I have an M8 from AT&T. I am using simple mobile as my carrier, which makes certain things not work like software update, TV remote, & mobile hotspot. It currently is running 5.0.2. I want to update to a very specific version of marshmallow that I had running on my HTC desire 530, branded with metropcs crap all over it. The reason I want to do this is bc on that desire 530, it had the ability to play YouTube audio after you open a new tab, app, or manually time out your screen. I want that functionality to be on my M8. I'm not sure which part of the software is responsible for that feature. Is it the firmware? The build? Will someone be able to explain how that works?

Porting over a ROM from a completely different device (or some aspects of that ROM) without a lot of development knowledge, really isn't a feasible thing to attempt.
There are xposed and Magisk modules that do exactly what you want (Youtube background play). And it's relatively easy to root, and install the Magisk or xposed module you desire.

It's true that being off AT&T kills the OTA update feature. However, you can still update by RUU, if you like. Check out the RUU section of my Index thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751432
Mobile hotspot, you can get working if you root, and do the wifi hotspot/tethering mod; or alternately, install a custom ROM. WiFi hotspot is only limited on the stock AT&T software (or other US carrier stock software).
The Sense TV remote app doesn't work anymore, since HTC stopped supporting it. It's got nothing to do with switching to Simple Mobile. The phone's IR blaster will still work with other TV remote apps such as Peel and others.

So someone I know surprised me today by saying he's thinking of purchasing the Hero. See, the thing is that he's not the most tech savvy person in the world, and he admitted that he had hoped I would offer him help in using it and generally improve its usability.
Problem is that I'm a Windows Mobile guy. I really don't know anything more about Android than that it's Google's mobile OS. That's it.
So I was hoping some people here could answer the question I had of whether Android apps work across builds? For example, do the apps made for the HTC Dream work on the Hero?
As of currently, I know Google is making a hell of a lot of builds (Original, Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, and so on), and they seem to be making it at a hyperpace. I also imagine that this might continue for quite a while, so this is an important question to me.
Thank you to all for reading!
Currently all Android phones run the same OS and alle apps works cross-phones. There has been some conflict with apps running on the Hero because of the Sense UI but this can be fixed by turning Sense of or use an application called Bar control wich allows for use of the original UI with ease.
You should tell your friend not to worry, Android is pretty easy and basic in general use.
Dont take my word for gospel but this is my perspective and my experience as a Hero user. I love it and your friend is gonna love it to.
R. Duke, thank you for your answer and reassurance.
I had not realize that all of the Android phones were currently using the same build (I thought the Dream was using the original Android build and Hero was using the newer Cupcake), so I'm glad to hear there will be complete app compatibility.

Most Dreams would have either received an OTA update to 1.5 (Cupcake) or its owners have likely rooted their devices and applied a custom rom, but again these are all likely to be based on Cupcake.

Dave

I'm planning on getting the Sprint HTC Hero in October. Do you know of any conflicts with the following applications:
Astrid
PDANet
Where
Evernote(Web version)
Documents To Go
Sprite Backup
My Backup Pro
Last.fm
GPhone Manager Pro
Astro File Manger
AndExplorer
TasKiller
ReedR News Reader
Flixster
I doubt that any one can tell you definitively as the phone is not out, and even then I doubt someone is going to download and test such a specific list of apps. However, I moved from a G1 to a Hero, and not found a single compatibility problem yet. When the firmware on the G1 went to Cupcake, some apps did break, but in general they were fixed by their devs very quickly.

Dave
Well... there are actually some difference between the HTC Dream and all the other Android phones currently; the Dream have a physical keyboard. Imagine a game that uses the physical keyboard running on a phone with only the virtual keyboard (ScummVM to name one such app). How the hell are you supposed to use a function mapped to the "U" button without a keyboard?
The game Cestos for example have a chat function. The players can chat with each other during matches. Those with a Dream can easily chat while those witrh non-physical keyboards will have to press Menu and then press up the keyboard to start typing (it works but it isn't fluid).
I would like to keep a running list of AT&T-delivered apps from the stock ROM that are safe to freeze/uninstall without causing any loss of essential functionality.
Amazon Kindle
AP Mobile
AT&T Code Scanner
AT&T Family Map
AT&T Hotspots (if you do not use it)
AT&T Navigator
Buddies Now
City ID
Digital Clock
Dual Clock
Featured Apps
Live TV
Media Hub (not AT&T Bloatware, rather Samsung-delivered)
Mini Diary
Mini Paper
QIK Lite (if you do not use stock video chat)
Yahoo Finance
YP
If you have any apps that you have removed and run problem free for at least 48 hours, please let me know and I will update the list.
I'd keep AT&T Hotspots. Without it, you can't use AT&T wi-fi hotspot for free.
Also Yellow Pages, AT&T Family Tree nd Live TV should be added. You can keep Live TV app if you are also an AT&T U-Verse subscriber.
Media Hub is a Samsung Media service (for movie and TV show rental), not bloatware.
QIK Lite is a video chat software so that we can actually use the the front facing camera. You can use Skype as alternative.

Bump...is this list up to date or are there more that can be added?

Someone has created a comprehensive system and bloatware app list: https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...SENVeXlqUm5vV0E&single=true&gid=0&output=html

This is an I9100 specific list. The AT&T version has additional AT&T-delivered bloatware which I'm not sure about.

That list applies to i777 too. I used this list as a reference when I removed bloatware from stock ROM. AT&T specific bloatware are obvious because they have the name AT&T in it Example: AT&T Navigator.
The above linked spreadsheet also explains why some apk should not be removed. I don't use Kies. So even if the spreadsheet has labeled an apk as "Green" but only because it's Kies dependency, I know that I can remove that apk.

I'm pretty sure official ICS update will be released via Kies or Kies Mini instead of OTA because of potential bootloader change. Bootloader in OTA = brick. So it is good to keep Kies related apks around.

I wouldn't want to go back to stock ROM now that I have got used to the custom mods like modded power button menu, 14-toggle notification bar, etc
Let's see if I can stay patient enough to wait for custom ICS ROMs. If not, then I can always get back the required system apks for OTA update. But again, that's very very unlikely.
How to Cast your One Max Screen to Chromecast
Hi everyone! Long time reader but first time posting.
Anyway, since Google finally released Chromecast 1.7.4, we can finally mirror our Android Screen in its entirety as it was shown at the Google I/O conference a little while back. However... only for certain devices. That list of supported devices mentions the HTC One M7 and Google Play edition of the M7... but no HTC One Max. Hmmmm.
Well, since the M7 and the One Max have the same chipset, this should work with no problems. However, once the Chromecast APK was updated, I didn't see the fabled "Cast Screen" button. What a pity.
But no fear! It DOES indeed work for the HTC One Max - and if your anxious to have it working now rather than waiting for Google to eventually update the APK, read on...
Here's how I got near perfect Screen Mirroring on Chromecast...
- Be sure you are on Android 4.4.2+ (I'm on 4.4.4 CM-11 Nightly). I would assume this should work on a Rooted Stock Rom.
- Make sure you are Rooted
1. Update your Chromecast APK to be 1.7.4 if it hasn't auto-updated already.
2. We need to edit your Build.Prop file - so download an app such as BuildProp Editor from the Play Store. Since the file is located in /system/build.prop - you need to be Rooted to edit this.
3. Open your Editor and give it Super User Permissions.
4. Make a backup of your Build.Prop file if the app has the function to do so.
5. Scroll down until you find "ro.product.device". It should read either "t6", "t6spr", or "t6zw" for International, Sprint and Verizon models respectively.
6. Change the "ro.product.device" string to "m7" -- without quotes of course.
7. Reboot your phone.
8. Reboot your Chromecast.
Now, if you Open the Chromecast APK App, once you connect to your Chromecast on the network, you should see the "Cast Screen" button in the pull-out menu of the App,
It's actually very fluid, hardly any noticeable lag. Haven't tested sound yet since I'm writing this at the office and the Chromecast here is just connected to a computer monitor.
I'm currently on a Nightly build of CM 11 for the HTC One Max... and I would have to assume this would work on a Stock Rom - as long as its Rooted.
Let me know how this works for you guys!

This method is working so far on my Verizon One Max...
Sent from my NuSense6 One Max
I have a Sprint HTC One M9. Mobile data and Wi-Fi hot spot functions are enabled on this phone. I want to add these functions to this phone. I have been looking almost everywhere now, but cannot find info about this. Is this possible, or do I have to install a full custom ROM Android?
Thanks in advance!
Hi
What are the problems/ issues of using an old version if the phone is only used for calls/ texting/ email (not GMail)? After rooting a device and removing Bloatware and Google what's the potential issues in using the device? I only use my phone for calling and texting and keeping notes, some photos, few emails. No banking/ shopping apps, no social media. I like having a very basic phone, so most of the upgrades in the UI would probably not be important to me. I plan to upgrade at some point but I need to have a phone with a 4" or smaller display and it's got to be around $50 used.
I have a couple of older Samsungs that are small, which I prefer. One is running 4.4.2, is rooted and is in the process of removing most Google apps ( I have installed the Brave browser but limited data use) and the other is even older running Gingerbread that I plan to re-purpose for a signal generator but might consider using as backup.
New to Android and still learning, so any advice is appreciated.
Thanks
PS. I was planning on moving to Lineage but I managed to buy a Samsung with an unlockable bootloader so just rooted it and started removing stuff I don't need. Seems to be OK for the most part.

Hello,
there might be some downsides, one of them being that your device doesn't have the latest security patches implemented. Another one is that some apps might not work anymore as their minimum API version is higher than your current OS.
Beside this, there are no real downsides of running an older Android version. If you got your device setup according to your needs, then there is no real issue at all in case you don't store any sensitive information (bank account username/password for example, but this applies to all mobile devices in my opinion) on your device.
