V30 vs. Note 8 (A current V30 user) - LG V30 Questions & Answers

Hey All,
Firstly, thanks in advance for the wisdom, advice, and support.
I need some advice. I am a historic Galaxy Note user - from the Note 2 through the Note 5, I've had and loved them all. I recently switched to the V30 last week after my Note 5 just wasn't making it anymore. The V30 appealed to me as a multimedia powerhouse with the unique 10 bit camera, cine log, etc. (I create multimedia - video/photos/social media on the daily for my job - the have since given me a iPhone 7+, but I still prefer creating on my android). The Note 8 appeals because it seems to be more comforting considering my history, is a powerhouse as well in so many ways, and a telephoto lens, among other things.
After returning my first Verizon V30 for terrible screen banding, I got another one that has a pretty good screen with the exception of brightness uniformity issues and crushed blacks in low light. I've read, watched, and researched as much as I can, and I can't decide what to do. I'd love your input and advice on what to do. Here's my pro/con list in no particular order:
V30:
+ DAC
+ Cine Log
+ Size in hand
+ $200 card + daydream VR
- Screen in low light (uniformity + crushed blacks)
- Wide angle cam

Note 8:

I am not sure what exactly you are asking....
I can tell you that I had the Note 8 for 2 weeks and took it back. It's BIG. HEAVY and I didn't use the S-Pen after the first couple of days. The Camera was phenomenal. I returned it and used a flip phone for two days, then bought the V30 on release day at AT&T. I did it that way so I could return it for the Note 8 if I didn't like it.
So far, so good. My screen is good. The brightness is weird, sometimes it seems brighter than others, but as of yet it has not been a big deal. It is NOWHERE near as bright as the Note 8, but no phone is. I do miss that about the 8. I do not miss the zoom lens. It was a gimmick. It helped some with macro photos, but the digital zoom on the V30 is AMAZING.
Battery life is about the same, and the LG charges faster then the Note. The LG fits in pockets better and seems right in my hand, whereas the Note seemed way too long. You really notice that the LG is nearly 40 grams lighter, but it does not feel cheap. Also, the manual mode on the LG Camera is so much better than the Note. It has much better tactile control on it's slider. That makes all the difference in the world. And the sound, whether through a cord or bluetooth is MUCH better in my car!
I have until Thursday to make up my mind about trading, but I think I'm going to be very happy with the LG.

the note 8 is better. smoother has bettet screen , feel more premium. owning both right now the note 8 is going back and is just because of how tall and heavy it is. the v30 is just much more comfortbale devices. Botj phone are awesome.

I was debating between those two also and had to go with v30 I've owned note phones before but never used the spen but cant deny note8 looks beautiful but I'm a music guys and prefer the camera set up of the v30 and so far no issue with the v30 screen loving it

If the op is concern about size then the v30 is the right choice. I am also a note user, dating back from the original phablet note. The note 8 feels Right at home, if anything the note 8 is actually easier to hold vs note 5 and back. Starting with the note 7 which was quiet nice to hold also. I suggest the op go play with the note 8. If the v30 screen is not your cup of tea, the note 8 has the best screen right now.

unlike android pay. samsung pay work anywhere u are able to swipe ur card, even if it doesnt take electronic payment. it sents a magnetic signal to the credit swipe machine just like if u are physically swiping ur credit/debit card register in the app. works 100% of the time. unlike other electronic payment like apple or android pay.

I have the Note 8 but have tested out the V30 as well.

-6 GB RAM helps with app management
-Better looking UI. Though both can be themed.
-Feels more substantial
-Conventional power button placement
-Headphone jack on the bottom instead of top

phone still super cool doesnt matter what u do. note 8 doesnt get has hot like s8. but cannot compare to the v30 coolness
i had both but decided to keep the v30 just because the hifi dac, wide angle lens, the size which is 100% more comfortable and 6" of usuable screen. hated the curve screen.

For me the Note 8 was just too heavy. The curved screen registered way too many accidental touches. I don't use the S-Pen on my Note 3, so I doubt I'd use it on the Note 8. The screen on the V30 is bright bright enough for me. The camera is fine. The audio quality with headphones is amazing on the V30 too.
Overall, for me, the V30 worked out great. Now to get my first VR headset. They said I'm approved for the promotion and it'll be here in 6-8 weeks. Two year warranty was a nice added bonus as well.

I just got home from work. I have the note 8 since Friday so basically 2 days. I love the phone except that it's too big and heavy like you said. If if was 6 inches itwp ups be the perfect device. But damn it's so big. So now I'm thinking about returning it and grabbing either an S8, V30 or Z2 even.

Check out the V30. It's a great phone. Body to screen ratio is awesome. The face detection works great. Battery life is great. A huge improvement over my Nexus 6p.

I had the Note 8 (unlocked US version) and then bought the V30...after about 3 days with the V30 I sold the Note 8.

Yes, my wife has the S8 and I had the S8+. I prefer the V30 or Pixel 2 XL over them. I just love the aspect ration of the V30 so much more and it feels like the perfect size phone to me. Just wish I could get rid of some of the random lag and have it snappy like the Pixel

Complaints/Praises so far?

I've had my phone for two days so far. After spending six months on a Galaxy S6 parts of me are very happy to be home with the Nexus line again.. mainly pure Android and the development sure to come. However, I've noticed two things so far with which I'm not terribly happy.
First, those bezels. Christ, there has to be damn near 1 1/2 inches of bezel on this phone. I thought phones were moving towards a smaller and smaller bezel these days. Apparently Google and Huawei didn't get the memo.
Second, no matter how much they tried to sell it, the camera is just not anywhere near the level of (at least) Samsung's. This camera doesn't even belong in the same sentence as the word Samsung. It doesn't have the ability to snap a clear shot of anything moving, even of my small dog walking. Any motion equals blurry pics. The camera is actually why I tried the S6. It's also why I loved it. Of course, I hated just about everything else on the S6 (even the international unlocked version I bought).
I guess we'll see whether the camera, which is the most important part of the phone for me (kids, animals) ends up being bad enough to seek another phone with a better one.
Your thoughts after using it for a few days?

Don't have mine yet. (Thanks huawei) but hopefully some Google updates can make this a better experience for you. I know the nexus 5 had some updates that improved the camera a bit.

Is this problem with moving subjects with hdr on?
Because if I'm not mistaken, Google camera has some cool but heavy post processing on photos taken with hdr+ and even the capture itself seems a bit slow at times.
This on my Nexus 5 and from what I've seen in videos it's the same pretty much with the 6p. It gives awesome results once you learn how to use it, I've taken some epic shots with my N5 and the camera is crappy.
Just don't use it for moving scenes.

Yeah, definitely check HDR is off for motion. That and lots of light. Even with the bigger pixel size, these camera sensors are tiny and have no chance with motion in low light.
I'm actually curious about more opinions on this. I just listed my Note 5 because I had a Nexus 5 before and I want to go back to Nexus with the 6P. The camera doesn't matter that much to me because I use a DSLR for any pictures I actually care about. I'm sure it's still a massive improvement over the Nexus 5 camera I had for years, hah.

Got one today. My impression is by far best nexus phone. Only thing i wish thr power button was more stiff its too light.

That's kind of how I feel. The Note 5 is very likely the best phone on the market right now, but it's still not a Nexus. And while I like the Exynos hardware, you're stuck with the lack of software. I feel like the screen is by far the best part of the Note though, so I was quite surprised to hear the same screen on the 6P or else I might have waited in the first place.

I'm in love with mine. Just arrived today. Screen is beautiful. Signal/radio is far superior to Samsung....even better than my Busted G3, and I haven't had service this good since I used HTC. Size is bigger than I would have liked. But I knew it was big going in. G3 was about my limit...and this is a tad larger. I'll get used to it. Love the bigger screen but it's just a tad to big for one hand all the time. Fingerprint sensor is flawless for me. Camera seems fine so far for me, but my complaint is the higher resolution photos are only 4:3, not 16:9. Battery life will take a few days to test. I thought I might have to root and rom because I hate the menu set up on my Nexus 7 (2013) but this is ok for me. No complaints.
BTW to the OP...the top and bottom bezels are for the speakers. No bottom speaker, than I would bet smaller bezel.

The Note 5 certainly does have the best hardware. As for the best phone that is subjective. The nexus P is certainly a great contender and at it's price point it is a superior device. No, it isn't the "best" in every category. Neither is the Note 5 or any device for that matter. All depends on what you're looking for. If you don't care about updates, development and the issues that plague samsung phones (memory management for one) then by all means get one. It is a solid device. One of the best out there.
What kept me from buying Samsung is development sucks for them, they lock down devices on the two best carriers in the USA and I'm tired of the Touchwiz bloat. Oh and its almost twice the price. If those were not true I'd gladly give Samsung my money again.
The Nexus P is a very well built device with a display that is very close to the Note 5, a very good camera, great battery life, excellent performance and you are guaranteed to have excellent development here and updates from Google.
Pick which one is more important to you.

I'm the same as the OP in the sense I came to the 6p after 6 frustrating months with the s6.
The screen, camera size and design of the s6 is pretty amazing. Excellent in all regards. But the software... Awful. Multitasking was impossible and touchwiz just annoyed me.
The 6p software is pure and fast. Excellent.
But I agree the camera and screen aren't in the same league as the s6 really.

exactly, the note5 is a great phone however if you want stock, are sick of waiting for updates, AND are stuck with one that can't be rooted depending on your carrier you'll move to the 6p like i did.

If you guys got a good pair of headphones then you'll notice the quality of the stock tuning is amazing. Wow in impressed from stock. Not bad google not bad

Also coming from an S6..
The S6 screen, form factor and stock e-mail app (Exchange still sucks on Gmail) are the only things I'll miss (Maybe the Camera but I really haven't used the 6P Camera much to make that judgement).
The positives though outweigh the negatives.. much stronger latch on to wifi and mobile signal compared to the S6. Places where I would drop out of wifi completly on the s6 still give me 3-4 bars on the 6p. Software.. so much smoother than touchwiz (I'd forgotten how buttery stock android really is). Everything about the device feels faster as a result of the software even though specs wise the S6 out-guns the 6p. Battery life is awesome compared to the S6 - no more mid-day charge required.
I still dream of another Samsung Nexus...

The only bother I have is the screen has a rainbow reflection and I can't read it in my car or in the sun

The only thing that's bugging the hell out of me is the bezels but that's just because the Nexus 6 bezels were so small other than that I'm loving it

I was also vary impressed of the sound quality from just out of the box. I’ve all was prefer stock android but one of the main reasons that I root my phones was to use Viper but now I have been thinking that I’ll won't have to.
BTW:

Only complaint so far is the volume and power buttons being in the middle. the first thing I did was unlock decrypt and root . Plugging in and unplugging the cable I would always hit the power button which sucked when I was in bootloader mode and I plug my cable in and damn the phone is booting because my hand touched the power button. other than that this phone is ace . I need my other cases to come in. I had two verus cases but they weren't cut right so I sending them back for a return.

I'm coming from a oneplus one so I'm sure the camera will be better when mine arrives lol

I`m using this as my work phone, probably the best built Android Device I have ever used. I mainly use iOS devices, but this Nexus 6p is maybe the first Android device I could see my self using as a daily driver assuming I did not use iOS for personal use. Great Device, I had the LG G4 and the S6 edge earlier this yr and enjoy the build quality on this far more, but I will say the s6 has the best phone I used all year on a phone in comparison to the g4, 6p and the 6s+ I use as a personal phone.

First of all, sorry if this thread is in the wrong place, and I know that there have been a few comparisons between the two.
My 2 year contract is ending, and I was more interested about how you think they've aged during these 10-11 months since their release. In my country they are roughly the same price on a 2 year contract (the G5 is about 20-30 Euros cheaper than the S7).
I would like to hear from you about the everyday performance (battery, gaming, lags, heat problems?...basically every aspect). I've read that the cameras of the both phones are pretty much neck and neck, and that they are both excellent.
Which one would you recommend me for the next 2 years?

G5 by far, The lag of the S7 is insane...

As he said the G5 has no lag. UI is smooth and I prefer it over TouchWiz. By other hand S7 is beautiful with all those glass and metal. In my country G5 is much cheaper than S7 so it was easy. I would still choose the G5 I prefer the camera, the UI and we are about to get Nougat.

I love my G5, but I feel the S7 won this round. If you like big screeb, the V20 is the best out there. Great phone! If you want removable battery, IR blaster, wide angle lens and best camera manual mode, go for G5. Go for the S7 for the better build, the better point&shoot camera and the better screen. The G5 camera is better if you know how to use it.. it is more capable. But if you just want a quick point&shoot, the S7 will do a better job. Overall I want to recommend the G5 because I like it a lot, but it has 2 major faults. One is the GPS, there ia a problem with the golden pins that lose contact with the antenna on the back of the phone. Quick and easy fix but atill annoying and should not happen on a flagship. Second is image retention. If you are Rooted, there is a quick and easy fix. If not, you will need Blue Light Filter app in the background. I'm rooted so I don't have this issue. My only issue so far is the GPS. Happened to me after 7 months. Fixed it in 10 minutes but i had to open the phone. For common user, S7 IMO (unless you can handle the V20 size and then of course V20).
Ans yes, UI is better on the G5 and smoother. Also the camera , for me , is much better. I like the better manual controls and the wide angle lens.

The only thing I am jealous bout with S7 is the water resistance and design. $20-30 cheaper? You sure? With my phone company huge price difference. I can get the G5 for $300 plus tax. S7 $800 plus tax.
The specs bout the same. LG g5 got a better cam. Just look at comparisons and you be the judge. I might have a biased view. LG G5 gets a lot of hate, but its a great phone.
I am sorry but that's a huge price difference and a bout the same specs. LG g5 has a better Cam, removable battery, sd slot, etc. Makes me pick LG G5 all day. Save yourself money bro get it.

Yep, the price for just the phone G5 is 650 euros vs the 680 euros for the S7 in my phone company. When buying them on a 2 year contract, the price difference is even smaller (20 smth euros). I don't know how that's possible...
I'm considering the G5, because my G3 still works without any lag, and somehow it's Samsungs' phones custom to start lagging just before a newer version of the phone is released
How's the camera for just point and shoot, because I don't think I'll be making to many pictures using manual control? What's the problem with the GPS? Is it easily solvable or does it require to get a replacement unit? And around how much of screen on time do you get?

Im a phone addict for saying it in some way, i had iphone 6 Plus, Galaxy s6, Galaxy s5, Iphone 5, Iphone 4 after using them all got a LG G4 and the rest named are all sold.. After that i went with the LG G5 and to be perfectly honest, it wins over them all, i dont even gonna try S7 since G5 runs perfectly, no issues, smooth, great battery life, great updates, in my opinion best overall phone atm.. My friend is a Samsung fan and even him said G5 its better overall S7, so go ahead without doubts with the G5..

Saying no LAG seems pushing the truth a bit, here is my view of a user who has been using the S5 901f for a couple of years.
What probably has not helped the G5's cause in my case is that samsung made massive performance improvements on their android 6 touchwiz for the S5.
So I have basically been comparing my 901f to the G5 and also to the S7 edge who my brother in law owns and let me have a go with it. Its the more powerful variant of the S7 here in the uk not the snapdragon 820 version.
Also to consider thanks to a good custom kernel my S5 is well tuned, especially with using the zzmoove governor.
So
In terms of overall performance, I would say sadly my S5 beats my G5, the S7 beats them both.
The G5 is very fast at multitasking, so once stuff is loaded, you can switch between apps very quickly and they keep their loaded state, but for stuff not loaded its for some reason slower than both samsung phones.
Some stuff wont stay cached e.g. better battery stats and sms messages, both visibly LAG on my G5 when the simc ard is inserted, I gave the phone to my brother in law to play with, I didnt mention the performance and he commented the phone was laggy. (this was before I did tuning).
Also performance is not everything, when comparing the phone features, samsung wins hands down. The colour tone can be changed, the unique samsung features are actually useful, 2g only mode can be set, has auto redial, better dialer/contacts app.
Samsung has much bigger dev community on XDA, e.g. unless there is a private hidden forum, there is not one single working custom kernel for the G5, that is juat a big wow.
Amoled vs IPS, amoled is a very clear winner, I think what doesnt help the G5 is that its IPS is a poor IPS, my oneplusone phone is also IPS but has less backlight bleed, and better viewing angles than the G5. Amoled is just the pinnacle of flat screen display technology, even apple I think are moving to amoled for their next phones. I only need to look at my G5 slightly off angle and I have contrast shift. I expect overtime I would get used to it, but if you used to samsung displays I think you in for a shock.
Samsung has water resistance, in practice I am not sure its a huge deal, as the LG phone is still splash proof (e.g. it should be fine in the rain).
All this doesnt mean I think the G5 is a bad phone, there is definite stuff about it which is nice.
Has FM radio
Always on clock
Speaker placement is better at bottom
Camera app is better (in my opinion)
USB-C is very nice
Fast charging is nice (although the S7 has this also, but not my S5)
Less bloat on stock rom than samsung.
Much better memory management, especially it doesnt aggressively kill background apps like samsung does.
Faster storage
I hope my feedback is helpful, and of course what I prefer to have on a phone you may not agree with, in which case what I listed as flaws of the G5 may not be relevant to yourself.
Also worth mentioning samsung S7 has 2 spatial streams for wifi so AC is 866mbit, N is 150mbit on 2.4ghz and 300mbit on 5.ghz
LG is 433mbit for AC, 75mbit for N on 2.4 and 150mbit for N on 5
Here in the UK on EE the S7 has a large price premium over the G5 still, over a 2 year contract its an extra �15 month x 24 which is �360.

Just switched from the S8 to the G6. Here are my initial thoughts

I was using the S8 (USA Sprint version) from late May until about 2 days ago and I've also been in Spain since late May for work. Unfortunately I broke the **** out of my S8 (it scratches, cracks, and or breaks extremely easily without a case) and while I have the Samsung insurance, they don't ship outside of the USA apparently.
Since i'd be in be in Europe for a few more weeks, I decided to pick up the G6 since it was way cheaper than the S8 (at least in Barcelona). I was surprised to see how much more I liked this phone than the S8, I would have never seen myself as getting a LG phone but it was the only other phone with a high display ratio like the S8.. and after I used the high display ratio on the S8 I just couldn't go back (even temporarily).
Anyway, let's talk about the good stuff.
-Display/Design: I like the S8's design a little better (narrower and easily to hold, curved screen looks cooler). LG Display is still great though. As for the design, the metal sides on the G6 feel much better. I also like how the fingerprint scanner is placed on the G6 but moreso how it's also a power button. I don't like how the G6 has the headphone jack on the top, though, but I'm glad it's at least there.
-Software: The S8 was so slow. Even going through Package Disabler and disabling a good amount of the bloatware (and using Nova Launcher Prime) the thing lagged way too much. This drove me nuts. I tried optimizing it as best I could. I got it a little better, but still nowhere near as fluid as I thought such an expensive flagship would be. On the G6 the software is so much quicker. There's much less added bloatware (don't get me wrong, some of the bloatware on the S8 is actually really nice) and everything is much more fluid. It's extremely close to stock Android. On the S8 you click the home button and there's sometimes a delay; I haven't really noticed this with the G6.
-Camera: I took some jaw dropping photos with my S8 -- haven't had much time to try the G6's yet but hopefully it's as good. G6 has dual cameras and wide angle options on the front and back, so there's that.
-Battery: Too early for me to make a judgement on this but I wasn't really happy with the battery I was getting on the S8 (with optimizations). Fast charge is nice and on both.
-SideSync: SideSync is a Samsung only feature that lets you control AND mirror your entire Android device and get all of its notifications on the PC. I was blown the **** away at how well Samsung developed this (it wasn't half assed like some Samsung stuff is). It worked very well connected via both Wifi and USB. It actually saved my life when my LCD died by enabling me to use every aspect of my phone.
-Iris Scanner: It worked really well, but its not practical. You have to hold the phone up and angle it a certain way EVERY TIME you try to unlock using it. It's stupid.
-Fingerprint Scanner: Both devices have really good ones. I think the G6's is slightly better but I could just be perceiving this because it's easier to put your finger on and its bigger).
-Heartbeat sensor: S8 has one, works pretty well (not sure about accuracy but seems accurate). Can't say I really used it much.
My deciding factor on why I prefer the G6 is the software. There's a lot of negative attention on the fingerprint scanner but not so much on how slow the software was. I expect a flagship to have minimal stutter and be pretty fluid. The S8 was a huge disappointment when it came to that despite the several optimizations I made. The S8 has a killer design, great hardware, and some great features (like SideSync), but the software lag is a deal breaker.
Note: I was using a US variant of the S8 with the ****tier processor, but personally I don't believe that the processor difference would be big enough to make it as slow as it was.

Since 2015 when I had purchased the amazing LG G4 where I didn't like the Galaxy S6 (no more Samsung for me) I had strong belief that LG is superior to Samsung in some ways! From these 2 years to present, LG is slowly gaining popularity and momentum due to better UI (LG UI is best imo and also better than boring and simple stock Android) in 2016 LG G5 was really underrated that it defeated flat Galaxy S7 in most aspects where as the LG V20 was better than the Galaxy S7 Edge as well as Galaxy Note 7! Now the more surprising thing is how can a really powerful device running on latest SD 835 with Samsung's software TouchWiz isn't smooth as any LG ! LG G6 with slightly older SD 821 is seriously very well optimised with LG UX 6.0 very smooth and fast just like the One Plus 3T or the Google Pixel. Hats of to LG for the LG G6 for amazing cameras, all round proper optimizations including fantastic battery life lasting whole day etc. Imagine another LG device like the upcoming LG V30 running on SD 835 with LG UX 6.0 and also similar or better than the G6's camera sensor (something better than IMX 258 but LG G6's camera optimization is superior with this sensor and oh that wide angle is crazy) would be the ultimate beast which can be a favorite for years! Galaxy Note 8 would be really boring. LG can do a lot better in sales if all variants of the LG G6 can be bootloader unlocked where as only single SIM international version can be rooted and will have more community support.

Two coworkers of mine got their S8+ a little over a week after I got my G6. One of them just had to get a replacement due to pixels being green all the time even when the screen is off and her boyfriend is having green screen burn in issues.
My G6 has been dropped (Yes I have a case and Tempered Glass Screen Protector) multiple times and it's having no issues at all.
This is how the pixel and pixel XL should have been designed.
This phone is the best device of 2017 only ones that have a chance to beat it are the next Pixels and the OnePlus 5.

It seems to me like the Note 8 is just going to be an S8 with a few upgrades along with the pen and the bloatware thay comes with it. It's disappointing. Samsung did an excellent job with the hardware and design though. I wish they could just make a real international phone compatible with all networks (my European G6 probably won't work on Sprint which wasn't a problem until I realized I want to stay with it). Though I think it's not psosviel.

I read a lot about the production issues but I personally didn't have any manufacturing defects on mine. The phone was just extremely fragile and I disliked every case I tried so I went caseless. Maybe one day we will have phones that are well designed and also durable.

Great write up OP. Samsung did a great job about marketing the hell out of the Infiniti display. And I think most people are seduced by it's display
For me, I didn't want the gimmicky curved screen and wanted a phone that was buttery smooth and didn't lag. After playing with both at the store I went with the LG G6 and couldn't be happier.

There should be more comparison like this. Samsung UI (whatever they call it - Experience or TouchWiz) is lagging regardless the launcher, how strong the CPU is (of course, things get bettet with the stronger CPU).
Samsung should spend some of advertising money on optimizing their UI. I did get frustrated when my S6 Active and S7 Active lagging while surfing on Chrome....

Yes exactly. It wasn't just the TouchWiz launcher as I was using Nova Launcher Prime. There are definitely some serious underlying issues with the software.

S8 is bleeding edge, G6 is cutting edge.

After years with Samsung (Nexus, S4, S5), I waited for Samsung to get back on course for my needs (primarily expandable storage) so I held on to my S5 for as long as I could. This year though, it was time to move on so I explored the S8. The curved screen design did nothing for me, my hands-on experience with it at stores was meh, and the in-depth and real-user reviews gave me some doubts. And the lack of a proper case with included screen cover (i.e. Otterbox Defender) was the proverbial nail on the coffin.
Adding to the comments on a few of the features of the LG G6:
Design/Software I liked the LG G4 when it came out but didn't need a new phone at the time, so I jumped at the chance to get the G6 (US997 unlocked) and I can say I am extremely happy with the phone so far. Still getting used to the way LG does its software thing, but no deal-breakers so far. I am not jumping into customizing it right away, not until I get used to it or annoyed by it, lol. The phone's physical design is extremely comfortable on the hand, even with a case. It fits nicely in the hand and one-handed use is still possible despite the increased screen real estate.
Fingerprint Scanner The scanner works extremely well, at least compared to the slide-your-finger design of the S5 and lot of laptops. I just have to get used to not pressing down on the button. More than once I've unlocked/locked my phone in one fell swoop. The position of the scanner is certainly better on the G6 than the S8, particularly if you use the phone with your left hand. I do wonder if Samsung designers didn't consider left-hand usage.
Camera: I've had excellent results with the G6 camera though I can see what people refer to when they say the camera tends to overprocess the images. The wide-angle lens has come in handy multiple times. The fact you can shoot raw with this phone is something I can't wait to explore as I know it will address the overprocessing issues. Others have recommended using alternative camera apps, so that might be another option.
Battery This is of course anecdotal, but battery life has been excellent so far, lasting all day for my use. It's nice to get home with over 50% of battery life, even with the always on display enabled, various messengers firing off all day, calling, and streaming/playing music from my phone.
SideSync OMG, not having SideSync (or its equivalent) is the one thing I am absolutely struggling with. I use it at work to manage my phone, monitoring alerts, and streaming music from my 128 GB card without having to keep the phone unlocked all the time or wiring up the phone to my computer to control audio. SideSync was a seamless integration of the phone into my computer, just one more app on my screen that I could fully control. All LG tools I've tried are pretty much a joke compared to SideSync.

I have both a LG G6 (quad-DAC version) and a S8+ (Exynos). Got the G6 first and the S8 a couple of days ago. I have had both variants of the G6, with and without DAC and they don't differ in feel or performance. My main findings are these:
Fingerprint scanner: The LG one blows the Sammy out of the water. Not only because of the placement but for function and accuracy too. The obvious flaw with the Sammy is the placement. But that coupled with that you have to place your finger correctly on it instantly does not help. On the LG you can slide your finger over it and when you stop, the scanner reads your finger. The Samsung can not do this. You have to put your finger on it without swiping upon it. It sucks. End of story. It's to narrow too.
Camera: Both phones overprocesses images. Specially sharpness and noise reduction. However S8 has the much cleaner images image quality wise as it has a better sensor than the LG. However the wide angle on the LG is super fun and no other brand has it so it's a big plus for the LG. Photos in the dark specifically looks much better on the S8. In daylight it's pretty much even. LG camera software lags a lot from time to time though. It can sometimes take up to 5 seconds to start the camera and up to 2 seconds shutter delay. Not OK at all. Have not experienced this on the S8.
Software: The S8 is much smoother in scrolling but LG is quicker and has much less lag overall (camera is the exception). But I do get a much smoother experience on the S8 which quite frankly surprised me a lot. The G6 stutters a lot compared to the S8. S8 is stuffed with functions, too much if you ask me but a lot of it is also fun. However I don't miss any of it on the G6. I do miss the pull down notification button in navbar from the G6.
Battery: A little too early for me to tell. But G6 seems to have the better battery life when using full brightness out in broad daylight on mobile data. However inside on WiFi on lower brightness the S8 most likely wins fairly easily.
Display: No secret here that the screen in the S8 is a winner. However whites are a little more white on the G6 and has more "punch" to it. But blacks obviously suffer instead. But it has good blacks for being an LCD. Both screens are very good but S8 has the advantage. G6 screen is sharper because of RGB-matris and not pentile like the Sammy. Even at the same screen size the LG would be sharper.

I just traded my G6 for an S8 (T-mobile JOD), and I pretty much agree with everything you said, except that for me, the G6 was all around a smoother software experience. I COMPLETELY agree about the issues with LG's camera app launching too slowly. That was probably my biggest pet peeve about the device.
I'm happy with my s8, just as I was happy with my G6. Both are great devices.

Just out of curiosity did you have the Exynos version or Snapdragon? The S8+ really has much smoother scrolling for me while it's slower overall. The G6 stutters a lot for me and I mean a lot.

Snapdragon. It isn't because my S8 is bad with stuttering, though (except with animations returning to the home screen). It's just that my G6 didn't stutter much at all with scrolling and had more fluid animations in general.
The strange thing to me is that low end devices offer such a similar experience with regard to smoothness. I was trying out a Nokia 6 the other day and thinking, why am I paying so much for these high-end devices. Okay, screen and camera, but it seems like these things should offer an (almost) perfectly smooth user experience.

I have the Exynos version. There might be differences. GSMArena mentions fairly big performance difference between the Exynos and Snapdragon version in favor of the Exynos. But yes, returning to homescreen often stutters.
I know what you mean. I've had a Lenovo P2 for €30 and its smoothness beats the crap out of both phones. Horrible camera though. But Nexus smooth for the most part.

I bought a G6 coming from a Note 5, first Samsung phone I have owned since the original Galaxy S.
I won't be going back to Samsung anytime soon, the bloat, the lag and the random battery drain 'features' of touchwiz have really soured me. Which is a shame, as build quality and features wise I think Samsung are producing the best Android phones on the market, sadly the software completely destroys the experience.

You should try a factory reset on the G6. It can greatly reduce the scrolling lag , as it did för me.

Yeah, still far from perfect.. But my phone was very laggy at first, and it it did help.

Bought a Note 8 and like my 4 more- anyone similar who has decided on 8 after awhile?

I've had a Note 2 then 4 since @ 2012-2013. I just bought a used Note 8 and have had it for @ 3 days. I really don't like it very much. I remember feeling like going from the the 2 -> 4 was unnecessary, but don't think I disliked the 4 when I first used it. I'm wondering if I just need to acclimate to it & tweak it to my preferences.
The camera seems awesome, I like the water resistance, I love having more RAM, fingerprint is great, otherwise:
-it feels more difficult to use
-it feels less intuitive opening multi window, using the settings menu, it feels like everything requires an extra 2-3 steps
-it doesn't feel noticeably faster to me in everyday use. Apps seem to take @ the same time to transition open, screen swiping feels about the same. Maybe it's noticeable under heavy use.
-it still takes 1:45 to charge
-the width feels much better in my hand, but I don't like the screen ratio. When using it as GPS in the car, it feels, at best, equal to the Note 4 (I think the 4's width is an advantage). It's really irritating that the top/bottom edges of videos get cut off when fullscreen. The screen color is nice.
-menu/back buttons are a wash. sometimes annoying, sometimes nice.
-i hate the s-pen pop out so far

Almost all your problems are solved in settings itself. Try to explore.

If you don't like the Note 8 & it's not for you, go ahead & sell it as planned. Everyone is different, no one here should convince you otherwise, they shouldn't have too, no point in asking our opinions, it's your preference. I went from Note 2 to Note 5. I'm not the type to upgrade every single year, not worth it IMO. Note 8 was a nice upgrade from the Note 5. I'm loving the Note 8, my favorite phone to date, but I'm also rooted with custom recovery so I can configure as I please, I can't live with out those features.

what I miss the most from the note 4 is the leathery back and the paint on the bezel that wasn't as likely to scratch or chip.
what I definitely do not miss is the 1 year life expectancy of the motherboard.
mine died from motherboard failure after about a year, it got repaired under warranty, and a year after I got it back it died from the exact same motherboard failure.
the note 8 feels more fragile on the outside, but I definitely wouldn't ever want to go back to the note 4.

I got the 8 and used it for a month or so. I them went back to the 4 for a couple of days thinking there wouldn't be much difference but in reality the 8 is so much better.
Although I wasn't a fan of the 18:9 display initially I do prefer it now and the 4 was also noticeably slower. Even with a new Anker battery the 8 out lasts the 4 by some margin.
I still have my Note 4 as a backup but definitely no going back for me.

A side from not having the user removable battery. I actually like the Note 8 more than I expected. It is fast, the design and features are very good. Just wished that Samsung Notes and S Note had the OCR function from the Note 8.

I had the Note, Note3, LG G4 (worst decision I've ever made) and now the Note8. When I got the Note3 I thought it was the best phone ever created, with so many good features that I liked. Now, having the Note8, I feel like this is the greatest phone ever made. There's nothing about the Note8 that I don't like.

Same as above, except for me I tried the LG V10 hated it.
Note 4 was my favorite so far. Obviously not withstanding technology advancement etc compared to the Note 8.

This is my 1st Note. I remember one of my colleagues had a note some years ago and I thought it was a monstrosity at the time. But he loved the thing and he would pull that S pen out and looked like he was having a ball. Now that I have one I understand that gleam in his eye. This device is just a great big beast of functionaliy and fun and hands down one of the best devices I've owned. Almost a year after purchase and it's running as smoothly as the day it was unboxed. I'm still on Nougat and Oreo has been sitting in the cue for weeks now. My phone runs great as it is now and I don't see anything that O has to offer that compels me to risk all of the problems others have had after upgrading. Anyone else?

I Have a note 3, a note 4, a note 7 and a note 8, the note 8 is obviously the best in every aspect, only thing I sometimes miss a little is the IR blaster, and of course the removable batt, but the water resistant feature gives you peace of mind, so, it is a ttade off, my note 4 has a a very annoying echo in calls, that would be my only complaint got tired trying to eliminate it

I wanted the V10, but it wasn't available in South Africa. The reason I went for the G4 and not the Note5, at the time, is because I wanted a slightly cheaper phone and the Note5 didn't have the SD Card storage feature, which was a deal-breaker for me.
I see a lot of people saying the Note4 is or was their favourite. I have a friend that still has a Note4 and an S8 and she says she still loves the Note4 very much. More than the S8. She basically just uses the S8 for Whatsapp and the Note4 for everything else.

Yep, Note 4 was lovely. Skipped the Note 5 for the same reason you did. Not being finiky, but I'd like to see some sort of future Note model without the curved edges. I don't think the curved edges have any purpose currently.

That's great you like it as it is but the big argument for upgrading is the security patches...
You might find a few little extra's included that need searching for too as they aren't paraded around or listed in the changelog...
Not saying you have to but I have never had any problem with upgrades - using a non-rooted Exynos 950F.
Sometimes the pay-off is worth the risk and sometimes not, I'll leave it in your hands to decide what to do with your toy...

The curved and TV-remote type of body is definitely lame and unnecessary for a gadget that is supposed to have notes taking as its strong point. Why not leave those for the Galaxy S family ? The inability to change/remove battery is a combination of planned obsolescence and surveillance dystopia. The absence of AOSP/Lineage/Resurrection ROMs is the price we have to pay for Exynos. Battery and standby time are mediocre but at least it charges fast and the camera is good enough. The stylus is as crap/cheap as ever.
The problem is that, with Note 4, you want to go with performance/Exynos; then you basically have an unsupported/abandoned mobile, even though LineageOS has been resurrected lately in XDA by @dl12345 (original work by @bonuzzz). And the damn thing typically runs too hot and often throttles. RAM is low too.
Note 5 was a downgrade in every regard.
Note 3 was my favourite and probably the best, at least regarding popularity/support/market impact. But no OIS, terrible camera performance by today's standards (especially if you got rid of Samsung ROMs in order to make sense for having it), and the phone's built quality leaves a lot to be desired (Note 4 was an improvement).
A Note 7/FE with removable battery and a better built stylus would have been the ideal phone for me but designers/marketers/managers at Samsung never have a clue.

My Note 4 died a view months ago so I bought a Note 8. Although it has more power and all I still miss my Note 4. I hate the round edges of my Note 8. It's a pain in the a.. to use it with remote desktop. Those edges are good for nothing. I also hate the fact that I can't replace the battery anymore. Now I have to carry a power bank with me, while before I just had a fully charged replacement battery with me.
Screen and power is very good, but the old screen was better as it has not had this silly aspect ratio. I want to show my pictures with my phone, but due to the silly aspect ratio, I have huge black borders left and right and the actual area feels smaller than on my Note 4.
So yes, I liked my Note 4 more, but the Note 8 is not a bad phone at all.

So I'm not here to praise or affiliate myself with a particular brand, what I mean is that some very much love Samsung and don't like any criticism, or others may disagree and that's fine (my words are just from my perspective). Everyone has there own likes, things they find useful, basically we are all different and that is just fine. Opinions from others that may follow are to be respected as we all won't share the same experience or views.
The Galaxy Note 10 got released in two variants oh wait no make that three, and yes I think this is a good idea (although price points i am not agreeable on).
However as the title suggests this little review is based on the model I have SM-N976b that's the Exynos 9825 5G variant.
Display: What we have is a 6.8" Dynamic Amoled Display and there is very little disputing it's best in class. From the vibrant colours to the deep blacks it really is a stunning screen. The punch-hole is symmetrical and really doesn't get in the way or my enjoyment (however some might not like, and find it distracting). I tend to appreciate larger displays (having recently purchased the Mate 20 X 5G 7.2") I was particularly pleased that Samsung decided to make the Display larger on the + variant. With it being a note , that is aimed at productivity and media 6.8" was/is a delight for me personally.
Performance: The performance of the 9825 is marginal if anything above the 9820 (used on the S10, S10+). However I get tired of the complaints, yes perhaps the 855 is marginally better in certain areas, it's not a huge gulf between the two that is going to dramatically affect the user experience. I have found it to be very fast and fluid and hasn't hindered my experience. Basically it performs as a flagship processor should. Very little complaints from me.
Functionality: We have the good old S-Pen and without a doubt it's still industry leading (Perhaps because not many oem's have decided to compete) however as a productivity tool it's fantastic (wether you use it not). I am not sold on the Harry potter waving the pen around, it's just a feature that I think Samsung could have left out & focused that time and resources in another area. However I get that they wanted to add something else to the pen, but I don't think many will be using it.
You have here with the Note 10+ a device that offers up great features as in improving DeX to be used as a virtual environment on a laptop (Some may benefit from this) link to Windows to provide that ecosystem and connection with your PC/Laptop. We also have Gamelink (Conning Soon) along with all the other things like app edge, dual window. So it really does offer up that fantastic functionality.
Battery: Well I have the Mate 20 X and with the 7.2" Display (all be it 1080p) it without a doubt lasts longer than the Note 10+, wouldn't say by a huge margin, I usually and can easily get 7hrs on the note, but with the X it can be 8+, but EMUI is more restrictive in app management. I think the Note could be better optimised and I'm sure with updates it will.
Camera: The cameras on the Note all be it just little improvements over the S-Line, they perform well in most areas, fall short in others. Yes you can say the P30 Pro or pixel are better, some areas yes they most certainly are, but even they fall short in let's say the video department, so as a balanced camera then yeah it's great and that is what I look for, if you want the best if everything Also buy the P30 Pro & Pixel and carry around 3 devices
Design: I think this is where Samsung spent a chunk of time, with the Display & rearrangement, all be it most certainly Q's from Huawei but that's not a negative thing and I absolutely love what Samsung have done here. It's a stunning device.
My Honest opinion: I was complaining slightly that Samsung perhaps could of should of done more and I still stand with that in certain areas. These are in the camera software, perhaps that 90hz (yes I don't think this was possible, due to the S-Pen), but would have been a nice option, but when you look at it, its an iterative improvement, but the areas of focus have been done well, and here we have a stunning productivity device that will make many users happy, but leave some disappointed as expectation, left us without some of the little things we are seeing from others not here on the note.
After using it now for 5 days I fully appreciate a nice and solid device that covers most areas well, but like any device falls short in others. I'm very happy with my purchase and I hope you all are to

Pretty much fantastic in every aspect, minus four:
- terrible battery life (the worst I've ever had to my opinion, compared to Mate 9, Note 4 and Xperia Z1...)
- no high refresh rate display (and still annoying OLED motion blur)
- slow/unsecure unlocking (UDFS/front camera)
- Samsung's "OneUI" software is good overall, but has still strong geographic differences (in term of app availability, see goodlock software for exemple), and doesn't allow you to tweak your terminal to the extent to it should be possible (Galaxy Theme store (yerk!) should basically be Substratum (lite) + Synergy))

It is really amusing to see how some complain about mainly, battery, speakers, camera and signal, to the grade of "terrible", "worst" etc, I have no complain at all, I come from a note 8, which indeed was an excellent device, and this note10+ is way better, in all aaspects, I did not have the 9, but I have heard always that it was just a little increment over the 8, any way, I am really, really pleased with my note10+, the best device I have had

As far as i'm concerned yes...
- battery life
- microSD
- TOF, even though still beta-like software for 3D scan, but works very well for blurring background photos (you can see it when comparing front cam and rear cam)
- larger screen, cause i love this (better for watching videos or multitasking)
I would always feel like i have a sub phone if i went note10 route but that's juste me
Downside is the weight of note10+, i find it kinda heavy in the hand.

I absolutely love my Note 10+. I wish I had pre-ordered, but I wasn't ready for an upgrade from my Note 8 yet.
I got the Aurora Glow (Snapdragon, Verizon US), mainly because it was the one that was readily available and I wouldn't have to wait. I thought I'd just slap a case on it and never have to look at it, but it turns out I love that crazy rainbow bastard and got a nice clear case. I'm averaging 7hrs of SOT (at highest resolution, no power savings, wifi/data, etc), I haven't had to "top up" during the day once since I got it. Sleep drain is almost non-existent...maybe 4-5% overnight (6-7hrs) with WiFi and bluetooth on. I do a lot of artwork on the fly, and this is even more of a workhorse than my Note 8 was. I do multi-layered (usually 12-20 layers) drawings in Medibang Paint at at least 600dpi and this glorious phone doesn't even stutter. AND (and I know a lot of you don't like it) I was psyched to see a screen protector pre-installed. I know it's a crappy one, but it was great to have while waiting for my "real" one to show up. Really small, but well-appreciated, inclusion. I don't even mind the loss of a headphone jack as much as I thought I would. My portable battery has the wireless charging built in (not that I've needed to use it yet), and I think the sound in the USB C headphones included is better than the ones I got with my Note 8.
My ONLY complaint is the camera. Photos look overly soft, and faces seem flattened out. My Note 8 took much better photos out of the box. At least, in my case, it definitely seems to be a software issue...because using GCam improves the photos dramatically. And it seems that Sammy has already released an update to address photo quality...I just have to wait for Verizon to push out the damn thing. I don't take pro photos or anything, 90% of my picture taking is my kids...but my Note 8 gave me much clearer photos of them running around than I've gotten from my 10+. That being said, I know there's a fix on the way so I'm not going to piss and moan too much about it. I look forward to really using the hell out of the camera once it's updated, especially night mode...I didn't have that on my Note 8.
All in all, nothing but love for this phone.

I perceive the photos to be better than those of my note8, yesterday an update mainly for the fingerprint and camera, became available for my note10+, I am yet to see what improvements it may yield

I was looking at a new Chinese flagship (Realme X2 Pro) but then got to play with Dex on a 10 - bought the Note 10+ dualSIM right there, coming from an S8+. Dex is just fantastic, on my Windows or Mac computers, with an additional 95W wall charger and a 100w USB C hub. Now the phone is fully integrated in my desktop workflow and part of the hub with other devices I own, and I love the ability to cut&paste from/to the phone from my main Windows machine. All other elements one comes to expect from a Samsung flagship are there of course, and video quality is excellent. Writing with the S-Pen on the Nebo App is enough for note taking - I can leave the iPad Pro at home for meetings. And Amazon Germany gave a unexpected $120 rebate, plus tax return from Amazon upon leaving the EU, got a great deal altogether. My S8+ lasted three years and thanks to this community is updated well, will now go to my wife.

3 Stars. The magic is lost. Nothing is special about the series anymore.
Call me jaded as someone who's owned every iteration since the Note 2, but this is not the best from the best that previous Note series enjoyed. Same cameras from S10. Would have liked a better tech that includes a seamless uninterruption of the screen. I can do without a social media whore cam or have a motorized selfie cam for those selfie whores. Also, could have used a speedier screen refresh rate found on the the cheaper One+. Otherwise, speed, battery life, features, all the best android has to offer. Nothing earth shattering and futuristic like the first time we saw the Note Edge or Note 5 or BT pen from note 9. Still has a hole in the screen. Still has a "just a refreshed design until next iteration" look. Screen size increased by a hair. Even diluted the brand by making a smaller Note. I usually go for the best but since I had the blue Note 9, I wanted something different and the Aura Blue is gorgeous but disappointed it only comes in 256gb, another ding against Samsung. Overall, 3 stars because the Note series is known for cutting edge and when you have a camera stolen from an older phone and when you decide to toss in a gimmicky AR camera that everyone used for the first minute and forget about but failed to work on the thing that everyone uses 90% of the time, the screen, like incorporate a 120 refresh rate or do away with the hole or notch, then you aren't living to the high standard that the Note series are known for and that its fanbase expects. You used to be able to say, look what my phone has that you don't. Reverse charging? woopty do. My S10 had that before you. 3 cameras? "Stereo" speakers? Well, my phone has a built in BT stylus. So, my cheaper Note 10 does too! *facepalm* We no longer have something special. Used to be we had it first and then it trickled to other devices. Now, it's the other way around.

Pay attention. You're wrong. We're reviewing the Note 10+. So this isn't the only phone with the s pen. If you pay attention, the diluted note 10 also has one as well as the upcoming note 10 lite. So it still stands, the magic is lost.

Please check your private messages. Remeber folks this is a fun hobby for us all. There's never a need to get fired up and taking jabs and low blows. If you're starting to get heated just log off and go do something else or keep scrolling.

Let me preface this by saying I am picky about my phones and this is one of the worst I have seen in years! If you have an old phone I can understand some of the upgrade but here are my thoughts coming well staying with a Note 10+. Never bought and returned a phone this quick. Returning before it is even released on Friday!!
Let's start with the good, well somewhat......
Screen: Once again Samsung delivers a world class screen. Best in brightness, color accuracy, etc etc everything like normal that they always produce in their flagships. Now for the downsize, the infamous 120hz screen refresh rate. Not worth it here. Smoother scrolling, sure but barely. I honestly don't even mind the 1080p and 120 hz just the need for the 120hz on a phone is overkill. Was gaming smoother sure, do I game much on my phone, no not really. The 240 touch response I can tell more of a difference and a worthy difference then the 120 hz refresh
Processing power: Phone is fast, minus animations. Photo processing, night mode shots are a big difference. Much faster in that aspect. Wish we saw little more ram and more storage though at this price
Battery: 5000 mah in this device makes it a little thicker but in my short one day of use it stood up pretty well to transferring apps and everything over and hard use for a few hours last night. Couldn't kill it
and now the bad
Camera: throw all the numbers at it and it will be great.... well not so fast. Main shooter in 12 or 108 mp mode cannot focus on anything. Piece of paper on desk in front of you, good luck. Zoom a few feet away from you, also good luck. 5x/10x/30x zoom is better then Note 10+ of course but how often are you going to use this? Everyday? Once a week? Once a month? Still not great quality (usable) at 10x or 30x really so no point in my book. 5x is crisp but falls off too much after that for me to use. Wide angle is same as note so no real improvement here. Camera also seems to make everything more saturated then I like as well almost to the point of unrealistic. The one and only thing the iPhone can do well and the note seems to be closer to that realistic representation then the Ultra.
Design: not that the design is bad but feels a tad on the chunkier side. Rounder edges do help but does not feel as sleek as nice to hold as note or even s10. Thicker as well to house that battery and camera module. Also worried about how scratched the module bump will become after months of abuse.
UI: Let me first say I hate Android 10/Samsung UI 2.0, I am still using 9 and the Ultra reminded me why. App animations are slow (yes can fix in dev options but still), quick replying to text or message in status bar is not instant like prior android generations. Don't know if this is an android 10 or Samsung UI 2.0 problem but seems like it should be an upgrade not a downgrade
Price: $1400 is a lot even for 2020. That is also only for 128 gb and 12 gb ram model. So no upgrade to ram compared to Note and a loss of half the storage compared to entry level note. Plan was to trade in note 10+ and pay $800 and it isn't worth that tp be honest. Not even close. Only foreseeable upgrades are little brighter screen and zoom lens. The rest is a downgrade to me or the same.
I will continue to use note 10+ until Note 20 maybe? Needs to have something better for the money it is going to cost though
