Hi
I've ordered the redmi note 2 and would like to install a custom rom on it when I receive it. Can somebody tell me what the easiest method to root the phone and install TWRP is? There seems to be so many different ways and I'm finding it abit confusing. Also do I need to unlock the bootloader before rooting?
Thanks

Flashed a china dev rom was an easier way without using PC. But first to need to wipe your phone. Then installed flashify to flash twrp.img. With twrp, you can flashed any compatible rom you like.
for the redmi note from the wife who only needed root I used Kingroot
And I wanted root and TWRP so I used Windroid toolkit
thanks for the replies. Windroid seems pretty straightforward, I'll give that a go once I get my phone.
You can flash xiaomi.eu latest ROM and you'll get TWRP 3.0. For root you can flash any SuperSU official zip using TWRP

you mean this one? http://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/6-2-25.30340/
that says TWRP needs to be installed before that rom can be flashed?

Yes that one..
"Our ROMs now contains TWRP which will install it automatically and overwrite your MiRecovery (If you still use it)"
"Version 6.2.25 still can be installed via MiRecovery but it will overwrite it to TWRP"
I use xiaomi.eu ROM/Based ROM's because it has my language
ah ok, thanks mate
So I tried updating via updateer with the rom from xiaomi.eu but that failed it said something about the file signature. So I tried the windroid method, the computer picked up the device no problem and it was weorking well. I flashed TWRP and Super SU and completely wiped everything on the phone. Now I'm trying to sideload a rom using windroid, but when I go to the ADB sideload option in TWRP it just stays stuck on "starting ADB sideload feture..." Windroid seems to recognise that the device is in sideload mode but I can't flash anything as it just stays stuck.
Any ideas?
Never mind, my PC picked up the phone while it was in recovery and I was able to just copy the rom file over
As the title says global beta 7.2.9 is out. Anyone installed it?
What about twrp and root compatibility?
http://en.miui.com/download-299.html here is the link
Just installed it without issue with twrp 3.0.3. no issue so far, reinstalled twrp and flash super su 2.79 without problem too

Can you confirm the process please? Is it just:
1. Download the recovery version of the update to the phone.
2. Boot to recovery (TWRP).
3. Install the update zip file.
4. Re install TWRP.
5. Reinstall the SuperSU zip.
6. Reboot to system.
Do we need additional reboots between the steps? Do we need to unroot before installing the update? Does it matter if the existing global beta ROM is several versions old?
Sorry for asking so many questions. I have not updated the ROM since unlocking the bootloader and installing TWRP/SuperSU several months ago and am worried about bricking my phone.
That's the steps i did , i first booted the rom just to be sure everything was OK before reinstalling twrp and supersu. I only had a message telling me the update wasn't successful but after installing twrp and wiping cache everything was fine. As long you install the full rom you should be fine with the update (do a clean flash to be sure). What version of Android is actually running on your phone ?
Update twrp to 3.0.3 as the previous version won't work with nougat

That's good to know. Just to confirm, the update could be applied "dirty" without a need to reinstall all apps and data afterwards?
I am still on global beta 6.11.3 (which is MM) and twrp 3.0.2.0. Is 7.2.9 based on nougat which would require the update of twrp? I had thought that the nougat beta was on a separate thread open to a closed group only...
I did a clean flash when updated to nougat (was on 6.11.10) but did a dirty flash from 7.1.19 to 7.2.9. Update to twrp 3.0.3 is highly recommended as it's updated with nougat libs and 3.0.2 won't "stick" with nougat miui.
Only the fiirst nougat build was on a closed beta but now it's open beta and can be updated via updater app.
Édit: clean flash is not mandatory i guess, i did it only to be sure to have a clean install without rogue app or incompatibility issue between mm and nougat. I use supersu 2.79 and have no issue
Twrp 3.0.3..?? Not available for Mi5 on twrp site.. Any mirror plz..

Look in the mi5 developement thread There is twrp section and in the 3rd post the op uploaded a unofficial release of twrp 3.0.3 but stable enough to be considered as official.

Finally did it, but not without scare - my Mi5 was stuck at the boot logo with "Bootloader unlock" message screen after flashing the recovery version of 7.2.9 update and reflashing TWRP 3.0.3.0. Luckily managed to get the phone into fastboot mode to flash the fastboot version of 7.2.9 and get the phone back on again. Finally reinstalled TWRP and boot into TWRP before rebooting to system successfully.
The key step I had forgotten was the booting into TWRP after its installation over the 7.2.9 stock recovery, which had led to the bootloop.
So I now have updated to 7.2.9. I do notice that the boot process takes quite a bit longer than 6.11.3 (design of nougat?), but once up, the phone feels as responsive as before.
my RedMi Note 4 (mido), Global stable worked fine after root, su etc..
I made the mistake to update official rom yesterday.
Now the Redmi only boots into the TWRP root.
I tried to flash older rom without effect.
What co I do?
THX
What is the problem . Do u want to install custom rom ?

Install redwolf recovery using fastboot and then from redwolf recovery install the miui zip file and lazy flasher. Make sure you format data and perform a clean wipe.

As the title states, will I receive OTA updates for my Redmi 5 after I install TWRP and flash Magisk?

I installed TWRP and Magisk, and I received OTA update, but with custom recovery, the phone can't install it, (it just reboots to TWRP when you press update).
I've read that you can install updates via TWRP but I am not sure from where to download the updates as currently, the official Xiaomi page is down, I presume because of the MIUI 10 update...
You can re-install the stock recovery and maybe unroot the phone and then try again, at least that's what i've read on other forums, but didn't test it myself yet.

Yes, although we still receive OTA update package from MIUI host, we can't update OTA with TWRP recovery for rosy at present. TWRP hasn't supported ota incremental update zips yet. We need some one can build RedWolf Recovery for rosy to have OTA incremental update supported
Yes u will receive update but u have to flash it via TWRP

hmmm... my device updated itself without my permission :crying:
i lost my root and twrp, i'm stuck with useless stupid update
tried searching in internet about root for new update and twrp but nothing for now
i think we will wait weeks or months to see new updates for root and twrp
if i found anything new, i will post here and mention you :good:
Guys
Download Miui update in zip file and flash via recovery.
It doesn't revert to stock recovery and keeps your twrp along with root intact.

I've successfully rooted my miui 10 by this method
https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-4/how-to/guide-root-using-magisk-stock-recovery-t3718203
And i've installed miui 11 now, somehow.. latest magisk (v20.1) can't root my device with the same method. So i tried to root with magisk v2.0 (same i did in miui 10) and its work

i don't have custom recovery, my device back to stock recovery
i tried downgrade with mi flash and step by step from websites but error, tried flash from recovery but it changed, there are 3 options
- restart
- wipe data
- contact mi assistant
no option install update.zip, also from device and check software update, no option to choose install update
everything changed, stupid update, i don't feel any good change
i think developer will take long time to root new update and use custom recovery
no downgrade work, no one try

Why don't you try installing recovery using fastboot method and then flash magisk 20.1 zip through recovery.
Please check if bootloader is still unlocked before trying this.
