Stock ROM MIUI. - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

Hello all
Recently I have purchased a Note 4 Nikel which arrived with MIUI 8.2 Global As I am quite restless, very quickly requested the unlock of the bootloader and flashed TWRP.
Now I would like to flash some custom ROM, but I do like to have a “safe” place to return. Already have a nandroid image of my “unlocked” MIUI 8.2 with system, data, nvram, boot and recovery, but a Little bit concerned about not beig able to, at least come to this if things goes wrong.
I have tried to flash a MIUI oficial upgrade (to 8.5.Idonotremember) with no sucess, global and chinese versions. It says has not been able to flash for “other reason”. Wonder if
• I am using the right roms (http://en.miui.com/download-309.html)
• Wont be able to flash anything coming from Xiaomy being unlocked
• I can relock
• There are Stocks MIUI for the nickel flashable using TWRP
If any of you could solve my doubts, I would be grateful.
Also if you have any recomendation for custom ROMS. Would be very welcome
Regards and thank you!!!

Want to Unlock BL & flash AOSP ROM [SD]

Hi Devs,
I have tried to unlock bootloader [SD] by Mi Official method but got no success. :crying:
Always stuck at 50%.
I am wondering if the BL is unlocked via an unofficial way then can I flash AOSP based roms right away.
If yes, kindly suggest a way to unlock BL because I came across with so many threads each is somewhat different.
I have changed MIUI roms to try my luck say global -> global beta -> (soft brick) -> china beta.
Got confused, currently I am on China Dev Rom.
My Understanding till now ---
1. Unlock BL
2. FLash TWRP
3. Wipe All
4. Flash CM firmware -> Flash AOSP rom
5. Success...:silly:
Kindly guide if anyone had done this before.
i was having something similar to you.
i wanted to flash cyanogen roms but i didnt waited until i get the unlocker code from xiaomi.
i followed this tutorial
https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/method-to-flash-twrp-recovery-unlock-t3473294
it makes you flash a dev/beta global miui rom (i suggest you 6.9.29) with a custom recovery (you delete the stock recovery and replace it with a custom one like aika recovery or zcx recovery). then use the app miflash (latest version support windows 32 &64 bit, olders ones only 64 bit) to flash the entire miui rom.
When you finished you will have a miui rom with custom twrp. Then you boot to recovery (dont let the phone boot to system) and twrp will overwrite stock recovery) then you reboot to system and there you go. You will have miui and a fully working custom recovery (there you can flash supersu, cyanogen roms, xposed, and every other zip you want)

I have gone through full thread. https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/method-to-flash-twrp-recovery-unlock-t3473294
For some it works, but no one has widely used it to flash custom kernal or rom. All again stayed on MiUI.
It seems that nobody is quite clear about how this stuff works because members have asked questions like
How would official TWRP boot on locked BL
Working of Custom kernals
Modified BLs
I am planning to flash Unofficial LineageOS 7.1.1 or RR.
kindly confirm If you did this on Kenzo itself with some custom kernal and rom.

I did it with Kate. The only difference is that i change "cm14 firmware" to put Kate módem (original cm14 firmware has kenzo modem).
You are missing drivers on PC thats why you are getting 50% error... Sign in i.mi and locate...install MiFlash on PC 64bit, win7+, if you are on china dev ->turn on usb debbugging-> boot in fastboot mode, use original cable run MiUnlock and unlock, it will work 100%. I have unlocked BL so many times on different computers...and it always worked...if done all right

Further drivers from MIFlash tool are also present in my PC.
If you have a specific version kindly tell me.

Some questions switching from Official LOS to Umang96's

Hello!
I apologize in advance for being a noobie at this.
I'm currently running LOS 14 - 2017 05 03, and want to switch to Umang96's custom LOS. I've read I need to flash a new MIUI Firmware, but I have some questions before I do all this.
Do I have to flash the firmware before I flash the new ROM ? Or can they be flashed together ?
Do I have to wipe anything else than the usual before flashing ?
Will the bootloader lock again after I flash the new MIUI Firmware ? (I've currently unlocked it the official way)
Thanks in advance.
The "New MIUI firmware"=Developer version MIUI 7.5.4 firmware by The Strix for Redmi Note 3 Pro/Snapdragon in Official Lineage OS for Kenzo (google it).
To update firmware:
- Long+safe+cleanest method: Flash miui 7.5.4 fastboot rom (again, google it) for your device (kenzo/kate). Then, unlock officially.
- Quick method: Flash firmware.zip from 1st page of official lineage os thread for kenzo (WARNING: may cause bootloop for some users especially if you have no idea what you have done to your device).
Flash the firmware before flashing rom.zip. I have no idea what do you mean by flashing together. BTW you don't have to flash firmware when you update rom.
Wipe everything besides where you've stored your rom.zip (either internal storage or sd storage). I recommend using latest official twrp to prevent wiping important parts of your phone (some users are using unofficial twrps with option to wipe imei... just don't use it since you said you are a noobie)
Since you unlocked it officially, updating firmware shouldn't relock bootloader. There's a chance of relocking though (buggy MiFlash, flashing random firmwares from the internet and maybe other stuff)
If you have any future questions better post it in the thread than start a new Q&A thread. I don't think any users will spend time in the Q&A section. Umang's los discussion thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/unofficial-lineageos-substratum-radon-t3592853
Umang just started a new thread for his rom: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/unofficial-lineageos-substratum-radon-t3592853

Thank you for your answer!
By "flashing together" I was refering to the TWRP's option to flash multiple zips together.
Also, I will refrain from making new threads in the future, thanks for the tip.
Again, thanks for the info you provided. Much appreciated.

Reverting back to MIUI - Any chances of hard brick?

I was on MIUI 10 Global Beta which seemed to be slow. So i flashed the DotOS v2.5 which is an Oreo 8.1.0. Treble Status = Supported. After using a month i felt that the battery drains a lot quicker in this rom. I badly want to revert back to MIUI 9. I am on Orange fox 3.2.3 recovery. Will flashing the MIUI 9 hard brick my phone? Its a noob questions. Please answer me only if you have tried.
Worked for me
Hi there,
if you're using the tools and instructions provided by xiaomi you should be fine. Have fun!

Read point #3 here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76885728&postcount=3
Off course you can, but be advised the custom twrp will be replaced by stick recovery
Use Fastboot method and your phone will be new and clean .
But you can try other Custom Roms, there a lot of Roms out there.
Just check for bugs and features accordingly
Don't flash any recovery, just install the rom from fastboot, everything will be stock after that.
Of course you can revert back. No way you can hard brick your device if it's a clean flash be it MiUi or aosp. If you listen to a ROM tester's advice I recommend you to flash latest Orange Fox recovery then Xiaomi EU ROM which are always good, trustable and bloatware free. They're stable and up to date. I'm highly against stock MiUi ROMs for several reasons for example Chinese or Google bloatware, lots of them according to which MiUi ROM you flash (Global or China).

Redmi note 4x (SD) Help Guide for flashing from stock MIUI to custom pie rom?

Hi everyone, I want to use a Pie based ROM. Now I am using stock MIUI 9.6 Global bootloader unlocked. What would be the best procedure to flash a pie based ROM? And can I come back to MIUI if I want? What am I going to sacrifice if I flash treble ROM? I know It's a lot of questions but please try to answer it. Thanks in advance ?

If you have an unlocked bootloader, it's going to be easy. Install TWRP or OrangeFox Recovery. You will get the instructions in the respective pages of XDA. Then, take a complete backup of all partitions using TWRP/OrangeFox, back up the apps using Titanium Backup, and then get a ROM of your liking, and install it.
You are not going to sacrifice anything if you flash a treble ROM. You can revert to MIUI 10 at any point.
But do keep in mind that Android Pie ROMs are quite new and might have a bug or two.
Unlock Bootloader first
Flash twrp
Flash cusrom
Flash GApps
Flash Magisk (if you want to root)
Reboot

The posts above me has mentioned the method to flash custom treble ROM. In case you find any difficulty in flashing it, you can PM me. The procedure they mentioned are simple enough and the steps are user friendly. Take a recovery backup once you flash your custom ROM. You can come back to MIUI anytime you want.
I had flashed ROMs for various versions including Treble ROMs. In regards to selection of treble roms, you find whichever customisation features and options you like and select them.
I find MIUI to be stable enough for daily use. In case you are a flashaholic like me then you can try all the custom ROMs and check which is stable enough for your use.
I faced a major difficulty of signal instability with custom ROMs. Fyi I am in India and the network is JIO. I found too many blank spots and lesser signal quality. Apart from that the ROMs are fluid and fast enough.
Is it okay to install redmi note 4 roms on my redmi note 4x(sd)?

Upgrading MIUI 9 to MIUI 10 on an International Mi Pad 4

Hi!
Before attempting anything I wanted to ask this here:
I have a non-rooted, completely stock Mi Pad 4 bought from Gearbest. It is the international version (Model name: M1806D9W) that came with Google Apps, already with english language, etc. It currently runs MIUI Global 9.6 | Stable 9.6.7.0.0(ODJCNFD) (Android 8.1.0 OPM1.171019.019)
I read online that MIUI 10 should be available for global versions which I think mine is? But yet system updates tell me there are no updates available.
So here's my question: What is the simplest most straightforward way to upgrade to MIUI 10?
I see I can download ROMs from threads here and other places online but I want to make 100% sure of which one should I get.
Bonus question: Any way of backuping everything so I don't have to re-install, reconfigure, re-place my apps icons, etc?
Thanks so much!
pretty sure the international version that your reseller claim is false.. there are no international version now.. they probably loaded an "international modified" rom .. highly recommend you to flash xiaomi EU rom already comes with prebuilt playstore if you ur bootloader is already unlocked. if not, flash official chinese miui 10 rom and they are many guides to get playstore on chinese rom as well.

Ok I see! So once I upgrade to MIUI 10 I will have OTA updates then?
This is the one I need right? https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-pad-4/how-to/rom-miui-10-xiaomi-eu-links-t3864882
Also is there any way of restoring my apps, settings, etc like it is on MIUI 9 right now? OR will I really need to start all over again?
EDIT: I don't believe my Mi Pad 4 is rooted. This seems like good instructions on how to root it and flash a new rom? https://en.miui.com/thread-3196420-1-1.html
Thanks so much!
i just flashed my mi pad 4 . It had the same rom, just modified rom to include the playstore,
The bootloader is already unlocked.
just boot to fast boot. volume key + power
flash twrp - i used twrp installer bat from here en.miui.com/thread-3196420-1-1.html
once boots twrp, then flash miui 10 - androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=281632
job done.

yeah the link is correct, with xiaomi Eu rom you can still get official updates, maybe just slight delay from official chinese stream. but that's the best support we have so far for international miui roms now. the check update seems to be quite buggy on xiaomi eu rom, sometime it downloads but fails on completion.. just try again.. 2nd try is the charm as always haha. if not you can download the rom and dirty flash no problem, i was on beta previously so maybe thats why.
highly recommend you to start from fresh.. migrating over apps may result in bug occurrence.
