The Google Camera Ports with HDR+ are out for a while now. Lately they got more attention because of HDR+, Portrait Mode and even versions for Samsungs Phones with Exynos.
Now since the U Ultra shares most of the relevant components with the Google Pixel (same SoC, same Sensor but with OIS) i would have expected that most of the stuff works.
But for me it doesn't. Let's discuss configurations and experiences so far with the u ultra and the ports:
Download Collection
Modders: Arnova, BSG, Ivanich
In generell compared to the original port Camera NX from Charles_I all those other ports have more configurations but are much more buggy and slower. But in some configurations it's ok, and some amazing hdr+ pictures are possible.
Especially in low light. Compared to the good old Nexus 6p everything looks a bit more washed out but less grainy. thanks to the OIS 10 i found an app which has working portrait mode even on hour device:
Download
Settings
Model: Nexus 6
Use Config only Nexus6HdrPlusAuto - enabled
Portrait Mode on on all models- enabled
Not working:
Portriat Mode with Front Cam
Hdr+ with Front Cam
Well for some weeks i am also testing different versions and here is my experience:
1. Arnova's builds give much better image than everything else i have tested.
2. Most stable build that i currently use is Arnova's GCam5.1.018-Arnova8G2-V1.2
3. I use following settings:
config camera hdr+ - pixel 2016 zsl hdr or pixel experimental features
model - pixel xl(corr)
hdr+ parameters - default
in advanced i set jpeg quality to 100%, activate hdr+ control and activate ZSL
This way it works good but still occasionally crashes. Newer arnova versions work very unstable for me (including 1.5)
Thanks for sharing~?
I also tried again to play with arnova's 1.5 and 1.6 versions but could not make it work stable enough. I needed ti use very different configuration with these builds - nexus 6 auto was the only working config for hdr+ (other give black screen). ZSL is not working also with this config. As a whole application looks more stable but at some point it just stops working. It show picture and focuses but just does not save anything. I am going back to 1.3.
I am suggest gcam this version off MGC_5.1.018.177470874.41362666__A7.0-8.1_MI5S_v2e and it's great working.
B-S-G Mod Settings:
Model: Pixel 2XL (Taimen) for smoother images; Nexus 6P (Huawei) for more detailed photos.
Use "config Nexus6 Hdr+Auto": turn on if the app crashes when taking pictures (better compatibility). Nexus6 Hdr+Auto NoZsl or Nexus 6P or Pixel 2017 Zsl Hdr
HDR+ parameters: "Default" or higher settings. Medium for a balance between all options.
Manual fixed black level offset:set to 64 for fix pink tint
Adance setting

thanks! Finally there seem to be some versions with working HDR+ on the front cam. now you finally can see that its a 16mp sensor. the difference is like night and day. unfortunatelly i haven't found a version with working HDR+ on the front Cam AND working portrait mode. with your settings the portrait mode stays black, on both cams.
You must not set config hdr+ parameter first.
Step setting
1.choose model>Pixel2XL/Pixel2
2.HDR+ parameters: "Default" or higher settings. Medium for a balance between all options.
Manual fixed black level offset:set to 64 for fix pink tint
Adance setting
HDR+ control:enable
Portrait mode on all models:enable >close app
3.you must open app again for setting config camera
Use "config Nexus6 Hdr+Auto": turn on if the app crashes when taking pictures (better compatibility). Nexus6 Hdr+Auto NoZsl or Nexus 6P or Pixel 2017 Zsl Hdr>finish
Hmm, followed your steps. But no chance. Portrait mode doesn't work.
Good news!
With this apk everything seems to be working.
HDR+ on both cameras and portrait mode on both cameras. but everything is pretty laggy. i think this won't change till android 8.
For me arnova's v1.3 still gives best image quality. By disabling battery optimizations for the app crashes are significantly reduced.

I don't have Oreo yet, i will test in some weeks (months?) when it comes to europe. But I would try this one: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/...amera-Pixel2Mod-Arnova8G2-V7beta-test-6_1.apk
Arnova is optimizing it also for the HTC 10 with Oreo so i would keep an i on its development.
Would be nice if you reported back how it is on your Oreo phone? Did the processing speed increase? Is it more stable in low light? Is the viewfinder still laggy as hell?

There are a few contenders for best smartphone camera of 2017, and many would argue that the Google Pixel 2 & 2 XL were the best mobile shooters. That's thanks in large part to the phone's exceptional combination of camera hardware with Google's prowess in image processing software as seen by their famous HDR+ technology.*
Ports of Google Camera with the HDR+ technology have been shown to dramatically improve the picture quality of budget phones like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and flagship phones like the Essential Phone. The Pixel 2 camera experience is largely an iterative improvement over the first generation Pixel, though it adds some polish with features such as Motion Photos, Face Retouching, and lastly Portrait Mode.{From xda developers}
Both front and back camera portrait mode works.
There are tons of apps out and i'm not the Developer of this app, i just found out this app and which one supports the best on the phone and thought maybe i should share this link*below.*
sometimes the camera app crashes because of incorrect settings so ill put my settings which works for me*best.*
BEST SETTINGS
GO TO CAMERA SETTINGS>>
Tuning back cam>>Pixel XL
Tuning front cam>>Nexus 5X
Back cam photo resolution>>6.0 MP
Front cam photo resolution>>5.0 MP
Advance>>HDR+parameter>>very low
config camera HDR+>>Pixel 2017
Lens blur MP>>12 MPUsing the app in as much lower parameter of settings is always better and your app will work smoothly ( in lower settings)
Download*: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mnMyFHRXhc5eWFrBMtlMyn__YulO20Z6/view?usp=sharing
IMPORTANT: It is important to clear the Ram Before, every time you open the app because the app needs lots of memory
If app crashes then Clear Data Force Stop then open again then Update Settings
OTHER APPS (Root user only): HIGHLY RECOMMEND
*These app force Stop the unwanted background apps which are running in background also clears the phone memory to significant Max limit.
1.Root Booster: "Use In Speed Boost mode" Link:https://drive.google.com/file/d/1N9tw9wLjeUhBPeFOWPkbZL8d7ehSlI5W/view?usp=drivesdk
2. Speed Up Swap:"Use In Very High" Link:https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YnJ_Wku5NU2xcqzTihYfGnQuWpi59MH0/view?usp=drivesdk
using this app drastically increased the performance of the Google Camera app
And Also I'm using Noble Nought S8 port 5.1 AlexisXda (This Rom allows to change the screen resolution, i use the app in 1280x720 resolution uses less memory whereas the default s6 resolution is 1440x2560 uses lots of memory)
take that for whatever its worth.
Although i think it should work just fine on any rom because its the hardware which matters
Gonna try it thank you...[emoji4]

I found Urnyx05's latest version runs well without issues. As well as Arnova but requires to switch the Mod in order to make the slow motion work.
But switching camera lenses is missing in both versions. Also timelapse does not run of 4k mode in Urnyx05.

I noticed a big difference between google camera and the stock camera in terms of landscape views, google camera does a lot better(especially after turning on Lib patcher settings). But for individual objects it seems the stock camera does better in terms of exposure. I think I will depend on google cam just for landscape photos and raw images.
One thing I also found today, when I record with Slow Motion in google cam.. the video will not work.
I haven't found any that adequately support the phone's cameras.
Waiting in vain for astrophotography support with more than 3sec shutter speed.
This device doesn't even have a full PRO camera mode that can adjust shutter speed.
got it on my stock build A71. Photo's are good, but can't do widescreen. Videos are ok, seams quicker on videos, less time "catching up " with what's on the screen . will test outside later, no AR as well , but stable.
we need a port that can use the fullest of the cameras, ex: 64mp, this way we can take raw pictures and have more control

I'm not sure samsung allows full access to the camera for 3rd party apps in the A71. For example I can't get 60 or more fps in any 3rd party app regardless of the resolution, including filmic pro. Only 30 and 24 fps is possible. Real shame...

Yeah I noticed that too, This phone cameras are really good, nothing to complain, just the stock camera app that It's too limited, the phone support camera2api but the stock app doesn't let us tweak our photos in a professional way, there's that "Pro" mode in the app but it's nothing near the real capabilities of Camera2Api with raw photos and so on.
I read in Arnova's article in Google Camera port that there is a module for magisk to enable all the cameras of the phone. Anyone tried it ?
Also I would confirm that there are still issues with the slow motion recorder, the video will be lagging.
I have just checked the last update of Urnyx 7.3.0.018and added the config file of Samsung A71 and it actually works very well! even switching Auxiliary Camera works. But there are two things are still missing:
1-It seems it swithces to the wide camera only (12mp) for both 0.6x and 2x, so 64mp and micro are not added.
2-Slow motion mode still lagging.
I think we should work on making a specific version or configs for A71 which enables the rest of Cameras.
[UPDATE]
Using Arnova Gcam, lastest version. I was able to switch the camera lens between 12mp (wide) and 16mp(main). The other lenses keep crashing the app.
This was done by setting ID Camera 0 and ID Camera 2 in the Mod settings. Maybe by the magisc module it may work, yet my phone is not rooted.

We have a new system update that enables some of the pro mode functions. However, when changing the shutter speed the stock camera always fails...
And some changes when doing an astrophotography shot with the gcam before the update there is less than 3 sec shutter speed. Now i can get 14 sec. But the photo still dark and awful.

By editing the options you can export a config file. For example in Arnova's version, there is a mod option which gives you extra optiions that you set and then export a config file, I don't know much but I think for our case we need deeper changes in the port. We might need to edit the port files.

Yes but that's not enough, I personally aim for 64mp camera and if we are able to take RAW images with that will be a nice thing. We have a good camera in this phone but it is diappointing Samsung did not provide Raw Images option in the new update.

For now I have no plans, it is still risky as long as there is little support for the phone in the forum. But I would love to get deeper in helping to improve a better port of GCam for the phone.
Is anyone elses viewfinder laggy? The preview image?
I'm currently testing a Google Camera port on the ASUS ROG Phone 3. I am using GCam_7.3.018_Urnyx05-v2.0_Wichaya_snapcam_V2.2 by Wichaya. Here are my observations so far with respect to compatibility:
id 0 = main camera 16 mp
id 1 = front camera 24 mp
id 2 = ultra wide camera 13 mp
id 3 = macro camera 5 mp
id 4 = main camera 64 mp raw
Observations:
All 4 lenses work, including the two rear auxiliary cameras (wide-angle and macro.) You have to go to Settings > Advanced > Auxiliary camera and enable them there.
64MP unbinned images can be captured, it's ID4. Aggressive denoising seems to remove a lot of detail. Play with the Luma denoise and Chroma denoise values in Settings > Advanced > Lib patcher.
HDR+ enhanced works with 64MP capture.
Max video recording is 4K60. 8K30 not available.
Slow motion crashes, so no 4K120 available.
Current issues:
No distortion correction for the wide-angle camera
Selfies are always 24MP, no pixel binning
I will get camera samples at a later date.
Thanks to Wichaya for their assistance!

Hey guys. Just checking in to see how the gcam is going for this device, is it a great improvement over the stock cam?
any working gcam ports??....mine force closing whenever i launched it luckily im not a camera enthusiast but having a working gcam port is assuring though....gonna have to wait few month more i assume
Gcam works good on rog
Using Posted GCam, and its definitely better than stock, but i do get issues with focus on GCam, it hunts. I expected the cam to be better on rog3, vs rog2, buts its not. ASUS needs to invest more time on its cams. They are pretty bad.
but then again.. this is a gaming phone. and they are investing more on the gaming features

The cam is not that bad. I had no bad shot with this phone, it sure is less good than the note 10 + of my wife but nothing wrong with the cam while using Asus cam app. Can't say that about GCam that is even after modding it, optimized to use with Pixel phone.
More samples
Here are some more samples from stock cam and gcam. The stock cam pics are the ones on the left and top.
The stock camera app of Nord 2 is ****. It over processes the images and the photos don't look like they are taken from a 50MP camera.
Any suggestions on what to do or some good GCam you can suggest?
Some examples? High mp sensors suffer in low light and have a more shallow depth of field especially up close to subjects. An accurate AF lock is important because of the narrow DOF; example, always try to get a AF lock on the subject's closest eye when shooting a face.
Adjust your shooting style according to the camera's strengths and weaknesses. See as the camera sees not as your eyes see. Human vision has exponentially more processing power and an incredible imaging system more so than any camera.
I want a proper gcam version if available or any better alternative that stock.
Always disable HDR option and pictures will look a lot better (sadly the app doesn't remember this setting so you have to turn it off each time) . The HDR process in the Nord 2 is absolutely awful .
Download the first file in this link. Photos taken with the primary camera will be much better, though I don't think Night Sight works. https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-wichaya/f/dl5/
DISABLE HDR. It's a known issue.
But you can't disable HDR when taking photos directly in other apps (whatsapp, telegram, etc)? I had OP8T and it had same issue and I had returned it...
GCam won't give you 50MP. AFAIK the only way to get 50MP on stock Nord 2 is by using the Extra HD feature in the stock camera app.
I'm curious to know if people with rooted devices have this capability enabled in the API. Let us know please

50Mpx is available in some GCAm versions (Wichaya and Nikita if I remember correctly, BSG and Greatness don't have the full resolution option) , but the 50mpx full resolution of the sensor is totally useless (not only with the nord 2 , but generaly with all other phones) , 12mpx pixel bining gives you better image processing, less noise , etc... a quick look at the reviews explain very clearly why is not a good idea to use the full resolution (50, 108mpx etc...) of a phone sensor.
Personally I use the BSG 8.4 v10 version and pictures are great, Google HDR+ implementation give a lot better results than stock app

Was this on stock or rooted? Btw for me the 4:1 binning is not something desirable since I stack very low light photos, run my own denoising and various other process. Hence why I need the full sensor data made available to apps like OpenCamera

I don't think HDR and other processing options are enabled for 3rd party apps (same goes for the ultrawide lens, you can't use it in other apps) for me whatsapp and telegram pictures look good (but they are heavily compressed)

Yes, IM apps do compress photos but that's different story than colour fidelity. In my time with 8T the colours in photo app and telegram/whatsapp were simply blown out of proportion: something normal-red in real life was glowing like burning Mars in 8T photos. After disabling HDR in camera app the photos looked ok (though still overprocessed hence IMHO OP3 photos looked better!) but in whatsapp/telegram I still had same issue with stupid extreme colours...
