Where To Start With New Phone? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just bought an Xperia XA1 Ultra, and I want to ROM it (or I think I want to ROM it) to stock Android, but I have zero idea what that entails. Is there a start-up guide for these kind of things? Are there any risks involved and if so, how can I mitigate them? Would the camera be "dumbed down" by installing a different ROM?
I'm not even sure if this is the right place to ask this, but any help would be appreciated.

You mean you want stock rom of your Android or you want to flash custom rom or other device rom in your android. If you flash other device rom in your device then it bricked your android. Want more clarification what you want.

im no expert, so dont quote me on this, but from my understanding, and what apple was doing and just about everyother device ive had that had software updates (ps3,psp) when u do the stock rom update it will install over the rom and you will lose your custom rom.
If you switch from the stock rom to a custom rom, you will NOT receive official firmware updates anymore... so as long as you don't go and download a stock rom and install it manually, your phone will continue to run the custom rom until you update / change it...

Most likely a dev will go ahead and release a flashable version of any updates so you can still effectively get updates despite not being stock.

[Q] Xperia ray rooting procedure

Hey! Guys,
I wanted to know what are the steps to follow in-order to install a custom ROM on my xperia ray. I've read few tutorial but still I've got some questions to clarify. Just tell me whether below steps are correct.
First root the device
Unlock the boot loader
Flash a custom ROM
And if I'm installing a custom ROM on to my device I want to achieve below point too.
Want a complete back up with SMS/MMS, Apps ..etc (can be acheived via some back-up apps)
Want to take a complete copy of my current stock firmware (as a ftf file)
Any else, that I should follow which I missed here ...
I'm still curious about this.. Please advise me if I missed anything here since I'm a newbie when it comes to android rooting, flashing stuffs..

OK, root is really important  I think you should also get cwm recovery as step 2 and figure out how to use it before you unlock your boot loader. There are a bunch of ROMs in Ray Dev that are for unlocked boot loaders so you can try some things out and get comfortable flashing with cwm and/or flashtool. If you find that you like what you are doing, then unlock the boot loader. It probably will only take a day or two to figure out cwm and how flashing with cwm and flashtool work, but by then you will be a lot more comfortable with the instructions for unlocking your boot loader and you will be less likely to end up in a bad place and people will be able to help you better, since you already know how to do most of the stuff.
Thread moved. Questions belong here in Q&A.
Thanks

Asking for good roms is not allowed
There are a few MIUI roms for example or you could try MiniCMSandwich for AOSP style, just search around in development section and find your favourite!

[Q] Few questions before I flash a ROM.

Hi guys, new to android, few questions before I flash a ROM.
-Will I need anything else other than the ROM file to flash it?
-If for what ever reason I flash the ROM and something goes wrong how can revert to stock? how do I do this? (I used TWRP when rooting)
-Can I back up the current stock ROM and all my settings/apps?
-I want something with 4.2.2 or higher that's stable, recommendations? (I'm using the AT&T Version).
Thanks!

Make the Nandroid backup of the ROM so incase something goes wrong u can revert back.....
It will restore ur phone to it Current state before u installed the Custom ROM...

Unfortunately there is no ROM higher than 4.2.2 android for AT&T version of HOX+
Thanks!
What's "android-sdk-windows setup" and where do I find it?
Ok is there a rule against making recommendations of stable roms? I want sense 5, AT&T.

You don't necessarily need this, but you definitely need something to flash the boot.img (contains kernel), otherwise your phone won't boot. Because our phones are S-ON we need to flash the boot.img separately via fastboot, since we are not allowed to flash it in recovery.
Alternatively, get you any toolkit from One X+ forum that works for AT&T too in order to flash the boot.img.
In case something goes wrong or you want to go back to stock, you will need the backup on your phone and at least the boot.emmc.win on your computer, you will also have to flash this boot.img backup in fastboot again to get your backup working.
To your question with the rom recommendation, I am using ViperX+ 2.0.2, it has Sense 5, a lot of tweaks, also a custom kernel included, and works stable so far. I haven't tested any other roms but u should definitely check that one out.
A last tip from me: If your phone stucks on the boot loop although u used the right boot.img, open your rom.zip and extract the boot.img from there, that is what took me hours to find out because the one provided by the developers did not work

I think so, yes
BUT, coming from nexus devices with plenty of great ROM's, not sure yet if there are good roms for this device. I just got my P20 lite. Unlocking bootloader, installing custom recovery, installing ROM, root was so easy on nexus devices. Looks like this is more of a pain. Gonna read some on this forum first
If you have the bootloader unlock code I recommend you try the descendant treble rom. The best custom rom I ever used

If you can obtain the appropriate Stock ROM offered by OEM/Carrier then it should be possible: you flash this Stock ROM by means of tablet's Stock Recovery.
