It isn't. Real progress is being made and Oreo isn't that far away. Work on AOSP sourcea is atill going strong and more devs joiined!

Aosp is awesome, but the fact that you lose camera quality using aosp rom is just bad, i use my phone primarealy because of camera...

We lost some things on 2016, which is sad. This is a thread of the list of great things that were lost.
First things first, we lost Cyanogenmod services. They declared last year of december that they are going to shut down Cyanogenmod on Dec.31,2016 which is pretty sad for CM fans. We lost the greatest made Custom OS which were running since the early days of rooting. Theyll rename it as LineageOS.
Second, we lost Aditya. Aditya made some Cyanogenmods for G710x and his own ROM which gives some feautures of some devices that is OS named AdityaROM. But his ROMS are still alive but some are not updated. Lets hope he'll comeback someday

It's budget phone... There are 28% of phones that still run on lollipop... And Nougat is on just on 15% (there is even more users on KitKat for God sake).
What would you tell that our phone didn't get past lollipop, it would be like apocalypse day for you and not just sad day...

Every Xiaomi phone receives atleast one major update.. Expect android 7 within 6 months..!
I wonder if the device will actually die after a year or two, 6.0.1 is a very stable version of android but it will eventually have an end, what do you guys think? should I be optimistic about this device? thanks

There is a team working to build oreo, and they already made it bootable, fixed wifi and more, but they are working like hackers, I mean they dont show up on XDA usually, nor they publish their test builds
Whats my point is: Yes, its possible to get Oreo on this device, have patience

Most people who enjoy custom ROMs go with phones like the Pixel or OnePlus, which are developer friendly.

As we don`t need root to disable bloatware/apps or to theme there is less need for custom roms, at least for me.
