I don't have a clue about how to fix my phone...ex boyfriend modified my phone with cyanogenmod a few years ago and said he would always help me, but that's not been the case...I cannot afford to buy a new phone...this phone will no longer let me send/receive texts and calls...everything else seems fine...he had sent me instructions to download lineage but it is beyond my comprehension (in his defense, I guess that was his way of helping)...I don't want to trash this phone when I paid over $700 for it...if anyone can give me some advice on what to do, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you
It would be a nice start to let us know the exact model of your phone. This way it would be easier to find a tutorial that would work for you.

Great, that's what we need to know about your device. Do you know your how you can boot in recovery mode? And what's your "it" background? You feel confident that if you see and read something to be able to follow the steps and do the same thing?

I have zero IT background...I just know that he used this site for questions when he downloaded it...I'm confident I can follow directions as long as it doesn't require any knowledge of what i'm doing... lol
I do know when I long press power button there is several options for reboot/soft recovery
You should start reading something like this
https://www.google.gr/amp/s/www.lin...c/htc-one-m9-lineage-14-1-nougat-7-1-rom/amp/
to get familiar about the steps you are going to follow.
Also you might need to update your TWRP (Custom recovery) which you will use in order to install LineageOS on your phone, but that's something that I'm going to explain you tomorrow and also provide you will more details about the steps which you should follow.
Sorry but I'm away from PC right now and it's not that easy to write down all the steps and explain what you need to do in order to avoid any problems while installing LineageOS, I hope you don't mind waiting another day.
First time it will be kind of "hard" to follow the steps but in the end you will be amazed how easy it is...
That said I will return tomorrow with details about what you should to.

Thank you so much...I don't mind waiting at all...it's been like this for over a month now and this place is my last resort...many thanks to you!!!
I really would like to just take it back to stock...I fear that going to Lineage might open another whole set of issues that I have no clue how to fix...and I really just need a stable functioning phone...without him I feel lost with this all...I truly appreciate your help though...I think I'll just hold off and have hope that it will miraculously start working properly again and everything will be fine...I just have a strong feeling that I'm not to do anything to this phone without him...he had asked me to never have anyone else mess with my phone and so I'm going to continue to honor him in that at all costs...I don't understand any of this modification stuff so I just don't feel comfortable without him...
Thanks again for your help...
First of all sorry for taking me so long to reply.
Assuming that you already have TWRP (Custom Recovery installed) you need to download the latest LineageOS version from here and gapps ARM64 for version 7.1.x I prefer nano and I suggest you also use nano.
After downloading both files copy them into a folder of your phone and you are ready to start.
By pressing the power button you will be prompt with a menu of Power off, Restart, Airplane mode. Choose restart and select Recovery option press OK and wait to reboot into recovery.
From TWRP recovery make sure you see the two files you downloaded, press install and navigate to the folder where you copied the two files, if you see both of the files press home to return to the main screen of TWRP.
Now, in the upper right corner there is a button Wipe press it and then it will appear a screen with a Advanced Wipe button, press it and select to wipe Dalvik / ART Cache, System, Data, Cache. Once you check those in the bottom of the screen there is a slider says Swipe to Wipe. Swipe the slider and wait until it finishes. Then press again the home button to return to the main TWRP screen from there select Install, find the two files and select the lineage.zip file form that screen select the Add more zips and select the gapps.zip file finally Swipe the slider that says Swipe to confirm Flash and give it some time.
While you waiting for wiping and/or installation the phone might be locked when the processes end just unlock it by sliding the slider.
After the installation finished go back to main screen and select the Reboot option, from there select the System give the phone some time to boot from 5-15 minutes once the reboot finished your will end up in the setup screen and you are good to go.
This method works only if you already have TWRP installed and it will install LineageOS -the re-brand of CyanogenMod-.
If for a reason you don't see lineage and/or gapps file in TWRP then just reboot back to normal. Once you have completed the wipe process do not reboot the phone unless you install lineage and gapps files for your convenience.
Edit: In gapps page select the ARM64 -> android 7.1 -> nano

You need to flash CM9, let the phone boot completely, let the phone sit for 10 minutes to build system files, then reboot and flash GAPPS. You can't/shouldn't flash a CM ROM and GAPPS together. Always flash the ROM, reboot, then flash GAPPS.
Also, did you perform a full fastboot wipe prior to flashing?
I don't think it is necessarily required to boot once before flashing Gapps. I have always flashed Gapps right after flashing the ROM (without booting in between) and it also instructs on the CM Wiki page (for the Atrix) to flash Gapps after flashing the ROM:
7. Select Install zip from sdcard.
8. Select Choose zip from sdcard.
9. Select the CyanogenMod update.zip.
Optional: Install the Google Apps by performing steps 7 - 9 again and choosing the Google Apps update.zip.
10. Once the installation has finished, select +++++Go Back+++++ to get back to the main menu, and select the Reboot system now option. The Motorola Atrix 4G should now boot into CyanogenMod.

Also, when using Rom Manager it gives the option to flash Gapps in the same recovery session as well.
Note: Of course, I speaking solely on CM7 and not CM9. And I'm not trying to say your method is wrong either. I have noticed that there are CM-based ROMs that do recommend separate recovery sessions for flashing additional packages so I don't disagree with you.

While I would agree that it is possible to flash any number of files at the same time before rebooting, I would argue at the same time that it is not good practice to do so. I would also argue that because a wiki, or even Cyanogen himself says this is fine, nobody can know for sure if doing this can in fact cause issues. It's something I run into at work all the time. "Just because something is done using a particular method, this does not mean it is the only or best method". Things happen which you cannot foresee such as file versions overwriting other different file versions which could have undesirable results after booting. Some of these results may not be seen on the surface, but could be the root cause of such things as, lets say for example, high battery usage at idle.
So, while I agree with you in part, we shall have to agree to disagree. My usual method for any ROM would be the following:
FULL fastboot wipe
Reboot to recovery
Flash ROM
Reboot and let phone sit for 10 minutes after full boot up
Reboot to recovery
Wipe Dalvik and cache
Flash GAPPS (if ROM requires it)
Reboot and set up accounts
Reboot to recovery
Wipe Dalvik and cache
Flash chosen kernel
Reboot and set CPU clock, voltage, etc.
Done.
Actually, I do agree with you. The only part I didn't agree with was the part where you said "can't" in regards to flashing CM and Gapps together. I probably wouldn't have said anything if you left it at "shouldn't". I agree that, for the most part, there is no single way to do things, which is why I mentioned it was possible and can work.
Please don't take my comment as an attempt to undermine you. You have provided great advice numerous times and is much appreciated. I actually bookmarked a post that you made awhile back detailing "fastboot wipes" that I now use every time I flash a new ROM. (I actually have the instructions mesmerized now but I still have the bookmark)

I didn't take your comments as anything but constructive, so please don't get the wrong impression. I was simply continuing the discussion. When I used the word "can't" I also added the "/shouldn't" because the "can't" was more of a metaphor than a literal statement!
This issue has been posted several areas, and most might not know which thread to look.
To get around the "Activating Mobile Data Service" problem while flashing AOSP roms while on the new format, simply flash the rom alone, then boot into Android without flashing Gapps. This will bypass the Welcome screen. Setup WiFi, if applicable. Then reboot into recovery and flash Gapps, your kernel, and any other mods you desire.

Wow... you say it just too easily... a tutorial or something more specific for people to learn. thanks...
Ok...here are the exact steps.
In Android
1) Download your rom of choice.
2) Download Gapps, if you don't have it.
3) Reboot into recovery
3a) Use an app, such as Quick Reboot from the Play Store for easiest access
In Recovery
4) Perform a FULL WIPE.
4a) In TWRP, hit Wipe-->Advanced Wipe-->choose Dalvik Cache, Cache, Data, & System
4a.1) Swipe the bar on the bottom of the screen to complete the wipe.
4b) If you are coming from another AOSP rom, the Gapps will not be wiped through a simple Factory Reset...
4b.1) ...because the Gapps are installed to the System partition, and a Factory Reset only wipes Dalvik Cache, Cache, & Data
5) Go back to the home screen, and hit Install.
6) Navigate to the location of the rom zip file, and touch it to flash.
7) Swipe to flash it. Reboot to Android.
In Android (1st boot of new rom)
8) This will load up to the homescreen initially. Set up your WiFi network (if applicable).
8a) You will not be able to add any Google accounts because the Gapps package wasn't flashed.
9) Reboot back into recovery.
Back in Recovery
10) Navigate to the location of the Gapps zip file, and touch it to flash.
11) Swipe to flash it.
11a) Flash anything else of your choice, such as kernels and/or mods.
12a) Reboot to Android.
Back in Android
13) Profit.
Bypass welcome

Really? Veeeeery insteresting!
Hi all,
I really tried to learn everything about rooting and flashing and custom ROM, and I am already busy all day, but I still can't get out of all the technological abracadabra, and other existing XDA topics I didn't know if they worked for me too, it would be very awful if I brick it because I didn't understand something small.
I may seem a bit lazy, but could someone please help me in not too technological language and provide me with the correct links to install?
So I have an i9100 second hand. The battery is empty really quick and gets very hot sometimes, and I read that this could be changed by installing custom firmware, like cyanogenmod.
I already have installed Siyah. My current version is Android 4.1.2.
I read things about installing custom recovery or something, but there are no important data on my phone yet, so I assume this is not applicable for me?
Can you install GApps after installing cyanogenmod? Except Google play, Maps and Youtube I don't need/want any other applications I think.
So can anybody provide me with a (customized) step plan what to do to install the best fitting version of cyanogen mod?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi there,
Siyah kernel already comes with custom recovery, however, it is out of date now and will not install kitkat roms. You will need to install a kitkat kernel first before installing the kitkat rom.
Yes, you can install gapps after installing cyanogenmod, have a look in the xda forums for modular gapp packages since you don't want some google bloat ware. However, the latest cyanogenmod 11 has a small system partition and will require you to install small gapp packages such as the 20140105 gapps. Search up gapps package on google and click the cyanogenmod link.
Now to install cyanogenmod (I chose cyanogenmod 11 m9 snapshot):
1. Download cyanogenmod 11 m9 snapshot .zip file (should be at cyanogenmod website)
2. Download modular gapps package, but I strongly recommend to install 20140105 gapps package by cyanogenmod
3. Download kitkat compatible kernel (I recommend downloading Pedestre's apolo kernel)
4. Put them all on your phone
Now reboot into recovery with this button combination, hold: (vol+, power, home)
5. Install .zip --> internal sd card (or sd card 0, or wherever you put the zips in) --> select kernel zip
6. Reboot your phone
7. You will notice your phone will not boot into rom, that's ok since it will automatically boot back into the new recovery
8. In the new recovery: press wipe/clear, and swipe the bar to do the factory reset and wipe caches
9. Install cyanogenmod zip
10. Install gapps zip
11. Reboot your phone
12. If your phone doesn't bootloop or crash, you're all good. Note: first boot will take a while, be patient!

Many many thanks!
Only 2 questions; which pedestre apolo kernel do I have to download? There are a lot of version circulating it seems to me. And it doesn't matter that I already don't have a genuine kernel anymore?
And what do you mean with step 4? To me this step seems that I have to put CM, gapps and a new kernel in once (via reboot/download modus > Odin I guess?), but in later steps you say that I have to do those step by step.

Just follow This simple steps.
You are done
First download all the necessary zips(ROM,gapps, recovery) and copy them on your phone's external SD card and follow the procedure.

The apolo kernel you need to download is v7.1 for kitkat. It doesn't matter that you won't have the genuine kernel as it won't really affect your phone except improving battery life and performance.
What I meant with step 4 is to put the files onto your phone usng your computer (using windows explorer, like how you transfer files to other USB devices) while your phone is still on the operating system. After that (the following steps), you must install them in the particular order that I explained it in using your phones recovery software.
Hope this answers your questions, gsstudios
Hi, thanks for replying, but I am stuck on point 4/5
I finally found some time to work on it, so I downloaded the KitKat compatible kernel, the gapps and de CM 11m9.
They were in my download folder on the computer, and then I just copied those three .zip files to the internal memory.
Then I connected my phone to the computer with a USB cable, and I put the phone into recovery mode. But when I did that, the computer stopped to recognize the phone as an external disk, so I couldn't enter it anymore.
So what did I do wrong? (putting the files on my external SD didn't help either) And how do I install those zips, just unpack them if I solved the problem mentioned above?

Once you put everything on your internal storage you don't need your computer anymore.
In recovery you must tap on "install zip". Navigate to your location where you put everything.
First you install the kitkat kernel.
Afterwards you go back and tap on advanced, there you have to tap "reboot recovery"
You should see another recovery now.
Now you install your custom rom using "install zip", afterwards you install the gapps package.
When you are done with installing everything it's a good idea to wipe data and dalvik cache, in case you didn't do before.
At last you simply tap reboot.
Don't be afraid if booting takes more time than usual, it'll take longer the first time you boot.

How long is long (for after the kitkat kernel reboot)? I have a black screen now for more than 2 hours after I hit 'reboot', and after 5 minutes I tried to put it on again with just hitting the power button for 2 seconds (I didn't read that it could take a while) but nothing changed.
It had 90% battery when I started. Because I was afraid it was running out of battery I plugged it to the power grid. My phone was and is warm, so I assume it was stil working on something.

How long is long (for after the kitkat kernel reboot)? I have a black screen now for more than 2 hours after I hit 'reboot', and after 5 minutes I tried to put it on again with just hitting the power button for 2 seconds (I didn't read that it could take a while) but nothing changed.

Okay sry I should have specified myself when saying it takes a while.
That's Max 5 minutes. So your phone seems to be stuck in Boot loop.
Cause for this is either you didn't wipe everything before flashing - try wiping again and reboot, or you flashed the wrong file for your phone.
I'll make it easy, assuming your phone model is gt-i9100.
Go here :
http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-roms/cm11-android-4-4-3-for-galaxy-s2-gt-i9100sgh-i777/
Download cm11 and micro gapps from this site.
Afterwards download cwm kitkat compatible from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/general/cwm-kit-kat-compatible-t2546597
When you downloaded everything and put it onto internal storage go into recovery.
1. Wipe data and dalvik cache.
2. Install zip: cwm kitkat compatible
3. Reboot recovery in sections "advance"
4. Now you are in a new recovery again.
5. Install zip: cm11
6.install zip : micro gapps
7. Wipe data and dalvik
8. Reboot phone

So I did the kitkat install after wiping all user data and dalvik cache (and accidentally the normal cache too).
I rebooted it via advanced > reboot recovery. It rebooted within 10 seconds.
Then I installed the zips (CM and Gapps. To be honest: I installed the gapps the first replyer to this thread mentioned: 20140105)
And I wiped all user data and dalvik cache.
Should I now do:
1: advanced > reboot recovery
or 2: reboot system now (on the first screen you see when you're in recovery)
And then it should start up until I see the screen with apps, time and those things I think?

If you were successful i highly recommend to make a nandroid backup in recovery.
If you ever have problems booting your phone, you can restore this backup via recovery.
With titanium backup you can backup your apps and their data.

Thanks for the advise, I was successful
First of all, Dear Admins and Mods, Please do not hate me if I have posted in the incorrect section
I have been reading the forum in XDA and following the steps. And I thought of making a fun and easy guide for clean installation of a ROM. Yeah why not. For this guide I'll take a Custom ROM.
Note: I always do a clean install just because I want to feel a new rom / device sensation after installation of the rom.
Fun thing to Remember: They (the world) says you need to fail before you succeed. But F-to_the-U-to_the-C-to_the-K them, you can succeed if you know what you are doing and if you are ok to fail a few times before your ultimate success. So Remember what I mentioned earlier in this paragraph. LOL. Just kidding. Sorry for the long post.
Prerequisites:
* Unlocked bootloader
* TWRP recovery installed (Version on my device 3.0.2-2)
* Nandroid backup of the current system and the same copied to the computer.
* A notebook/paper and a pen/pencil to write down any observations (this is really good if you mess up while trying the method of clean installation)
* Downloaded ROM and Gapps(My favourite is "pico" flavour).
* Phone atleast 50% of power remaining on the battery, USB Cable (for the phone) and a computer.
* Knowing that what you follow next is at your own risk
Before starting if you really like to know what these technical terms mean, do a google search on the terms and find out what they do and do not. I can say that I do not know many of the technical stuff but I google it up and ask people,
So here we go:
1. Make sure that you have fully understood what I have mentioned in the Prerequisites section.
2. Connect the device to the computer using the cable.
3. Restart the device using Recovery mode. (Power Menu > Reboot > Recovery).
4. Skip the informative screen from TWRP by mounting the partitions for R/W (just Swipe).
5. Check the device on the computer and check whether the storage is shown and accessible.
6. Let's start wiping. Hit Wipe > Advanced Wipe on TWRP.
7. Select all partitions and swipe to start wiping. (This will wipe the existing data / everything apart from recovery and bootloader)
8. Once completed go back to the starting screen of the TWRP.
9. Open the device partition on the computer and copy the downloaded ROM and Gapps packages to it.
10. On TWRP, click Install and select the required ROM, click Add more Zips and select Gapps package.
11. You can leave the device connected to computer or disconnect and connect the device to a charger.
12. Swipe again to confirm flash.
13. Once all are completed, reboot to the system.
14. The first reboot usually takes a good few minutes. (From all my custom and device manufacturer ROM installation experiences the longest was 9 minutes and a few seconds).
15. If the device does not boot up after 30 minutes and stuck at boot logo. This must be a cause of boot loop.
16. Once completed, set up the Google account details and once done do not install anything else, just reboot the device again.
17. Now once the device is up and runnnig, chase behind and hit it with some apps of your preference. lol just kidding. Seriously put some apps in
Questions? on the step 15?? Only happened once but never happened afterwards. I didn't do anything. Just repeated the steps from 1st point.
Any more questions: PM me or Google search, but make sure you add all the required details in the PM (such as what exactly happened or did before the error or issue) as I will be not always online due to work (Yeah I'm from a working class ) But I often come online
Have fun Have a great Day

Well it looks really good as a brand new device. And I do like the feeling of that Just a few hours ago flashed the cm13 latest nightly with gapps pico flavour. And not a single issue so far
And it really wipes the partitions for good
Hello folks,
This phone was lying in the drawer for years until I found it yesterday and tried updating Lineage OS. It was on OS 12.
I took a backup in the recovery and tried wiping the phone to install Lineage OS 14.1 (just update wouldn't work for some reason). I could wipe everything but not the internal storage. It kept giving an error, unable to wipe /sdcard. So I wiped every 'partition' individually and it claimed, wiping successful.
When I went back to backup screen to make sure that rest everything is indeed wiping, I saw the sizes of the partitions same as at the time of backup. So I wasn't too sure if it just wasn't getting refreshed or it indeed didn't wipe.
And thats when I got a dumb idea of rebooting the phone.
I thought I have Safestrap installed so it will reboot in recovery anyways, but no, now all I get Motorola flash screen and then black screen.
Any ideas how should I proceed?
Many thanks in advance.
Try
Power off, Hold volume buttons, Power on, release buttons at
Boot Mode Selection Menu> Scroll down with volume down button, to BP Tools, Select with Volume UP button, should boot directly to SafeStrap (if it's still there).

Thanks for a quick reply.
I managed to recover the phone using RSD Lite and the firmware but now struggling to find the rooting files to root and get Lineage on the device. All threads that I am checking have missing files.
It will be great if anyone can share their backup.
Thanks again.
Update:
I managed to install.
I used https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48392009#post48392009 to root
Installed Safestrap and installed lates Lineage build.
4th thread in the sticky had everything.
Thanks again for help.
