I disagree, except for proper updating, Pixel takes a lot of disadvantage compare to the lg g5, specs and even camera quality, I dont really know about software though, but I was always a fan of HTC since they had the most aesthetic UIs
I love my G5 so much, but from the reviews I've seen, I think the Pixel is a better choice if you don't care about the pricing.
Well I just put my pixel xl for sale im going
Back to the g5. Why ? Because Bluetooth audio quality is important to me APTXHD is not present in the pizel. That said the screen was awesome but not as bright as the g5. Speed was the same but the pixel was 200 ms faster at loading apps fresh. The paint on the pixel is so sensitive that I could scratch it off with my nails if i was trying to. Not worth the money the new one plus is better imo. Another thing is that the lg g5 display has a higher refresh rate objects that move appear clearer in motion compared to the pixel. I really loved it but a lot of apps are not compatible with 7.1. With it rooted battery issues formed and constant heating but I know its the roots fault. That said I only paid $300 for my g5 compared to the pixel, the g5 is a no brainer. And honestly the only thing I liked about the pixel was the launcher but I just flashed a zip and have it on the g5 now. The pixel has some good features though like font size and dpi change naturally. Also it was annoying to hold in one hand and i would always touch the screen from the side of my palm while typing. Imo a $700 piece of software is not worth it because its all your getting compared to the competition.

I paid almost $700 to have my H850 imported from the UK... I love this phone; LG may have some questionable bootloader policies but this phone kills it in terms of optimization compared to most of the competition. My girlfriend has a vzw branded Note 7 and besides the stylus and the amazing screen, that phone was awful! UI was slower and incredibly bloated confusing and ugly, memory management was absolutely horrible, and despite having a much larger battery(albeit explosive) my phone always got much better battery life.
She now has a Pixel XL 128gb otw to replace her Note 7 and I'm excited to compare our phones.
Your argument about frame rate is the most compelling argument I've heard yet about why the Pixel may not be worthy of the flagship crown; I don't doubt you, but do you have numbers to backup that claim? And aren't AMOLED supposed to be brighter, and isn't Pixel rated at higher lumens than our G5(too intoxicated to remember if I'm using the correct jargon but hopefully you know what I mean)? And why would rooting change much in regards to heat and battery life if one is still using the stock kernel and ROM? Once again not challenging your claim, just curious about the details.
To reiterate I love my G5, the wide angle camera, the stock UI, the firmware optimization... I've had zero issues with this phone. But if money was of no consequence I would have a hard time choosing between the two. The Pixel may be ascetically unappealing(perhaps even repulsive) but it's made by the people who designed the OS in the first place, the camera is truly incredible, and one would never have to worry about speedy updates or lack of development... But I do love my double tap to wake! That feature should be an industry standard... Just out of curiosity, can you use DTW on your ported Pixel launcher with the G5?
A co-worker has a OnePlus 3T Otw as well cant wait to finally see a OnePlus in person and compare... For $440 that phone has Killer specs and a promising reputation... Can't stand capacitive buttons tho so I would probably never own one
G5 better except for one small big issue, GPS. Too many reports of the GPS issue. Other than that, G5 wins for me.

My GPS is OK too, I'm just saying there are many users who encountered the GPS issue. Just trying to be objective. I have my G5 since May and I enjoy it a lot. Never failed me and the camera is just great. I carry a spare battery in my bad all the time so my charger never leaves home. Pixel is just seriously overpriced (common thing with HTC). I means, look at Oneplus 3 (3T).. so much cheaper , looks better, clean OS..why pay more? I mainly got the G5 for the camera. Love the wide angle too.
Just to prevent the overpriced comments, I'm getting the pixel for the same price as the G5.
About the refresh rate, I actually have used the G5, and while scrolling some text turns blurry (was that model faulty?). Also shouldn't (in theory) the pixel have a higher refresh rate due to an amoled screen and daydream support?

Technically the pixel LCD is brighter but Google does not let it pass a certain point in brightness however if you flash a custom kernel you can enable high brightness mode . root is buggy 7.1 is really annoying to deal with the recovery is now knitted into the kernel you should read chainfires post about it. You can't just slap on a kernel or a new recovery version on top of what you already have you have to return to stock every time flash twrp flash kernel then supersu. Battery life was alright for a few days but then the phone started to over heat for no reason. Just laying there with no change on how I use it the only explanation I could think of was root after I went back to stock it went away. That's just my experience though.
What kind of question is this? Pixel costs 2x of what G5 costs.

All that aside, Pixel. Had the G5 since April, one software update (security patch) and all the annoying bugs/features still there.
Inside I have to adjust brightness every time I turn screen on due to the crap "auto brightness". That alone has made we ponder if I really like the wide angle lens enough to suffer the constant annoyance of screen being dim. Contacted LG and they gave some barmy excuse that I need to contact the local software team to raise this issue? It's an international phone and ROM!

Afaik the refresh rate on Android is fixed at 60 fps. Haven't had blurry text on mine yet. But I do suffer from faulty gps which is why I send mine in soon for repair.

Never had the issue. Or at least I didn't notice it. Am always happy with the brightness.
Though the camera module is the same as the lg g4 which is kind of disappointing. Overall a great camera but I still would have wanted a newer sensor to maybe get the same hdr speed as the pixel. Couldn't live without the optical stabilization anymore though... Then again I don't know how the electronic one is on the pixel.
For landscapes the wide angle lens is amazing.
I find the battery highly dependent on your network coverage. I get between 20 and 80 hours with 5 hours of screen on time. Depends on how much you are in locations with wifi and so on
Speed is simply amazing but then again I come from a rather outdated note 2 so I don't know how it improved over last year's flagships.
LG G5 anyday , G5 is close to Pixel in terms of everything , defeats Pixel in features. The camera is closest and hard to compare.

No one seems to care or notice this. I guess it's normal on the G5 and it's bothering me a lot. It's terrible and makes it mostly unusable.

The g5 I've used isn't that bad. It was blurry but only if I scrolled fast. I suggest u exchange your G5.

Nope. It's new. And it's just if you scroll "slow". Also the effect is misleading because the camera recording it shows it more significant than the human eye can catch.
First of all, sorry if this thread is in the wrong place, and I know that there have been a few comparisons between the two.
My 2 year contract is ending, and I was more interested about how you think they've aged during these 10-11 months since their release. In my country they are roughly the same price on a 2 year contract (the G5 is about 20-30 Euros cheaper than the S7).
I would like to hear from you about the everyday performance (battery, gaming, lags, heat problems?...basically every aspect). I've read that the cameras of the both phones are pretty much neck and neck, and that they are both excellent.
Which one would you recommend me for the next 2 years?
Thanks

G5 by far, The lag of the S7 is insane...
Enviado desde mi LG-H860 mediante Tapatalk
As he said the G5 has no lag. UI is smooth and I prefer it over TouchWiz. By other hand S7 is beautiful with all those glass and metal. In my country G5 is much cheaper than S7 so it was easy. I would still choose the G5 I prefer the camera, the UI and we are about to get Nougat.

I love my G5, but I feel the S7 won this round. If you like big screeb, the V20 is the best out there. Great phone! If you want removable battery, IR blaster, wide angle lens and best camera manual mode, go for G5. Go for the S7 for the better build, the better point&shoot camera and the better screen. The G5 camera is better if you know how to use it.. it is more capable. But if you just want a quick point&shoot, the S7 will do a better job. Overall I want to recommend the G5 because I like it a lot, but it has 2 major faults. One is the GPS, there ia a problem with the golden pins that lose contact with the antenna on the back of the phone. Quick and easy fix but atill annoying and should not happen on a flagship. Second is image retention. If you are Rooted, there is a quick and easy fix. If not, you will need Blue Light Filter app in the background. I'm rooted so I don't have this issue. My only issue so far is the GPS. Happened to me after 7 months. Fixed it in 10 minutes but i had to open the phone. For common user, S7 IMO (unless you can handle the V20 size and then of course V20).
Ans yes, UI is better on the G5 and smoother. Also the camera , for me , is much better. I like the better manual controls and the wide angle lens.

The only thing I am jealous bout with S7 is the water resistance and design. $20-30 cheaper? You sure? With my phone company huge price difference. I can get the G5 for $300 plus tax. S7 $800 plus tax.
The specs bout the same. LG g5 got a better cam. Just look at comparisons and you be the judge. I might have a biased view. LG G5 gets a lot of hate, but its a great phone.
I am sorry but that's a huge price difference and a bout the same specs. LG g5 has a better Cam, removable battery, sd slot, etc. Makes me pick LG G5 all day. Save yourself money bro get it.
Biggest issues with G5s is GPS and heat issues. GPS seems to not have issues with newer models. Mine was made in september. Check the box before you buy. Three people I know in real life bought new versions and no GPS issues.
That heat issue seems to happen a lot with heavy usage and full brightness up. Lowering the brightness seem to help a lot. It can be annoying at times. And a thick case like outter box seem to help that.

Yep, the price for just the phone G5 is 650 euros vs the 680 euros for the S7 in my phone company. When buying them on a 2 year contract, the price difference is even smaller (20 smth euros). I don't know how that's possible...
I'm considering the G5, because my G3 still works without any lag, and somehow it's Samsungs' phones custom to start lagging just before a newer version of the phone is released
How's the camera for just point and shoot, because I don't think I'll be making to many pictures using manual control? What's the problem with the GPS? Is it easily solvable or does it require to get a replacement unit? And around how much of screen on time do you get?
Im a phone addict for saying it in some way, i had iphone 6 Plus, Galaxy s6, Galaxy s5, Iphone 5, Iphone 4 after using them all got a LG G4 and the rest named are all sold.. After that i went with the LG G5 and to be perfectly honest, it wins over them all, i dont even gonna try S7 since G5 runs perfectly, no issues, smooth, great battery life, great updates, in my opinion best overall phone atm.. My friend is a Samsung fan and even him said G5 its better overall S7, so go ahead without doubts with the G5..
Saying no LAG seems pushing the truth a bit, here is my view of a user who has been using the S5 901f for a couple of years.
What probably has not helped the G5's cause in my case is that samsung made massive performance improvements on their android 6 touchwiz for the S5.
So I have basically been comparing my 901f to the G5 and also to the S7 edge who my brother in law owns and let me have a go with it. Its the more powerful variant of the S7 here in the uk not the snapdragon 820 version.
Also to consider thanks to a good custom kernel my S5 is well tuned, especially with using the zzmoove governor.
So
In terms of overall performance, I would say sadly my S5 beats my G5, the S7 beats them both.
The G5 is very fast at multitasking, so once stuff is loaded, you can switch between apps very quickly and they keep their loaded state, but for stuff not loaded its for some reason slower than both samsung phones.
Some stuff wont stay cached e.g. better battery stats and sms messages, both visibly LAG on my G5 when the simc ard is inserted, I gave the phone to my brother in law to play with, I didnt mention the performance and he commented the phone was laggy. (this was before I did tuning).
Also performance is not everything, when comparing the phone features, samsung wins hands down. The colour tone can be changed, the unique samsung features are actually useful, 2g only mode can be set, has auto redial, better dialer/contacts app.
Samsung has much bigger dev community on XDA, e.g. unless there is a private hidden forum, there is not one single working custom kernel for the G5, that is juat a big wow.
Amoled vs IPS, amoled is a very clear winner, I think what doesnt help the G5 is that its IPS is a poor IPS, my oneplusone phone is also IPS but has less backlight bleed, and better viewing angles than the G5. Amoled is just the pinnacle of flat screen display technology, even apple I think are moving to amoled for their next phones. I only need to look at my G5 slightly off angle and I have contrast shift. I expect overtime I would get used to it, but if you used to samsung displays I think you in for a shock.
Samsung has water resistance, in practice I am not sure its a huge deal, as the LG phone is still splash proof (e.g. it should be fine in the rain).
All this doesnt mean I think the G5 is a bad phone, there is definite stuff about it which is nice.
Has FM radio
Always on clock
Speaker placement is better at bottom
Camera app is better (in my opinion)
USB-C is very nice
Fast charging is nice (although the S7 has this also, but not my S5)
Less bloat on stock rom than samsung.
Much better memory management, especially it doesnt aggressively kill background apps like samsung does.
Faster storage
I hope my feedback is helpful, and of course what I prefer to have on a phone you may not agree with, in which case what I listed as flaws of the G5 may not be relevant to yourself.
Also worth mentioning samsung S7 has 2 spatial streams for wifi so AC is 866mbit, N is 150mbit on 2.4ghz and 300mbit on 5.ghz
LG is 433mbit for AC, 75mbit for N on 2.4 and 150mbit for N on 5
Here in the UK on EE the S7 has a large price premium over the G5 still, over a 2 year contract its an extra 15 month x 24 which is 360.
Thanks a lot!
I have had an LG G4 since Sept, 2015 and have been using it as my daily driver ever since. I was probably among the first ones in India to buy the LG G6. For clarification, the LG G6 (H870DS) sold in India has 64GB memory and comes with a 32-bit HiFi DAC. I loved the G6 right from its launch at MWC, so much so that I had made up my mind to get it as soon as it lands in India. The fact that it was available with an INR 10,000 cashback on the first day was the icing on the cake. I bought the Ice Platinum colour and received the device on 29th (requested later delivery).
I unboxed the phone around 3pm and used it for 2 hours straight. I had taken a half-day from work, I spent two hours with this device, I loved the aesthetics and this colour. LG has made a near perfect smartphone but it fell short in the one place where I had least expected it to. After about 3 hours of using this phone, I put up the return request with a very heavy heart. This is by far the best Android device I have ever used till date. Why did I return it, the burning question now.
The LG G6 has the worst front camera I have used on a smartphone since 2012. Period. It was worse than my old LG G2, Galaxy S4 and even the mid-ranger Moto G4 Plus. Coming from an LG G4, this was a major downgrade for me. I played around with the settings, found that the front was using a 3.7MP mode to scale to 18:9 but even moving to the 5MP mode didn't help. The camera was blotchy, unfocussed at most times, lacked any kind of sharpness and had very poor color reproduction.
I headed to the nearest LG service centre and also visited a Croma outlet that had a demo unit. After being certain that I had not received a lemon, I had to go for the return. For those wondering, the LG G4 is miles ahead of the front camera game with its 8MP autofocus sensor. The LG G6 is a fantastic device and probably is the best that LG could produce.
I do not understand how could LG engineers, marketing teams, quality control department or even their top ranking officials overlooked this. I am not sure how others have not mentioned this in their reviews. I searched around and found a couple of camera comparison videos that also show how poor the G6's front camera is when compared to other flagships. The OnePlus 3T has a much sharper sensor than the G6 and I always hated the OP3T front camera for the lack of details it captures!

Actually is a known thing of this device, and also the rear cameras are, on the hardware side, the worse piece of **** that LG could mount on a top device, but, well, at least with the reare the software has done miracles. Don't know about international reviewers, or the ones that review in your country, but in mine (italy) it was always said that the front camera is really bad.
But in my case i don't use the front camera, never used in any phone i've ever had (G2, G5 and now G6), i'm not a selfie person xD

Even if I were not a selfie person. Even if I never video called anyone. Even if I never switched on the front camera of the device, I wouldn't buy the G6. I would absolutely not be at peace knowing the fact that a flagship device with this price tag has anything that is inferior to even its own predecessors. The problem with the tech world today (I am looking at iPhone users here) is that they keep supporting these brands by buying whatever *** they put in their phones and never complain. If we do not complain, they wouldn't listen and the evolution of technology will suffer a set back!
Yes the results from the rear cameras are really good, but most reviews mention the poor quality of the front camera, don't know what LG was thinking?

Man, this is a phone, just buy whatever you want, without criticizing the others and you are good to go
Although I agree the G4S FFC was probably the best self camera I have used on a phone. I also greatly appreciate that this phone was $100 cheaper than other flag ships. The FFC is more than satisfactory for my needs

Sorry to hear that man. I know how frustrating it can get when something as simple as a front camera doesn't function the way it was supposed to, considering it's LG's best phone ever.
I was an S7E user till last week and would have switched to the S8 if I didn't have to deal with the terrible tempered glass issue with the edge displays. I have almost spent about 5 to 6 thousand only on the tempered glass and even when I used to put a new tempered glass on the S7E, the dust would start going in. Even with the S8, nobody has been able to make a proper tempered glass yet. And it almost looks like there will never be one. And the worst part was even with the tempered glass and a back case on, my S7E's display broke when it fell down from a 2 feet height. Though it still works fine and is usable, the tempered glass thing was too much to deal with. So i finally gave up on the edge displays.
Wanted to upgrade to some other phone, I have never been a fan of iPhones, so that was not an option for me. And was eagerly waiting for the G6 to arrive in India. And when I finally got my hands on it, I was very disappointed, to say the least. The front camera like you said was very bad, the display was not bright enough ( Compared to the iPhone 7 and Mi 5, both has IPS displays) and on top of it all, the disastrous pricing by LG. So I gave up on it and continued my struggle with the S7E.
But after a month to my surprise, LG had dropped the price by 10,000, the best price you can get it for now is 39,300 on Amazon. So looked up on OLX for a good deal and found some LG employee who had bought the G6 for 23,000 and managed to get it from him for 28,000. It was just one week old. It's a black one and the black color looks much much better than the silver one I had seen the first time. So I am kind of happy with it now. I think it's a pretty sweet deal for that price. The rear wide angle camera is crazy, I really love it and the battery is pretty decent too. And I don't know if they have released some software update or something, but the front camera looks much better compared to my first experience with it.
But yeah overall it's quite disappointing that LG releasing their flagship in 2017 could not put up few simple things in place. According to me, they should have made the display better ( The color reproduction and the brightness), the front camera certainly should have been much much better and the rear too in low light conditions. But if you can get a similar deal like I got, then probably its worth it. I like the device overall now, at least i don't have to deal with the tempered glass s*** anymore.
You all keep writing "flagship" in here about the G6. That is wrong. The V-series is their flagships not the G-series. Just a note.

OnePlus 5 getting returned. Picked up a new G6 for < $400 until the V30 comes out. Or the pixel 2. We shall see.

That is not entirely accurate! The V-series is their Top of the line model/device, but is not released world wide, it's only released in some select markets... For instance I have never seen an V-series in person ever, and I've tried looking for the V-10 and V-20 on OLX in the country I reside and neighbouring countries to purchase one, but found none... Then I read either the V10 or V20 (don't remember exactly which) was only released in the US and the other only in US and Europe...
A Flagship by definition, is the Ship or in this case the Smatphone that is high-end and represents the Brand, usually worldwide, which in this case is the G-Series... If you ask most people, they don't even know what a V10/20 is, what brand it is, and have probably never seen one, and if they had, they probably wouldn't have known...
Also, if you watch any review video on the G6, they all call it LG's Flagship Device... Of course a brand can have more than one flagship... Samsung for instance has The Galaxy S line and Galaxy Note... Both are considered flagships.
Cheers!!

I Dono much... But do you guys disabled the beauty mode skin tone and all those gimmicks in front camera option ? Cos after that I see it's little sharp and for the author of this thread.... If you knew and loved pretty well about G6 you should have known that front camera is only 5mp before you buying it. It's not a selfie fone bro

G series is for usual customers and who need executive like needed people
I can't believe this. The selfie camera is nothing special. What a disaster, how could they do this to us? I demand a refund.

You'd demand a refund, because you're not pleased with the front camera? I'd say it takes about five seconds browsing reviews of the G6 to conclude that the front camera isn't exactly top notch. But it's not a manufacturing or quality fault.
I am trying to decide between OP5 and G6 (will be buying in India)
I am holding back on picking up a G6 because of these following reasons, so please through some light on the same
1) Software - I am worried that the software (not being stock or OP5 smooth) may become clumsy and slow the phone one I use it for 5-6 months (similar to samsung ones)
2) Battery life - OP5 has better battery than G6 (?). Also as OP5 keeps the battery cool while charging, it may have better long term battery life. My Nexus 4, Nexus 5 and note 4 battery lives reduced drastically to 1.5 hours SOT after a year, year and a half of use. So this has become a major issue for me.
3) Heat on SD821 - I have to rely on 3G almost all the time and I read in a couple of reviews that the SD821 heats up while constant 3G browsing or CPU intensive tasks rather quickly while no such problems with SD835 (OP5)

Yes, yes and yes.
I bought LG G6 in India a week back and Im not completely sold. Having used OPO and OPT, LG software in something else, you either hate it or you don't.
Except Display and Camera, 1+5 offers much more when compered to LG.

how good is the display difference? and camera (apart from video, I mean still photography) of OP5 is at least on par with G6 right? (at least thats what I understood from the pocketnow's in-depth camera reviews of both devices)
and how is the battery life of G6 compared to your 3T?

Display differences depends on your preferences. I prefer LCD over AMOLED. You may not. But that jello affect gets my OCD going.
Camera difference comes down to processing algorithm done by OEMs. For comparison head over to GSMarena photo compare tool and don't let DXOmark scores fool you.
On the side note, If you have budget of G6, I would advise you to wait for Nokia 8 or buy HTC U11 now.

Well let me tell you my thoughts so far ( Just so that you know where my thoughts are coming from, I am a professional fashion photographer)
1) The design is pretty neat. In the sense, feels great in the hand, the screen to body ratio is good, no buttons on the front which make it look seamless.
2) The display itself is not great. Compared to the other LCD's like iPhone 7, Mi5, Mi6 and few other phones, G6 has the least impressive display. The colors look pale, text is not sharp enough, brightness should have been much much better and the viewing angles are poor, blacks are really poor again and you can see the light leak during the night when the always display is on. ( All this compared to the other standard LCD display phones and not compared to an AMOLED). I will never compare AMOLED displays to LCDs, as they both have their own advantages and disadvantages.
2) The camera is a little tricky here, The wide angle is really fun to use and the photos look like none other. But otherwise, its an okay camera, and definitely not good when it comes to the front camera.
3) Battery is fine, gets you through a day with moderate use.
4) Doesn't heat at least for me, i use it on 4G most of the times.
What i would suggest is, see the phone in person, compare it to other similar price range phones and then take a decision. I also have an S7 edge and i am definitely not as happy as i was with S7E. Thats a better phone IMO. I am not at all a fan of OPO, so cant comment on it. You can even consider the Honor 8 pro, which i saw in person and i think its a pretty solid phone too.
I bought the G6 as i felt there were no other options ( I hadn't see the Honor 8 Pro when i bought the G6 and my S7E was a literal pain in the a** to maintain as it did not have a proper tempered glass and that was the main reason why i decided to move away from samsung)
Edit : One more important reason i bought it was, i found an LG employee who bought the phone on 50% discount and sold it to me for 28K ( He had bought it for 23K). If you can catch hold of some LG employee, then it will be a great deal.
I was using the S8 (USA Sprint version) from late May until about 2 days ago and I've also been in Spain since late May for work. Unfortunately I broke the **** out of my S8 (it scratches, cracks, and or breaks extremely easily without a case) and while I have the Samsung insurance, they don't ship outside of the USA apparently.
Since i'd be in be in Europe for a few more weeks, I decided to pick up the G6 since it was way cheaper than the S8 (at least in Barcelona). I was surprised to see how much more I liked this phone than the S8, I would have never seen myself as getting a LG phone but it was the only other phone with a high display ratio like the S8.. and after I used the high display ratio on the S8 I just couldn't go back (even temporarily).
Anyway, let's talk about the good stuff.
-Display/Design: I like the S8's design a little better (narrower and easily to hold, curved screen looks cooler). LG Display is still great though. As for the design, the metal sides on the G6 feel much better. I also like how the fingerprint scanner is placed on the G6 but moreso how it's also a power button. I don't like how the G6 has the headphone jack on the top, though, but I'm glad it's at least there.
-Software: The S8 was so slow. Even going through Package Disabler and disabling a good amount of the bloatware (and using Nova Launcher Prime) the thing lagged way too much. This drove me nuts. I tried optimizing it as best I could. I got it a little better, but still nowhere near as fluid as I thought such an expensive flagship would be. On the G6 the software is so much quicker. There's much less added bloatware (don't get me wrong, some of the bloatware on the S8 is actually really nice) and everything is much more fluid. It's extremely close to stock Android. On the S8 you click the home button and there's sometimes a delay; I haven't really noticed this with the G6.
-Camera: I took some jaw dropping photos with my S8 -- haven't had much time to try the G6's yet but hopefully it's as good. G6 has dual cameras and wide angle options on the front and back, so there's that.
-Battery: Too early for me to make a judgement on this but I wasn't really happy with the battery I was getting on the S8 (with optimizations). Fast charge is nice and on both.
-SideSync: SideSync is a Samsung only feature that lets you control AND mirror your entire Android device and get all of its notifications on the PC. I was blown the **** away at how well Samsung developed this (it wasn't half assed like some Samsung stuff is). It worked very well connected via both Wifi and USB. It actually saved my life when my LCD died by enabling me to use every aspect of my phone.
-Iris Scanner: It worked really well, but its not practical. You have to hold the phone up and angle it a certain way EVERY TIME you try to unlock using it. It's stupid.
-Fingerprint Scanner: Both devices have really good ones. I think the G6's is slightly better but I could just be perceiving this because it's easier to put your finger on and its bigger).
-Heartbeat sensor: S8 has one, works pretty well (not sure about accuracy but seems accurate). Can't say I really used it much.
My deciding factor on why I prefer the G6 is the software. There's a lot of negative attention on the fingerprint scanner but not so much on how slow the software was. I expect a flagship to have minimal stutter and be pretty fluid. The S8 was a huge disappointment when it came to that despite the several optimizations I made. The S8 has a killer design, great hardware, and some great features (like SideSync), but the software lag is a deal breaker.
Note: I was using a US variant of the S8 with the ****tier processor, but personally I don't believe that the processor difference would be big enough to make it as slow as it was.
Since 2015 when I had purchased the amazing LG G4 where I didn't like the Galaxy S6 (no more Samsung for me) I had strong belief that LG is superior to Samsung in some ways! From these 2 years to present, LG is slowly gaining popularity and momentum due to better UI (LG UI is best imo and also better than boring and simple stock Android) in 2016 LG G5 was really underrated that it defeated flat Galaxy S7 in most aspects where as the LG V20 was better than the Galaxy S7 Edge as well as Galaxy Note 7! Now the more surprising thing is how can a really powerful device running on latest SD 835 with Samsung's software TouchWiz isn't smooth as any LG ! LG G6 with slightly older SD 821 is seriously very well optimised with LG UX 6.0 very smooth and fast just like the One Plus 3T or the Google Pixel. Hats of to LG for the LG G6 for amazing cameras, all round proper optimizations including fantastic battery life lasting whole day etc. Imagine another LG device like the upcoming LG V30 running on SD 835 with LG UX 6.0 and also similar or better than the G6's camera sensor (something better than IMX 258 but LG G6's camera optimization is superior with this sensor and oh that wide angle is crazy) would be the ultimate beast which can be a favorite for years! Galaxy Note 8 would be really boring. LG can do a lot better in sales if all variants of the LG G6 can be bootloader unlocked where as only single SIM international version can be rooted and will have more community support.
Two coworkers of mine got their S8+ a little over a week after I got my G6. One of them just had to get a replacement due to pixels being green all the time even when the screen is off and her boyfriend is having green screen burn in issues.
My G6 has been dropped (Yes I have a case and Tempered Glass Screen Protector) multiple times and it's having no issues at all.
This is how the pixel and pixel XL should have been designed.
This phone is the best device of 2017 only ones that have a chance to beat it are the next Pixels and the OnePlus 5.

It seems to me like the Note 8 is just going to be an S8 with a few upgrades along with the pen and the bloatware thay comes with it. It's disappointing. Samsung did an excellent job with the hardware and design though. I wish they could just make a real international phone compatible with all networks (my European G6 probably won't work on Sprint which wasn't a problem until I realized I want to stay with it). Though I think it's not psosviel.

I read a lot about the production issues but I personally didn't have any manufacturing defects on mine. The phone was just extremely fragile and I disliked every case I tried so I went caseless. Maybe one day we will have phones that are well designed and also durable.
Great write up OP. Samsung did a great job about marketing the hell out of the Infiniti display. And I think most people are seduced by it's display
For me, I didn't want the gimmicky curved screen and wanted a phone that was buttery smooth and didn't lag. After playing with both at the store I went with the LG G6 and couldn't be happier.

There should be more comparison like this. Samsung UI (whatever they call it - Experience or TouchWiz) is lagging regardless the launcher, how strong the CPU is (of course, things get bettet with the stronger CPU).
Samsung should spend some of advertising money on optimizing their UI. I did get frustrated when my S6 Active and S7 Active lagging while surfing on Chrome....

Yes exactly. It wasn't just the TouchWiz launcher as I was using Nova Launcher Prime. There are definitely some serious underlying issues with the software.

S8 is bleeding edge, G6 is cutting edge.
After years with Samsung (Nexus, S4, S5), I waited for Samsung to get back on course for my needs (primarily expandable storage) so I held on to my S5 for as long as I could. This year though, it was time to move on so I explored the S8. The curved screen design did nothing for me, my hands-on experience with it at stores was meh, and the in-depth and real-user reviews gave me some doubts. And the lack of a proper case with included screen cover (i.e. Otterbox Defender) was the proverbial nail on the coffin.
Adding to the comments on a few of the features of the LG G6:
Design/Software I liked the LG G4 when it came out but didn't need a new phone at the time, so I jumped at the chance to get the G6 (US997 unlocked) and I can say I am extremely happy with the phone so far. Still getting used to the way LG does its software thing, but no deal-breakers so far. I am not jumping into customizing it right away, not until I get used to it or annoyed by it, lol. The phone's physical design is extremely comfortable on the hand, even with a case. It fits nicely in the hand and one-handed use is still possible despite the increased screen real estate.
Fingerprint Scanner The scanner works extremely well, at least compared to the slide-your-finger design of the S5 and lot of laptops. I just have to get used to not pressing down on the button. More than once I've unlocked/locked my phone in one fell swoop. The position of the scanner is certainly better on the G6 than the S8, particularly if you use the phone with your left hand. I do wonder if Samsung designers didn't consider left-hand usage.
Camera: I've had excellent results with the G6 camera though I can see what people refer to when they say the camera tends to overprocess the images. The wide-angle lens has come in handy multiple times. The fact you can shoot raw with this phone is something I can't wait to explore as I know it will address the overprocessing issues. Others have recommended using alternative camera apps, so that might be another option.
Battery This is of course anecdotal, but battery life has been excellent so far, lasting all day for my use. It's nice to get home with over 50% of battery life, even with the always on display enabled, various messengers firing off all day, calling, and streaming/playing music from my phone.
SideSync OMG, not having SideSync (or its equivalent) is the one thing I am absolutely struggling with. I use it at work to manage my phone, monitoring alerts, and streaming music from my 128 GB card without having to keep the phone unlocked all the time or wiring up the phone to my computer to control audio. SideSync was a seamless integration of the phone into my computer, just one more app on my screen that I could fully control. All LG tools I've tried are pretty much a joke compared to SideSync.
I have both a LG G6 (quad-DAC version) and a S8+ (Exynos). Got the G6 first and the S8 a couple of days ago. I have had both variants of the G6, with and without DAC and they don't differ in feel or performance. My main findings are these:
Fingerprint scanner: The LG one blows the Sammy out of the water. Not only because of the placement but for function and accuracy too. The obvious flaw with the Sammy is the placement. But that coupled with that you have to place your finger correctly on it instantly does not help. On the LG you can slide your finger over it and when you stop, the scanner reads your finger. The Samsung can not do this. You have to put your finger on it without swiping upon it. It sucks. End of story. It's to narrow too.
Camera: Both phones overprocesses images. Specially sharpness and noise reduction. However S8 has the much cleaner images image quality wise as it has a better sensor than the LG. However the wide angle on the LG is super fun and no other brand has it so it's a big plus for the LG. Photos in the dark specifically looks much better on the S8. In daylight it's pretty much even. LG camera software lags a lot from time to time though. It can sometimes take up to 5 seconds to start the camera and up to 2 seconds shutter delay. Not OK at all. Have not experienced this on the S8.
Software: The S8 is much smoother in scrolling but LG is quicker and has much less lag overall (camera is the exception). But I do get a much smoother experience on the S8 which quite frankly surprised me a lot. The G6 stutters a lot compared to the S8. S8 is stuffed with functions, too much if you ask me but a lot of it is also fun. However I don't miss any of it on the G6. I do miss the pull down notification button in navbar from the G6.
Battery: A little too early for me to tell. But G6 seems to have the better battery life when using full brightness out in broad daylight on mobile data. However inside on WiFi on lower brightness the S8 most likely wins fairly easily.
Display: No secret here that the screen in the S8 is a winner. However whites are a little more white on the G6 and has more "punch" to it. But blacks obviously suffer instead. But it has good blacks for being an LCD. Both screens are very good but S8 has the advantage. G6 screen is sharper because of RGB-matris and not pentile like the Sammy. Even at the same screen size the LG would be sharper.

I just traded my G6 for an S8 (T-mobile JOD), and I pretty much agree with everything you said, except that for me, the G6 was all around a smoother software experience. I COMPLETELY agree about the issues with LG's camera app launching too slowly. That was probably my biggest pet peeve about the device.
I'm happy with my s8, just as I was happy with my G6. Both are great devices.

Just out of curiosity did you have the Exynos version or Snapdragon? The S8+ really has much smoother scrolling for me while it's slower overall. The G6 stutters a lot for me and I mean a lot.

Snapdragon. It isn't because my S8 is bad with stuttering, though (except with animations returning to the home screen). It's just that my G6 didn't stutter much at all with scrolling and had more fluid animations in general.
The strange thing to me is that low end devices offer such a similar experience with regard to smoothness. I was trying out a Nokia 6 the other day and thinking, why am I paying so much for these high-end devices. Okay, screen and camera, but it seems like these things should offer an (almost) perfectly smooth user experience.

I have the Exynos version. There might be differences. GSMArena mentions fairly big performance difference between the Exynos and Snapdragon version in favor of the Exynos. But yes, returning to homescreen often stutters.
I know what you mean. I've had a Lenovo P2 for €30 and its smoothness beats the crap out of both phones. Horrible camera though. But Nexus smooth for the most part.

I bought a G6 coming from a Note 5, first Samsung phone I have owned since the original Galaxy S.
I won't be going back to Samsung anytime soon, the bloat, the lag and the random battery drain 'features' of touchwiz have really soured me. Which is a shame, as build quality and features wise I think Samsung are producing the best Android phones on the market, sadly the software completely destroys the experience.

You should try a factory reset on the G6. It can greatly reduce the scrolling lag , as it did för me.

Yeah, still far from perfect.. But my phone was very laggy at first, and it it did help.
How would you compare it to the S8+?

Hi, I've had my V20 for a couple of years and wondering if the V30 would be a worthwhile upgrade from it? I have been looking at prices and they are relatively cheap compared to a new 2019 phone.
I would only use it with an AOSP rom as I don't like the LG software. Some of the things I don't like about the V20:
-Crappy battery life , never had more than 2-3 sot
-Speaker output is very low
-Gets hotter than hell
-Slow and sluggish even with h custom ROMs
I would get the H932 version as I have T-Mobile. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks
If u find cheap v30 then it's Good cause this phone is still a flagship phone. I have a v20 too just like urs. V30 is best option if u find it cheap
One word:
ABSO-BLOODLY-LUTELY
I just went from a V20 (T-Mobile model, H918) to an AT&T H931 V30, then converted it to the US Cellular US998, stock ROM 20H, rooted with Magisk, no issues so far. I get 9+ hours of SOT per charge and I plug it in once every 48-72 hours for no more than about 45 minutes (I cut the charging at 85% using AccuBattery to alert me when it hits the 85% threshold). If I did fully charge it to 100% I'd probably end up with 11+ hours of SOT - I can't say everyone else can or will or even does get such SOT but I do, and the V30 I have is a 1st production run model purchased by an AT&T employee and she sold it to me recently for a pittance after she upgraded - I got two of them for $100 for both and they both work fantastic (one for me, one for my Wife), both converted to the US998, not one issue so far.
As for my V20, I had two batteries on it so I swapped them once a week. My regular stock ROM rooted with Magisk on that one gave me about 7-8 hours of SOT on a charge, once every 24-48 hours or so. Never cared about the speaker output since I use headphones for listening to whatever but the speaker on my V20 when I had it was louder than the speaker is on my V30, that much I can say for sure.
My V20 never got hot to speak of, and while I did test out some custom ROMs none of them interested me longer than a day or two so stock was where it worked best which is often the case.
The H932 is considered to be the best of the V30 models because it is the only one that has support for Band 71 aka the 600 MHz LTE band. No other V30 has that, and there's no way to add such support in the other models/variants because the radio hardware simply doesn't support it - only the T-Mobile H932 has that Band 71 support natively.
If you're a T-Mobile customer (as I am) it only makes sense to get the H932, but having said that realize if you wish to do custom ROMs like Lineage 16 or whatever that model, the H932, has some very specific requirements and you'll find most every custom ROM out there has an H930 "generic" version and a version for the H932 so be careful if you're experimenting. If you apply any non-H932 specific ROM to your H932, you'll more than likely brick it, but most of the custom ROM threads are rather explicitly clear about what to do.
You just have to READ everything, don't make assumptions 'cause it's an H932 and it works like the rest of the V30 models/variants, and absolutely READ absolutely everything necessary before you even start a flashing process or else you're gonna regret it really fast.
If I could have gotten two H932's for $100 for both sure, I would have been all over it, and I do live in an area that has some Band 71 coverage but I'm good to go so far. We may see an official Android 9 Pie ROM here soon for the US998, or maybe even the H931 AT&T model might get it soon, doesn't matter in the long run since it's still just Android to me. Oreo works just fine, and with 9+ hours of SOT on a charge, I'm very hesitant to screw around with that for fear of doing something that causes it to not last anywhere near that long.
But the V30 is a fantastic piece of hardware, seriously, even today.
I upgraded from lg v20 to v30. I'm Happy I upgraded
I upgraded from LG V20 to V30 several months ago. Couldn't be happier. For me, V30's battery life is much better (despite my old V20 recently having its battery replaced with an original one), no screen ghosting (my old V20's display has been replaced once with the original LCD, and ghosting was still there), easier to grip with one hand, and it's water resistant. Feels snappier too. One thing I'm missing from V20 is the infra red port to use as a remote.
You won't be disappointed in terms of features. One downside though, coming from 19.5:9 device, LG V30 is less comfortable to hold when it comes to one hand operation. Also, I get bluish result in certain lighting condition on camera department. This probably a very spesific issue since others don't seem to experience it.
I previously had a v20 for about 1.5 years. I replaced the thermal paste on it and was already on a Powerbear battery that replaced the OEM battery for it. The thing always ran hot when using Android Auto and I use that all the time. Battery life was decent (4-5 hours SoT) since I flashed custom kernels and configured mods/modules to help with performance. It was still a solid device but I needed to not have it run warm > hot whenever I wanted to multi-task which would then slow the phone down to a crawl.
I went on Swappa and got a Mint condition V30 for around 260 and then purchased a 1 year accidental plan from them. I received the device promptly and it was like night and day. The v30 is ALMOST the perfect phone (imo). We've moved past removable batteries and I can accept that. However, this thing is fantastic. Everything is pretty darn snappy. Whatever I've thrown at it, it's been able to handle with ease.
Day 1 I was able to root with 0 issues and start customizing things thanks to Chazz's guide. After that, I got magisk working and was able to utilize all the modules I wanted without tripping SafetyNet. Shoutouts to the Anxious V30 module btw. That thing is pretty much all you need with the V30.
Then a day ago we found out we could use Edxposed with the v30 and now we have GravityBox working WITHOUT tripping SafetyNet. All while still being snappy and having phenomenal batterylife. I've been getting ridiculous SoT with this thing. I got up to about 10 hours before with regular use. I get around 7-8 hours on average with regular youtube, reddit, discord, web browsing use. This is the first phone without an extended battery where I don't worry about charging when I hit the bed. I'm always confident I have enough juice when I wake up the next day.
It's extremely difficult looking at other newer phones these days because I'd be giving up so many features that I've grown to love because of this phone. I've even got a fully dark theme going!
Pick up a v30 (not from a carrier cause they're gonna charge 800+ for this device when it's not on sale) today and I guarantee you will NOT be disappointed.

It was worth coming to when released in 2017. But even more in 2019 now that DTS 3D stereo framework has been added. If you specifically need the T-mobile branded variant, look for the T-mobile H932 V30+ (128GB). There are a few out there. T-mobile sold them for a limited time before only selling the H932 V30 (64GB).
LG V30/V30+
* 1440P OLED (537 ppi)
* Qi wireless charging
* 3.5mm headset jack
* Quad DAC
* DTS 3D stereo (need root)
* IP68 dust/water resistance
* rear camera OIS on normal lens - plus 120 degree wide angle lens
* superfast fingerprint sensor
* 64GB (V30) or 128GB (V30+) internal storage
* microSD port for additional storage
* bootloader unlock and root
* no notch
* fantastic battery
Be sure to ready this sticky first about rooting. your V30/V30+/V30S. It also covers some information about AOSP/Lineage custom ROMs.
Can anyone comment on the v30's video quality indoors & under low light conditions? The LG G7 is fine with sunlight, but it's hot garbage in low light. Everything is extremely noisy and soft- so virtually unusable.
Compared to the S10 & 7P the G7 is a joke. Anyway, I need a phone to use only as a vid camera. Thinking about buying the ATT931 from a buddy for cheap.

Are you confusing low light (external conditions) with low brightness levels? Because you also refer to sunlight, which is external condition. Why would "low light" room or closet affect a bright OLED display? Unless you're using the crappy "auto brightness". That's the first thing I turn off in LG phones...
As long as you keep the display at decent brightness levels, it's fine. Trying to go to extreme low brightness is not recommended for most OLED displays. Some can handle it, some can't. Pros and cons of OLED vs LCD. Conversely, OLED displays have better contrast and black levels, and better battery usage.
Couldn't say it all better myself. . Thanks to the shout out for both me and @TotallyAnxious! She deserves it more. Also the devs who make the stock based TWRP-flashable zips for us...

Sent via open market LG US998 V30/V30+
Thanks for all of the great input! Just ordered a h932. Can't wait to start modding it once I get it.
I just traded my V30+ in to T-Mobile for half off the G8. I liked the V30 but to be honest I had to go through a lot with the screen issues. I had to exchange it, then test out two more in a store.
It's up to you but the prices are good.
Mine started showing more screen issues (uneven back light increased) and had one tiny black spot on the bottom left area. I couldn't deal. Aside from this, it was really great.

I recommend you to buy the h930 variant bcs it's so easy to root and install custom roms
Also don'y forget the stock camera won't work on custom roms
So if u love custom roms etc... U can buy a one plus 6 or pixel 2 xl but u will lose wireless charging
For me, there are two main advantages V30 had over V20. They are:
1) Better battery life(50%-100% more)
2) Lots of custom ROMs. This makes it possible to keep the V30 for a long time.
I wonder why V30 had so much custom ROMs and V20 does not. Is it because the V30 has the internals of the Pixel 2 XL?

My experience has been just the opposite. I've had 4 LGV30's, still have 2 of them. All have had zero problems with the screens (1 is new the others were used / refurbs).
I think it's worth the extra effort (if needed) to get a V30 yer happy with... the ability to unlock / root, to SOME of us, is a big deal, not everyone.
Just being able to install adaway and avoid being inundated with ad's is a big one for me.
Cheers

I think these 2 phones are the best for casual users... So i recommended him maybe he will like them. But the v30 is the best in term of hard core user especially in the camera, mics, screen, design and the headphone jack without forgetting the huge community behind custom roms

I was referring to the camera, not screen. LG uses smaller sensors than some competitors, which affects camera performance in suboptimal lighting conditions. It has nothing to do with the actual screen, just photography.
Sunlight can cast hard shadows, whereas indoor lighting tends to produce softer ones. Phones like the S10, for example, can capture clear videos/images in low light with little to no noise. The G7 I had performed miserably in this aspect, even tho it can take good pics outside.
Normally, a user would reduce fps and res in poor areas. This will usually compensate for the lack of light and reduce noise, along with tweaks to iso and shutter.
