I was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction - there's a ton of SGSIII forums on here and I don't know where to find the right info. Lots of dormant forums and dead ends when I go searching. I have an unlocked rooted Verizon SGSIII d2vzw / SCH-I535 on stock Android 4.4.2. I'm looking to upgrade it to the latest and most stable custom ROM. Mostly for security reasons, but if there's any performance improvements that would be awesome. If that doesn't pan out I'll probably have to give in and buy a new phone, and I'm not very impressed with anything they've built in the past 5 years.

I am switching frm BB to android and am quite excited for it. I ordered note for at&t frm amazon.com for 200$$...seems to be a good price.
Now being completely new to the android world and to the world of rooting, flashing, etc. I would appreciate some help or opinions.
After reading various forums and threads, the first things I will do after getting my device is to root it. I will use rootgalaxynote dot com for that.
Next comes upgrading to ICS. This is where I am confused. There are so many versions, how do you guyz figure out which one is the best or the latest. It was soo easy in blackberry, there was a linear numbering system where 7.1 is better than 7.0 and so on. But in adroid, there are sooo many different names like onlyone, noteworthy, cm9, saurom...how to choose one and which one is the latest ?
Next, I have to enable free tethering to my laptop. I had this app on my BB from tether.com, but I don't know which app to use on Note and how to make it work. Any help will be highly appreciated.
Lastly, it would be gr8 if you could let me know what more to do to make my note more useful and efficient with good signal strength and battery life. Also recommendations for the must-have apps would be great.

First off...Welcome.
All of the names you listed are ROMs. They all run on the latest ICS leak 4.0.4. But since you're new to android, Id recommend stock ICS.
The latest ICS leak is called UCLE2. If you want to try it out stock ICS first before flashing roms, you need to download the ICS UCLE2 leaked "tar" file. http://www.ponack.net/designgears/leaks/SGH-I717UCLE2_74A55FA71D15964F9EC9E9489B34DE4E.exe
Be sure to download this file from your computer, not your phone.
I ffound some instructions on how To do it. Make sure you READ it atleast 5 times before actually doing it. ALSO, Be sure to have all the files you need before attempting. If you get confused, search it up on XDA...as most people have already posted it. If not, don't hesitate to ask.

i know you're eager but enjoy your stock rom for a while. also you may not appreciate the responses you will get asking these most basic of questions. all of them have answers easily available in these subforums either by browsing or the search function. those questions have been answered 1000+ times so dont be suprised when no one jumps to give you the answers. this is xda DEVELOPERS (i.e. advanced users) not Noobs 'r Us. have fun learning as we all did.
About to dive into ROMs on my Rezound - haven't gotten around to rooting until today - if you've used Infection 2.3 AND Wildstang CM10.1, wondering if you can provide a few thoughts on which one I might go with first. I'm looking for stability and solid battery life above all else (who isn?t ).

Rom comparison threads never end well so we avoid them. Best advice is to go read the roms you listed and read all their threads to get an idea what you would prefer...then try them out and see what suits you best as no one is the same.

I love the UX/features/philosophy of SlimBeam ROM on my Note, but it does suffer from some instabilities.
Unfortunately, SlimBean for the I717 hasn't been updated in ages and is no longer in their list of supported devices. (Is it possible to run ROMs written for the Note N7000 on a Note I717?)
The I717 also does not support the newest version of CyanogenMod.
I've read thru the ROMs in the Development forums, but does anybody have info on which are still active projects and which are dead ends?
Any recommendations (for or against particular roms)?

i build slim 4.2.2 on a regular basis, your clearly looking at the 4.1.2 version in original development
all the releases i put out see regular updates actually, slim/pk/chamelon/supernexus ect..
edit: and your looking at the wrong place for cm, quincyatt is very well up in the mix with the newest cm releases, get.cm <-- thats where you find the releases
Anytime you choose a "custom" rom there's going to be bugs, or glitches, or random reboots in my opinion. But you're also going to get cool features! You'll have the ability to customize you phone more with custom roms. So it's a trade off. Only you can decide what you can live with and without. If you're looking for custom roms the dev usually updates the title with the last time he updated it. You can then read over the first post and find out what's included feature wise. Very very rarely will you find a complete list of bugs the rom has. You have to surf thru posts to see complaints, and kudos. If you're looking for stability, the i717 got an 4.1.2 JB update a week or so ago. It's the most stable thing out in my opinion. You can give it root access, debloat it, and enjoy a smooth rom if that's what you're after.
Oh and its not possible to run N7000 roms as far as I know. I'm pretty sure you'll brick your device.

Do you know if 4.2.1 stable 1.0 is available anywhere for the I717?
And how stable are the 4.2.2 builds? (I've spent enough years in sw development to be cautious - Mark Twain once wrote "People who love sausage and respect the law should never watch either one being made," and the same definitely applies to software)
In my opinion the 4.2 based custom ROMs are way my stable then the 4.1.2 based ( the exception is 4.1.2 based stock ROMs) used to get a reboot every couple hours . 4.2 rarely do I see one. If you are looking for stable but don't really care about all the frills try Jamie's super nexus the first build is bullet proof pure asop like your phone is a nexus doesn't see a lot of updates but its stable.

I rooted and Loki'ed my gf's VZ S4 with MDK build months ago when I also had an S4, I've since moved to a Moto X and it seems there's been a lot of changes with the builds around here. She wants here phone upgraded to Kit Kat now, and I'm having a really hard time finding how to do it. I've been searching around the forums and googling it, but I can't seem to find a way to take her to stock rooted 4.4.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I apologize if the answer is obvious or has been brought up multiple times (I know how annoying that gets), but its not coming up in my searches. Any guidance would be extremely appreciated. I would be doing it on a Mac preferably, but I can get my hands on Windows if need be, so its not an issue.
Edit: Wow, I guess my brain isn't working right. Now I see 4.4 isn't out for the VZ S4 yet. Guess I'll continue my search until its released.

The official is rumored to be released by the end of this month/beginning of next month but here is a stock deodexed rooted rom of the kk leak that just came out. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2721118
and is specifically for those with mdk bootloaders.
So I'll just pick one at random then? Thanks for the help...
There is a thread with links to all the stock firmware releases. But downgrading has been debated if its even possible. The procedure is detailed in a couple different posts from what I've read. I doubt you will be able to run a kk ROM with the a LL bootloader and modem.

There are still Cyanogenmod 11 (KitKat) builds in the unified development section, that's probably your best bet. As mgp53 pointed out it's difficult if not downright impossible to downgrade android versions using the official firmware, if you're already on 5.1.1

Thanks so much! I am pouring through it now... might take a bit since I don't see a column for version number http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-development#romList but I'll just sort by latest release and click on every single link manually till I see a 4.x that isn't a buggy PoS. I was originally hoping to steer clear of AOSP/CM because I heard the battery life isn't as good as TW or "superslim" style stripped-down stock fws, but at this point I will take what I can get. I've had terrible luck getting any kind of answers across multiple subforums on this site. Your post was the most useful by far. Thanks again.

It really is a shame that 1) the download links on the 600+ Infinity ROM thread are all dead, 2) SlimROM doesn't seem to exist in any meanful/useable state for the s5 even though they have tons of devices including the s3/s4, 3) Sick n Twi5ted for 4.x is a buggy PoS, 4) Liquidsmooth has major missing features such as no camera (You thought releasing a ROM on a 16megapixel flagship device with no camera function was OK enough to start asking for donations and then never got around to adding support for the camera? At least have the decency to put a list of major bugs and missing features in the OP. It is debateably fraudulent to put a donate button where the 'Major Issues' section should be and then not even have a disclaimer.
Users of this site really ought not to have to pour through 60-600 pages to find out major flaws on a ROM. In all the dozens of threads I've sifted through over the past week there was exactly ONE who was up front and honest including a section devoted to missing features/major bugs.

On the bright side, all this madness had led me to seriously consider developing my own ROM and that would probably be a good thing for me in general to learn anyway. Or alternatively I could create a website devoted to archiving older ROMs since there seems to be quite a few that have gone missing here. (think oldversion.com circa 2005)
