1. Go to /system/usr/keylayout
2. Rename the Generic.kl to Generic.txt
3. Open this file with an text editor*
4. Search for WINK and replace it with CAMERA
5. Rename it back to Generic.kl (otherwise you won't be able to press any hardware button after reboot
6. Restart your device
you can change Bixby Button to several things but i prefer CAMERA on this great note8 .
There's Root available?
Root is available via Magisk and Super SU. Exynos only though.
Magisk:

I've been looking how to apply theses steps o a Samsung Galaxy with Lineage OS.
You can follow the steps as described in the post, but you won't find button 703 on the "Generic.kl" file. You have to search for a file named "gpio_keys.kl" on the same folder:
/root/system/usr/keylayout/
Click to collapse
Also, I've found other commands to try if you wish:
APP_SWITCH - Recent apps button
ASSIST - Google Assistant (with item display on the screen)
CALCULATOR - Open default calculator app
CALENDAR - Open default calendar
CALL - Open default call app
CAMERA - Open camera
CONTACTS - Open default contacts app
EXPLORER - Favorite internet browser
HOME - Homebutton
MEDIA_PLAY_PAUSE - Play pause media
MESSAGE - Default messenger
MUSIC - starts your favorite music player
POWER - Power menu
QPANEL_ON_OFF - Notification area
SYSRQ - Take a screenshot
VOICE_ASSIST - Google Assistant
VOLUME_DOWN - Sets volume down
VOLUME_MUTE - Volume media (set default media volume in phone setting)
VOLUME_UP - Sets volume up
All the steps described above have worked for me on a Galaxy S8 and a Galaxy S9+, with Lineage OS 15.1 and Lineage OS 16.

1. is it possible to assign another function to those 2 buttons (left and right above dialpad)
2. is that 'new' menu available as a .cab?

Hello to all, i was bored so i started to modding the samsung's camera app. I tried to change the audio quality (from 12.8kbps, 8khz, amr => 128kbs, 32khz, aac) but our phone/kernel doesnt support aac encoding (?)
I also tried to change the output 3gpp video to mp4 without luck.
I managed to remove the low battery limitation which was preventing you to take photos/videos when your battery was lower than 15 percent.
Features
Removed low battery limitation.
Power button acts as Shutter button. (Only for camera, not for camcorder)
Geotagging toggle option.
Download
v1: Megaupload
v2: Megaupload
How to install
A) Using CWM recovery
Put the zip in your sdcard.
Go in CWM recovery
Install zip from sdcard
Choose zip from sdcard
Find it and press the home button
When it finishes press reboot system now
B) Using Root Explorer
Extract the Camera.apk from the zip (system/app/)
Put it in your sdcard
Navigate to it with root explorer, and copy it to /system/app/
Reboot your phone
Note: This works on deodexed roms. If your rom is odexed remove /system/app/Camera.odex file with root explorer.
Changelog
v1: Removed low battery limitation (initial release)
v2: Power button acts as Shutter button. (bug with home button, use back button to exit camera app)
Rom chefs - feel free to use this mod in your roms, but please give proper credit for the work and click my thanks button. Thank you.

Awesome! I hope the mod gives the camera more useful edits.
Added how to install. Next target: Enable power button as shutter button in videocamera too!
'Self-photography' is impossible with the touchscreen button!
The power-button Mod is a good improvment. Thankyou for that
This might sound odd to you. But how about making the Menu button act as the shutter button? Its at a more convenient place and the back button already serves the purpose of quitting the app.

First you need to know how to root your phone then install SuperSu app, most root methods includes this. The using a root explorer(Root Explorer) edit build.prop which is located in /system/build.prop and open it and edit it. Add these lines to the build.prop
Code:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
To disable capacitive buttons, download Xposed Installer and then download Xposed additions, add the three buttons, select screen on and disable all.
thanks , i did it using simple control app then edit the keys in the system by add # to them and that work

Hey Guys. This is a tutorial to bring out the best in your phone camera by installing GCAM. In this case we will be installing a made for exynos variant of gcam called ZGCAM. Same software optimization but built for exynos.
To get all features follow this step by step guide. (HDR+, PANORAMA, LENS BLUR,VIDEO ETC)
First download this apk from my media fire link. (The actual website will push ads to you which no one likes)
Link removed.
Download and Install this .APK file.
At first when you install it, only video and other minor features will work, but camera mode won't work.
To fix this we must use a custom config file to use ZGCAM for our specifications.
First Go to your default files app
When u install ZGCAM a new folder will popup in your internal storage (Phone Not SD) and it will be called GCam
If a "Configs" folder isn't present, create one (inside gcam directory).
After this download this file - M31CONFIG.xml
https://www.mediafire.com/file/u95oyhsvrceqjwe/M31CONFIG.xml/file
Move this file from Downloads to Gcam-Configs folder.
After this open ZGCAM (on the home screen it will be called camera with a red shutter logo)
Touch and hold a black are in the ui at the bottom for around 3 seconds (not any of the buttons). After that an option will popup, saying RESTORE CONFIGS, and after that because u moved the config file, u will get an option to restore this config.
After that u will have working GCAM for your samsung 31.

For whoever is using a custom ROM and the bixby button is either disabled or cannot customize with the usual Bixby remap app, I have found a solution: (Root needed for #1, #2 works without root)
>Solution #1 (First try this, if it doesn't work - it didn't work for me for some reason - try solution #2):
With tips from the community, I have found these possible locations to edit the bixby key. Use root file explorer:
- /root/system/usr/keylayout/gpio_keys.kl
- /system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl
- /vendor/usr/keylayout/gpio_keys.kl (?)
Search for key 703 in each of these files. If it does not exist, try to add it manually. Effects take place after a reboot.
Use this guide here for more details: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...on-with-simple-double-and-long-press.3839544/
>Solution #2 - Button Mapper: Remap your keys (Not my app)
First, try to see if you can remap the bixby key with this app. For me, it did not work again, but I found a nice workaround:
In the app, instead of changing "Bixby Button", go to "Add Buttons". Now, press the bixby key. The app should detect the key, and finally you can set it to whatever you want.
(But keep in mind, for this option, it is necessary to purchase the pro version).

Same problem as me, I didn't find 703 anywhere.. you can try manually adding it though, maybe it will work. Like:
key 703 CAMERA
save, reboot device, check if works.
Remember to save file with .kl extension, not .txt, or buttons wont work

if as you said you cant find anywhere "703" in the file, write at the end just like the others, (you can open and edit the file straight away from the root explorer)
key 703 [desired command]
for example
key 703 CAMERA
then save file and reboot phone. If it works, after pressing the bixby key the default camera app should open.
Some people say it works, for me it didn't work though.

It didn't work for me either. I worked like that, but I also typed something like this, but without success.
# input_fw Intelligent Key for Dream
key 703 CAMERA
When I change everything, I save it, after that I change the txt name to kl. It needs Check Permissions after that, and I don't see it in Root Explorer. Maybe you need to go to Settings, select the app and check the permissions? I do not know.

Weird - first check in Magisk that root explorer has root permissions. Second try to edit the file at once without first chaning to .txt - most editors support it, no need to change. If that still doesnt work, try a different root file explorer app. For me worked "root browser".
