Pink tint with HDR+ (Google Camera) - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

I am on Xenon HD 7.1 and using the Google camera port with hdr+, photos end up having a pink tint. This is probably caused because I have omnivision camera and it's related to custom ROMs not having the latest camera blobs. For example, if I were to use the camera on latest MIUI with latest blobs hdr+ would probably work fine. Is there no workaround to make it work on custom rom?
The pics already look solid with gcamera alone but hdr+ would make them even better

Nah... The pink tint even there on new MIUI, so I think its not just the blobs... RAW output is broken.

Even with sensors =/= Omnivision?

Yeah im on MIUI 9 and I still get the pink tint when i try hdr+. Even back in MIUI 8 i also get the pink tint so unless they release a fix for omnivision we're probably gonna still have that problem

nope... sony and samsung works well
bugs only on omnivision sensor... try open camera, vf 5, freedcam, whatever apps you use to take RAW picture, you will get the pink picture.
I've submit this bugs 2 months ago : http://en.miui.com/thread-746046-1-1.html
looks like they didn't care or it's unfixable by them...

Selective focus?

I went from S7 Edge to N8 under the impression that the camera, and especially the 'live focus' option, would be improved. However, I'm very dissapointed so far and I miss 'selective focus' from the S7.
Any chance of bringing 'selective focus' to the N8? :fingers-crossed: I believe the S8 has it?
I also miss the N7 and S7 selective focus.. hopefully itll be back as a download or update to the camera app. Downloaded an old apk of he selective focus part of the camera but it doesnt work.. Shot and more doesnt work either (i liked he removal and dramatic shot modes :/) dual shot and surround shot work though
While I love the Dual camera and the live Focus, I do wish they would have left the selective focus in the camera app. There was a time or two so far I wanted to use it

It's still available in the front camera modes, just not the rear.. Live focus is nice when it works but again.. no pan focus (the lens is f 1.9, theres plenty of blur already)

In my experience the only time Live focus doesn't make the subject in focus kind of grainy/low res is in broad daylight. That wasn't the case with SF. Hopefully someone will bring it back
Yes, I'm talking about in the rear camera. Does me no good on the front camera

If its possible to port the N7/S8 camera app and have it run as a separate app from the system camera then it might be possible to have both live focus and selective. (And get shot and more back too?)

I have got Note 8 on 21 Sept India. While going through camera i found out that Selective Focus option is missing in camera. Is there any to get it. Live Focus does not make blur front and focus on back

Best ROM for Camera quality?

Hey guys, I just ordered the phone today and it'll be arriving in not more than a month or so.
I'm curious if Camera quality really is different depending on the ROM because of the libs, framework or IDK, enlighten me.
Question is in the title anyway, thank you!
Google camera HDR+ app on nougat roms. Pretty good HDR pics and great in low light.
someone took the app from google phones and made it usable with phones with snapdragon 820
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-hdr-ported/
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-hdr-customization-raw-support/
Heyyo, eh camera quality is kinda subjective... For me? I do prefer Nougat ROMs with the modified google camera as mentioned before.
There is one downside to Nougat ROMs though and that's the camera flash... Sadly the way LeEco implemented the flash via I2C doesn't work well with current nougat ROMs thus it isn't perfectly synched with the camera. So for dark photos with flash? Marshmallow ROMs are still better in that condition. I rarely take photos with flash so I'm not too concerned but just gonna mention it so you know too

I prefer the marshmallow baseds like smalleui because you can use HDR on front camera (makes a big difference at night).

Here's a bunch of photos I took with the Google camera mod with HDR+ set to auto as it tends to work best on auto for a balanced shutter speed and quality.
https://goo.gl/photos/zsxYdUGLJGbkBRD28
So yeah, thus far Nougat with the modded google camera works darn good.
Here's the version of it I'm using
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120756004
Like I mentioned previously the only downside to Nougat camera quality is flash synchronization. It's not perfect as LeEco uses I2C and thus far the community developers sadly have not been able to mimic it in custom Nougat ROMs... Sadly LeEco will probably never release the source code for it...
If flash synchronization is extremely important to you? That would be the only reason I'd stick with a Marshmallow ROM.

The EUI versions still have a much superior focus but GCam has a incredible better quality on night photos. I swap betwen EUI and RR Nougat from time to time to test new versions for GCam.
Also on Nougat you can enable EIS on all cam apps

Do we have that on Official/Marshmallow based Custom ROMs? And do you have some apps that simulate [email protected] FPS?
AFAIK, no rom has 60 fps with 1080p, even the official MM roms.
In fact, I don't think you can record 60 fps in any resolution, even 720p and below. You do have slow-mo [email protected], looks a bit pixelated though.
P.S.: 4k and 1080p might have artefacts in official roms, noticed that when I got mine a week ago. It's a case of low video bitrate, if you bump up the bitrate (with 3rd party apps)- you can go all the way up to 100mb/s - there's no artefacts.

On the official MM roms, if you pointed the camera at the sky you could notice a lot of artefacts from the compression (low bitrate, around 20 mb/s). Bumping it up to 30 or 40 removed the artifacts

Stock cam vs. Gcam (AOSP/RR)

Greetings.
I would like to try some custom roms, especially because of the camera and battery life. Unfortunately I cannot find any comparison between stock & custom roms on these two issues.
Please, can anybody post some screenshots or experiences?

When I tried out aosp and resurrection remix I noticed a drop in camera quality, and loss of image stabilization. I tried different camera apps but none were as good as the stock one. The good thing is that the lineage beta now has the stock sony camera (thanks to modpunk).

Probably not. Sony disabled RAW image support which is needed for Google Camera HDR processing. I tried all GCam ports and all of them are crashing because of that.

I made a post on r/sonyxperia about my experience on russel5's AOSP extended ROM. I can't post the links on xda yet but if you go on that subreddit and search AOSP xz1c you will find it. There is also a link to a photo album in a comment reply so you can see some sample shots.
In short the camera is far better thanks to the working gcam mod and the battery remains almost the same, perhaps slightly better on stock.

@rkf10
I struggle to get an unblurred shot in gcam on AEX. The rom is excellent, except for my photos using gcam.
I come from a dying stock z5c that just took unblurred photos on auto.
I bought this XZ1C new, backed up DRM, unlocked then flashed this ROM, without thinking to try camera first, doh.
Any suggestions on how to get best shots with gcam?

My experience with the XZ1 compact is that it's really slow to focus, the slowest of any Sony mobile I've ever owned. Forget the PR blurb about laser focus, you need to hold it still for at least three seconds before pressing the shutter. Also try pressing the screen to take the picture rather than the camera button, sometimes the action of pressing the button adds to the blur.
For best results put it in a tripod and use a bluetooth shutter release or put it on self timer, the difference in quality is noticeable.
I haven't tried the GCAM mod from Russle, but I think general consensus is that using manual settings on the stock camera outperforms any third party apps, so if pictures is your priority, then flash a stock rom and use janjan's modded kernel to fix the camera.

I found I get the best shots when I open the camera app and let it autofocus itself. For me it usually focuses well (only struggling sometimes in low light). However once I start tapping on the viewfinder, I find it almost locks itself in an unfocused state. Closing (not killing) and reopening the app usually refocuses the image straight away. It's not ideal but I get much better results than stock this way, especially in high dynamic range environments which I guess makes sense.
I went through the trouble of setting up AEX and have to agree that the GCam ports I tried, while fully working, do not produce good results. With default settings the shots are grainy and full of color noise. Focus hunts so slowly that the only shots I got in focus were mostly accidental. I went in and played with all the settings but nothing really helped. I'm comparing the results to my Galaxy S8 running a GCam port with phenomenal results using default settings. It's odd because the DNG files side-by-side look very similar so I have no idea why the computational secret sauce isn't working.
I considered using AEX as a daily driver just for the novelty of having an Xperia device with full RAW support but found it slow/unresponsive compared to LOS so I've switched back.

Best Gcam mod for Mi A3 so far?

The last post I found about this was from september, so can anyone tell me what's the best gcam mod so far?
in both terms of image quality and adaptation (being able to use frontal camera would be a pleasure)
I am using this:
https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/cfiles/gcm1/PMGC_7.0.009_Astrophotography_Version_V7.apk
I´ve tested 4 or 5 gcam mods so far, but really, the differences are very small. Most of them denoise the pictures too much, I prefer the more grainy pictures from the stock cam, they are showing more details in most of the pictures I´ve taken, in daylight and in low light situations.

It's kinda sad to hear that. Do you remember any mod with not much denoise effect?
I think it is a good thing. So I don´t have to switch between two Cam Apps. Its all personal preference. If one likes the smooth, degrained and denoised pictures because they´re "looking better" on a small display, go ahead.
If it comes to details, white balance and which one is closer to what I see with my eyes, stock cam wins 9 out of 10 times - in MY eyes.
+1, tried a bunch of gcam mods and in the end dumped them all. I was not happy with post-processing and heavy details reduction. Probably ok for Instagram.
My only complaint about the stock cam is inconvenient UI especially in Pro mode.

Hi everyone!
I just got my A3. Any progress on GCam vs Stock? There are SO many GCams..
Thanks!
I tried all that worked with the Mi A3 (upto v 7.3) but still preferred the stock cam. Yes, the UI for Pro sucks.
Gcam files are larger than stock and stock cam colours are realistic compared to gcam.

Question Low-quality or blurry front camera

Hi, I notice that whenever I use my front camera, especially on messager. the quality is so low or blurry. Is anyone experiencing this?
Me too its even worse than my old oneplus 6 , I'm very disappointed
Same, I don't know why the GT 2 Pro has a really bad front cam. My old Xiaomi Mi 9T can do better do. The front cam of the GT 2 Pro has a very smudgy look which I don't know if it's because of the software or something else.
I recently got the phone and notice this too when taking pictures of items with lettering. It is not as sharp. My old Huawei P10 was better.
Is there anything to do about this? Would installing GCam improve this?

Free you can use open camera, it supports 4k on front camera and has camera2api support, and some gamma curves that helps a lot. But if you want amazing quality you can get mcpro24fps that supports 4k, 10bit color depth, HDR HGL profile recording, lots of gamma curves and gamuts, you can get front camera footage out of it that will make anyone think you using a professional camera if you know how to use them properly. Other option is motioncam pro that records full RAW DNG frames witch is crazy hi quality but very hard to use and extremely heavy to deal with. So my recommendation is mcpro24fps, and for photos gcam off course. If you don't use gcam in any android device you just crazy.
This video is from the front camera with mcpro24fps:
I can take a shot on full blow clear sky and sun tomorrow if you want to see the great dinamic range you can get

If the app is crashing enter the settings via long click on app icon and change the Device Interface for all lenses. E.g. to "Pixel 2 XL (Taimen)".

Yeah, try doing the same in the stock camera , you gonna look like a nuclear bomb exploded, I really never even bother opening the stock camera app, it makes me mad to see a good sensor wasted with this Realme software. Just the fact that front camera is capped at 1080 for no reason drives me crazy already.
I think the app is worth every penny. The developers are also amazing, just a while ago there was no support for 10bit HDR on the app for the gt2 pro, I asked about it on the official app telegram group and in one week they added support
