i had the same problem, just got the watch for new year. it had android 4.4 and it could not update.
the answer is this:
install fastboot and adb drivers and unlock the bootloader with this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g-watch/development/script-lg-g-watch-tool-t2820863
then install this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g-watch/development/tool-lg-g-watch-return-to-stock-t3158349
and you will have the latest android wear version
unlocking bootloader doesnt affect anything.
now i have 5.1.1 wear its pretty and more useful.

Here is latest version of TWRP 2.8.7.0 recovery with material theme for European version of Desire 820 with Qualcomm processor and single sim (htc_a51ul) .
Will NOT work with MTK, so please DO NOT TRY.

Unlock Your bootloader on htcdev
Untar attached file.
Reboot into bootloader by pressing POWER+VOLUME_UP until display come black, than don't let POWER button but immediately press&hold VOLUME_DOWN until You see HBOOT mode.
When have BLUE signed HBOOT press POWER button once.
That will will change HBOOT into FASTBOOT
Open terminal on Your PC
Apply:

Reboot into Recovery

Indeed, it have black screen for first maybe 7-10 seconds.
Rom don't have anything with recovery.

The recovery from link I was provided is for a51_dtul (i think it dual sim) and it's only working for me, but I don't know why because I have a51_ul, and any recovery for a51_ul is working for me. Btw. great job with this recovery, I hope we can get this thing to work

Don't know because I can start any dtul,ul,tuhl (32bit) recovery without problem...plus, this one work without problem on my phone. Strange but we will figured out what is wrong and why don't want to show graphics.

Existenz in the best in marshmallow. Ll recommend you to stay on this. Don't go back to Lollipop. And enjoy your custom rom.

Hmm I can't just get recovery on my version? I want to try some things like bootamination and some apps that need flashing before going to another rom because I like lollipop is it possible?

Yes but there is a different method for 5.1.1. google search that or search on forums. U'll get recovery.

Way better than stock and yes faster. Though the battery is almost same as stock. But I'm made a thread on how to get more battery on that rom

You don't have to flash a new rom!
just flash the bootloader file via odin or just flash the file *Note4 Stock.zip* from the attachment via twrp
