What is AOKP?
AOKP stands for Android Open Kang Project. It is a custom ROM distribution for several high-end Android devices. The name is a play on the word kang and AOSP (Android Open Source Project). The name was sort of a joke, but it just stuck, just like our infatuation with unicorns.
We fork the source code of Android that Google puts out in the open with every major version release, and we then add the magical unicorn bytes (read: we add some of the coolest features that are both useful and make your ROM awesome).
With AOKP, you can generally do a lot more with your device than what you could do with the original firmware that came installed on it.
Why AOKP ?
We were waiting for when you'd ask this.
There are a variety of reasons why a hilly billy Android user, on a bright sunny day, would suddenly start using AOKP and loving it.
For one, AOKP is lightweight. Most OEMs provide a heavy UI layer over Android and have loads of bloatware (i.e. apps that not everyone use every day, but you cannot remove because they're "baked in" by default). Since AOKP is built upon vanilla Android source, it has neither of the above.
Also AOKP has features that you will not find on your stock firmware. You can have a multitude of toggles to quickly flip a lot of your phone's settings right at your fingertips, or you can launch apps quickly from any screen using our Ribbons.
You can change almost each and every aspect of the OS, from its looks to the way it functions, with total freedom. And did we tell you, AOKP helps you make tacos?

Tried it for a few hours, the rom is pretty snappy, really fast. I have only encountered 1 problem so far: when the phone goes to sleep all data activity is halted until it wakes up. Any hint for a fix? not using greenify or the built in wakelock blocker, just in case anyone asks

Fantastic news, will definitely be giving this a test drive. Many thanks.
Any special installation instructions, or just the usual routine?
Do we need to also install latest SU? Thanks again.

As a heads up to others flashing for the first time. Bootanimation froze for me....Don't panic all is well and booted perfectly.
I have been running this Rom for over 12 hours now. Only (minor) problem is the settings have stopped pop up on boot. Other than that no problem at all, no random reboots, no freezes. It's very smooth and fast and I have experienced no lag. I guess it's time to make it official
Would like to see heads up notifications implemented (or have I missed them somewhere?)
Many thanks.
EDIT:
Annoying little bug that I am experiencing. Cannot follow a link and open another app while another is open.
Example: can't open play store by clicking on a link from G+ have to close G+ first. Can anyone else confirm this?
Really nice rom, many options and quite stable for me, only bootanimation is broken but rom does his work perfectly and without warm my phone
I forgot to mention: I am also experience settings fc always on reboot ( small bug, app works good after); RAM management is really good, i've 16 apps open and all is smooth
Well, I've tried every LP ROM (except SOKP) that is published here in xda-dev, and all of them had real lag problems, if not immediately then within a whole day after the flashing - to the state where the ROM is unusable for me (can't even answer incoming calls) without rebooting. Of course I am not blaming anyone, all the devs here did a wonderful job getting LP to our old phone model, but I do not want to experiment any more with such ROMs. Is this one different in this sense? Is it CM-based?

CyanogenMod is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. You will need to provide your own Google Applications package (gapps). CyanogenMod does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.
All the source code for CyanogenMod is available in the CyanogenMod Github Repo. And if you would like to contribute to CyanogenMod, please visit our Gerrit Code Review. Your changelog is whatever was merged into gerrit.

Thanks a lot for this rom! Just one question, is it still necessary to flash cm11 and let it completely boot before flashing this cm12.1 rom? Thanks in advance!

So, how is this rom working so far? Is ambient display working Ok? GPS? Thanks! Oh, one last question, what custom recovery do you think it's better? TWRP? Philz? Thanks in advance!

Ambient display is as flawed as cm12 and I believe GPS is the same if you haven't done the fix from the other thread, but I'll test it on my way home to check

My camera kept messing up then after a few tries it's working flawlessly. Are you getting "can't reach camera" or something similar?
Sent from my Moto X using XDA Free mobile app
After toggling tortch in drawer its icon dissapear and cant be toggled off, some themes not working properly. Xposed not working, camera not working, chrome is crashing but thats probably apps fault due to 5.1 android version. Other than that rom is faster with better animations and visual things. Going back to 5.0.

DEVICE DISCLAIMER:
I DON'T OWN THE DEVICE. TESTING ON THE SPECIFIC DEVICE WILL BE LIMITED TO TESTERS
Krexus was born out of a simple necessity. The latest releases of stock Android (namely lollipop and marshmallow) were pretty close to my idea of a perfect android ROM, yet missing some elements, which are meant to be included in stock Android, at least for me. Starting from a clean AOSP environment, only specific features and fixes are included, which are personally tested ON HAMMERHEAD, with one goal in mind. To create a stock like android ROM, "as it should be".
This means, and I mean it, a ROM like how stock nexus image should be, for me.
This isn't going to get bloated. Most UI "features" are already there.
This isn't going to start picking commits relentlessly, I will test them personally and only add things that 1) work like they should 2) would fit in a stock ROM.
This isn't going to be updated very quickly. Only security and bug fixes will be pushed out ASAP.
This is going to follow Google's & AOSP guidelines as closely as I can.
And lastly, this is first and foremost a ROM about Nexus 5 (hammerhead). This is my personal device, this is where I test the ROM. angler, bullhead, flo, mako, SHAMU builds are provided AS-IS. With that in mind, I have to say that the google+ community has been flashing shamu builds for a looong time and hasn't come up with anything, so I thought I'd share it here, too.
That said, welcome aboard!

@KreAch3R I'm glad you left the double tap to wake feature in. To be honest, I like this feature when it is automatically included in the ROM rather than have to try and either find a custom kernel or use kernel auditor.

That was the reason I wanted to leave it in, too. Krexus tries to never deviate from stock, only fix/include necessary stuff. I'm glad it works well now, it seems that I was missing some commits on the device tree, but I found them after @BeansTown106 let me know about them.
This is one of the best stock rooted ROMs out and runs great. Thank you for bringing it to us here on XDA.

Hi George-
I saw your changelog update and I didn't understand, can you explain how to use tasker for turning on the LED or modifying the color ?
Krexus/Despair is a lovely combo - giving it a spin now!

About Us:
Dirty Unicorns is a project that started out with no name. It was a project that was first based off AOKP back in the early days of Jelly Bean. In the early days it was just a one man show on one device, the EVO 3D. Since then, many others have joined the project and it has grown exponentially.
We have seen a lot of talent contribute to this project of ours. Big or small, the focus was always on contributing to the community. That is ultimately why we do what we do. After Jelly Bean, we decided to move to a new base, OmniROM. While AOKP was fun, OmniROM proved to be even more exciting base because it challenged us to see what we could do with a project that had different goals in mind. We learned a lot and again, gain contributors. With Lollipop, we moved to an AOSP base with a lot of patches from CAF to make our older devices function as they should. We grew even more and learned a whole lot more.
It has been an awesome learning experience and is still not over! We are still learning every day and continue to move forward. Lastly, we DO NOT accept, nor ask, for donations. We don't believe in that. Everything that is necessary to keep this project going is out of our own pocket. Gerrit, Jenkins, Websites, Devices, etc. We will never ask for a dime. All we do ask, is that you have patience, search, read and try to enjoy the process with us!!

Bugs added to OP. Same as any other ROM for this device. Home Button press doesn't wake up the device. Fingerprint does wake it up. I think it's not big deal.

Yes it detects fast charging and fast charging works too as the rom is made from official sources and about battery life it depends upon the usage , I play games clash of clans and clash royale and i get 8hr 30min sot in 1 cycle P.s:- By default the kernel is set on performance change it to interactive using kernel auditor. you will get a good battery life

Nothing special, this one is updated one with stability improvements. the official one is V6.5 and this one is V6.6.
and probably this one is gonna be the official one soon, I already applied for official, and the previous dev is gonna drop this rom soon, he is a super busy guy.

Nice, keep it alive bro
I am using the previous ROM (marked as official). Will you be doing monthly updates with security patches? I also have a rather big issue with the official ROM. Aafter rooting the ROM with Magisk, my Nexus 5 reboots itself from time to time, sometimes when getting a call. I am mainly interested in having an actively supported ROM and I like AEX, it gives me everything I need without installing Magisk modules (I am just using Magisk to root it).

You can check this out as well. don't worry about updates & security patches, I'm giving my best for this device. time to time I will update this rom ( monthly basis ). and I have no clue about your rooting issue because I don't have the logs. so I can't say anything about it. the truth is N5 is now older enough ( still a legend )& believe me it's really hard to make it future proof with updates.
my recommendations are: flash the modified twrp twrp-3.3.1-HH-hammerhead & use the pico or nano version of Gapps for better performance.
If you face any kind of issues with this rom as like previous rom then don't forget to share your problem with me. I'm here to help.

No you don't need to, I'm using it on my nexus 5 without partitioning and it's smooth and actually the best 9.0 ROM I've ever used.

Repartition is totally necessary step but not mandatory. you can use the modified twrp & increase the system space for better experience.
Demoxing, will this rom become official AEX or EnesSastim will finally update his, have any info?

Buddy, I totally understood your situation, but I can't add or remove stuff from this rom because of guidelines, but i can highly suggest you use the modified twrp for better experience. it increases your system 1GB to 1.5GB. or better to wait for my pixel experience rom its more stable and smoother. ( currently under maintenance).
Does this rom have the notification bug?
EJ: Do I have to have whatsapp open for messages to arrive? Since it does not work in second plane
PD: Thank you for keeping our N5 up to date!
