[Q] how to unpack tar.md5 ?

Hi,
I downloaded a ROM from sammobile.com for my galaxy tab 10.1, and all I want is system.img which is located in a tar.md5 file .
if I extract is with 7zip I get a message "there is no correct record at the end of archive"
and dsixda kitchen don't seem to recognize it .
any ideas please .
thanks.
Well its simple just rename it to .tar and use winrar to extract it. the md5 extension makes odin calculate a hash to check if the firmware you're flashing is not corrupted.
hi,
I did that and I got a message "there is no correct record at the end of archive"
the files are extracted but I think it is corrupted because dsixda kitchen can't read it.
just extract it by 7-Zip and don't care about message
I have this problem too, my 7-zpi say that canĀ“t open file format unknowed or damage.
your download maybe interupted, try download it again and do md5 checksum

You might be opening the wrong file.
You have to download 2 files:
xxxx.tar
xxxx.tar.md5
the first one is the one you have to open.
the second one is the one that only have the MD5 result of the first.

Redownlaod and try to unzip again. Kitchen should open it, make sure u have kitchen scripts for your phone or edit from flashable zip. Afaik
best idea
dont use 7zip but use unoversal extractor. it will extract everything.
I have the same issue for 5301. I have to get either the recovery or system img for creating a custom rom. Usually samsung firmware files can be extracted using izarc, 7zip or universal extract tool. some can be opened with ultraISO or similar tool. I tried dsixdas kitchen as well. That does not even acknowledge this ROM. These firmwares come as a single tar file with md5 sum attached. There is something different about this ROM file that wont even let let the regular tools see what is inside the file. I tried to open it with a hex editor and it looks similar what a regular tar.md5 file would look. Looking at the log file from universal extractor:

99.3% (.TAR) TAR archive (149/5)
0.6% (.LZMA) LZMA compressed file (1/1)
7-Zip Tar archive extractions cannot be logged.
If Odin can flash these files using the same boot, recovery and system... images then there must be a way to extract these img files. wonder if odin extracts to a temp location?

Use odinatrix to extrat system.img n modem files..
Its the easiest tool do so...
U may also use splitfus2 bt its way trickier to use than odinatrix.

Thanks SArnab! so finally I am able to split the files using odinatrix. Now for this type of turbo ROMs how do I create odin flashable file???
I created a regular odin tar file with md5 sum but that does not go past 'NAND Write Start'. Please advise.

Your pc shud b superfast so that odintrix can work witout lag.
My HP G6 lapi took around 10 mins to extrqct the one .tar.md5 file..
The tool will automatically extract diffrnt .tar files such as modem_xxx.tar pda_xxx.tar n csc_xxx.tar
Now u can use these to flash through odin witout any prb.
U can use pda.tar in kitchen to get boot.img n system.img.
Kitchen will also help u extract sysmtem foldr from system.img.
U can also flash through odin the single .tar.md5....
Choose that in pda field...
Odin is smart enough to do rest of the part.

Appreciate the quick response. I guess my question was not clear enough. I extracted the recovery and created a clockwork recovery named recovery.img. Now I want to flash this recovery back on the device. I created the tar file using:
tar -H ustar -c recovery.img > CWMrecovery.tar
md5sum -t CWMrecovery.tar >> CWMrecovery.tar
mv CWMrecovery.tar CWMrecovery.tar.md5
When I flash this using odin3_v3.07 md5 is verified but he flash does not go through and stops at NAND write start. Is there a special way to create a odin flashable tar.md5 file foe these turbo firmwares?

[HELP]how to repack system.img on 4.1.1

Hi guys, I could successfully unpacked and repacked system.img on 4.0.4 for my Galaxy S III by learning from xda, add root files, delete unnecessary system apps, etc, and using "tar -cvf ...." to make an tar pack to flash with ODIN, thx to all xda developpers.
But when I did this again on new GSIII 4.1.1 firmwares like DI2, My phone jammed in the 2nd screen, could someone help me?
Here is what I did on 4.1.1 firmwares in Ubutu, just like what I did on 4.0.4
1. unpack system.img from tar files
2. exchange system.img to system.img.ext4 in Ubutu
3. unpack system.img.ext4 with
Code:
mkdir systest; mount -o rw,loop system.img.ext4 systest
oh just forget the folder name.
4. modify the files in systest folder blablabla
5. repack system.img from systest folder using
Code:
sudo mkuserimg.sh -s systest systest-new.img ext4 temp 1536M
6. then make a new tar file to flash with recovery.img, hidden.img etc.
This tar file could be flashed with ODIN successfully, but like I said above, my phone didn't response in the 2nd screen with Samsung logos, I've wiped userdata in stock recovery but it didn't work.
Then I didn't modify any files, just unpack and repack system.img, flash it with ODIN, my phone remains the same
Could someone kindly to figure it out what I did wrong on new 4.1.1 firmwares? Is it about Samsung file format in 4.1.1?
Oh no replies until now...:crying:
I tested other 4.1.1 firmwares, unpack and repack system.img, then zip into new tar file, flash it, also stuck on the Samsung Logo with vibration
but it worked on all 4.0.4 firmwares

Extract system.IMG from your downloaded ROM
After extracting system.IMG install Linux reader (free software google it)
Using Linux reader open IMG file and extract system ui apk and paste it to system/app via any root file manager ....
Else use adb fast boot method to flash system.IMG in fast boot mode ...(this method will unroot your device )
All the best ?

How to extract system.img.ext4?

I accidentally deleted DefaultContrainerService.apk and now I can't install apps. Can someone tell how can I extract system.img.ext4 to get it back?
I think Android Kitchen can do that.

7-Zip
7-Zip cannot read .img.ext4 files. I used program called sgs2toext4 and now the file is .ext4.img and 7-Zip can read it but it can't extract any .so files. I need to get libdefcontrainer_jni.so from /system/priv-app/DefaultContrainerService/lib/arm.

Use for that the EXT2 unpacker tool,
https://androidfrog.com/5gt67f
Select Package and then the directory where you want to extract it.
Doesn't work. It can't save that .so file.
same problem here, i try to extract cache.img from S8 firmware (G950FXXU1AQJ1/G950FOXM1AQJ1/G950FXXU1AQJ1/G950FXXU1AQJ1 , 20171018104053) . using ImgExtractor 1.3.7 it extracts , but the extracted zip cannot be opened by any program, with ext4_unpacker (after i fix the img header 4 bytes using sgs4ext4fs) it gives 'list index out of bounds' when i try to extract the zip, using CacheRipperUX it extracts the zip from img but when i try to open the zip using 7-zip it only sees a few files, when i try to open with Winrar it sees full list but cannot extract any of them because it give archive corrupted.
i found a solution: convert the original cache.img (samsung sparse ext4) to raw ext4 using simg2img , and the resulted .img file open with 7-zip and extract the content. My zip content was extracted correctly.
Is there any app for android which can extract .img files like system.img?
