I'm not sure if it is possible but I have an idea of a widget:
It's a widget that contains another widget that will auto after a specific condition (perhaps with llama/tasker?)
Examples:
hide music widget of choice if there's no music playing or headset plugged in.
Hide (school) timetable if you're not at that location.
Show GPS/traffic widget if not at home/school/work.
You might think of another great use yourself.
This is just an idea, and since I'm no app developer myself, (at least not yet) I hope one of the great android developers that are on these fora will take an interest in this project.

But why hide the widget? That space where the widget that hid the other widget is still unusable because the widget can become transparent, but it can not remove itself from the home screen and then put itself back, since adding widgets is a system level command. And if it could do what I just said it can't, what if you put apps/shortcuts/widgets in its place, where would they go? I might be over thinking this whole idea a little but that's just my two cents. I do have a similar idea now that I read this, though. Use Tasker to restore backed up Nova/Holo/Adw/Apex/Etc, settings and home screen layouts based on what you said in your first post. That is probably going to take way longer to do, but it get the same effect and could probably save battery that way too. I mean, if I make a Tasker profile set up so that whenever I connect to my schools wifi, that it restores a previous backed home screen and settings layout. My phone always dies at school, so my home screen would become blank, with no dock or status bar, and just have gestures set up so that I can still get to my apps (swipe up for drawer, down for notifications, two fingers up for phone app, and two fingers down for messaging). With nothing on my home screen, I save battery because the Launcher does not have to load any thing. Android itself might be a limitation for what we're saying here, but maybe Key Lime Pie could bring us closer to that.

Thank you for the reply, PenguinxEnjoi
I can see now that my idea can be a bit confusing.
I just had the idea to hide the widget when I don't need it so it doesn't clog up my lock/home screen.
If it means turning it invisible I'd like that just as much as removing it. I just don't want to see it.

If this is possible it would totally be an option. Especially since I'm using widgetlocker and nova launcher.
This will probably be done using intents (if it's supported) but I've only begun using tasker (after llama) so I'm still not sure how they work.
Have you found the way to auto hide widgets for example with Tasker?
extension!?
I have been trying to find a way to recreate a menu pop down resembling the app drawer menu on my desktop and yes...there are many hurdles to be made through an auto hide feature. Why there cant be an app writin that works along with zooper pro or uccw (or done internaly themselves) that can acknowlege a widget name and link it to a static bitmap/icon within another widget as in a"press on" action is beyond me. I know that is probably the last thing those two companies wanna do but it would really make it fun for the average joe just trying to create something fresh and different for their own pride and joy. I havent had much luck getting any reaponse on this. Lol obviously due to a lack reason. And no im not talking about the chocolate covered carmel candy. Bit if any of you developers out there want to take a stab at it. Looks like there is a code writtin in a somewhat similar context that i believe could work. In the end. Its us vs. Them. Hope to see something more happen with this.
And of course..i am mot allowed to copy and paste outside links yet. Thanks XDA. but if you type in."auto hide widget" in google it should be the second link you see. Hope someone makes this a reality. Will be watching for developments.:silly:
Pop up widgets from the developer of the sslauncher. Does the trick nicely. Also you can use swipepad with the widgetpad addon. Works nice for me. Widget here, widget gone

you could use overlays (paid version) which integrates in tasker (free version does not)
I just got the phone today and so far that's the thing I hate most about it. Text on certain web pages looks awful unless you zoom in because it's so sharpened.
Also, I couldn't stand the default launcher so I installed Google Now Launcher. Double-tap to turn off the screen no longer works with the Google Launcher. Any way to rectify that?

I'm not sure about that launcher but if you're rooted and have xposed + G3Tweakbox module you can enable Knock Off on the Nav Bar.
There's also an app called Screen off you can use with Nova gestures or you can use Greenify to have it set up so you Knock off the screen and it Hibernates your apps plus locks it.
Both those options require you to have Nova though. Just an idea. I'd imagine there is a way to do it with your launcher possibly with the xposed module that's been made for it. Maybe if your not rooted look into doing so using Stump Root ( very easy ) and then check out xposed.

Thanks. I'm not rooted and won't be for a bit. I have two weeks to test the phone out before I can return it to Verizon for a refund if I decide I don't like it. It's hit and miss so far.
Does Greenify require root for it to work with knock off?
I guess I'll have to look into to some other launchers that support the knock off feature. It's annoying pressing that back power button when you have your phone laying on a desk.
I really don't want a bloated launcher though. That's one of the things I love about the Google Now Launcher. It's nice and simple. The only improvements I would like to see be made to it is the ability to have 5 rows of icons instead of 4 and the option to hide apps in the app drawer.
Just a note: I discovered with the help of a user on another site that you can still use knock-off to turn the screen off if you double tap the very top of the screen on the notifications bar regardless of the launcher you are using.
One problem solved.
Now to figure out the terrible sharpening issue that occurs on some web pages.
I f*&#ing hate this stock rom! If anyone could tell me how, or if there is a way by disabling a service, to stop the google search popping up when you swipe past the home button or hold it for a second. Aargh!
Install Google Now Launcher or Nova.
Sent from my D5803 using Tapatalk
I have the pro version of nova installed. This has no options to disable this feature
Install Tasker for example. Then if You swipe the home button the popup will show with apps to choose - then choose Tasker (use always) that could do just nothing.
Now if You swipe home button only white circle would appear - that would do nothing.
I should have pointed out that my intention is to stop this circle popping up, so i can use the slimpie controls and disable the navbar completely. I am afraid I am struggling to come to terms with just how limited a stock rom is. Sure I can get root via the sony dev website but at this point I think all the fancy algorithms for camera performance would be removed, as well as throttling for thermal control.
When you Google Search, you find https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=hk.sld.SwipeLaunchDisabler
The Irony
I'm using this app to fast lock the screen when I swipe up the home button
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
otherwise you can use this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dynamicg.homebuttonlauncher
to have more options respect to open google search
Just FYI:
- This is called "Swype up for Google Now" in old Nexus manuals.
- Now in Android 6.0 is replaced for "Google Now on tap".
I don't really know how to disable it.... Maybe trying another Launcher.
Thanks for your input. however the home button launcher will not achieve my goal, and the swipelauncher disabler is comically pointless! It is less a disable function, more so it just doesn't launch my browser, choosing instead to flash the screen at me! It is clear that I will not be sated until custom roms come about with some CM or AOSP goodness. Please hurry devs, I want to love this phone...
I'm a bit late to the party and I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but I've just been disabling some apps on my z5c and one of them was the Google Now app (I think it was called). Because the bubble popping up was from the Google now app, it has stopped appearing ever since. Hope to have helped.
Disable the Google App
Yep remove Google Now or I just tried this and works well (you cannot prevent the animation that will still persists, but the action gets revoked the way you have requested.)

Hello,
I have been using the LG V30 for 2 weeks and I am pretty happy with it. The only thing that bothers me are the Icons of already installed apps (like WhatsApp) and GApps. Even if i choose the original shape, these ones stay the same rounded square Icons. I guess that is nothing new and expected behaviour.
This is why I have googled around for the last two hours in order to find answers on how to change these icons.
The only answers I have found were
a) custom icon pack with other launcher
b) use ThemeX and edit specific icons
c) root
d) use a theme
Unfortunately c) is not an option because i do not want to root. b) is off the table as well because that does not work with V30. And since i really love the double tap feature and i cannot stand the solution of nova launcher and other launchers, a) does not fit my needs either.
So I guess the only option for me would be d), wouldn't it? However, all the themes I tried either do not change icons or they change them too much (like all the 'top' themes in LG Smartworld).
This leads to this post and my question: Is there something I did not try yet? If not, is there a theme in Google Play that only changes specific icons (LG Apps, GApps) and no too much else?
Sorry if this is kind of a 'repost' or if this specific question has already been answered. I know this topic was discussed wildely in the Internet and here but i could not find a thread that was as specific as mine.
Thank you very much and best regards,
Brothize

Please clarify why you don't want Nova launcher, as it seems to meet exactly what you want? Nova launcher retains double tap unless you are talking about something else. Mentioned in almost every Nova article: https://beebom.com/cool-nova-launcher-tricks/
I do not use the double tap feature, but when I've tried it with Nova, it's there. For me, the back fingerprint sensor button is much easier to tap for on/off than trying to hold the phone and do a double tap on some open space on the screen (I have lot of icons).
Yes, I have rooted stock firmware and am running Nova launcher with custom pack icons. But my wife and mother and several friends just have Nova launcher with custom pack icons and are NOT rooted.

Thank you for your answer.
I use the the double tap mainly for locking (feels nicer than pressing the button on the back) and sometimes for unlocking in order to check notifications (when phone is on a table, especially at work).
Concerning Nova launcher: I use the floating bar and the screen does not really turn off as in yes, it turns dark, but the floating bar is still visible. Not even after waiting 30-180 seconds. I even tried to play with the settings. Unfortunately the floating bar was still showing. Sorry, I should have clarified why it was not working for me properly!
Are you using the floating bar and it works? Which would mean something is off with my settings I guess.

I believe Novas workaround for non rooted devices is to turn the screen black until your display times out. You may have your timeout set high. The other workaround is to use device administrator but that makes you have to enter your pin/password when you turn your phone on again. I also don't like either method so before I was rooted, I just relied on the double tap on status bar to turn the screen off
Nova launcher prime have gestures and you can made double tap to lock the screen.

I forgot and that method. Yeah, that locks instantly even with Nova.
I'm sure some of you have experienced the Recent Apps button (3 button navigation) not working with 3rd party launchers (Nova, Microsoft, etc). The only fix I have been able to find is to switch the default launcher to the Pixel Launcher, and then back to your 3rd party launcher of choice.
Luckily, I have been able to replicate this problem consistently. While using a 3rd party launcher (Nova launcher in my case), open any app (and only one) and press the Recent Apps button 3 times quickly. The Recent Apps button should stop working. It does not break when there are no recent apps or when there are 2 or more.
Hopefully, this information might be helpful to minds smarter than my own.
If anyone else is experiencing this or is able to replicate the issue as well, I'd like to hear what your setup and experience with the issue is.
Your browser is not able to display this video.
I've been using Nova on my P6 since I got it, until 2-3 days ago anyway when I decided to try Gesture Navigation instead.
I've never had the issue you're showing, not a single time. What I DID encounter a few times is that instead of the proper Recents overview when tapping on Recents I'd only see a weird view of my homescreen, like when you longpress anywhere on the homescreen, except that it was ONLY the homescreen and no settings/wallpaper or other options. That happened randomly and was hard to reproduce, but I've never seen the issue you're showing in the video
Did you import/restore any apps/settings, esp. for Nova, when you set up the phone? That seems to cause a lot of issues when coming from a non-Pixel device. I hard a weird glitch were the display would briefly light up every 10-20 minutes when the phone was just sitting there untouched, a factory reset and fresh install of all apps fixed it.
Maybe try that too?

This is a fresh install of Nova. I Imported all my apps from my Galaxy S10+, so I'll try that and report back with results.
Other than that, what do you think of the gesture navigation? I pretty much wrote it off as soon as I got the phone.

I've never been a fan of it, never used it before and still don't like it. The only reason I'm trying it again is because I'm still not rooted and simply can't stand looking at that ugly white navbar (yea yea, I know I'm weird ). It works I guess, but getting to Recents for example is a hit & miss with gestures, navbar is much more reliable for me.
Whatever your issue is I hope you get it sorted

FIX!!!!!!
Settings > System > Developer Options > Animator duration scale
Turn to 'Animation off'
The Window animation scale and Transition animation scale has no effect on this.
After changing this, I have not been able to replicate this issue.
My best guess is that the recent apps button is pressed while the animation is still going, and the phone has the electronic equivalent of a mild stroke.
Can anyone else confirm that this corrects the issue? I haven't seen a solution like this on any of the many threads about this.

Turning animation off prevents the 'recents' button failure, but I wouldn't call it a fix since then animations won't work. Personally I will keep animations set to .5 and try not to press 'recents' too many times. The lack of animations gives the Nova UI a flat and amatuerish look.
This is a Nova bug, probably due to Android 12 incompatability, since it doesn't happen with the Pixel launcher. I guess we can hope that they correct it eventually.
Thanks for identifying the cause, I had this happen multiple times before I read your post and didn't have any idea what was causing it.

I have some shaky hands so I end up pressing the button a few times fairly often.
I think the issue is with Pixel Launcher. I have confirmed that this issue happens in other launchers as well (Microsoft Launcher). I also found that killing the Pixel Launcher fixes it too.

This. I have this problem where the recent apps don't show, and instead I just get a zoomed out version of my homescreen. This happens CONSTANTLY and is the most annoying thing about this phone. It happened to me on the stock launcher as well as on Nova.
Anyone know of a fix for that?

I did tick that, because I couldn't open my recents menu to close apps. I just unticked that option, and still have the same issue happen when I hit the recents button.
It zooms out to a smaller version of my homescreen, and if I swipe up it will close the most recent app, then show the rest of the open apps, if I just swiped to the right to go to another open app, the smaller homescreen slides to the right off my screen but it doesn't show the other running apps. It's almost as if it's having an issue drawing the image of the open apps.

Not sure I'd call it a "fix" but since I switched to Gesture Navigation instead of using the navbar it hasn't happened once. Maybe the P6/A12 does something odd with the Recents button that needs to get fixed through an update, no idea.

I thought that would fix it as well, so I switched to navbar (which I prefer anyway) and it is happening there too . A12 is just so buggy, it's annoying, I hate that companies use the public as their beta testers nowadays
Just noticed it today had it since launch day. Only change was the fingerprint reader update I did yesterday.

Actually it worked very well, I was surprised. I used cable method that google recommended with the usb-c cable that came with the phone.
I have done LG to LG imports and Samsung to Samsung but never tried LG to Pixel.
I still had to do a lot of setup steps like passwords, set the home screen to Nova and handle the widgets. Be sure to go the play store and do an 'update all'. But it was much easier and quicker than doing a clean install. I figured I could always do that later if I suspected something was not working.
There are issues with the phone and Android 12 but so far I don't think any of them have to do with the install (of course I could be wrong).
Great! Thanks for the info.
Chiming in with a stock unrooted Pixel 5 using Nova Launcher. My Recents also becomes randomly unresponsive, and I am able to reproduce it using the method in the first post (press three times rapidly). I also get the weird zoomed out blank menu as others have mentioned fairly regularly.
