
I have tried all stock based Custom Lollipop ROMs and even AOSP based Lollipop ROMs, but this problem is persistent with all the Lollipop ROMS.
I have even tried Original Lollipop Firmware (flashed through odin), but the problem persists.
I open the back-cover and tightened all the screws, thinking it could resolve the issue. But the problem persists.
I am not able to decipher if this is a Software or Hardware issue.
Can anyone help me on this? Has anyone faced this type of problem? :crying:
I am not sure if this is the right place to post such a question. If it isn't please guide me to a proper thread.
Thanks
Since you just said you drop the phone.. i think it has something to do with that... looks like a hardware issue..

@radz.min thanks for the screen shot .... you think it could be a hardware issue ... but as i mentioned .... sensors work good for half an hour or so and then they stop working ... if it was a hardware issue ... it should not work at all .... right ??

Focus Fix issue

I in the past did not have the issue where the camera keeps making sound and can't focus at all, I've seen that devs have made special kernel for such users, is this issue permanent for all roms that I install henceforth or just on the current rom, if I flash a focus Fix kernel will its effect be on my current rom only or on all the roms I install after that? does focus Fix kernel restore it back to original state or you still have slight issue and hardware clicks? I'd appreciate answers!

Hi
Just like you I didn't have focuse issue but after I flashed a ROM with the fix now i have clicking sound and refocusing in videos. And I have this problem now in every ROM even the ROMs without the fix.
Now I'm trying to solve this problem, I hope rolling back to the official stock ROM will help me.
I don't recommend to install a ROM with the fix!

install pixel experience++ unofficial rom, you won't have the focus issue on that, it has no bugs except for the fact that volte doesn't work on it after reboot yet.

Does the Focus Issue problem work with Pixel Experience++ ?
Because i have the problem since i flashed a rom and the problem is still alive
i have tested many different camera apps but none fix the blurry pictures.
the focus works on a very low distance, but when you go outside and want to take a picture, they are always blurry..
I had the focus issue (blocked at 20 cm) and installing Resurrection Remix (RR-N-v5.8.5-20171006-x2-Final.zip), worked for me

Which rom/kernel should I use ?

Hello everyone, I was asking myself which rom and kernel should I use in order to:
-Get the best performance ?
-Get the best screen on time ?
-Get something balanced between performance and screen on time ?
There are so many custom roms and kernels for this phone, I can't try them all.
Thanks in advance.
USE PIXEL EXPERIENCE ROM WITH Sphinx Kernel - v1.8.7 by milouk
I have tried LOS, PE, NOS, Omni, AOSIP and AEX. But trust me, nothing is as fast and smooth as miui. But I hate miui for tons of system apps. So, the solution is miui eu ROM. Try it once and you will be amazed to discover a new miui without any bloatware and blazing fast performance. And just to let you know that none of the custom ROMs have IR camera driver and hence face unlock doesn't work as miui. Moreover, almost all custom ROMs and kernels have battery % drop issue on reboots. However, miui eu doesn't have any such issue. So, you may consider trying miui eu after trying all custom ROMs to see the difference or else different people may tell you different stories.
