I'm experiencing an odd issue on the SD RedMi Note 4 of my wife (ROM: v8.5.8.0 NCFMIED): where LTE signal is weak and other mobiles switch to GSM (2G) and are still reachable, the RedMi of my wife is still trying to get LTE signal, ending up offline for _long_ times.
I tried to switch preferred mode to "LTE/UMTS auto (PRL)" (mido default choice when "prefer LTE" is selected is "LTE/TD-SCDMA/UMTS", which appears to include the Chinese 3G standard too) like my OnePlus 3, which never looses network, but it didn't help: the only way to have it reliably reachable is switching to "GSM only".
I didn't find anything relevant neither by searching nor by browsing the first 30 pages of this subforum: is there anything we can do to improve this? Thanks!
go to about phone. tap multiple times on total memory, a window will open up. open phone information 1,2. choose type of network you want from multiple options

That indeed solves the issue as I wrote, but I don't think that my wife would be happy if I tell her she has to check the signal all the time and, eventually, _try_ to manually switch to "GSM only", and go back when the signal strength improves... that should be modem job!
Update: the affected SIM was in slot 2; moving the SIM to the first slot seems to improve the mode switch. Still the sensitivity doesn't seem exceptional, or perhaps there is some other issue (1), but at least it seems to correctly switch from 4G to 3G and even 2G where the signal is weak.
Testing in "LTE/UMTS auto (PRL)" mode now (I don't need TD-SCDMA here, I assume there is less overhead with less modes); wondering whether is a modem (read: Qualcomm) issue or a MIUI bug.
(1) sometimes the device still looses the network where my OP3 seems connected with very weak signal (-105 dBm) and LTE Discover reports "Potential eCSFB issue detected" (which sounds odd since eCFSB is a CDMA thing, and there aren't any CDMA network here in Italy AFAIK: could it be the way LTE Discover tells that the phone is unable to handshake an existing network?), until it reconnects. Moreover, it seems that RN4 tends to prefer 3G over 2G even when mobile data is off, which is not a good strategy IMO.
Edit: LTE Discover reports "Potential eCSFB issue detected" also on OP3, which works perfectly: it seems its shown when the terminal was unable to successfully register on a network and stays idle until the next connection attempt
I have sort of similar and opposite problems in the USA.
Mine switches from LTE to whatever H+ is and then never switches back on its own. I'm blaming Xiaomi over Qualcomm.

I tried it, it worked if I used the root option and manually hit the refresh button. I read that the auto refresh only works if the signal is one bar or whatever or less.
My signal is strong when it's on H+, so it would never get low enough to make it auto refresh.
What I need is something that would switch my preferred network to Prefer 3G and back to Prefer LTE whenever I'm on H+ for a while, because that gets me back on LTE every time provided that there's LTE in that area.
My Redmi Note 4x international should be capable to connect to the 1800mhz band, which is available in my neighborhood. Sadly I haven't had 4g or LTE since I've gotten this phone (4 weeks) any ideas why it won't connect?

Thank you: started testing. It seems that, despite the better signal, even after refreshing the device still ignores 2G and tries to connect in LTE or H+ mode. I'll see in the next days.

Yep, that's very same issue I'm experiencing. I was feeling alone: in the MI forums I couldn't find no one complaining about that.
Did you notice that when the device connects to a Wi-Fi network the cellular signal indicator suddenly rises (it appears to indicate Wi-Fi signal strength) and appears "4G" next to operator's name, even if cellular data is off?
Too bad, if RN4 didn't have such a bugged radio it was a real bang for the buck.

Try to get some more info from the "LTE Discovery" app: is the device registered on the 4G network but internet access is absent or the device doesn't even register on the 4G network? Does the device detect the 4G signals?
In this thread we are discussing about the opposite problem: our devices don't switch to 2G when the signal is weak...

Unfortunately it didn't help: it doesn't seem to improve overall operation. It even asks to refresh the Wi-Fi connection when there is no cellular signal...
There is really something ill in this modem. Sometimes the signal indicator shows Wi-Fi signal strength instead of cellular. I hope some future release will fix at least some of these issues.

Thank you. I think it's not necessary: since yesterday I'm running MIUI v9.0.3.0 and things improved considerably. I'm quite sure the issue was MIUI 8 which had a complete modem mess, not the app, that was doing its honest work just as it was possible.

Ever since I've transferred to AT&T I've had laggy data issues. I finally rooted/flashed to AOKP, and while trying to address the issues of no APNs appearing or saving and no signal status in the status bar, I've come to find both AT&T and T-Mobile as Available Networks under some network setting. Am I chasing ghosts here, or is there something actually up?
EDIT: So I really need help troubleshooting the issue. I'll logcat, dump, or whatever necessary. I've been in many cities/areas and this problem persists: if I haven't used data or the phone hasn't been backgrounding traffic, it'll take anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds before a connection is made when I try to access an internet-related function on my phone (even though 3G/H is displayed in the status bar). Out of shear frustration (this has been happening since I got the phone, under stock ROMs and now under AOKP), I tried messing with *#*#info#*#*. I changed WCDMA-preferred to WCDMA-only -- no improvement. Oddly, I also tried GSM-only. Well, great improvement! Even though I only have E, there is absolutely no latency in waiting for a connection -- so pages and other data end up loading faster on Edge than 3G !
I have absolutely no idea why my phone takes forever to make a connection. Under 3G, I see only but a few upstream network activity blips (even under full bars) for as much as 30 seconds, before there is any downstream activity (and when it comes, it comes). Can anyone help???
P.S.: I'm going to try using a friend's SIM later for comparison.

The phone displays 3G because thats what it is... then when data is being processed, it shows H because its using the "what AT&T calls 4G but its really HSPA" side of the network. For just standby time with no data, its going to show 3G because HSDPA is traffic, not standby.

Well that's strange. I'm used to phones displaying what network-level they are capable of. So why would it not just display H for HSPA+ when HSPA+ service is available, instead of only displaying under traffic.
I'm going to go ahead an edit this thread to help troubleshoot what I think to be the main issue.
After some trials I see that the network indicator switches back and forth between 3G and H a few tines before making the connection and transmitting data. Hmmm...
Basically, "4G" will eat your battery alive so the phone idles at 3G and jumps to H+ only when you use data. If you were on a "stock" ATT rom it would always read H+, but this is technically false since when its idle the phone sits in 3G. CM9 and AOKP accurately display it which is why you see the switch.

I have a HTC Amaze for a phone and the Galaxy S2 is my media player. Sometimes, when I don't feel like carrying around two devices, I put my T-Mobile SIM in the galaxy and use it as my phone. I must say, Edge is not as slow as I remember it being. Maybe speed is contingent on network traffic. If thats the case, instead of using crowded "faux G" networks, I may defer to Edge to save battery life and get good dl/ul rates.
My phone does the same thing. I noticed it sometime ago. When idle 3g. Internet I get H+. This is with both Shostock2 and Phone Bricker. I was curious to know too but just blew it off because it really doesnt make any difference to me as long as Im getting decent speeds. Im not even with ATT anymore. Went with Straight Talk. Which uses ATT towers. Cant beat the price!!
They don't have the correct apns, but that symbol problem is because the phone doesn't use hspa+ passively, only actively. It causes some lag when downloading, but it is faster fit large data. But your problem is due to a supposed imei range with bad modems. Rehash stick, fix the triangle, and return it.

I had that problem with my sprint m9. Had it for a week with no problem then suddenly no data connect. No 3g or LTE for a couple days. Just Wi-Fi. I took it to a local corporate store and the best tech there eventually swapped out the sim and it's been connecting since. She told me sometimes the cards are bad from the start. Of all the phone's I've had that was a first for me.
Hmmm, mine seemed spotty today. A couple times I showed good 3G or LTE signal, but couldn't get data through.
Toggling airplane mode seemed to help.

so i had the same issue and when i got the new OTA the other day which has a new radio I think the data issues are even worse..
Try a profile update. I activated my phone in a non-sprint area and got really terrible 3g and NO 4g in known LTE saturated areas. Once I returned to my hometown I updated the profile and PRL and I instantly got LTE and the spark logo.

I'm having similar issues.
So far, I tracked it down to this...
If I am on WiFi and then switch off, it will connect to LTE. At that time, some items such as Mail, Facebook, talking to Google, etc. quit working. It just times out. However, I can still browse the web and perform other functions. It will work if I switch back to WiFi or 3G, but so far it appears that I have to restart the phone to get everything working under LTE at that point.
Can others confirm this?

im having some similar issues. ill lose connectivity on LTE but it wont be disconnected from the LTE network, but switching to 3g or wifi works...ive narrowed it down to when I have a weak LTE signal. My house has always had a weak signal and thats where i notice it the most, I compared with my m8 and the signal levels are the same and connected to the same tower yet the m8 will work while the m9 acts like theres no connection at all, If i go outside and get a slightly better signal the m9 will work great.

There is also a discussion about the same issue over on the Sprint Community forum: https://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/204027
I have come across this as well, it's usually when I use more than 4 GB of data over sprints network. I sent a message to sprint telling them their service is shotty at times, never heard anything back yet but haven't run into data connect issues (since then). Also I've heard you can complain about signal strength and if you put in the time (going to supervisor to supervisor) they will send you a device to boost your signal. Or you can just pay for the signal booster device. This is just my opinion and what I have heard, don't quote Bubba

Definitely a radio issue. We need a radio update bc this is killing the battery as well.

I'm constantly having the issue, and I've been advised to swap for a later release. My local stores are sold out, so I will advise once I have it swapped.
Any other possible solutions?
I did a swap myself and is not a hardware issues, I believe is the radio. I downloaded this signal check app to see what type of network connection is always on. I notice when connected on LTE, I have no problem. When it connects to 3g is where I have the issues especially indoors. It kinda tells me is connected in notification bar, but the network connection is stuck on 1xrtt.

My problem, and what I have read from most others is on LTE. It works on 3G and WiFi.
Would this affect Hangouts messages from not coming through? If I'm not on WiFi, I'm on LTE, and message notifications won't come through when off of WiFi. They of course come in fine on WiFi....
It's weird...I was sitting at my desk and my phone was jumping back and forth between Sprint 25 and 41 every few seconds...I did the profile update and now I'm solidly on 25 steady.
I've also seen jumps to Verizon LTE which is sort of my blowing.
Hoping this also solves the issue in a spot near my house that I was dropping data completely where before I at least had a useable 3G signal.
I recently purchased an Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro phone (kenzo), it covers all the bands that rogers uses in my area in Canada, I believe.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogers_Wireless
I can connect with the phone on LTE, HSPA+ with no problem, if available. Sometimes, if I am in certain area's, the signal indicator drops to 3G .... it shows a decent signal, but no calls or data can go through.
In this example on the following chart, the first WCDMA connection,my phone only indicates 3G and I can not make a call or use data. When my call attempt is done, it goes back to LTE. Then I try again. Then for the second WCDMA connection on the chart, I am connected as H+, I can make a call and use data. Whenever this phone connects to CID 31072 the problem happens. When I connect to CID 31075, no problem. These are just examples of towers that I reach from my home. I get the same problem occuring other areas.
Any suggestions on what I need to change on my phone? Is my phone making a kind of 3G connection for some reason, which Rogers doesn't support? I have tried everything I can think of, Miui dev versions, CM13, LineageOS 14.1 etc, change Android Radio Menu settings, etc.
Nothing seems to fix this issue.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I have been using Network Signal Guru, and have figured out that the phone will connect calls data on 3g if the band it finds is B5-850M .... if the tower tries to connect to is B2-PCS-1900 the call fails.
I tried to block the use of band 2 with Network Signal Guru, but it seems to still use it when it finds it.
I have since flashed a LineageOS rom and used the Network Signal Guru to disable band 2 WCDMA. The phone has not been experiencing the issue at all since. I am cautiously optimistic that I have found a solution. Still not sure why this band doesn't work here though.
Had my x1 for a couple of days now and lots to like about it however I have noticed that it seems to have a very weak phone signal reception.
I am on three in the UK and in the normal areas I travel I have never noticed an issue on my other phones with it struggling to hold on to signal bars.
Anyone else have this?
Signal bars mean absolutely nothing. Many oem even show full bars even when there is actually no signal.
Better install cellmapper app that will exactly show and record the signal where you travel.
Also, do you have 3uk volte working?(calls over 4g network)
Well all I can say is that I live less than a mile from the nearest mast and would nearly always have full signal bars on other phones yet on this phone it drops on and off 1 bar.
I will download the app you mentioned and see what that shows
I've had this problem with numerous Sony phones over the years, always poor signal compared to Sammy's, Pixel's and iPhones that I've had. Same issue with the X1 I have now, always on WiFi calling and no signal, my Pixel 3 XL would be happily sitting on 4G.

Glad it's not just me then.
I do remember having this issue on a previous Sony phone also but can remember the model now. It's been a long time since I had a Sony but thought this one was going to tick every box which it almost does apart from having reliable signal reception which is really should be a must!
Is there anyway they can improve this with software of are we stuck with it due to hardware issues?

I am having the same problem, I'm on EE and my LTE keeps dropping from 4 bar's to 1 bar then nothing which causes me to lose data connection. It then jumps to 4 bar's again and then repeats this over and over. This is happening at home where I always have full reception. I have tested my sim in 5 different phones all have full reception and don't lose connection only my Xperia 1 does! Any help would be appreciated.
Same problem for me. I switched my SIM from Galaxy S8 to X1. S8 has 4 to 5 bars while X1 struggles with getting one bar at home.
Ffs... The bars mean nothing. Sony phones take into consideration RSRQ(signal quality) and SINR(s noise) values of the signal. Other oem don't. The actual signal power RSRP (do not confuse it with bars) is same or better on Sony.
Xperia 1 has most advanced modem and antenna setup of any 4g phone. 4x4 mimo even on low bands (first to have it).
3uk and ee are special in the sense that they need phone to support volte to get access to their low band spectrum(band 20).
So make sure you have volte aka 4g calling enabled and check with apps like Netmonster or Cellmapper the band and RSRP of the signal. Then compare it with other phones at the same place.

If it's as simple as that why is it not enabled on this phone already?
I think what you seem to be over looking is the fact that I and others here have said that yes the bars are lower than other phones and flutter slot but also to the point where they drop completely and give no reception at all. A situation not faced on other phones.
Can you explain how we enable this missing band so that the phone can provide a more reliable/stable reception
Does your phone have 3uk volte(4g calling) enabled? Phone should stay in 4g during call. If not then you are out of luck.
ee users can install EE firmware to get Volte working if it's not already . newflasher on xda helps to change firmware.
And please compare signals with abovementioned apps.

If you're having signal drops / dropped phone calls etc... I get it. But Sony is historically notorious for showing lower signals than others on those bars. However, as stated, the bars are pretty meaningless. I've owned many Sony's, and while the bars are lower (sometimes all empty), I still have signal in all the places I should. YMMV.

Yes
I also have only 1 bar... Orange.
If you are EE UK user, then you need EE firmware on your Xperia 1 to get best network compatibility(Volte and low band support because of it).
3UK users probably need also 3UK firmware but that does not seem to exist yet.
This weirdness of low band access is specific to two UK operators. Everywhere else the device is fully capable of best 4g experience.

So for those of us on three network but purchased the phone sim free are stuck with the problem as three do not sell this handset themselves so unlikely to release any firmware for it.
That does not look good for me so I think I will need to return within my 14 days.
Shame.
There's definitely a network connectivity issue with the XP1 right now though. This seems to affect only XP1's on the EE network, which were *not* bought from EE direct, i.e. ones with stock firmware. (e.g. mine!)
The symptoms are that periodically, first the 4G symbol disappears, then the signal goes to zero and you've lost the internet. Then it reconnects back onto 4G again. Sometimes this repeats 3 or 4 times in succession. The whole thing takes from 5 seconds to maybe 30 seconds depending on how many re-tries.
You can go for maybe an our or so without a problem, or sometimes it happens like every 10 minutes.
And here's the key part: this happens wherever you are, even on a full strength signal. As far as I can make out, this affects ALL XP1s with stock firmware on EE. EE say it's a Sony problem. Sony say it's a network issue. So we are all stuck.
Does anyone know of a suitable network logging app, which will log 4G disconnects and signal loss, so we can provide evidence to EE and Sony?

(My phone is fine with a Vodafone sim. There's something specific to the phone firmware/config - timers, buffer sizes, packet sizes - whatever - and the EE network. But right now, on EE, it's unusable.)
Is anyone else whos on sprint/TMobile having issues where the phone cant decide wether to connect to a sprint or TMobile tower? When im at my home i have a very weak TMobile 600mhz signal and a strong sprint band 41 signal due to the magic box. I also can pick up the band 25 signal the box uses and my phone refuses to just use the stronger faster sprint signal. It absolutely insists on using the TMobile signal. Is anyone having similar issues? Even on wifi its causing network interruptions so i have to reload a page several times to make it use the wifi.

Mine jumps a lot but never connects to the magic box. I don't think it's enabled for B41? I have a Pixel 3XL that I activate (and deactivate my V60) when I'm at my camper which is where my MB lives.

Mine works with Band 41. Its a big one in the nearby city. It works with all sprint and TMobile bands. Its just prioritizing TMobile bands over sprint ones regardless of signal quality

I have no idea of this is related but.. I'm on T-Mobile, with T-Mobile home internet as well, and for the last several days my phone is having issues connecting and the home WiFi is doing the same thing. I'm in a rural area so my signal is weak, but it's been fluctuating WILDLY since the merger and sometimes it does seem like my phone is struggling trying to decide what to connect to. There's definitely something going on with the network at least in my area for the last 2 weeks for sure

Sounds like this will be happening until the transition is done/5G is more widespread. These are TMobile models. When mine was first turned on at the store it had the T-Mobile splash screen. The ability to access sprint towers was added via software update post merger. I figure once the 600mhz band is fully rolled out the issue will go away as a result of the signal being strong enough.
