Need help with my LG Nexus 5x (Update issue) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. So i downloaded and installed Android 8.0.0 3 hours ago and everything worked fine. Then a 41.5 mb security update came and i downloaded it safely too. But i tried to install it and if keeps showing a black screen with android moving ring logo with "Installing Security Update" beneath it for last 2 hours. Is it normal? Or am i ****ed?

If it stays on that screen, hold power and volume down for a while, and your phone will reboot. Hopefully your phone will boot to normal.

Thank you! I had the same after Oreo security update. The ring was pulsating for ~40 minutes while the progress bar below it was fully completed, then a bit of googling and found this. Held down power and volume down, it restarted the update process and this time it took less than a minute. After that it reboots to Android and finishes the update.

I'd say it's stable, but at least on 5X it's a little slower. Could be a number of reasons so YMMV. However the new notification system is not very nice. There's a lot of redundant notifications from core Android system, and to get around this there's an app called AutoNotification which can hide unnecessary notifications. It worked for a while with the initial Oreo release, but now it seems this latest security patch did something that broke the functionality of AutoNotification. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Stop warning me, i'm a grown man

Why does Samsung feel is necessary to warn me that my headphones are getting louder and could possibly damage my hearing?
Now even the brightness level has to warn me that I am making the screen bright
I am a grown Azz man with two children a mortgage and a job. I'm pretty sure I can handle the responsibility of not blowing my eardrums out, or burning my retina with my Note 8.
What's even worse is now the threshold warning is even lower for the headphone volume. It used to be about 80% now its about 60%.
The one thing I miss it out custom roms is that we used to be able to disable that. Is there any mods available to stop those warnings? Probably the most frustrating thing about modern Samsung devices in my opinion
/Rant
Turning it off is already built in...Settings>Sounds and Vibration>Volume>3 dots menu in upper right hand corner> Media Volume Limiter> Turn it off.

You'll see that won't stop the notification message after reboot. That's a parental control to lock it to a set max where children cannot go past without a PIN code.
There is another way using tasker and autotools.
True. Hopefully Samsung fixes it in a future update... ? This way works for now though unless I go the tasker route later on. I don't reboot my phone often this soon into the phones life anyway, and it's not a huge pain to go into the settings and change it until my next reboot.

Once you click OK, you'll be fine until next reboot without dealing with that step.
In this very subforum is a tasker trick that seems to fix it for most folks.

I'm glad you got this to work for you. I've updated the OP to say that you must hit the "play" button to test this before it will work. I tested this by turning it off, rebooting, then allowing the popup to come back. Then I tried simply re-enabling this event and rebooting. The popup came back. It did not start working again until I hit play to test it. Then it survived every reboot again.
To the OP I'd say visit my thread here to get it to turn off forever.

I don't see how a launcher has anything to do with it. Using Nova.

If you're in the EU, that volume limiter thing is a regulation, so you can't disable it normally.

I'm in South Africa, so probably same rule apply
/sad panda
The EU or International version only warns about high headphone volume the once after reboot. This is the case with my N950N. Once you click OK It never comes up again until you reboot. From what I can gather this is what the option in the 3 dots does on the Snapdragon version. Stops it coming up every single time. The International version does not have the 3 dot menu because that option to stop the warning coming up every single time is already enabled by default.
i dont have that option as well
In most case it's not because they care so much about our well being. They place these sort of obstacles there for legal purposes. Pressing "ok" is basically signing a release of liability for any hearing damages caused by our increasing of the volume. I wouldn't bet on them fixing this any time soon.
Go into developer settings and turn off absolute volume?
Wow.. how sad.. never knew this.. THANKS!
youre clearly not if you made this thread..

Mate 10 Pro extreme lack of response

Hello guys I need help.
My phone has been blazing fast and battery among others have been top notch.
But for the last few days, when I try to use it after the screen times out not too long, there is lag before it comes up whether FP scanner, face recognition or power button is clicked.
But when it stays for a while or overnight, it can take over 5 minutes or more for the screen to come up. When it does this, the fastest solution is to force-restart it by holding power button for long.
The phone actually works fine even when screen doesn't come up; music plays etc.
I haven't added new apps. The only new thing is the navigation app by xda which I've had for a while but I paid premium.
I tried uninstalling the app but no difference.
Hi!
Follow the below steps.
Phone manager>Do optimise>tap on battery icon>Optimise battery usage. And dont let any apps to run in background. It will enhance your device performance.
Hopefully it would help.

Thanks for your response but that wouldn't work as I've already worked on battery management for the apps to no avail.
Update
Fixed guys!
So after the upgrade to EMUI9, it was still a bit slow though not as bad as on Oreo.
So, I went ahead and uninstalled the navigation app by xda together with the premium validation. Then I restarted but it was just a bit faster.
I then went into navigation settings and changed to gestures. I restarted and boom! It's back, faster than before and amazing.

Weird, I had had dark mode enabled in developer options before I updated from the latest stable. It had had no effect ofc with the previous stable release. After updater had restarted the phone dark mode appeared for a minute but then gone away. Even from the developer options so I can not re-enable it. ? WTF Xiaomi

Same for me, so dark mode is hidden somewhere
Hide notch is back! Also I never got dark mode and I can't find it anywhere on the settings
If you want one really good black theme, just search for True Black Two changes are great, 4k and 1080p in 60fps and notch tinkering
Actually it's really annoying that they pushed status bar a little higher. Can I somehow bring it down again?

Nice update and getting closer to perfect for me, however. Auto-brightness is still hopeless, doesn't remember adjustments you make based on various light conditions and very slow to respond (still using Velis). Always on display had improved, now showing date and battery level, it also reacts to lightning conditions, annoyingly though still turns off at night making it not 'anyways on' (I don't have a schedule in place). It also only shows some notification icons, not Outlook for example. Hide notch seems buggy for me. Now it removes the notch with the clock and battery icons etc moving down with the corners of the screen.
update gone !!!
a few hours ago i saw the new update notification but i had no wireless connection, but now i can't find the update any more !!

The update has been successfully completed by the manual method.
1 - Download update file to the device memory.
2 - Open Updater app and click on the Photo in the center (number 10 in color) 10 times .
3 - Press the three properties above and choose
" Choose update package " and then choose Update file and follow the update steps by steps ...
Sorry for my baad English ..

Another update. Bluetooth Absolute Volume remains broken, also the feature resume media playback on apps when a Bluetooth device connects seems now to be buggy.
This update appeared several hours ago but when I pressed the notification, it's says no update available ? glad to see that notch hiding availability is back though.

Yes it is back, but is a mess also, very buggy.
Also, we can choose to hide/show in individual apps, but it works only on one of my apps so far...
Other bugs:
1. Brightness is not working as it should. I set it to 50% manually and it goes back to full after a while
2. The screen turns on by itself just like that, and there is nothing on it to show, no notifications...
3. Battery is very unstable, looses 10% in standby within half an hour, then it is OK for some time, but this should be given some time after every update.
4. When I type password on the lock screen it doesn't show any sign that you are pressing numbers, so I miss it sometimes. Before it showed a shadow when number is pressed.
5. I use option to show how much mobile data is spent in the notification shade, now it is not centered as it was before.
6. In the camera UI it shows a big white dot in the upper left corner, which does nothing.
Uh, enough for this time...
Yes brightness not working like 10.2.3 that was pretty good. Now too slow
dark mode did nothing on previous version however its option were available on devoloper settings, but now it is gone!
hide notch is back but it is very buggy.
i received the update notification but upon clicking it there was no update, had to do it manually xiameme seems too poor to afford servers.
My diarrhea still haven't got better.

Android Q Beta bugs and experiences

Now that funkyhuawei has released the beta leak today i guess it is ok to discuss it here
My findings are getting updated in the FP.
My bugs:
Camera integration in third party apps do not work (like whatsapp or telegram)
Sometimes green lines in video when playing Netflix
Dark mode sometimes is messed up
Video sometimes does not show or has green lines
Findings:
Do a factory reset and after that install Q otherwise it will not work
Info still showing android 9 and emui 9.1
ADB shell is showing android Q
Little font changes, most of the time the letters are bigger
Not Certified
Juli security patch
Camera version 10.0.0.200
No better multitasking? The same as older version?
On oppo reno it shows really nice iphone x style multitasking on android q.

No... This is oppo reno on android q: https://youtu.be/oneWq5bTN0E
I was hoping that huawei would also do about the same.
And are annoyances of the older versions fixed?
1. No "ok google".
2. No google assistant on lock screen.
3. Custom launcher breaks animations of closing apps and multi tasking.
4. Notifications on lock screen disappear once unlocked.

That would be a fundamental change to huawei i think.
So if you get a notification on the lock screen, you proceed to unlock, immediately lock, turn on screen, the notification is still there? (So not doing anything with the notification itself)

After the first Android Q flash my phone was halted at the Huawei logo.
I left it for at least 15 minutes but nothing was happening.
So i did a factory reset.
Follow this procedure for that https://www.hardreset.info/devices/huawei/huawei-p10/recovery-mode/
After that i switched off the phone, but it automatically powers back on.
So the next part is a bit tricky and may fail.
When you hold the power and the phone is off, release powerbutton and hold the volumedown while connecting the usb cable.
You then should enter flash recovery and can flash with Hisuite again

General Notifications not working properly

Since getting my Pixel 6 I've noticed that notifications, in every way are absolutely horrible on this phone. So far I'm chalking it up to Android 12 (which I hate the interface of BTW, I can't wait for a custom ROM to fix this mess that Google gave us). From low notification volume (even if the volume is turned up) to not receiving notifications, to the notifications not synching to my Fitbit (which I had 0 issues with on my ROM'ed OP6) I seem to have a lot of issues with this Pixel 6. It is not rooted, just some standard apps installed, including aodNotify.
Also, does anyone else have the issue of when you swipe up and hold to go to the recent apps, it just shows you a zoomed out home screen and you can't swipe right to see recent apps? So no way to switch between apps or close them...very annoying.
Anyone else having issues with not receiving notifications or texts at all? I just had my girlfriend tell me she sent me a message, but I never go it at all. It would have been a basic SMS from her iPhone, and we're both on Mint Mobile (T-Mobile MVNO) in a major city in the US with 5G.
Notification work fine.
I would first look at aolNotify which clearly effects the notification system and is in beta testing.

I just uninstalled it, let's see if that helps, good call. I was just thinking if it's an aodNotify issue surely other people would be talking about it :\
I guess I'm just having a ton of different issues since being on this phone, that I'm eagerly awaiting TWRP and ROMs to come out.
Any news on TWRP? I had pretty much written it off, but I guess they are still working on getting A11 support. I think they had a working version for the Pixel 3a series that was released (beta testing) in the last month or two. I never bothered to try it because A12 was right around the corner.

Same here using the navbar but it only happens every once in a while, no idea why.
I find notifications to be very low indeed and some of them (like email) are delayed. Not sure if we should blame this horrible A12 (yes I also absolutely HATE it) or the device

No news as of yet, that I know of. But now that there's a working root and the firmware and kernel is released, I would imagine it is being worked on, or at least I hope it is. Just as custom ROMs, as I am hoping to run Lineage or CalyxOS once available.

Good to know it's less common using navigation buttons. I just switched back from gesture (I was trying to get used to it and adopt the new way of life lol, but guess not - back to the same old buttons it is!) and I have already noticed that the recent app menu has been working much better.

Yes, notifications have also been delayed at times as well I've noticed. I doubt it's the device, as hardware is hardware, and apps open/close quick and smoothly, browsing the web is no issue, as is scrolling on apps like Instagram in my experience. Though with this being the only phone (P6/P6P) with A12 so far, I guess time will tell if it's a device issue or Android issue. I still feel like it's a P6 ROM issue, and hopefully ROMs will come soon to resolve issues like this.
Just as an update, since uninstalling aodNotify and switching to navigation buttons instead of gestures my notifications have been better and my recents list showing has been more reliable. It's still a bit laggy when loading recent apps, but at least it's working more often now
One weird thing I've noticed with the notifications is when I swipe down on the status bar and tap the triangle to expand the notification, the window stays small but I can scroll the entire notification within it. I'll try to get a screenshot the next time it happens.
That's not normal and not what I am experiencing. A reboot doesn't clear it up? If not. it may be that you'll need to do a factory reset just to clear out whatever the issue is.
Ugh, I hope I don't need a factory reset. I had enough trouble getting my eSIM setup on Fi already. I haven't experienced the notification issue again, so fingers crossed, wood knocked, etc.
