Low light is pretty week. Camera app is slow to capture and subjects need to be dead still to produce a usable picture
well overall device is great only weak spot is camera in low light outside in daylight camera performs great but in absence of light there is tons of noise it's like a 3 mp camera image don't know whether a software update can fix that and when mi will provide that or just camera sensor is not capable. i think xiaomi should have asked google to modify camera app also

Low light performance is just Terrible, no escuses for that.
Low light camera performance is nowhere. Not even low light even in indoor location camera sucks.
Low light photography with the inbuilt Mi-ported camera app is terrible. Pictures clicked had a high amount of noise in manual mode and focusing too was bad. In the HDR mode and with flash, pictures had unrealistic tinge and destroyed the quality. The Portrait Mode works comparatively better however the light entering the photo lens somewhat decreased.
Overall, the app itself needs improvements. The hardware is more or lese fine.
Hardware camera is good for its price. I compared side to side with my old Samsung A710 (f/1.9 vs f/2.2), and the stock camera APP beats the samsung hands down. In low light, Xiaomi pics are darker but with more details. Samsung night mode makes brighter images, but more blurry and with more noise.
Then, if you root (systemless with magisk works great) and use the ported Google Camera then it's a completely different world... Pics become even brighter and more detailed. Different versions could give smoother images or more detailed but noisier ones, up to your choice.
We can't compare vs an Iphone or S8 camera ofc... but in its mid-tier range camera is great for everyday usage.
PS. Using Oreo build, never tried Nougat stock cam.
The Mi camera app considered good enough, though I admit the low light photos are terrible. What's more worst is that the HDR image is really bad compared to non-HDR in quality.
sideport with GCam HDR+ whichever version that suit you.. then have fun with it, if you're not satisfied with the result then it is time to use a DSLR with a 50mm 1.4 or the L series 1.2 for those low light moments.. :angel:
For me, the build is just okay, I'm like holding my OnePlus 3T.

to me its not that bad , use google camera , lowlight photo seems better than stock camera
But the front camera is really bad whether it's gcam or stock. Most of the time it produces blurry images.

from my perspective and experience, the front camera with only a 5 MP resolution, using the GCam resulted in a much much better sharp and crisp image.. especially the portrait mode.. (compared to the stock camera app)
it goes back to HOW we take our photographs, steady hands and a moment (around 2-3 seconds while it process the picture) and I never took only one shot, I took many shots then pick which is the best, delete others..

During low light i can't have a good group selfie neither from stock nor from gcam. Most of the time it's blurry.

have you tried using the GCam with flash?
if you have, then there's nothing at the moment an option that I could recommend using :angel:
while using the GCam, let the auto focus (the circle thing) do it's work untill it dissapear.. then press the shutter :fingers-crossed:
I really don't understand. The camera module itself is pretty capable, but the software is putting it back. God I hope G Cam supports dual lens.

A camera is a very important factor for me when buying a phone,
I bought my Redmi Note 3 after reading some underwhelming reviews about the camera, thinking "oh well, how bad can the rear camera be?" - well, the camera is really under performing, very soft images, noticeable noise in almost every scenario, very disappointing.
My question is that,
Is it really a hardware issue, or just poor camera algorithms coding?
if the former, I will just look for another phone and sell mine,
otherwise, I will (try to) wait patiently until the appropriate software update will come

Camera is nothing but decent , specially at natural light conditions.it seems great at night condition without flash due to low aperture.miui 8 greatly improved my camera experience.i found alomost zero noise in night shots. Enough for a $200 phone
I think it takes good pictures but I found that any kind of motion will blur the picture (even just walking and snapping a pic), so motion sucks, try taking a picture of a moving dog it will just be a blur, low light also sucks, but if you take still pictures under good lighting pictures look great, I think there is a soft spot for this camera it's just hard to find, also lowering the resolution to 12MP will take 16:9 widescreen photos rather then 4:3 photos in 16MP mode
Part of the problem is it never wants to increase the shutter speed properly in order to keep iso low. It tends to take most pictures at 1/25th or so, which is great for static but not for moving objects where you need a faster shutter speed to freeze motion.

low light shots are average.
daytime shots are great.
did you tweak the default settings?
which ROM are you on?....try to be on latest MM dev or china rom
also try using open camera.
at this price range, show me a phone which gives better images?
I tried all the tweaks available including using Open Camera, nothing really helped.
I ended up selling it and buying an Mi4C - the difference in photo quality is unbelievable (at a price of around 90$ new)
Had 7 different smart phones this year, and Redmi Note's camera was the weakest among them, for me it's very noticeable.

The low light capability looks quite good. Makes me glad I ordered the Mate 9 although it makes the wait for delivery harder. Please add some more color ones. Is it possible to take both 12 MP and 20 MP colour shots (I guess the 12 MP colour pictures would be post processed using the 20 MP B&W camera to make a 20 MP colour one). Btw, good eye too!

yeah, low light on stationary objects are very good. camera lowers iso and goes to a very slow shutter. Great detail but will blur easily on anything moving
I used manual -2 step exposure for stars shot. There is a bit of sharpening added in second version of each photo. Bit of S7 Edge style, but not so much oversharpened. In parking shot I have used shutter speed 1/4 sec. so you have to have steady hand and there's basically 50% chance that your photo may be blured due to hand shake and fast object moving to side from you will get blured as well. But for static scene Mate 9 does admirable job, if you can keep your hands steady. Both quick shots I've took today were taken handheld. Color reproduction is excellent for both shots, true to life.

That's the case for every camera in low light situation. Either the ISO value will be high with lot of noise, or low ISO with slow shutter speed which is not good if anything is moving in scene.
I think Mate 9 has excellent picture quality both in daylight and low light. Especially dynamic range is outstanding and much better than in my other device iP7Plus.

I Mostly agree, with little addition. Almost every MOBILE camera, except Google Pixel which uses approx 2x faster shutter speed compared to other mobile cameras because of HDR+ and thanks to this it reduces a lot of high ISO noise, kind of. It have to, because it lacks OIS. But pixel is a lot more expensive than Mate 9, even base 5.2 inch model and for me personally it looks ugly, those thick bezels, display ratio, relatively small battery, for that kind of money. Then, on avarage DSLR camera with APS-C sensor and F/1.8 50mm lens one can use about 4-6 times faster shutter speed than Mate 9. So basically where you're shooting 1/17 with Mate 9 you can shot 1/100 with mirrorless DSLR and still get bit better quality pictures out of it with more details preserved and better dynamic range.

Of course. I am only talking about mobile phone cameras and not even thinking about DSLRs in the same sentence
It is obvious that mobile phone cameras with much smaller sensors cannot compete with DSLR in low light scenario. In good day light both can produce well balanced shots with good dynamic range, but still the edge is on DSLR side
This may be obvious, but a tripod makes a massive difference for low light on this phone.

Yes but from real life scenario, how many times one carries tripod in his/her pocket? If you're already carrying tripod there's not big deal to carry mirrorless DSLR, Sony has nice low profile lens for example.
I personally have this tripod from Polaroid https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/789591-REG/Polaroid_PLTRI42_42_TRAVEL_TRIPOD.html which is extremely portable and can fit into jacket inner pocket. But it isn't exactly comfortable to wear it all the time with your phone during night.
Some fireworks, using light graffiti, light painting mode. I've found out to be best for fireworks. Handheld.
Camera Bug
Today I had a very annoying bug. Given that it snowed I wanted to do a series of photographs. I tried several ways: Monochrome Photo HDR and Night Photo. Bug occurred when I tried to take pictures in '' Night Photo '' and manifests this: I press the button for shooting, display show the message "processing '' and stuck so for several dozen seconds after the image made black. I closed camera app, I opened it again black picture still. I had to close camera app, delete from ram, wait few seconds and work again. I repeted 3 times same results. In daylight conditions pictures turns out good with good focus , saturation levels etc. But color reproduction needs work and in low light conditions noise is quite apparent. Portrait is like 7/10. Selfies turn out good after the recent update, 8.5/10.
P.S. For stabilized videos I use nokia camera app and its upto the mark .
Low-light picture quality is abominable. Zoom tears images, there is a lot of noise. Images in daylight are pretty decent. For this price range, the camera quality is justifiable (I suppose). I have a Moto G4 Plus and it takes amazing photos compared to this device. If you remove the portrait mode, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 has nothing over the Moto G4 Plus camera.
Hope to see changes in future updates.
Yes, pretty disappointed with the camera performance. I should have got the RN5 instead but since I already got this, I'll stick with it as taking pictures is not the main thing for me on this phone. Still, the quality is far off from the various paid reviews.

Moreover with Gcam you also get additional features like panorama , ar stickers and google lense.

It's quite bad with the built-in camera app , but it's quite acceptable with some manual camera apps and especially in HDR mode
I am yet to purchase the phone. I have seen lot of camera comparison with Redmi note 5 pro on YouTube but still confused. I am planning to use Lineage os if I buy the device.

Don't know but it is definitely better than the original Asus camera app
Earlier the photos taken from Asus were not that great as that of redmi note 5pro, but now with Google cam installed these are now coming extra ordinary, thanks for the team made possible without rooting the phone.

I installed Google camera after enabling api through fastboot but not much big effect is seen from Snapdragon camera
For example I did portrait mode on Google camera but it takes much time than Snapdragon camera and also showing images of low resolution and small megapixel (my camera support 16 MP but it showed images from 8 MP and allow motion is not working and hdr+enhanced is allowed but not working, the camera got stuck every time it is turned on
Okay at well lit conditions, not good at low light
During daylight, the rear camera photos are good.
But the phone doesn't focus properly on close objects.
The low light camera is bad. A lot of noise, less light detection, slow focus,etc.
The video quality (1080p) during day is good. But the device takes time to focus during a video recording.

Selfie quality is quite decent, but the color tone needs immediate attention, as it is not accurate/natural even under good light (skin has a red tinge). And overall, brightness, noise level etc., could be tweaked a bit more to satisfy the consumer needs (as Redmi does).
Edit: I take my above words back. The front cam is quite bad. The colors are so inaccurate, and sometimes, different parts of the photo have different saturation/color levels. And the noise/details even under incandescent lighting is poor! Using a different app only makes it worse.

If u use Google camera on this device u will get an amazing shots even in low light , and portrait mode on both cameras is superb , double sharpness and detail than stock one. But u have to root it for these result on this device.

Try modded gcams
Well the new OTA update did made few changes to focus & color production in front cam . Well I think in future updates the camera2 api would be enabled but not sure yet .
i hav a solution ...and it worked well for me....... the changes to make in stock camera app
1.turn off beatification
2. turn off face detection
3. set the white balance level to daylight (in default its in auto)
4.set iso level to 400 (in default its in auto)
5. adjust exposure to max +1 this is supposed to be increased only when required...
set the settings like this and see the differnce guys
also if possible after taking photos when u view them there is an edit option below click it and select auto.....it does great
Shutter speed is restricted to .3 seconds in 4Gb Variant Camera Developer Option _> manual exposure ->user settings.. Very bad.

I took a look at the settings everything is set to its max quality setting. Hdr did nothing to improve results, same bad quality with auto, on or off. I can say, without doubt, it has something to do with your phone specifically.
Have the stock Oreo update here, both front and back cameras work fantastically. Nothing like you describe.
First, I'd try a factory reset, make sure the lenses are clean, and re-check them.
You didn't mention if you were referring to the back or front camera.
Selfies with the LG app are still awful, as they were with Nougat, although in Oreo there is a slider to adjust the level of image processing, But even at the minimal level when you zoom in it looks like a brush drawing.
The above problem can be completely overcome using the ported GCam app, discussed extensively in other threads.
In contrast, the native camera app does an excellent job with the main cameras in most scenarios, especially with the new "bright mode" in very low light situations.
Again, in certain situations the Gcam does a slightly better job. The main issue with GCam is that it uses "bursts" of photos and then HDR processing to make these great sharp photos. This works great in static situations but if the subject is moving (like with children) there will inevitably be blur of the subject. In these situations the LG app does a better job.
Since you are reporting a problem specific to your device there is probably no "fix" other than try resetting it, use Gcam, or there is physical damage to your camera.

Haven't run into that problem with the Gcam I'm using. Though I use normal HDR+ and not HDR+ enhanced.
Yeah sorry for not fully describing the issue. I have some pre update photos from the back main sensor as well as the wide angle one that look fantastic , after I updated to oreo , everything turned blurry and washed out. Will try to factory reset the phone and take some sample shots to check if there is any difference . Thank you all for the replies.
Let down by the same issue.post oreo update the photographs from back camera are overexposed and washed out and the colour accuracy and clarity has taken a kick in the gut.
