I recently purchased this beast of a budget phone, and I am pleasantly surprised! Seeing as how this is a rather capable budget phone (and a ZTE to boot), I am hoping someone can help find a root method!
I know ZTE phones (at least older ones) have a special boot mode, known as disemmcwp, which boots the device into a less secure mode which allows system writing through certain root programs.
I also noticed that this device supports adb side loading from recovery, which is usually locked down, and if I'm not mistaken, this can also be used to exploit system writing if used properly.
Thank you if you can help! This phone is wonderful, but its specs are sorely let down by its usage of Marshmallow instead of Nougat.
The z986dl is now on Nougat. I still would like to get into bootloader myself. I know how to get to recovery mode but that's it.

I find that hard to believe, as the ZTE Max Blue (aka Z986DL) is sold only at Wal-Mart stores under the Straight Talk name - which means that, unless you're mistaken, I should be getting said update as well. A software update query along with a quick google search shows no signs of this model ever receiving an actual nougat update.
Really, no one's rooted this yet? Come on people I miss lucky patcher!

Help root!
Yes PLEASE some one root this.. i need to save apps on my SD card and cant until root, i am running out of space and cant make the sd card internal backup.. 16GB device and 32GB SD card. i am at 15 GB on device! cant get updates due to no space.. have to delete things.. This sucks
You can always format an SD card to an internal drive, then you should be able to move stuff to the SD card.
I've the same phone also on marshmallow, I just recently decided that I need more storage for it. I went on the hunt to find ways to moves apps to the sd card for android phones in general, I did as the tutorials said but got to the parts that said to tap move to sd card and didn't see that button on my phone, so I went on to see how to format the sd card as internal storage. The tutorials assumed that after you tap format that it would pull up a screen that says something like format as internal storage, but mine says format as external storage. Seeing as that is the case I went on to see how to root it and came to this thread to see that there is no method of rooting yet.
I saw that soozin81 said to format the sd card as internal...well like I said, "The tutorials assumed that after you tap format that it would pull up a screen that says something like format as internal storage, but mine says format as external storage."

I don't have an SD card in my phone, but when I go to an app like Aldiko(book reader) and try to access a file, I'm able to explore higher level directories than normal. When I first browse for a file I'm in the area that my phone calls internal storage, but if I go one level higher I see that its actually mounted under the name SD card... What's going on? Why does this app see it as an SD card and why is it mounted as an SD card?
just like the samsung galaxy s phones, the 16gb internal storage is considered 'sdcard' to the system. your external sd is called sd-ext i believe
Wait, so if a tutorial says something will be written to your SD card, should you assume internal storage if you don't have one and external if you do have one? I was looking at the tutorial here: [it won't let me post the link because I'm a new user... google this and its the first result: "how to fully backup and restore your android"]
and it said "This image will be written to your SD card which you are then free to copy around and back up on your computer."
well. this phone isnt like a lot of other android phones. like the galaxy S line, there is more onboard storage than what prior phones had. a lot of the older phones came with 512mb/1gb/2gb/4gb of onboard storage that the OS resided on, and you had to add an sdcard to give yourself enough storage for music/pictures/backups/etc
i suspect you will see a lot more of this same thing in the future as flash memory gets cheaper and cheaper, and manufacturers begin putting more and more storage on board.
as for your link, you do realize that the atrix isnt like ANY of those other phones listed as examples?
nandroids dont work quite the same with the atrix

I did not realize that. I'm an expert with apple but a n00b with android. So you're saying I shouldn't use that guide? Any other suggestions to backup then?

you cannot flash CWM recovery on the atrix like you can a lot of other devices (for which that article was written for)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1019143
I'm having some trouble with that. I'm going to continue with this question in this thread even though the topics changed, let me know if you want me to make a new thread.
The first thing I did after installing the CWM recovery for the atrix app was click the install recovery button. It said install successful. I assume this made a backup image of my phone's ROM. Then I clicked recovery mode and I tried booting holding the down key and selecting fastboot. I also tried some other options like RSD... I think I'm missing something though because the screen just got stuck on the "starting fastboot" line and I had to remove the battery each time it gets stuck to reboot it.
Hi,
another forum recommended I register and ask my question here. I am not a techie. I don't know what I'm doing. This is probably a basic question, but with all the googling I've done, I can't find the answer!
Here goes, and please be easy on me:laugh:
My GS3 was running really slow, running down the battery, just in general not running as well as I remembered from a year before buying it. I decided to back it up, reset it and start from scratch. The phone has run AWESOME! One problem though; when it updated, it installed 4.3. Ever since, I can't do anything with my SD card. I get an error that the SD card is full, and if I look in the settings, it shows zero space on the SD card. If I plug it into my mac, it shows like 12gb of space.
I used to use Android File Transfer and that doesn't work anymore. I recently tried Airdroid, which works great for the internal storage, but tells me that my SD card is full.
Help!
PS I tried to post a link to a screenshot of what storage on my phone looks like, but since I'm a noob, I'm not allowed
When you upgrade to android 4.3 it will change your storage partition from sdcard0 to emulated/0 ... simply it will change its partition so all your old files will not be visible there but they are still in your memory... I suggest you find your old files and move them to new directory... There are many threads on how to find your old files.. Search

Download the sd formatting tool and use it on your pc to format your extremal sd card.
If you meant your internal storage the go read the sticky thread in general, about the changes 4.3 makes.

Will this process effect ability to receive otas etc?
Not sure but it doesnt touch any of the software. It just expand the sdcard to the internal storage
Important comment by VoxLuna:
"This is a great find, except people need to be aware of the downsides to SD cards, at least*as a place for apps to reside.
If I'm understanding your writeup correctly,*this will probably*install all future apps to SD by default**And as you state, it*will always be slower than the internal memory -- on my G4, it's*something like 20MB/s on SD vs 50MB/s*on internal, so a LOT slower.**It's also going to stress your card*if you have a lot of caching or other intense activity going on (load balancing or not). *I have a rigorous backup system, but I don't need to tempt fate....
That being said, I DO want to have internal and external memory appear as a single*drive, while keeping apps in*/data/data instead of going*to any /storage. This*way, you can always find stuff, no matter where an app decides to store its files (camera apps, for example), as well as only having one filesystem you need to back up."

I think I read somewhere of partitioning the micro SD card and being able to have one partition as internal adoptable storage, and keep the other partition as normal SD card. So in theory if you did this on a 200gb card you'd have 100gb internal and 100gb external storage.

Had the exact same thing happen with my 64 gig card.
Adoptable storage has its pros and cons.
SD cards are incredibly slower than the UFS 2.0 speeds that Samsung uses internally.
Having both mix would actually hinder the performance rather than help.
I usually just move the apps that can be moved to the external SD card. Any app with widgets can't be used as widgets if they're on the ext SD card. However, using Android 6.0, it's a little more time consuming moving apps to the SD card. I prefer the way it was setup originally, go to settings, applications, scroll over to SD card and just click the button. If an app couldn't be moved, it wouldn't be listed.
I've only had my phone for a couple of days, and I haven't even had enough time to go through all the additional features. I have tested the waterproofing by filming a video while going down a waterslide. However, when filming a video, it shuts down the second it's under water. You can feel the phone vibrate for a second as soon as it touches the water. Somehow, the phone can detect when it comes in contact with water, which sucks because I wanted to try filming under water.

i cant get this to work i've done exactly as it says get to the partition line in the steps and it goes to the $ pronpt but my sd is still portable storage instead of private, i did the new 599mb update tho . do ya think that may have affected it?
I tried this method, and nothing happens... when I type "sm partition disk:179,0 private", I immediately get a new line to start typing. It just doesn't work... When I check my phone it still shows up as a regular external sd card with no changes...
The same thing happens to me. The command line pops up again like it didn't take. Though it worked on my old s7. What can I do to correct it?
Go to settings about and check are you on PG1 firmware. if you are use odin to downgrade to the firmware version below PG1. After you downgrade then the commands to enable adoptable storage. After its enabled then start the update to update to PG1. This will allow you to have the adoptable storage on PG1 and future updates just dont wipe data or you'll have to downgrade enable adoptable storage then update again.. @Peanuttree @HOrobOD

Does the downgrade wipe the phone or is the user data retained?
I have a 16gb Samsung Galaxy s5, that is rooted and its external SD card used to work just fine its internal storage also displayed just fine on pc. However when I booted up link2sd on teh phone and tried to link or bind stuff (i was restored my files and data from an old 4.4.2 lg volt phone to my galaxy s5 6.0.1 phone) and all my apps and data restored just fine via titanium backup. apparently though link2sd rusn differently on an s5 using mashmallow than it dos on a lg volt using kitkat as when I booted it up and rie dto rebind/relink all my apps back to sd on the s5.
It got a message saying something like (i dont remember the error well) "this device doesnt support sdext and needs sdefs, would you like to change it. This can be changed back at any time in the slider" So I figured. Ok even if it dosnt work I can change it back with the slider so I hit yes to change. Yet nothings binded or linked and when I tried to go back and relink all apps manually its saying sd card not found or mounted. Im thinking umm this card was JUST used to restore a titanium backup so why isnt i found?
So I plug the phone into my pc and sure enough not only do I not see an external storage I also notice I cant access the phones internal storage (well i can but its nothing it it) and the pc shows it as 127 mb free of 128 mb... im thinking 128mb? Umm it should say 16gb. So i chdck the storage on the phone itself and it says sd card is unmounted (titanium backup says the same thing when before link2sd titanium accessed my sd card just fine). But the internal storage on the phone reads as 9.82 Gb used of 14-16gb (close to it) which is correct so Im like why doesnt the pc read it as such? I used to just fine before I did what I did on link2sd.
Lastly i took the sd card out of the phone and put in a different sd card and it shows it as unmounted too. so got the first sd card that I previously took out of the phone plugged it into my pc and my pc reads it just fine along with all my backups and what not so i know the sd card isnt damaged. Sooo how do i change whatever i changed on link2sd to get my phone to recognize my sd card correctly again and get my pc to recognize the external storage when its plugged into the phone and recognize the internal storage of the phone as the right size again?
update.
Ok Im having a HUGE problem. My phone worked fine at first, then I rooted it and used titanium backup to restore all my apps from my old phone (an lg volt) to my current phone an S5... everything was fine. My phone recognized my SD card, when I plugged the phone into my PC it would show my correct phone internal storage as well as my sd card storage. Then I ran link2sd to relink all my data to my sd card... even though i didnt need to because unlike my old phone which was 8gb the s5 was 16gb and had more than enough space to run my apps without the link2sd. If I had left that alone we wouldnt be where we are now. However I didnt so here we are.
Link2sd had message saying something like "this device doesnt support /sdext and has to be changed to sdefs (i know im getting the message way wrong but it was something like that) these settings can be changed via slider". So I clicked yes to let it do what it had to do. after all if I didnt like the results I could always change back via the slider right? link2sd required a reboot after the changes were made and now when it boots after the samsung and sprint logos and before the lock screen Im staring at a black screen that shows the time and "no connection" for about 30 secs before the lock screen shows up (this didnt happen before link2sd made whatever changes it made) and the "process system not responding" message shows up. Though the only adverse affects Ive sen from that so far is when I open Gallery it stops and closes automatically so I cant even use it.
However I couldnt find said slider and now when I hooked my phone to PC it shows no external storage and reads my internal as 127MB free of 128mb (yes that right... 128 mb.. on a phone thats supposed to be 16gb). When i go to storage on the phone itself It said sdcard unmounted (as if theres not one there) and my internal storage shows 9gb used of 14gb so the PHONE knows how much gb I should have but my pc doesnt. Also if i take the sdcard out of the phone and plug it into my pc directly everything shows up on it just as it should so i know the sd card isnt broken.
So I found solutions like reboot phone in recovery and have it wipe cache. I did that.... didnt work. Then I tried unrooting the phone and factory data reset (from the phone settings not from the recovery boot). Despite doing a factory rest which SHOULD fix ANYTHING wrong with the phone, delete all apps and make it run just as it did when you got it. That black screen between logos on lock screen still pops up and I get the "process system not responding" message still appears. Now my PC doesnt see my phone at all when Its plugged in.
So I tried booting in safe mode to see if that message still comes up and the answer is yes but now my pc sees my phone (no sd card in it but I doubt it will see it if it was) however it still displays the storage as 127mb of 128mb
So link2sd started this whole problem and factory reset wont even solve it. Ive provided plenty of details. Can this be fixed or if my phone pretty much done now (i can still use it for texts and calls but, its useless hooked to a pc, doesnt recognize external storage anymore and I cant use the gallery sooooo yea. I hope someone has a solution.
You can't partition 64GB up sdcards.
Use Sandisk Sdcards
Never use Kingstom
Your phone supports ext2 if you install ext tool on.
I HATE SAMSUNG and all that is ext4 devices.
Try find yaffs2 devices.

and again the sd card is the least of my worries how about the problems I listed like my 16gb phone showing up as 128mb on my pc,. not being able to look at the internal storage files/folders on my pc, the "system process not responding" message that come up, even in safe mode and still hasnt went away after a factory reset as such none of my apps (like google maps, internet or even gallery are working, only thing I can do with this phone now is call and text. How about you try focusing on THOSE issues please. Thank you.
Well in case anyone was wondering I solved the problem, reflashing the stock rom then rerooting fixed everything.. I just know not to use link2sd on this phone again
Having the same problem here... how to fix?
I fixed it
Link2sd creates a backup during the process
Just delete the
System/sdcard.bin or (system/sdcard)
And rename the backup named
sdcard.original.pre-link2sd
To
Sdcard.bin
Reboot phone and #Enjoy
This took me 3 days 2 figure out??

UPDATE!!
Got it! My backup files were in /system/bin
but there were two files (sdcard and sdcard.bin). I deleted the sdcard.bin and renamed the sdcard.original.pre-link2d to sdcard.bin.
