Let me start off by saying I come from the world of iPhone. Connect phone to computer, click "Jailbreak" button, wait, phone jailbroken. Number of different "types" of jailbreaks, 1.
I have been looking around, and reading quite a bit. I entered the world of Android with a G4, and eventually learned there are many different version of the G4, and I had one that apparently didn't support rooting. So eventually I just gave up on it. I have recently acquired a Nexus 6P, upgraded it to Oreo, and think i am ready to take the root plunge.
So I read a bit. Got very lost. Read a bit more, and got lost again. From my take there are different "kinds" of roots to achieve different goals? Or am I misunderstanding?
So lets start with what I want to do. I want to run some of the more "advanced" apps that require root privileges to do things. I don't know if that is enough information or not, and if its not, just tell me what you need to know, and I will explain it more if I can. Ideally I want a "one click" option. I have tried Kingroot to no avail, and don't even know if a one click option is available for this device on this OS version, but thought I would ask. And the most important think I need to know, is rooting going to delete everything? I spent a lot of time setting up my phone, and don't really (at this point) want to do it again if I can avoid it.
Please again note, I have done a lot of reading, and research before coming here to ask for help. I am just totally lost. I have come from a totally different (iPhone) world where things are obviously quite a bit different, and just want to be sure I have all the information I need before starting this process so I don't brick the phone.
What do you mean with "more advanced apps"? Did you visit the nexus 6p device forum here on xda developers? Did you ask there for specific help to root?

I didn't know there was a specific forum for the Nexus 6P, I have found it now, and will go and ask my question there.
And by more advanced apps, I am talking about apps that require root.
Scratch that, apparently I can't ask for help where I am suppose to ask for help because I require a higher post count. And because honestly I have nothing meaningful to contribute, as I am not familiar enough with android, I can't get my post count up. So I am kinda stuck.

OK so I;m a total noob to this awesomeness, but my problem is no matter how many apps Ive downloaded to help me flash a ROM to my Galaxy s4 SCH-I545 I simply do not see the advanced options in recovery mode. Am I doing something horribly wrong or is it a simple fix that I will probably feel totally embarrassed about. Also the little green android dude always shows error above it.Please Help

You really need to educate yourself. Just jumping in like it appears you are will only cause a lot of problems. No one is going to take you step by step through the entire process. Read, read, read. Research as much as you can. Then research some more. It's the best thing you can do.

Do you even know what your build number is? Are you rooted? If so, what method did you use to root? What recovery are you trying to use?

If you actually did research you would know that you can't install a custom recovery to a MK2 build. Your ONLY option is Safestrap. (Search).
Good luck.

"They" said Vroot was safe to use.
Did "They" also tell you to then try to flash a custom recovery like TWRP? Then "They" lied.
You're on MK2. As I've told five or six people today, you can't have a custom recovery on any I454 other than those on the MDK build.
First, there's several different phones called the Galaxy S4. The hardware and software aren't the same between vendors. The Verizon model is VERY locked down and won't permit you to flash custom ROMs. For you, on MK2, Safestrap is the only way to custom flash.
Read the threads here on Safestrap and the thread in the development forum to help you understand what you can do.
They're long threads, but read them. If you can't spend the time to read, don't flash, as you'll just brick your phone.

Thank you for understanding. I am sorry I am a noob and as expected I didn't know what exactly to research up. I didn't know as a NOOB that I said I was that the build number was my problem. There for I researched what I did know and you can see when i became a member and when I decided to post this and every day in between I was trying different methods on how to get a custom ROM on my phone. Luckily for me you were very resourceful and I learned a great deal from you and appreciate it a lot. I know what you are doing is really aggravating and i praise you for your knowledge. I just hope next that next time we are in contact and I knowingly ask a noobish question you will be a little more understanding with me. The only reason that I posted on here was because I felt that I had tried every possible way and was doing something wrong and it happens to be that I just couldn't do it the ways I was researching up. Thanks a lot for all your help boss man I hope soon enough I can pick your brain for all the knowledge you have when I come across another problem with rooting a different device or just some questions about a certain Rom.
Ok so I just want to say thank you all for your help and the advice you gave me it was totally awesome. I got it to work and now im running Hyperdrive on my galaxy s4. thank you so much.

there is nothing mean about commenting on researching and fully understanding before proceeding. We have dozens of posts every day in this forum by "noobs" who don't take 5 minutes to read anything. And then expect massive help when they screw their phones up....
There are all sorts of youtube videos on just about every aspect of GS4. We have countless threads on what you can and can't do to the GS4 and yet every single day we have new posters asking why they can't load any rom they want or whats taking so much time to get a bootloader unlocked,,,,we have dedicated Devs who basically donate their time to all of us. The least we can do is educate ourselves in what we can and can't do....

And you are very right with your statement I completely agree with you. But as a noob to this I tried to educated myself as much as possible The only thing I hate more is not being able to figure something out on my own. But I had no clue what was my problem to the fact that I couldn't flash a rom with all the possibilities and programs at my disposal. It was just not knowing what to search not the fact that all noobers are lazy

Sorry if you think I'm being a jerk, but I wasn't exaggerating. Five to ten people come here just about every day wondering why their phone bricked due to trying to install custom recovery when spending just an hour of two reading this forum would have made it clear that they can't do that.
Trust me, I wasn't being mean, simply blunt. I'm astonished by anyone that thinks that flashing random stuff onto a $600 phone without spending an hour or two to understand what they're doing is a good idea.
I'm not saying you don't have the right to be mean because you do but before you are just figure out if they are Are the stupid noobs or the ones that actually took the time to try to search but couldn't come up with anything. Just remember not every is a complete idiot of a noon.
The thing is that we all were noobs once, but we didn't ask anyone to hold our hands. Unfortunately I can't say I believe you tried as hard as you say you did OP. I mean if your new to rooting, the first thing you should do is search google or youtube for a guide. That's a pretty basic realization all of us had when we learned about this hobby. If you had read or watched any of those guides, you would know everything in rooting depends on a device's bootloader status and how to learn the status of your own bootloader. Then you would've known where to begin in searching in XDA. XDA clearly states it is a site for development & developers, so question's that are covered in any of the thousands of beginner guides get met with harsh responses.

We all have our beliefs and no one can argue but all I'm saying is that the only thing that stopped me was that I didn't know that the me7/mk2 build could not be flashed like I tries through Odin or goo manager or any of the other 10 ways I tried. But once I found out about safestrap it was all good money. And I thank everyone on here for the advice.

joshm, we all get a bit perturb with new posters becasue we know if some rudimentary research was done on their part before they leaped into rooting and romming and all that, 90% of the problems would cease. I have taken dozens of PMs from people who were lost and I kept sending them to links that I was able to find in minutes of searching either the XDA forums or elsewhere. We do have the right to get a bit frustrated when we see post after post of why can't I do this or why can't I do that.

I've certainly done some stupid things and asked some obvious questions when I 1st hopped on xda. But I'd like to think I've settled in ok. Seems to me though this is just how it's going to be huh? You two know far more than I do and even I'm hopping on the q&a side and trying to help people like you do.
It would be nice to have stickys regarding all the really easy things like. ... No custom recovery for any Verizon S4 unless you're on MDK. Sadly I know many people won't read that either. Not 100% on exactly what it takes to create a sticky, obviously a mod has to, but that would be a start.
And I know the search function works awesome these days too! I think people get excited and are in a hurry to get flashing away and ask silly questions later when their S4 is stuck at the Verizon splash screen or bootlooping.

Hello, I was just wondering the best way to root the AT&T Samsung Note SGH-I717. I have looked up many ways but every time I scroll down to the comments I read everyone is having problems. I would just like the best and most proven way to root the phone. I use the phone with straight talk, it is an unlocked att phone, will rooting the phone affect anything with Straight Talk? I am new to rooting so please be detailed and give me links to get everything I need. Thank You so much.

so here is the deal, here are 2 methods with very subtle differences. you didn't say what your phone was running now, so here are my suggestions.......
READ, READ, READ
I know you are new here, and I was once too. I went through all of this and was very nervous about the process. (no real reason to be)
I spent a good 2 weeks reading so I would feel confident about what I was doing. I would read through these and figure which is better for you or which you feel more confident in using. they would both work fine depending on your situation or what you phone is running. because these threads are older, you may run into an issue as to where the download files are not active anymore. that is where a recent Google search could come into play. you say you have read the comments for different methods have had negative results. problem is you don't know whether that person followed the directions correctly or whether they were just in a hurry and missed something.
that's why I posted both these threads. compare to what you have read. I have a habit of going to the back of the threads and read forward. this tells me what the most recent problems may have been and if there is a solution. though the files may or may not be active, you can always get the file. its the PROCESS which is correct. compare them.
as I said........... READ, READ, READ
it puts you in the situation to help yourself first
take your time, do as the process suggests. I even rehearsed it several times. due to my lack of experience, I wanted to be as prepared as possible in case something went wrong.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504218
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1518962
both of these threads are from very reputable members of the community. as all threads will suggest......they are NOT responsible for what you do. make sure you are ready. watch Youtube tutorals, compare processes, have your files loaded and where you have easy access, read and rehearse.
take your time
whatever you need to do to feel confident. if something goes wrong....KNOW what you are going to do next. if you don't know where you went wrong in process or deviated from it, then others cant help.
good luck and I hope I have helped
edit.......
just saw this...this is at the back of Da G 's thread. suggested by AGOATTAMER. he is the man when it comes to having old links to process. this IS the one I used, that I couldn't find.

Hi all, I just received this gently-used SGH-I527 as a gift. This phone replaces an old Galaxy Nexus phone that has run its course for me. For Android phones, I've had nothing but the Nexus experience (and in the last eight months of the Galaxy Nexus, Cyanogenmod 11). I'm a little disappointing to read that this phone's bootloader hasn't been cracked yet (or as some suspect, never will be). However, I did discover the phone was rootable using Kingo ROOT, so I proceeded to do that because the phone still has Jelly Bean 4.2.2 on it.
I don't really care about Kit-Kat. But I certainly wouldn't mind unbloating it as others have done now that it's rooted. The TouchWiz UI is pretty corny compared to what I'm used to, but I guess I can get used to it.
Since I'm unfamiliar with TouchWiz, can someone give me a clue of some good candidate apps to delete and HOW? The phone's already rooted. I just need to know what and how to delete worthless crap. They all show up in the Application Manager under "All", but when I tap on one there's no option to delete it.
Also, I'm getting a notification that says, "AT&T Software update", Version V42_1_1307_1_2. I'm scared to proceed with this update because I do NOT want to spoil the phone with any upgrade that would risk my losing root access and control. Plus I've read Kit-Kat is laggy on this phone compared to Jelly Bean, so I'd rather have speed and performance over "new features" of Kit-Kat.
If there's already a guide for any of this, I apologize for not having discovered it yet. Thanks all!

Whoa whoa......slow down.
Dont go removing so fast. Many have deleted many vital OS files that way, brick in device.
Consider Titanium Back-up. TiBu will allow you to freeze the bloat first. You will then see if freezing will affect your operating system before removing. Others had deleted and the found out too late.

Easy man, it's not a crime to quote someone here. I am not targeting you, nor am I even aware that I quoted you before.
If you are helping someone out, that's great. But you offered no explanation as to what you were linking or how it would help. You did not offer any explanation of your experience with the app. No, you probably aren't required to, but do you know this other persons experience level?
I read all these Q&A questions as if the person on the other end is a newbie.
Do you want someone to just blindly do what you say and then brick their device? Or render it useless?
Of course you dont. Again a simple explanation of maybe your experience with the app would have done that.
I am not targeting you, I have got better things to do. I just know that not everybody is the same knowledge level here and people ( at least I do ) want to feel confident in what they are doing .
I know I don't want to be responsible for some bodies brick.
I only quoted you because that's what I wanted the OP to pay attention to.

well i understand your point and i apologize if I misunderstood you. the app i recommend is very simple to understand and use. it tell you what you can delete and what you can't delete it also automatically make a backup of anything you delete in case you delete something needed for the system and have the ability to restore whatever you delete or remove from the system.
This is my fist post, I am sorry if I am asking something I should not. I am not a technological guy, so I need some help and patience.
My wife has an old gt-i9082, it is at android 4.2.2. I think it is 3 years old.
I would like to upgrade it to a better version because the cellphone system are already very slow and some app are not working anymore.
A friend told me it is possible, since the cellphone are not at warranty anymore, but I do not know how to do it. I just find this forum with google.
So, I am asking for a step by step guide to do it, if it is possible. If it already exist, please point me to the relevant thread.
Again, sorry for my lack of understand.
Thank you very much for your time.

They don't have any newer official Samsung updates, but the developers here have been able to keep your device updated with custom versions of android that are based off of the Android Open Source Project and/or CyanogenMod sources. This means that if you update, you will get a vastly different user experience. You will have access to the Play Store and all the apps and what not, but the UI is completely different from the Settings, to the Dialer, Contacts app, email app, etc etc. Many people prefer this, but if you aren't tech savvy and new things confuse and/or frustrate you, then it can be an adventure. There might be small issues or work arounds that you might need to do depending on which custom option you choose and how you prefer or need to use your phone as well. I don't recommend jumping into the upgrade without reading other forum members advice or comments to see if there are issues that might affect the use of your phone. You can find more information in the forum for your phone here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-grand-duos -If you use the dual sim function, pay special attention to the changes in that set up with the newer versions.
I am going to ask for direction over there.
Thank you so much.
This phone is fairly new, i want to root it but i dont know any method that work yet. Is there any developers willing to make a custom recovery for this? Like twrp?

Technically, this is the web?.
I don't understand why some people seem to get upset when others make topics asking questions. It's not usually general knowledge for most people.
I can't tell you what a bootloader is but I sure as hell can spend all day complaining about them, lol. Literally everyone I know personally has never heard the term.
I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but what's wrong with people making topics before exhausting every other possibility to find the answer. Nothing wrong with conversation and who knows what random and unexpected things you could learn.
Hey, sorry I'm getting the breaks done on my car at the moment. I'm writing this instead of reading old magazines, lol
Chances are, we won't see this phone rooted anytime soon. especially now that the Stylo 6 has arrived. Locked Bootloaders are not your friend if you root phones. Mostly DEVs now only concentrate on the Flagship phones...
...Follow the $$$$ trail...
I sure miss the good old days...LoL 2013-2017 were my favorite years

I never was upset.
My POV:
It's neither the task of anyone here to re-publish (excerpts of ) articles simply created by "copy & paste", nor to do a related Google search and then list the links found, nor to tell the questioner that he/she is completely wrong that he/she is totally confusing things - the latter may be considered as being rude.
N.B.
Wondering why you didn't assist OP, instead of posting that garbage?

Posting "Garbage" ? Nah....that's good stuff right there. As for helping OP, your right. I was off topic, but really it's no big deal. Xda is not flooded with pointless threads. I know they prevent pointless posts and topics.....but a few never hurt as long as it's Android related.
OP, it's a shame but don't get your hopes up for ever rooting the Stylo 5 (Damn Bootloaders!). There is still adb though. I bet it's not long before that is gone to. You can get rid of bloatware and do some other cool stuff with it. If you need help with getting it running on a PC you can simply search it on Xda, or even pm me.
But for the love of God and all that is Holy!.......Do not make a thread asking about it!?.
I don't even bother using Google when it comes to Android. The good people on Xda are the only ones I know will be helpful and honest.....That and most likely Google would just get me here anyways, lol.
Again, sorry. I don't mean to be a jerk if I sounded like one at anytime in this novel. I didn't intend to write so much when I started, lol it seems to happen a lot though. There ya go some more good stuff.

Hi,
Sadly after several hours' search, GInMF. Yes, I found several "Root your LG Stylo 5" with 25 different methods posts, NONE of which seem to work. I think most of them are thinly disguised ways to get gullible people to part with their money. The problem that I mostly encountered is, somewhere along the line, they just say "install TWRP recovery"...ignoring the fact that this phone model DOES NOT have one on the TWRP device page. So, the specific question, again, becomes: is there any way to root this phone, even if I'm happy with the stock image?. If any of the XDA experts on this thread know of one, PLEASE point me to it. If there isn't one, pls state that so I can put this effort to rest, either way. Thank you!

I remember when the original Atrix dropped first phone with a dual cpre processor. I was a kid in a candy shot holy he'll. The yesrs devs spent on that phone even after th3 other flags came out was astonishing. Miss the clunky ****er.
not only that, but I have tried some of the other websites ... Bricks now I only use XDA for my questions like this... Currently I am shopping for a new phone, I have the Stylo 3 still but it's on its last leg.
It's been a good time but damn it I Was hoping to get a Stylo 7

Technically there is a TWRP image for LG Stylo 5, however it should be noted that it is an unofficial TWRP image and should be done with the utmost delicacy. As to the whole rooting your phone thing, of course you can. Let me be a little more specific on that though. You cannot root an android if it's newer than 6 months (sadly for all you "tech nerds/junkies" you are all wrong when it comes to whether or not you can root certain phones). I know this for a fact. However I can tell you one thing for absolute sureness. I wouldn't waste the time or money trying to root an LG Stylo 5 when you can get cheaper phones (that run Android 11 and higher) at Walmart. And just so everyone knows, there's no need to root a phone with Android 11 and higher because of the fact that you can use LADB to uninstall system applications and bloat ware. But let me warn you as I've come across this myself and done it as well, but there are certain brands like Alcatel that won't allow you to uninstall the bloat ware, but you can still disable it using ADB commands. Lastly, if you get a phone with Android 11 and higher, DO NOT UNINSTALL anything with com.android, com.sec.android, or anything along those lines because it WILL cause the phone to go into a permanent boot loop at which you'll have to factory reset the phone using the recovery mode.
