Samsung has confirmed Oreo for S6,S7,S8,J (not J3 2017) and A 2017
And J7 2016 can get Oreo because it have Exynos 7870 and J7 2015 has 2 major OS updates

Explain then how the Xperia SP, from 2014, can fluidly run Oreo through custom ROM, or how Galaxy S3 mini, from 2012, can fluidly run 7.1.2
It has little to do with hardware capabilities.
OS runs are generally cyclic. Most premium phones get at least 2 major OS upgrades. Higher end mid-range phones get 1 or 2 major OS upgrades. These are standard. From a OEM point of view, that's fine and when a device comes to the end of it's service, it will be dumped simply from a negative fiscal. By no means are these devices dead and buried because of hardware capability

Yes, you are correct I take back my words Condor never died.
But nougat was almost stable and non other than @anderson mendes maintained most of the nougat ROMs but the performance degraded due to weak hardware.

Even the a5ux is fast with kraken kernel and some tweaks in Kernel aduitor app

LineageOS is made by volunteer maintainers & developers & nobody including them can predict how long it will take to fix bugs & technical difficulties of making a modern Oreo firmware for a 2012 S3 phone made to support Samsung's Android 4.0.4 and with the last Samsung officially supported 4.3.
