It depends on the device. I'm guessing your device is a Samsung device since you mentioned ODIN. What device (model) are you using?

You could still follow section D, but you will need to flash the stock 2.1 rom first available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913 .

[Q] [Using a JIG][Getting ready for warranty]

Ive bought a JIG and would just like some noob-friendly layman advice and references on using the JIG and steps i need to take to prep for a warranty return (I tried searching but im not good at processing large amounts of information so ended up no where). Linking will be fine if you cant be bothered.
I also have other questions such as, when they return the device do i lose ROOT and such? Will they flash an unrootable/unexploitable ROM?
Thanks so much.

Turn the phone off place usb recovery jig in usb port . Screen should now show custom rom zero .
and steps i need to take to prep for a warranty return (I tried searching but im not good at processing large amounts of information so ended up no where). Linking will be fine if you cant be bothered.
What preps ???
Requirments are no root and no custom rom and rom counter at zero .
= flash your original rom or stock rom to remove root .
I also have other questions such as, when they return the device do i lose ROOT and such? Will they flash an unrootable/unexploitable ROM?
If you have root on returning your warranty is void .
They will flash a standard stock rom .

with available sources you cant...
I reacently went to the showroom where I purchased the phone, I just picked a display peice and checked the firmware version, it was still my stock version, but in my region (in middle east it may work since all middle east firmware are same) this way you could guess and flash the same...
If you dont know what you bought then just guess at location etc .

the I717 is obviously the phone, but your UCLF5 or UCLA1 is your baseband or modem. many different modems will work with many different ROM's. some will work better than others. but you may want to use a modem that goes with your carrier.
the modems can flash just like you ROM.
whatever carrier you use, you didn't say, you can find all info in the "Super Everything Thread" for any questions. there is a link to everything there, even the color of shorts your wearing.
^^^Those are stock firmwares... modems and firmware match before anything's been done to the device.
Op:
The phone is an I717 it will run any firmware for...... the I717.

does that mean I was wrong in my post???
always learning and don't want to give bad advice
Not wrong...it just didn't answer the question.
I figure if I cant fully answer question, maybe I can steer them in right direction. if I cant do that, than maybe I can ask question which others such as yourself would chime in with a much more educated and solid solution.
I have followed your wisdom since the Infuse and glad to see you around here too.
The real question should have been why would you want to install an outdated ics leak when JellyBean is available and if you had to install ICS, there is I717UCLF6. But to fully answer the OP, YES.
To answer all of you guys' questions:
This phone is an AT&T phone that will be used abroad and not in the U.S. The reason I want to downgrade is because I'm looking for a Traditional Chinese ROM, and the custom ROM i found is the UCLF5.
I have one more question:
Do I have to get my current baseband to UCLF5 before I can flash that custom ROM? Or can I just flash it without changing my baseband?
Thanks
Rom only should do it

You're in the wrong place. The ROMs, Kernels, Recoveries, and Other topic is for developers to post their work. I also suggest you look in a group for your device, not the Essential Phone.
My problem is, I can't find my Phone Model...
