Tab S3 worth it ? Get a Tab S2 instead ? Wifi-Bugs ? - Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 Questions & Answers

Good Morning Everyone,
Have been researching this tablet and wanted to find out if its worth it. Been reading the forum and it looks like this tab has some serious WiFi bugs and battery drain. I Have a galaxy note pro 12.2 now and its been great but is showing its age. Wanted to upgrade to the tab s3 for the spen as i really like it but i see many complaining about the s3 here on the forum. Doesn't look like Samsung is going to issue a fix for the battery drain issue. So wanted to get you guys advice who have the device. Get a Tab S2 that's getting quite a bit older now or the s3. Let me know. Thanks.

I got the tab s3 for school for taking notes, and I really like it. The wifi bug is annoying but you can turn off wifi and then the standby time is fantastic. I can get 8 to 10 hours of on screen time which is nice.

I’m hesitant due to the fact that if Wi-Fi is off during sleep I’m assuming notifications and such will not come down until you wake of the device? This seems to me like I’m limiting the use of the device for the sake of the battery life. With your Wi-Fi always on are you able to get through the day or what kind of usage do you see?

I could get through the day, overnight it would lose around 20 percent overnight maybe 30

Bug and stability fixes. My battery life has improved and it's not draining like in the past. Also, Netflix HDR support was added.

I tested out the LTE version SM-T825 of this tablet as someone said that this version doesn't have the wifi bug but that is not the case, it still has the very same drain issue. I did notice, however, that the drain issue went away when I was at a friend's place using an old integrated comcast router/modem, but that brings little comfort since it seems that most common routers do cause the drain on this tablet. And again in my home with the 2X WRT1900AC, my old Tab S2, S7 and current S8+ had no issues with wifi power drain so this is definitely something in the Tab S3 that causes the issue with most modern routers (tried just the 2.4 Ghz channel, an ASUS 68U and N11, an older netgear and the drain was still present).

What's the build date on your tablet? I wonder if Samsung made some hardware revisions and some users have the drain and some do not.
Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk

Nope, the LTE one was a korea model from July and it still had it.

I always keep Wi-Fi off with the screen off. I can sometimes go two days without touching my device. So keeping Wi-Fi off is important. I use my device to take notes and chat and listen to music. Very good tablet.

Personally, I think the 2015 (2016?) Tab A with Spen is a better deal than the s3. If you can live with a tablet that only has 16gb of storage. I'm not sure what the wifi bug is, but the most recent patch removed my biggest annoyance: "Samsung keyboard has stopped" messages when the keyboard wasn't active and the screen was rotated by an app. (intermittent, but frequent).
I also found a 10.1 tablet to be just a little too large for daily use.
Would I buy this tablet again? Sure, I like it a lot. Would I look closely at other options? Definitely. Windows tablets with pen support are pretty close to this thing's price. And MS Office's pen support it pretty useful, and cross platform.

See I was between this and the ,Microsoft surface 3. I decided to get the tab s3 because it's newer and can fast charge. The surface 3 charges so slowly due to being a micro USB charger. But honestly this is a great tablet. And really good battery life. My surface pro 4, which is a full windows tablet, can barely get 5 hours of usage. I'm 35 hours in now on a single charge with 2 hours of sot and 78% left.

I just got my s3, I wouldn't pay $600 for it, but I got mine open box in perfect condition from Best Buy for only $380. Definitely worth it at that price.

Finally made the plunge and got one for £450 with a second pen.

I got mine a while ago for $449 and the keyboard case for $60. It's got a bit of lag when playing some games, but for me the pen is worth it. I have it set to turn off wifi when the tablet goes to sleep, and the standby time is really nice. I'm down to 40% battery with 6hrs on screen time and 18hrs off charger. The iPad pro looks very intriguing, but I'm not a fan of having to leave Bluetooth on and charging the Apple Pencil.

My iphone 3GS was on its last legs and I was basically bored with iphones in general. The S3 happened to come out at the perfect time and I got hooked by all of the hype. Other than a few minor annoyances like battery life and wifi connectivity, and of course migrating all my stuff over from the iphone which was somewhat of a pain, I'm glad I switched.
was time for me to upgrade, i was bored with iOS, and have always been very pleased with google. this looked like it was going to be a great phone and i was excited to start using android so i preordered it--so far so good :good:
Well, there are a few things I love that are unique to the gs3 & a lots of things you can find on other phones also..
Unique to gs3
-2gb ram
-First US carrier device that is buttery smooth, so I didn't have to spring premium price for an international variant and suffer slower data speeds
-for my T mobile account, this is the first 720p device that is Tmo branded, so I can take advantage of the 42mbs hspa+, while enjoying tru HD
-The first Android device that is identical across US carriers (this is the greatest advantage in my opinion), so that development may be more unified
This phone is the complete package in my opinion, the only way Samsung could've satisfied me any more, would've been a vanilla OS, but hey, I knew that wasn't going to happen!

2GB RAM, Power Saving mode (only ~5% per hour while idle, could only even get near that on the Epic while running cm7 with some tweaking and the extended 1800mah battery), NFC/Google Wallet - just last night bought a Slurpee on Google's dime, thanks Google! (plus NFC stuff is really fun, I can put the phone in my car and it'll automatically turn off wifi, enable 3g, enable GPS, turn volume up and launch navigation - how fun is that?).
Not super impressed with the GPU and wished it could handle higher bitrate 1080p (esp when output to another device) but that's really just a minor gripe of mine. Battery could of course always be better (when in my lifetime we can have similar performance with 24 hours screen-on time I'll finally shut up about battery life). S Voice doesn't really do it for me, but voice controls for while in the car in general is a good thing. Also not super impressed with the screen protection quality, my girlfriend made one call and her not-even-diamond earrings caused a little pattern of scratches into it - so much for scratch resistant. Hardly the end of the world though.
Mostly? After coming from the Epic and having to jump to custom ROMs almost immediately I'm impressed with Samsung actually putting out a device that seems to be mostly flawless. I almost didn't go with them this time around after the Epic going through GPS issues of varying sorts and requiring custom ROMs to do what should of been stock (the whole team behind cm7/9 development on the epic is fantastic). Everything works well, touchwiz is not all that intrusive or annoying in ICS once customized to my liking.

Unless you've misspoken, will it turn on the 3G once you enable navigation? I'm just about to set up that tectile for my car as well, and I know there isn't an option to toggle 3g like wifi.

There is as an option in the NFC Task Launcher but it may just be disabling Wifi and automatically attaching to 3G in that case, I set it up as an action regardless.
I had a GNex on Verizon. I had a few bad experiences with VZW, they put me on a promotion that I was told I could keep if I added another line,....they dropped me from it. They have had lots of data problems with their network this year. The Nexus even with the extended battery would, at the most, with AOKP on it and Franco kernal, gave me 2.5 hours of screen time. A few other times they lied about things.
Got tired of Big Red. So I decided it was worth it to pay the ETF and jump to T-Mo. Now I am saving money on an unlimited plan for me and my wife. No more dealing with LTE radios EATING battery life alive. Im getting 20+mb down on HSPA+ and the GS3 is getting 4-5hours of screen on time over 15+ hours.
Not looking back.
Samungs inovation and continuing improvement in technology. And the fact that its the best Android phone todate.
It does anything other phones can while it does everything other phones cant. I hope that makes sense. In other words, its the best phone on the market.

Ahhh... I've still got my Sensation, and I was actually using it primarily while I waited on the GS3! The sensation was one of the most exciting phones to get, it was such a jump up from everything else at that time! I had gotten kinda bored with the GS2, so I was using it for like two months solid. Sadly, I'm thinking I'm finally gonna sell it. I've squeezed every drop of Rom Flashing Goodness from it, and I've got a buddy who just recently asked me if I would sell it. :-(
I bought mine to make all my friends with iPhones jealous and it works
I'd been out of contract and still rocking the S1 for the last year waiting for a phone i really wanted. I went to uni in Seoul (고려대학교) and so i am partial to all things Korean, which leaves Samsung, LG or Pantech... err well... pretty much only Samsung.
I almost got the Galaxy Note but it was just a little too big. So glad i waited for the S3. I cant imagine this phone being obsolete, even by enthusiast standards, anytime too soon.
the gps on this device is nuts. its so fast.

I got a G2 recently and am 93% happy with it.
I was coming form a Nexus 4 and was certain I would get a Nexus 5. At the last minute while looking at the displays in the store and testing how they felt in my hand, I decided to go for the G2.
The missing 7% is the plastic back and the lack of wireless charging. These are both things that are superior on the Nexus 5 that I wish I could have on the G2. Especially wireless charging, the Nexus 4 spoiled me in that regard. It's just so much better for wear and tear on the phone's USB port which had been a problem area for me on my Galaxy S2, plus the tilted charging orb of the Nexus made a handy pseudo-dock. I am still glad I went with the G2 because the screen, battery life, and camera are all better but I do miss the wireless charging and rubberized back of the Nexus 5.

Coming from the Atrix HD I like my G2: big screen, no lag, nice interface. I miss the ability of the Atrix HD file manager to access my PC as remote storage. I know I can do the opposite with wireless storage but when working on the phone it means having to go back and forth to the PC.
to me:
battery - very good
speed - can lag through menus, but ok
camera - i'd say between ok and poor compared with a Note 2 that I owned. photos seems to be fuzzier. + as usual LG photos take too much space (for less better). OIS... this shouldnt be a strength. macro shots are good
memory - if you take many long videos and photos, stock many music and movies in it, this phones not for you. an additional usb storage to move or stock data is required
LG UI... - good, I don't find it too much like some tests say. too bad settings background is white, i would have preferred black. I don't use Slide Aside but it's interesting, sometimes Q-slide and QuickMemo.
Image edition = very poor
Video Editor is really good, too bad you can't use imported photos and videos (some videos may work).
weather app - not really accurate
voice mate - don't use it. just did a few times just for fun
keyboard - don't like. can't have suggestion when clicking on a word that was mispelled (like Samsung keyboard). the second line of letters doesnt fill the entire space. several keyboard themes is interesting though
microphone - good quality
KnockOn is a ++. I find myself dumb when double tapping on other phones to unlock the screen
all of this coming from stock rom with no "make the phone better" apps.

I have wireless charging on my D802...
I just bought a QI tag that fits between the phone and the cover (invisibly) and plugs in to the mini USB. Works like a charm for about £10 :good:
Great phone. For the 3+ months I have had it I haven't had an issue.
-Beautiful screen with minimal bezel
-Great battery 24+hours/5+ hours screen time
-Plenty of dev support
-Big fan of the rear keys + knock on/off
-Fast. Haven't experienced any lag (using Nova Launcher)
Only negative is the slow updates from LG. With a custom skin I don't think updating is as crucial but I want 4.4 so I can use google wallet again

[Q] Thinking of moving from a 5S to the Alpha - your thoughts?

like the title says
mostly iPhone user, but love the alpha design and feel.

The only downside from my own experience is that the reception is a lot worse than other phones. Mine often gets no signal in places where other phones can still get by with a few bars. After all, it is Samsung's first phone with metal frame.

As far as design and functionality. The Alpha and the 5S is very similar. The alpha has a bigger screen (4.7 inches) and battery (1850 mah) but it "feels" the same as a 5S.
Some could care less about the lollipop update because of some lag issues and battery drainage. So if you have an international version kit kat 4.4.4 will be the latest OS for you until Samsung releases the lollipop update. The att version "may" update automatically upon boot but you can always skip the download part and stick with kit kat until you're ready.
If the alpha is your first Android phone there will be a learning curve going from ios to Android. Specially with the Samsung touchwiz skin. Some playing with the phone should remedy that.
Good luck!!

Thanks for that informative response!
I like small phones, can't understand the monsters which people use these days... Held the alpha was amazed by is portability.
Also, ergonomics is really under-rated these days. Surprised the alpha didn't get more traction.
Moving to galaxy alpha is a good decision.
Compact phone + better performance + better camera (better than iP6)
Regarding the battery.. I already countered it just bought spare battery and spare battery charger from online store.
The good thing about having a spare battery and spare battery charger is avoiding charging thru phone which is resulting to being a wall hugger and limited movements of course you can't just move anywhere while having usb cord connected to ac to your phone.
Charging thru spare battery charger is approximately 2 hours but you can use the battery for 12 hours or more, just plug it and forget it well atleast for 2 hours
Or If you have a power bank just put it in your bag.
According to gsmarena.com the galaxy alpha's battery test
click
52hours, so having 2 batteries then just doble the result
Really good looking phone, extremly economic battery saver electronic, better camera than most of the phones, really fast cpu and gpu.

Amazon has them but still expensive (around $400) you can try
Ebay or even swappa.

Thanks for that! I can imagine. Honestly, iOS is faultless. I don't think I have ever seen a piece of software so honed together like iOS.
That being said, I am tired of the small display, not willing to shed 500 on the 6, and so the Alpha came to mind.
Yup. I'd still pick the alpha over the 5s anyday. Youll love the versatility of android and possibly also the amoled screen. The screen size of the alpha is perfect. I came from lg g2 and did not like the 5" at all.
On antutu the alpha scores higher(53k) than the 5s(40k). But real world usage iphone still flawless.
For aesthetics i prefer the alpha as well. I think it looks better than the s6.

How is the wifi?

Hey,
So I'm looking at tablets.
I tried a Galaxy Tab 10.1, and the wireless on it was awful, so I returned it.
Looked at the newest ipad, but it has no back button, which I find ridiculous, so no dice.
Was thinking of buying a Galaxy Tab S3, but I'm kind of worried about the wifi speeds, seeing as it's Samsung too, just like the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Anyone who can tell me a bit more about this? I intend to be watching a lot of twitch on it, and I do not want to have it buffering every 30 seconds - as was the case with the 10.1 sometimes.
I have mine for 3 weeks now, and wifi is perfect from the start, no issues at all.
Your device/network must have been defective. I have absolutely no wifi related issues on my Tab S. Neither have I seen any other related complaints.
So far I have had zero wifi issues with my S3. Zero with my tab A 10.1 with spen either. The only reason I went to the S3 was toget a decent amount of storage built-In. The U.S. version of the Tab A only has 16G B after all.
Sent from my SM-T820 using Tapatalk
I had mine for about 2 months now and I am experiencing drop outs might be once or twice a day, so the question for people who say they have no issues with it, do you guys play any online games on it, this is the most where u will notice. Cause if you surfing the internet or reading something it won't disrupt what you doing. I am connecting on 2.4 ghz and have my Nexus 6p and the nexus 9 before the Tab S3, never dropped the connection once. I am sure its Samsung firmware issue, cause I remember my misses had the same issues with her S4 and once I installed a custom rom this problem disappeared. Hopefully we can have some development for the tab S3 soon.
Wi-Fi on mine is balls out fast. Range is similar to my LG G6, which is also pretty good. No stability issues.

as of mid-March 2018, is the Galaxy Tab S3 worth it?

opinions if you have them, thx!
Note 10.1 2014 died a horrible death, have been looking for a replacement -- and of course, have been following threads in XDA and other sites in the meantime.
aware of various issues:
- wifi drain (though the latest update has some reporting it's been fixed?)
- non-Sammy magnet cases wreaking havoc
- still on Nougat, Oreo delivery date uncertain
- no backwards compatibility with .spd Note files
i can get the Tab S3 for $517 USD; or in bundle from B&H for $565 (no taxes on either order), which includes the keyboard cover.
thing is: the Galaxy Tab S4 will launch sometime this year (speculation is September), it will have Oreo out of the box (one would think), and it also looks to have a 16:10 ratio at 10.1"-- and maybe improved accessories. of course, the Tab S4 will be spensy AF.
thoughts?
I don't have mine yet, but if your carrier is Verizon, you can get the Tab S3 (T827) for $299 w/2yr contract. I snapped it up, since I don't anticipate leaving them in that time period. Should arrive Monday. It's supposed to get Oreo this summer. Many find 4:3 the best ratio for a tablet.
I should add that there doesn't seem to be a root available for the T827 as of yet.
Yes it worth i got yesterday with 24 months contract it rocks!!! Its sexy fast and powerful! You can just sell the s3 for some money and buy the s5 in few years when will be released. In next few years 5G will arrived and probably s5 would support it.
I don't know about the 2nd one, but the other problems don't need to worry about.
The tablet, with newest update, can install S Note from apkmirror, and you can also open SPD file using Samsung Notes.
thanks for the answers so far!
the SPD issue being resolved is pretty huge for me ...
i'm on the fence: argh, do i buy now (B&H just dropped the price by $70 for the tablet itself), or do i wait for the Tab S4, though unannounced but which is rumoured to be due later this year?
I've had mine since Aug 2017 and am completely happy about it. And I have the "composition book" magnetic cover and it has not had any issues with the magnets in it. Definitely get S Notes off apkmirror as Samsung Notes is really watered down.

opinions if you have them, thx!

I have had my Tab S3 tablet since release day. Here are my thoughts:
- wifi drain (though the latest update has some reporting it's been fixed?)
Even after numerous updates wifi battery drain is still there. Hoping Oreo would fix this.
- non-Sammy magnet cases wreaking havoc
I used to use a smart magnetic case bought off amazon. They work for the auto screen on and off. However, the magnets do interfere with the Spen. I suggest to not fold the case all the way to the back of the device when writing on it. Im now using the official keyboard cover. It does not offer side protection and has no screen auto on/off function. But I prefer this over the magnetic case.

Oreo is confirmed in the works and is coming soon. How soon? Im thinking mid to end of 2nd Quarter.

Cant comment on this.
$565 for the tablet and keyboard cover is a good deal. I got my Tablet for $599 and paid extra $150 for the keyboard. Cant comment on the Tab S4 as I have not even heard rumors about it.
S-note can be side loaded on the S3. I have it on mine. Can't remember where I got it but the reference came from somewhere on this board.. Samsung Notes is a cruddy downgrade from S-note . No idea what Samsung was thinking. The off screen writing though goes to Samsung Notes only.
So far I've not seen any problem with my off brand case other than cheaply built retainers cracking. It does provide a good holder for the S-pen.

With the TabS3 being on the "quarterly update" path, that is something to think about.
I have my Wifi Tab S3 since about a month after release. I still like it and use it, but at times it feels laggy, and I need to turn off WiFi when sleeping to save battery. Battery life still isn't as good as my several year old iPad Air 2 Cellular (with T-Mobile SIM and service).
Would I buy one today? I'd have to think hard about it.

I agree with KidJoe, although user experience is very depending on usage. I use the tab s3 mostly for watching Netflix and YouTube and some surfing the internet and therefore don't experience any lag. The screen is better than any other tablet I have seen (never looked at the iPads though). Battery life is fine. Easily one to two days on a charge. That's fine for me, I charge my smartphone every night so no big deal to plug in the tablet as well. Never really noticed the wifi drain (specially on latest update), only because everybody is complaining about it (conformation bias?).
Also never used the pen so can't comment on that. Still waiting for the google assistant coming to my country (the Netherlands). And that's also my only critique on the tab S3: damn Samsung software. I prefer the stock Android experience.
To summarize: because the lack of tab S4 and google pixel tablet with OLED screen, I would definitely buy this tablet again. I paid 485 Euro's on eglobal central. They now sell it for 430 Euro's which is a great deal imo.
my s3 is a hog.
Android tablets get a lot of hate for reasons I don't understand. If Android tablets are your preference (as they are mine) then I don't know of a better "current" tablet than the S3. The Pixel C is still pretty awesome. I marginally prefer the S3 because of the haptic feedback and slightly better screen, but it's not a huge difference. I have no complaints about the S3.

I agree. I'm not into the Apple environment and came off an iPhone 3GS back in the day when I migrated to Android and been Android ever since. My Tab S3 is fantastic and does what I need it to do which is taking notes. I work in IT so it is a lot of diagrams and drawings so being able to quickly draw out an infrastructure diagram and have it posted to my laptop in a PDF or JPEG is just like magic. And when I need to I have the keyboard cover so I can quickly type out notes without needing my laptop. The only thing I lack is being able to VPN into work (because my employer won't support BYOD) but the bluetooth transfer of docs to my work laptop is what resolves that issue for me.
price drop on the Tab S3 across the board right now
B&H
Bestbuy
Amazon
all selling the tablet for $449.99
I just bought one of these from Verizon, on a 2-yr plan, for $299 . . . new Samsung Keyboard cover was $67 through Amazon . . . I'm thinking that this is a pretty good deal . . . maybe available at these prices because the Tab S4 is coming soon?

or maybe to fire a shot over the bow as Apple announces their new iPad?
if this is part of the strategy, i can see Samsung dropping the Tab S4 bomb in Q2 ...
