XZ1 & XZ1 Compact: LB root & DRM backup/restore Bounty Thread - Sony Xperia XZ1 Guides, News, & Discussion

Bounty for locked bootloader root and/or DRM backup + restore for Sony Xperia XZ1 lineup: XZ1 and XZ1 Compact
Introduction
For years, Sony Xperia flagships have offered a great almost-stock Android experience and high build quality which makes them appealing to many. The main downside is rooting of Xperia devices using the official Sony method requires unlocking of the bootloader, and thus loss of TA partition and the DRM keys in it. You can NOT undo/recover these.
The effect is permanent loss of Sony proprietary features - those interested in exact details on what you lose can find years of info on Google - but too long didn't google: Audio quality and camera image quality are reduced, some camera features are lost (e.g. noise reduction/photo enhancement in low-light), screen enhancement features are lost (Bravia Engine modes: X-Reality and Super Vivid)
The latest Xperia flagship which could be rooted and DRM restored was the 2016 Xperia XZ - that's a model from over a year ago!

What is bounty and how does it work?
Root bounties have been incredibly successful in creating traction from community members towards finding root methods in many brands of phones in the past.
Xperia devices running Android 4.x: exploits were used to keep the bootloader locked while rooting. Keeping bootloader locked while rooting became more difficult after Lollipop
Xperia devices running Android 5 Lollipop and Android 6 Marshmallow used the 2016 DirtyCow exploit to backup and restore TA partition instead so DRM features could be used after unlocking bootloader/rooting.
No 2017 Xperia devices and Xperia running Android 7 Nougat or higher have been successfully rooted while maintaining DRM features as of writing this post.
The Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact will ship with Android 8 Oreo.
This thread was created because the only bounty thread for a 2017 model, the XZ Premium, has not gained much traction. With Xperia Standard and Compact flagship models traditionally having higher demand than the Xperia Premium variant, we can get more awareness and a higher reward with an XZ1 & XZ1 Compact bounty campaign.
Historically, the success in getting locked bootloader root or DRM backup for one Xperia flagship makes it significantly easier to achieve the same for the sibling model, and other Xperia devices (e.g. Xperia Z3/Z3 Compact bounty from 2014).
Bounty claim requirements:
In order to claim this bounty, refer to the following steps:
Be the first person to create or find a method in the latest available software release on the aforementioned devices to either (A) obtain root access without unlocking bootloader or compromising/affecting the TA partition in any way; or (B) root method that allows TA partition to be backed up before root process AND restored after root process; or (C) an entirely different way that allows TA partition and DRM features to be remain usable by retention, restoration or other, after the device has been rooted.
Give proof of point #1 by posting an adequate quantity of screenshots to illustrate it, together with step by step instructions, in a fashion such that everyone can follow them and reproduce the exploit;
Wait for at least 10% of pledgers (fastest quorum achieved between per capita and per pecunia criteria*) to give confirmation about the method functionality;
Claim your bounty via PM from pledgers. This first post will also be updated with your username.
*i.e. the fastest between 10% of the number of people and 10% of the amount of money pledged as bounty.
Like other bounty threads, this first post will be updated with the username of the successful bounty claimer upon verification of the root/DRM preservation method.
Total pledge: $856
Updated Nov 7, 2017
Note: Payment will be processed between each member and the bounty collector via PM on an individual basis. Original amounts in non-USD currency listed in brackets, exchange rates may vary for these pledges.

Samsung's first Tizen phone: the Samsung Z

Well, it looks like Samsung finally managed to do what it has been trying to do for a painfully long time — the Korean manufacturer has made its first Tizen-powered phone official. Called the Samsung Z, the phone features a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display of 1280×720 resolution and is powered a quad-core 2.3GHz processor (most like a Snapdragon 800), and runs on version 2.2.1 of Tizen. The Z comes with a new look that should come as a breath of fresh air for those who have gotten bored of Samsung’s design language on Android devices (let’s face it, who hasn’t?), though the overall design seems to be along the same lines as the company’s previous efforts.
The Samsung Z also sports a fingerprint and heart rate sensor and comes with features such as Download Booster and Ultra Power Saving Mode, things that debuted on the Galaxy S5. The hardware specs include 2GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera with the usual camera modes that we’ve seen on Samsung’s Android phones (and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera), 16GB of internal storage and a microSD slot, connectivity features including LTE-A, NFC and an IR sensor, and a 2,600 mAh battery. It’s basically a mix of the previous three Galaxy S flagships, and for a first device with a new OS, doesn’t really have anything impressive or different to offer.

Hmm..
Well, the specs are good, no doubt in that. But, when it comes down to software, never believe in samsung, coz they ain't good in that field. After bada, I ain't trying anything that comes out from the software kitchen of samsung. Although, the ability to run android apps is a relief.

By the look of it, it looks like they took a lot of "design inspiration" from the Sony Xperia Series.

Absolute no go for me.
The Z will launch in Russia in Q3 and expand to other markets later on, and will also be showcased at Samsung’s Tizen developer conference on June 3rd. However, as Samsung has said in the past, don’t expect to see any Tizen phone in the US and some European markets,..

Xiaomi Mi5: Reviews, Info, Benchmarks, Discussion

Hi Everyone! In this thread I'll try to gather information related to Xiaomi Mi5 phone.
Before we start, let's review the specs of Mi 5 in brief:
- Snapdragon 820, up to *4GB RAM + 128GB UFS 2.0 (*For Mi 5 PRO ONLY)
- 600Mbps 4G+ download speeds, VoLTE
- 3D *ceramic/glass body, weighs 129g (*Ceramic body for Mi 5 PRO ONLY)
- 5.15” 16 LED light display, 3D ceramic/glass body
- Front fingerprint sensor
- 16MP 4-axis OIS + 2µm-pixel 4MP camera
- 3000mAh battery, Quick Charge 3.0
- Full feature NFC
- MIUI based on Android M
- Available in Gold, White, Black (*Mi 5 PRO only in BLACK)
Display
The Mi5 comes with a 5.2-inch display that the company says is extraordinarily vibrant. It has used special technology to increase the contrast and vibrancy. The brightness of the phone is 600 nits, which is about 70% more than most phones. The display uses special sunlight detection technology that automatically enhances the colors when it senses outdoor conditions.
Design
The Mi5’s design is a continuation of the subdued aesthetics of Mi Note. “It was only natural to inherit all the beauty. The phone is built with high-grade Zirconia ceramic material at the back. The material scores about 8 out of 10 in hardness, double the score of steel. Ceramic is about 75% more expensive than even high-grade glass, Barra said, and has been manufactured in a 16-step process.
Camera
The camera has a more advanced optical image stabilization, which negates not just static shake, but also transverse movement, which results in better quality photos in high-zoom situations. The company showed the 4D OIS in action by comparing the picture of a shaking Mi5 with an iPhone 6S.The sensor is Sony IMX298 with 16 MP resolution and PDAF support and deep trench iteration. The model is one of the first to get the IMX298 sensor. The front camera includes a 4 MP sensor with 2µm-pixel.

Too costly in India, it won't be as hot as was expected, almost 40% less sales most probably.
Price is similar to one plus 7 so not worth it.

One plus 7 and one plus 7 pro are different devices with different price point, is that too hard to understand?

OP7 starts at INR 33K for 6+128 configuration. K20 Pro costs INR 31K for 8+256 option. How exactly is that "similar"?
Also, why do you feel it's "too costly" if you are willing to pay significantly more for a OP7? Just because it has clean OOS?
Is there any info. on the LTE basebands on the Indian device? Is it the same as the Chinese hardware wise?
My question is if we can buy it from AliExpress and flash Indian ROM on it for Band 20 if they're the same hardware wise.

I am using OP3 as my main phone til this day, so yes while the development scene helps, i feel MIUI is not bad itself minus the ads. I am still on OOS stock ROM, with a custom kernel only. I feel Android has reached to a point where custom ROMs won't make much sense expect for when the device has lapsed its original official software update window (2 years). I am still using OOS Oreo on OP3 and it works just fine.

Many consider the Huawei P40 Pro to be the best photography phone on the market right now. TIPA WORLD AWARDS nominated the phone as the best smartphone for photos, thanks to the amazing camera technology featured on the device. The P40 Pro has a 50MP camera with a 1/1.28 inch ultra vision sensor. It can take in a great deal of light which means photos in low-light situations look amazing. Combine this with the real-time depth-sensing camera, and you can create professional-level bokeh effects in your photos.
Use the 100x SuperZoom array to get detailed shots of objects far away. Choose between the 3x optical zoom, the 20x hybrid zoom, or the 100x max zoom, for the best zoom camera in any smartphone.
The Huawei P40 Pro also comes with a 40MP ultra-wide cine camera. This camera features a 1/1.54 inch sensor, ultra low-light video, ultra slow-motion video, telephoto video and 4K timelapse. It’s a feature-packed cinematic video camera designed to give the user all the tools they need to get the perfect shot.

I would like to have more details, from an end user's standpoint, on how to access the apps that are absent from the Huawei App Gallery, and whether there will be some workflow to be able to get them working on recent Huawei phones.
I would like to know how will they continue to build their ecosystem compared to Android. Also, what kind of alternatives they are willing to support for the users to load other roms in case their solution does not live up to expectations.
I want to see a live Harmony OS mobile device along with Huawei taking on Android in a big way..
I would like to see what will happen with unlocking bootloader in future huawei phones.
Official use of custom ROMs
I would like to see Huawei find a way for us to officially use custom ROMs without root (since they Don't use gms) as a way to attract geeks and provide a truly brilliant software experience with the truly amazing hardware experience. Imagine that
I would like to see if Huawei have any plan to enter the recent craze of gaming phones and how they would support gaming phones with their new HMS Core 5.0, HarmonyOS and EMUI 11. Also, what kind of flexibility and dev-friendly commitments they will offer to the developers compared to their rivals while building apps on AppGallery platform.
I would like see Tablet Edition OS based on EMUI or Harmony OS and at least software update support for three years.
New Huawei OS
I would like to know what Huawei does different from Google and Apple ecosystems, that would make it unique to me to use it over them? What will you bring to the table that will make us jump to that bandwagon?
In addition to everything described I would like to know about the strategy for saving game data in the cloud, participating in early access or beta testing apps, improving developer feedback by encouraging developer efforts.
I want to see the launch of Harmony OS in some Huawei Smartphones and more investment in the AppGallery
I am expecting a better support in software upgradation. atleast for 3 years.
I'm waiting for harmony os
I would like to know more about the apps that I would have to use instead of the google apps/android ecosystem and how it would change my cellphone experience.
Would love to see Harmony and the new ecosystem Huawei is trying to create. Also, for how long are they going to support it, so we don't have to purchase new devices for new updates or whether they would allow custom mods to be made easily.
I'd like Huawei to announce they will support bootloader unlocks so that we can develop custom Android ROMS for them and port alternative OSes like UBports and postmarketOS to them.
Given the current situation, I would like to know what steps Huawei is taking to ensure they have as many of the mainstream apps as possible on their app store.
I would like to know how Huawei could possibly give developers more rights, like bootloader unlocking. I would love to see us being able to install play services or microG whenever necessary, without strange "backups".
However, it would be nice to know if Huawei could free Android a bit more, as many features became proprietary in the last years with google. Who needs open source android when almost every app needs to rely on non-standarized proprietary services?
I want to see Huawei talk about their plans for the future, whether its a completely new os or a new phone with innovative technology (possible a phone with an under-display selfie camera?).
Hopefully they come up with a new os though, competition is always good
